Steins;Gate's Brilliant Time Travel Theory and Plot Explained

- Steins;Gate is without a doubt a masterpiece. I have a huge admiration for how well the Steins;Gate time travel story fits together. Time travel seems to be a pretty hard genre to be innovative on these days, and Steins;Gate's original take on it is a breath of fresh air! To combine the "anything goes" nonsense from parrellel world theory with the depressing "everything is inevitable" of the self-sustaining time line theory by introducing the concept of attractor fields and time leaping is a stroke of pure genius! And on top of that, the story is incredibly emotionally gripping as well. To truly appreciate the genius of Steins;Gate's time travel plot though, I wanted to explain how it all fits together so perfectly.
As a side note, we will barely touch on Steins;Gate 0, since that addition is a bit less elegant and somewhat convoluted compared to the original Steins;Gate, and needs a video of its own. (Do let me know if you'd want me to make that video by the way!)

This video is the best explination of the timelines in the show but I still am a bit confused.
If at the end of the series, Okabe 1 sees the 'dead' body there, wouldn't he go and send a text to the past? That would cause the beta worldline to once again shift to the alpha world line. Okabe 1 doesn't move himself, he moves the entire line, which would include okabe 2, and thus repeating the same cycles over again. Is that correct or no?
What you say is absolutely correct! This is a good/necessary occurence, otherwise Okabe 0 would never have existed to tell his younger self how to save Kurisu and give him a time machine to do so. So the same cycle needs to happen (stay intact), otherwise the entire show would change and Okabe 0 who has come to deeply care about Kurisu would never exist. Of course, you don't WANT Okabe 0 to come to exist, because his existence is caused by Kurisu's death, which is what we are trying to avoid. But you need to only avoid Okabe 0's existence at the same time as saving Kurisu, so in other words BY saving her. Otherwise, the wordline will change before Okabe 2 has a chance to use the time machine Okabe 0 made. This is why keeping the timeloop intact is so important.
The important change is that, if the Kurisu that Okabe 1 sees isn't actually dead, then in the "original" worldine to which Okabe eventually returns by cancelling all the D-mails, Kurisu won't be dead either. This way, Okabe 0 will stop existing/will never exist, because the future of Okabe 0 connects to a wordline in which Kurisu had actually died, which doesn't exist anymore. But this is okay, since at this point Kurisu will be safe and there's no need for Okabe 0 anymore. The trick is to make sure Okabe 0's future is only blocked off after Kurisu's life had been insured, and not before.
@@jasperjansen8477 I appreciate your response! The problem is I still don't think it answers my question, so let me try reframing it a little better.
SO, Okabe 1 must witness a 'dead' Kurisu in order to begin his journey to either end up as Okabe 0 or Okabe 2. I'm following that. BUT when we get to the point of Okabe 2 showing up and saving Kurisu Okabe 2 must now take the time machine. Now from here, does Okabe 2 active the time machine BEFORE or AFTER Okabe 1 sends the text message that gets sent back in time? If it is AFTER Okabe 1 sends the text, wouldn't Okabe 2 also be transfered to an Alpha Worldline? If he travels it BEFORE Okabe 1 Sends the text, then wouldn't he still go to the Alpha Wordline, since the worldline that he is on is about to become an Alpha Wordline?
I think this boils down to, I don't know how the time machine fits into the other forms of time travel (microwave and leaping). Because where exactly is Okabe 2 going too after he completes his mission and making kurisu look dead. Does he go a day into the future?
What does it look like from outside perspective on the 'steins gate' worldline. If I was an invisible observer at the conference, what would I see happen? Kurisu gets tazed, Okabe 2 gets in a time machine and Okabe 1 would leave, go outside and what would I see? If we are thinking that worldlines stretch backwards as well as forward, the 'steins gate' worldline must have a beginning and a logical flow of progression right? So if there were an Okabe living his life in the 'steins gate' worldline, what was he doing on the day kurisu 'died' ?
Okabe 2 cannot exist unless Okabe 1 exists. Okabe 1 MUST go on a journey to become Okabe 2. BUT when Okabe 1 sends that first text, he himself doesn't move through time, time changes around him. The worldline shifts, not Okabe 1.
Please let me know if this makes sense or no.
@@JekylHyde Ah, my bad! I think/hope I understand better what you mean now! I agree that the past changes along with the present and future when a worldline shifts. I also agree that the worldline essentially changes AROUND Okabe, instead of him traveling TO another one (although this boils down to just a matter of perspective~, so below I will be calling it "traveling to/from" just for clarity).
As far as the effect of the time machine on the worldline is concerned, I relate it to the effect of the D-mails (messages). Once a D-mail changes the worldline, it disappears from the new worldline, since there was never any reason for it to be sent in the first place. The time machine also disappears because, since the Steins;Gate worldline has been reached, there was no need for it to be created in the first place.
Chronologically speaking, from Okabe 2's perspective, I think of it like this: Okabe 2, after failing to save Kurisu, travels once again FROM a point after the original D-mail had been sent TO a point in the past right before Okabe 1 would send the original D-mail. Once Okabe 2 saves Kurisu, he leaves again in the time machine, FROM a point in time right before Okabe 1 would send the original D-mail, removing himself from this point in time, allowing the worldline to change to the Steins;Gate worldline. Okabe 2 probably travels TO a point in time after the original D-mail had been sent by Okabe 1, though when exactly is unknown (and may even be irrelevant). At this point, the worldline changes around Okabe 2, and the time machine disappears, much like a D-mail, since there was no reason for it to be created by Okabe 0 anymore. From Okabe 2's perspective, it fades to white in the story.
From Okabe 1's perspective, he still sends his D-mail that changes the wordline to an alpha worldline. However, due to Okabe 2's saving of Kurisu, Okabe 1 now does not shift FROM a beta worldline (where Kurisu is dead) to an alpha wordline, but FROM the Steins;Gate wordline (where Kurisu is alive) to an alpha worldline. So, it appears as if we have lost the Steins;Gate wordline now! This may be the source of your confusion/concern, is that correct? However, since the timeloop is still intact and stays the same, Okabe 1 will eventually undo all his D-mails and return TO the wordline he left by sending the first D-mail. However, due to Okabe 2's changes, the wordline Okabe 1 will return to is the Steins;Gate wordline, not the original beta worldline. This because Okabe 2 shifted the wordline from beta to steins;gate right BEFORE Okabe 1 sends his first D-mail. When Okabe 1 arrives as a new-Okabe-2 (let's call him Okabe SG) in the Steins;Gate worldline, he will find that, much to his surprise, Kurisu hadn't actually died after all, and that he was mistaken in assuming she did. Soon though, Okabe SG's memories will be overridden by those of Okabe 2, as is the nature of Okabe's reading steiner ability. This is the point at which the story picks off, after the fade-to-white in the time machine.

@@jasperjansen8477 I've had some time to digest what you said. I really appreciate you breaking it down in your previous comment and it has become a lot clearer to me! I really want to agree with a lot of your points but I'd like to make some exceptions. So, I will agree that this all 'seems' to track.
Let me try to break it down. Okabe has the ability of the 'reading stiener' which allows him to perceive changes to time. Where this gets screwey for me is I don't understand the instancing of it exactly. If Okabe 2 gets in the time machine and travels to a few days in the future, would he not just over write Okabe 1 when Okabe 1 sends the text? Or does Okabe 2 cease to exist after he gets in the time machine? Because this one again leads into, where does Okabe 2 go when he gets into the time machine? As far as we know, at the very end of the show, is that actually Okabe 2 or is that Okabe 1?
And to continue onto that thread, wouldn't Okabe 0 eventually overwrite any other Okabe in like 30 years? He doesn't exist anymore in the Beta worldine, but those sorts of things don't seem to effect Okabe's stiener ability.
In the end, I will say that this show appears to make sense, but only because the mechanics of how certain elements work are vague and are open for interpretation. Thanks for taking the time to explain it to me!
@@JekylHyde I think that's a good point! What causes confusion here I think is basically that it is unclear which version of Okabe overwrites the other each time the wordline is changed. Earlier in the series we could more easily say that the "current" or "original" version of Okabe will be the one to always retain his memories; that being the Okabe that also "does the changing" of the worldline. However, this gets muddled in the final instance of the worldine moving which we are now considering. It is difficult to see which Okabe (1, 2 or 0) is the one who ought to retain their memories. Since if you retain the logic that the "furthest" Okabe ought to retain their memories, and liken the effect of the time machine to the effect of a D-mail (which I do), then logically Okabe 2 may take precedence over Okabe 1, but it is Okabe 0 who should take precedence over Okabe 2. But this does not seem to be the case, so this way of looking at it seems to be faulty.
One way of looking at it is to say that indeed the show simply does not give an explanation, and is delibirately "vague" here, which I admit does detract somewhat from the otherwise very ingenius plot. I also have some other way of looking at it though, to make "canonical" sense of it all, if you'd like. I do admit that this is more of an "excuse" than a fact, since this other explanation involves Steins;Gate 0 (a show which follows the story of Okabe 0 more closely), but was created after the original Steins;Gate story was already finished, so it is a bit of a stretch to say that the creators had this explanation in mind when they wrote the original story. Then again, if that is the case and you'd deny the canoninity of Steins;Gate 0, you could also take the stance that Okabe 0 does in fact overwrite Okabe 2 in 30 years.
Anyway, my explanation for why Okabe 0 does not overwrite Okabe 2 is as follows: At the end of Steins;Gate 0, we see Okabe 0 in the future send Suzuha to Okabe 2 in the time machine he created. Earlier in Steins;Gate 0's plot, however, Mayuri had used the time machine in the past and was unable to return, now "lost in time." As a way of "rescuing" this Mayuri, Okabe 0 after sending off Suzuha then enters a different time machine (a prototype) in order to track down the time machine his version of Mayuri was lost in to try and find her. He also does this because, on the beta worldline, his death (or rather "disappearance from the worldline") seems to be part of the beta attractor field. To escape this fate, Okabe 0 effectively "removes himself" from this worldline by leaving it in his prototype time machine to go and save Mayuri. His "leaving of the worldline" to me can be seen as the reason why Okabe 0 does not overwrite Okabe 2 when the latter saves Kurisu using the time machine. Okabe 0's memories are no longer a contender, so to speak. And since Okabe 2 takes precedence over Okabe 1 as a more "current"/"further"/"older" version of himself, who is also actually the one doing the changing of the worldline, Okabe 2's memories take precedence over those of Okabe 1.
And so, it tracks, and you can "logic yourself into it" this way, if you prefer.
Steins;Gate's version of timetravel was _so_ good that it led to the lead writer of the original VN to be hired to write on Square Enix's Bravely Default: Flying Fairy

I don't think any other story will ever reach this level plot and character development for me. While I usually like a story for being good in one of these 2 things. Steins gate is just brilliant on both. This is just so precious.
Sonny boy was a really good one which comes close and it has extra elements of philosophy represented in a symbolical way whilst still having a complex story
I rewatched the Show after 3 years today. Its still an emotional rollercoaster. This Video explains the Story perfect. 👍
a kerr blackhole is not one where the singularity is a ring, its simply a rotating blackhole, one that is also most common in real life. The theoretical part is a naked singularity, a superextremal blackhole.
The terminologies used are also somewhat counterparts of what the actual terminology is used for, an "attractor" in math is the concept where small changes in initial conditions will not cause deviation from the point, aka, the opposite idea of chaos, which is aptly used in the story as a convergence in the form of an event, whereby small changes that okabe makes not make enough of a difference and mayuri will die. The term worldline however means somewhat different things, in physics, a worldline is simply the "perspective" of specific observer, rather than different timelines.

this is what I like about multiple timelines. There is a start and finish to it. While it's all a loop, it's not a paradox.
Yes ! Otherwise that's the main problem with many time travel stories, since they assume there is only one timeline, there is inevitably a paradox when they travel back in time.
Instead, stories with multiple time lines go :
T1) events happen, then travel back in time to modify T2 [not shown]
T2) event happen and are modified because of guys coming from T1. [what we actually see since episode 1]. We then later understand there has already been some time traveling, and they help resolve problems, or we time travel again to modify a T3...
Its not exactly a loop since it has an end, its more of a cycle

1 - What happens to the world line after Okabe moves from it to another line? Does it delete?
The year 2025 is supposed to be the year of Okabe's death in the Beta line of the world. How could he live after his memories have been replaced?
3 - Is Kurisu in the first episode dead because of Okabe or is she unconscious?
4 - Is Okabe who recorded the video the same time he returned thousands of times?
5 - When Suzuha received a letter from her father, he said that you and Mayori had decided to go back in time to convince Okabe you had changed the line of the world, but Okabe did not feel that why? Does this mean that Suzuha who returned with Mayori to persuade Okabe from a different world line compared to Suzuha in the special episode?
6. What was the content of Daru's letter - Suzuha's father -?
7 - Suzuha in the first season in the special episode and after Okabe failed to save Kurisu she did not have Okabe's future message, so how did she have it at the end of the season?
1 There is only one worldline. When Okabe shifts worldlines, it simply alters the world. In this sense, world lines are simply a tool to explain the act of changing the past/future.
2 Daru explains that Okabe didn't really die in a literal sense. However, he was was mentally broken to the point that the Okabe Daru knew was dead. However, he tells everyone except a set few that Okabe is dead, this way he "tricks the world", which makes Okabe realize that the world can be tricked.
3 The Kurisu in the first episode is dead. We know this because Mayuri gets a metal Upa in the first episode. However she gets a green Upa in the worldline Okabe saves Kurisu in
4 (I don't fully understand what you mean, so I'll try answering it the best I can)
In the anime, it's the same Okabe who time leaped back multiple years. In the Visual Novel, it's a different Okabe (The VN takes place on two worldlines). He sends the message from the year 2025, we know this because he goes into the time machine cause he dies that year, and thinks it'd be possible to trick the world again by simply disappearing. (He also likely tries returning later, but it's never stated)
5 It was established in the original that small changes to the worldline doesn't lead to a noticeable shift in worldline.
The Suzuha who goes back with Mayuri is also different from the one who goes back to convince Okabe to change the world (That's a past version of Suzuha)
6 He was telling them the plan for the operation.
7 The reason Suzuha didn't have the letter in the special episode was because it hadn't been sent yet (It's likely that Okabe hadn't gotten the message in the first episode)
The reason she has it at the end is because Okabe had sent it (and we see him record it in the last episode of S;G0)

1 - There are infinite possible worldlines that are all happening at the same time. Okabe moving worldlines basically just means that he’s taking over the role of the Okabe already present in the worldline he’s just arrived in. In the worldline he left behind, it just keeps on running even when he’s not there to see it. I don’t think I fully understand your question about Okabe surviving past 2025 in the beta attractor field, so I’m not sure how to answer
2 - It’s left up to the imagination of the viewer/player. There’s no clear answer, and it’s precisely because of that fact that Okabe’s plan at the end of the story works at all
3 - The Okabe who recorded the video is a potential future version of the Okabe we follow (expanded upon in Steins;Gate 0) who has spent years of his life trying to find a way to avoid Kurisu’s death, and finally finds a proper answer. He sends this information back in time as a video for his alternate past self
4 - That sounds like a Steins;Gate 0 plot point, so I assume that’s what you’re discussing. While the beta attractor field doesn’t converge on Suzuha and Mayuri going back in time to set in motion their side of the plan to save Kurisu, it’s the linchpin of the Vega and Altair ending in 0. The “Suzuha” in the special episode, assuming you’re talking about the extra anime-only ova, is actually Suzuha’s mother and not Suzuha herself. In the Steins;Gate worldline, Suzuha has no reason to travel to the past or have access to time travel in the first place
5 - Again, this sounds like a Steins;Gate 0 plotline? He essentially tells her not to give up and instructs her to travel to the past to get Okabe the motivation he needs to change the past for the sake of a better future
6 - I genuinely don’t know what you’re referring to, but I can only assume it’s more confusion with Yuki (Suzuha’s mom)? Because the “Suzuha” in the extra ova at the end of the season isn’t actually Suzuha but rather her mom, Yuki, and also isn’t a time traveler, it makes perfect sense that she wouldn’t have any future messages. Especially considering that Okabe’s sworn off using the extra properties of the Phonewave ever again in the Steins;Gate worldline

Daru's letter contains operation arclight plan. It was sent to Suzuha's phone one year after okabe choose to give up saving kurisu. It was revealed that there are two records sent from 2025. First one is okabe's record for operation skuld and the second one daru's record for operation arclight.

Oh, I always wondered why the timelines split just because Okabe sends a message back to Daru saying he say Kurisu dead which causes the presentation to then be cancelled, its not like Okabe cancelled the presentation it was SERN.
But why would they do that?
From my interpretation it wasn`t SERN that cancelled the presentation.
My theory is that when Okabe sends a message back to Daru saying that Kurisu was stabbed, that same message is caught by SERN`s Echelon in the previous week. In that same timeline, one week later, when Kurisu is actually found dead, Echelon can indeed confirm that the message sent by Okabe was indeed from the future.
Because of that, SERN starts investigating Okabe and discover how to time travel, which leads to the Third World War.
Because of the war, the Satellite like time machine was invented, which was used by Suzuha to go back in time. But she ended up colliding the time machine with the radio tower, causing the presentation to be cancelled => Kurisu survives.
I actually think that's the reason Okabe needs to fake Kurisu's death. Now that Kurisu is actually alive, Echelon can't confirm the message sent by Okabe was indead from the future. SERN does not discover about time machines => no war => no time machine => steins;gate achieved

I was wondering about the first dmail bcuz in ep 23, past okarin saw kurisu "dead" and thus, would send the dmail, which kinda originally triggered the alpha wordline events. Now I understand it... I see some ppl say its a time loop and after ep 24, the series events would repeat but that totally ruins the point of "changing the future", nonsense. Thanks

@@ParanoicoBR technically sern learning about time travel didnt cause world war 3 it caused them to use the time machine to create a dystopia where they are in charge. Using a time machine often creates unpredictable result so eventually sern messes up and creates a timeline where suzuha can go back in time to stop it from happening. My headcanon is that serns time machine couldnt go back further then when the time machine was created.

So to simplify. The rules of the World Lines mainly care about the continuity of perception for the active observer.

Since I discovered that anime could be more than energy beams and magic battles over a decade ago steins;gate has been THE anime I tell people to watch asking for recommendations. I always say it is the best anime ever created.
But recently I decided to rewatch the first series again to finish zero, which I decided to save for a rainy day when they had a mid season break. So knowing more about the show and the game, the series was way more enjoyable than even before. And when I finally finished zero I was literally bawling my eyes out like a freaking baby. The moment when hououin kyoma finally returns, while literally cringe af, is one of the best moments in anime history. It doesn’t even matter that we knew it was going to happen. It HAD to happen.
I couldn't agree more! Steins;Gate is my favorite anime, and my second-favourite show of all time, period! The pay-off in zero was soo good, I never imagined I'd be so happy just to see someone put on a labcoat

Time travel is my top favorite sci-fi genre and I only discovered Steins;Gate over a year ago. It is totally in my top 5 favorite animes. First place Yugioh. Great vid by the way.

I saw there is some confusion about which Okabe retains memories, but honestly I found it pretty straightforward.
Okabe's Reading Steiner activates whenever a past changes, but Okabe doesn't move in time. He stays in the same point in time, always.
That means Okabe 2 got replaced with Okabe 1 after the latter went back with Suzuha's time machine, to a later date Okabe 2 was at.
Okabe 0 would only replace Okabe 1 20 years after the fact, cause that's when his Reading Steiner would activate.
Bruh this story beat my ass, I had no clue what was going on but I could tell it was a great concept, then again I only read the first 3 chapters of the manga and watched a tiny bit of the first anime episode.
The alpha and beta attractor fields reminds of "constants and variables" form Bioshock Infinite.

I have a question about the finale. Apparently Okabe 1, after he faked Kurisu's death, he went to the future again via time machine with Suzuha, why did she disappeared and Okabe not? And we see that Okabe went to the future in Steins;Gate worldline after faking Kurisu's death, what happened to the Okabe that was living in the original Steins;Gate worldline (The one that was deceived)?
Because by then they've changed the worldline to Steins;Gate. And only ONE worldline can be active. Suzuha at that time did not need to come back to help Okabe. She came back in time because of World War 3. In the Steins;Gate timeline, WW3 probably never happens, so no reason to come back, thus she disappeared.
The Okabe who's being deceived stays there in that worldline as a possible timeline. It flows normally as it should and Okabe in that worldline repeats the same thing what the OG Okabe did, sends a D-Mail, and this time, it shifts from the Steins;Gate worldline to one of the alpha worldlines, not from Beta to Alpha, because saving Kurisu caused the world to shift from Alpha to S;G. The Okabe, who's being deceived, will eventually return (Alpha to S;G) to save Kurisu, and realises she had never actually died.
From here on out, I don't know for sure. This may create new timelines or a time loop for this to happen over and over again.
The S;G OG Okabe probably disappeared and has merged into the time travelled Okabe, who has just arrived with Suzuha's time machine. He doesn't remember what the S;G OG Okabe did in that worldline between 28th July and 21st August.

@@scruber64_ I think it loops back because the Okabe who found Kurisu lying in a pool of blood is the Okabe who was deceived. Basically Okabe who faked Kurisu's death also ended up recreating the action of Okabe who found Kurisu lying in a pool of blood.

@@utenarevo No problem, though I might got something wrong in my summary, like Deceived Okabe jumping from Steins Gate worldline to an Alpha worldline with his first D-mail. That isn't the case, since the shift from a Beta to Steins Gate worldline happens after the Nakabachi Paper gets destroyed, so Deceived Okabe repeats what the OG Okabe did; Beta to Alpha and back to Beta, NOT Steins Gate to Alpha and back to Steins Gate. Sorry if this is not well worded, I'll try my best to help if my comment is a bit confusing.
but in the yellow world line, okabe will not exist (or deleted?) and in that world line, Kurisu made a time machine to convince Kurisu's past to save Okabe by going to Okabe's past.
I think that movie is not considered canon.
Outstanding explanation. I recently finished Stein's Gate, but I am a little confused.
Okabe0--the one we saw in S1; in his timeline, both Mayuri and Kurusu are dead.
Okabe 1: One who got slapped, has Maruri but not Kurusu.
Okabe 2, who got the green oppa, assumes kurusu(alive) dead but have both
1.) So you said Okabe 2 did all the things Okabe 1 did, like d-mail and all, but why did he do (obviously) to save Kurusu but dint the news come of Kurusu being alive?
2.)It makes sense if o2 and 01 (dimention) merge because they are very similar, but how would o0 timeline merge or rewrite as it is very different?
3.) What happened to Okabe0 and Mayuri, who were in 5000 BCE?
I'm afraid I don't really understand your first question. Okabe saves Kurisu only in the final attempt using fake blood. In previous versions/attempts Kurisu actually dies so there won't be any news of her surviving. After the final succesful attempt, there may have been news of her survival. Okabe's internal monologue at the end states that he is happy Kurisu is alive in this wordline at least, even though they may never meet again (which they then still do).
For your second question: We know that when the wordline changes, Okabe overwrites the memories of the Okabe on that new worldline. Worldlines don't 'merge' exactly, since there is only ever one worldline in existence at one time. Everything in the previous wordline disappears, except for some memories that are retained. It is very difficult to say which version of Okabe/which set of Okabe's memories takes priority over the other when the worldline changes, and which Okabe is overwritten. It seems like, for reasons which are unclear, the worldline defaults to Okabe 2's perspective. The worldline is restructured around him once he finishes operation Skuld succesfully, and the memories of Okabe 2 are the ones that are retained. Okabe 0 and his future are erased.
That being said, to your third question: This is left a bit open for interpretation. It is probable that when Okabe 0 finds them he gives Suzuha and Mayuri a new battery for their time machine so that they can return to the future (2025 or earlier), so that Mayuri can adopt Kagari. I don't think Okabe 0 himself will return to the future he came from because he has said goodbye and convergence dicatates he should not be around anymore. So it is probable Okabe 0 will die in the past, either in that wasteland or he could go to some time like the year 1835 and "live out his life" peacefully there. Of course, "living out his life" is a matter of perspective, since from a different perspective Okabe 0's worldline ceases to be immediately in its entirety once all conditions for reaching Steins;Gate are in place. Okabe 0's worldline will be erased and turn into the Steins;Gate worldline after all.

Hmmm, I guess I look at it a bit differently. I don't think about it as the three Okabe's having separate "endings," but more like they are all parts along the way to the same ending. I also don't think about worldlines as "merging," but rather as completely "overwriting", because "merging" implies that multiple worldlines exist at the same time (which they don't) and that equal parts from all wordlines fuse together to become one Frankensteined wordline (which they don't). But, yes, in the end there is only one worldline (though this is always the case), which Okabe 1 and 0 contributed to, in which Okabe 2 (who still used to be Okabe 1 and will now never become Okabe 0) lives happily ever after with both Mayuri and Kurisu being alive.
For your second question, I absolutely love time travel stories that are a bit more complex and robust and original! Usually, like in Marvel and DC, there are only the two types of overdone time travel variants.
One variant is that of the "self-consistent timeline", in which everything was predetermined, you have no influence whatsoever, and through time travel you end up causing the very event you are trying to change. Examples of this are Terminator, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Predestination, and 12 Monkeys.
The other variant is that of the multiverse theory, so with multiple timelines existing at the same time. This is basically and "anything goes" type of time travel, there is no consistency, you can change whatever you want in the past and the future will readjust, and paradoxes don't seem to be possible. I think of this almost as not actual time travel, but hopping from one parallel universe to another similar one which is behind or ahead of the world you are leaving.
(There is also a third variant which combines these two in a bad way, by for example adhering to a multiverse theory of time travel but still claiming that paradoxes exist, for no reason at all.)
The time travel rules of Steins;Gate beautifully combine the two overdone variants in a way that makes sense by introducing the concept of attractor fields as universal laws, and the concepts of D-mails and time leaping. I find this amazingly creative and original, and it circumvents the problems that those two overdone time travel versions face. The self-consistency variant has as drawback that nothing the characters do really matters because nothing can be changed, and the multiverse variant has as a drawback that there are no consequences to the use of time travel, since I see this as the time traveler "hopping" between parallel worlds while leaving the one they just left intact just as it was.
The classic two variants are indeed easy to understand, but I find that they lacking in gravity and/or agency which makes it hard for me to care about the story. I personally hugely prefer time travel stories like Steins;Gate.

Technically you can also save both Mayuri and Kurisu by escaping both of the alpha and beta attractor field into the -0,xxxxx omega convergence (alpha = 0,xxxxx and beta = 1,xxxxx except steins gate). But by doing so, even though you save both of them and prevent both sern's dystopia and WW3, all of another lab mems beside Akiha Rumiho will never knows Okabe Rintarou because the lab itself was never existed. If you completed the vn you might get what i mean. In -0,xxxxx i can assume the future of that worldline won't end up to both dystopia and WW3 because Suzuha managed to completed her mission by giving okabe the IBN5100, and since the lab was never existed, phonewave will never existed which means, sern will never completed their time machine since their completed time machine was based to the phonewave's mechanism itself. And since Suzuha's mission in omega worldline was to obtain IBN5100, not saving Kurisu means that Kurisu wasn't completed any time machine research to cause WW3. But, it's not like the future of omega worldline would 100% save. Like i said, Suzuha still time traveled which means there's something wrong in the future. But at least, in that worldline both of Mayuri and Kurisu still alive.

That's a good question, and one that is addressed in the Visual Novel source material, though it really deserves a more lengthy explanation than the VN gives, because it is indeed pretty confusing. In the VN, Okabe narrates the following:
"Before we returned to July 28th, I had to confirm something with Suzuha. Was there a chance that I might run into myself from last time - the me who killed Kurisu? She replied that wasn't possible. The worldline where I killed Kurisu is minutely different from the one to which the time machine will take us. However, it is important to remembert that worldlines are not parallel worlds."
So, as far as I understand it, when you travel back in the time machine, you arrive in a different worldline (though only say 0.00001% different), with a different and unique version of the past in which the time machine has never landed (or has not landed yet). The time machine does not travel to the past directly connected to the current worldline you are on before leaving, but always to a worldline with just a minutely different divergence number. Why this is the case, seems to not be explained. Just that this is the way physical time travel works, apparently. So different from time leaping.

I think there is still more space for the story to develop. Ever since I watched the show I've had a thought. What happened to CERN/SERN? I know they don't have Kurisu to work on the time machine but surely they would eventually find someone who can make one. In the show the only people who were able to make a time machine/time leap machine/time email teleporter were Okabe, Maho, Kurisu and Daru. They did do it with the help of each other however I find it hard to believe that those 4 people capable of creating time travel happened to come across each other and there isn't a single other person in the world who can also do it.
I think CERN/SERN is bound to eventually create the time machine in the Steins;Gate world line even without the help of Kurisu. I think that leaves the possibility for another Steins;Gate season with a proper antagonist. In the original Steins;Gate season the antagonist was CERN/SERN. In Steins;Gate 0 it kinda was Leskinen but mainly was DURPA/DARPA, Stratfo/Stratfor and the Russians. If they were to make a second season with CERN/SERN as the bad guys again with one or multiple antagonist scientists who are about as smart as Okabe, Kurisu, Daru and Maho could be introduced. It leaves a possibility for another season however it'd probably make the Steins;Gate movie non-cannon and future Okabe's theory where there is only one Steins;Gate world line where Kurisu and Mayushii survives would have to be wrong if they wanted a good ending or would they have to use no time travel to take down SERN/CERN to not change the world line.
I get where you're coming from! It is still very much possible that at some point someone, be it SERN/CERN or another organisation, will discover time travel still. The ending of Steins;Gate does not really dispute this, it does not even claim that Mayuri and Kurisu will be safe or live long lives on the Steins;Gate worldline. The only guarantee the ending gives is that the Steins;Gate wordline is free from those horrible attractor fields that otherwise guarantee their deaths. But the future of the Steins;Gate worldline is unknown, anything could still happen, anyone could die at any moment, and time travel could still at some point be discovered. So a lot of what you suggest are very plausible plot points.
However, I personally don't think it is necessary to explore these plots. To me, the ending of the original Steins;Gate is already perfect. Part of me wouldn't want to ruin that with any canon story that takes place after it end. (The Steins;Gate deja vu movie already isn't considered canon by the way.)
And I do agree that Steins;Gate has lacked a real proper antagonist (however maybe it doesn't really need one either).
Still though, I love me some Steins;Gate, and will probably consume any Steins;Gate content that is produced regardless.

SERN let go the time travel research after Steins;Gate.
They aren't even the true bad guys in Steins;Gate, but the anime left that out from the story. The true antagonist in the franchise is the Committee of 300. Before Steins;Gate in Chaos;Head, they tried a different method to make their Human Domestication Project a success, and after Steins;Gate they again tried a different thing.
Remember that Steins;Gate is only Part 2 of a longer franchise called Science Adventure (SciADV). The future of the Steins Gate worldline is not unknown. So read the rest of SciADV if you want to know

And finally, if Okabe, Mayuri, and Suzuha go back to a time when Stein's timeline has not yet been formed and live and die in that period, won't the fact that these 3 people don't exist in the future disrupt Stein's timeline?

when you think about it the way Okabe approach the "unsending" of the d-mails is counterintuitive. I mean f.e. he can go beyond and send a d-mail to himself further back saying something like "dont send d-mails" or f.e. in the case where he learned that Moeka is working for SERN he could send himself a d-mail saying "dont trust Moeka"
Another thing that was never explained was the first D-mail. I mean he sent it to Daru but what did Daru do to change the future? We only know that he recieved bunch of messages 1 week before the event but doesnt he have to actively do something to change the future? Or is it like just the existence of the mail enough
You raise interesting questions! I think as to why Okabe doesn't send D-mails to much further in the past, such as a message like "don't send D-mails", is because although effective, it is also a risk that other things might change because of such a new broad instruction send back so much further into the past, due to the butterfly effect. What if past Okabe, upon reading that D-mail, does not respond in the way predicted, and instead of never sending D-mails, he starts experimenting "more cautiously" and sends different testing-D-mails than he did before? Or what if past Okabe, who doesn't take everything seriously enough yet, makes a joke about the Organisation and just shows Moeka the D-mail about not trusting her, thinking it all to be a joke? When sending those types of D-mails, the worldline may change in unknown ways, which are very difficult to reset, and makes it even more difficult to reach the exact original worldline again. This was also why Okabe undid the D-mails in reverse order of sending them. "Cancellation D-mails" on the other hand, though less efficient, are precise. You know exactly how you are influencing the past, causing you to be able to largely ignore a butterfly effect.
For your second point, about how the first D-mail changed the wordline, I believe the first D-mail was picked up by Eschelon, which is SERN's system that continuously scans for evidence of time travel, which put the future gadget lab on SERN's radar, leading to all the FB/Moeka/Lab invasion stuff on the alpha worldline.

It would be ineffective to send "don't send d-mails" because all the D-Mails which were sent by him and others were never sent on the current worldline, they were just received. So this won't change anything.

I think the latter. Though another way of looking at it is that the Okabe from Steins;Gate 0 ceases to exist once the Steins;Gate worldline takes full effect after the necessary steps in the beta worldline have been taken. After all, worldlines aren't really parallel worlds; they don't all exist simultaneously in parallel with eachother. There is only ever one worldline in existence.
It also does not seem likely that the consciousness from the Okabe in Steins;Gate 0 would overwrite the consciousness of the other version of Okabe. Also this would be very tragic if it were the case. You could still choose to believe this if you prefer, since the show is a bit vague on this topic. I write a bit more about the possible priorities of consciousness retainment of the multiple versions of Okabe near the end of the comment thread with Jake Halo in this comment section, if you are interested to read more about that.
DECEIVE THE WORLD
Coming at this late but there is one "plot hole" in the series that I can't find a satisfying answer too.
So Okabe 2 saves Kurisu by stabbing himself and using his own blood. Okabe 1 sees it, is tricked and goes on to send the first D-Mail and for that Okabe everything that we see in the show goes on to happen. BUT, where does Okabe 2 go?
He has lost a lot of blood, he gets in the time machine with Suzuha but when they depart (unsure of the destination), Suzuha begins to disapear because she no longer exists in the SG World Line that has just been created. But where does Okabe go? Does he disapear too? Does his mind just land back into an new Okabe's head? If so, why does he still have the wound? In the new SG World Line he never injured himself, but we know he is still inured because Miyuri goes to visit him in hospital.
The only thing I can think of is that he is stabbed by someone completely unrelated and ends up in hospital. It isn't a satisfying answer but it is the best I can come up with. I hope this makes sense, just in case, I will sum it up here in a different way:
After Okabe 2 saves Kurisu and departs in the time machine with his injury, where does he pysically go?
If he disapears and his memories are sent into the head of a different Okabe then he still need to get injured. If he does appear pysically somewhere... where?
Suzuha disappears only after they arrive, not during the travel. That's just some visual asteathic the anime chose when it adapted the scene. The VN is quite clear on this

1. Okabe 2 alters past like making Mayushii get a green upa rather than a metal upa and doing several things... so doing that made a new world line (that is Stein's Gate ... so what changes makes a new worldline? how to determine whether the change is enough or not? Because we've to keep in mind the effect of Butterfly Effect
I think you give the correct answer yourself already: Actions that have a greater impact/consequence by causing a huge butterfly effect will alter the wordline in a proportionally greater manner compared to actions that only generate a very limited butterfly effect. In the case of avoiding the entire SERN dystopian future, the change/butterfly effect needs to be enormous. Mayuri getting the metal Upa has the huge effect that leads to the Nakabachi paper not burning up as it travels to Russia to there ignite the cold war for getting a time machine. Small, inconsequential changes too change the worldline, although only slightly (say, 0.00001% compared to 0.08% on the divergence meter), so not enough to switch attractor fields, which is necessary to avoid the SERN dystopian future.

@priyamdatta9292 New worldlines can be created yes, but only in the sense that the current one changes to that new one. There only ever exists one wordline at a time. Multiple don't exist at the same time running next to each other as parallel worlds. The only worldline that exists is the one that Okabe is currently observing. The Steins;Gate worldline is fragile, just balancing between the alpha and beta attractor fields, so Kurisu messing with the past through time travel is risky and therefore not what Okabe wanted.
I think the original Steins;Gate story is brilliant, but I find the deja vu movie a bit lacking when it comes to handling consistent time travel rules in comparison (or I just don't really get the movie). Kurisu seems to just 'happen' to run into young Okabe and says the right things by accident/on the fly.
Personally, I just enjoy the deja vu movie as a fun emotional ride, and try not to think too much about the specifics of the time travel plot in that one. The movie isn't canon anyway, so I don't let it detract from the brilliance of the original SG plot.

as shown is S;G0, after okabe 0 sends the message to okabe 2, he hops in the time machine and goes to save suzuha and mayuri from 18000BC. but how does this happen if okabe 0 would cease to exist when okabe 2 eventually goes through the 3 weeks of hell and finds kurisu alive even after undoing the first d-mail? I think the existence of the steins gate worldline is contradictory to okabe 0 saving suzu and mayuri.

How does the deletion of the first d-mail change world lines? Moeka and FB already knew about that Information so a deletion would not be enough. Or am I missing something.
It would make a difference, since at that point, FB and Moeka do not know about the lab's time travel experimentation anymore, since the previous cancellation D-mail that was sent ordered Moeka to stop looking for the IBN. This means Moeka never becomes a lab member, so she never learns about the time travel experiments. So neither does FB, and neither does SERN. Not through them at least. So at that point in the story, the first D-mail is the only evidence that still links the lab to SERN.
If sern notices the dmail some time in the future after the dmail is sent why was sern directly connected to the future gadget lab
SERN notices them earlier because Okabe shows Moeka their IBN and time machine.

@@DaTLMusic Even so the D-mail would still matter, since it still causes SERN to find out about the future gadget lab, just at a later date. An explanation for why SERN could have noticed the D-mail at a later date, though sending still explaining why sending it causes an immediate change in the worldline, is that SERN discovering the future gadget lab and Kurisu leads them to create a time machine and also alter the past, thus also changing the "present" (the time at which the D-mail was sent) radically. The most radical change is the materialization of Suzuha's time machine inside the radio building of course, leading to the cancellation of Dr. Nakabachi's presentation. From our perspective, we just experience that change to the past instantaneously, even though the further discovering of the lab and development of the time machine is still chronologically in the future.
I'm not sure if I've explained this very well. It is safe to say that this is a poorly understood plotpoint, and has been debated on forums (for example here: scifi.stackexchange.com/questions/85384/in-steinsgate-the-show-how-does-the-first-d-mail-change-the-universe). I'm not saying this explanation is most definitely the correct one, but it is the best one we have available, I think.

@@DaTLMusic Ah right, I do somewhat explain that in this video, starting at 12:06! Basically, yes, the first D-mail is still sent, which is actually a good thing, because Okabe needs to have the experiences he has in the alpha worldline in order to find the solution to Steins;Gate ("for Okabe 0 to exist"). So the timeline is kept intact, the important events that constitute worldline shifts and attractor fields are unchanged. The only change is that Kurisu laying in the pool of blood isn't actually dead. This does not mess with the continuity of events up to that point, since no "fact" as observed by Okabe has been changed. This is a necessary requirement for Okabe's future self to be able to exist, and for him to be connected to the "present" version of Okabe, so that he can give him the solution to save Kurisu.
So, sending the first D-mail is not a problem, it is good, necessary even. It just gets deleted again, as happened "before," seemingly instantaneously. So it's somewhat reminiscent of a timeloop (though it's not actually a "loop").
So, every D-mail that has ever sent needs to be sent again by the young version of Okabe. They just also all get deleted again the same way. The net result is nothing, 0, except for the memories that Okabe himself agains and keeps, which lead him to Steins;Gate.

Yes, some other Attractor Fields appears in non adapted parts of the novel,side-games and especially in audio dramas.
The knowed at this moment are Omega, Gamma, Delta, Epsilon
Adding onto what the other replier said, we see the Delta attractor field in the Faris ending of the Steins;Gate visual novel. It’s a world where the future is safe and all of Okabe’s friends are in theory (we don’t get to see much of it), but none of them know him or potentially each other, which is what keeps them safe from disaster. It’s bittersweet, but technically what Okabe wanted?
Hey I'm on episode 18 rn, and the show just seems to get more depressing each episode. I also hate traveling to past as it undoes character development. So, does the show have a happy ending? Answer without spoiling pls.
I get why it seems like it undoes character development. However, Okabe's character does keep developing, since he retains his memories. Okabe's character development in turn causes the characters around him to respond and develop differently. By the differences in how to characters respond to the changing Okabe, you learn a lot more about the characters themselves as well. The characters forgetting is a big part of what makes the show so tragic, but also so gripping and beautiful to me. Or rather, it's not really them forgetting, but Okabe being the only one who remembers everything, creating a unique feeling of isolation and loneliness for the character.
I admit that that is a very heavy subject and tone, and that it isn't for everyone. However, the ending is brilliant, has a great payoff and is definitely worth sticking around for!
I don't understand why Haru gets Okabe's message on Alpha line.
I mean, since Suzuha crashed on the radio station and cancelled the conference, weren't we supposed to be moved to Alpha Worldline where Kurisu never died and therefore Okabe never sent the message??? Like, I know his phone didn't register it because he didn't send it actually, but why did Haru receive it??? Does D-mail also travel different worldlines???

Okabe 2 is most likely the version of Okabe whose consciousness reaches the Steins;Gate worldline. Okabe 0, the version of Okabe from Steins;Gate 0, will be erased/will cease to exist once the worldline definitively switches from the beta worldline to the Steins;Gate worldline.
Okabe 0 probably wouldn't travel back with Mayuri and Suzuha to the time he left, since the attractorfield dictates that Okabe shouldn't be around anymore at some point in that year, usually resulting in him dying or becoming comatose, so he escapes this fate by leaving that time/year entirely in the time machine. Most likely, he would take Mayuri and Suzuha to a different time period in which to live out their lives. That is, until the worldline is changed to the Steins;Gate worldline, at which point they would be erased. (It's a matter of perspective as to "when" this occurs.)
As far as the Dejavu movie is concerned, I feel like that plot isn't as... logically consistent as the show. I believe it takes a lot of liberties for the sake of entertaining storytelling. The movie isn't canon anyway, so I try to not worry too much about those details and to just enjoy the movie for the fantastic emotional ride that it is.

And yes, there is only ever one worldline in existence, they don't continuously run parallel to eachother at the same time. So at the end of the show, indeed only the Steins;Gate wordline exists.

1: Not really sure the movie end was dumb but basically Kurisu does bunch of dumb stuff and manages to leave the LOAD REGION of the simulation and go to the LFR where Okabe is and nab him back to the LOAD REGION

3: By deleting/killing [Kurisu] changes the worldline just enough that the missile comes late

How could Kurisu know in the beta worldline before she dies that Okabe had the wired first conversation with her which occured in the alpha worldline, when he is the only person having memory from other worldlines?
If memory services me right, then the weird conversation Kurisu refers to is the interaction she had with the Okabe on his first attempt to rescue her. She mistakes the original Okabe for his future version she had that conversation with.
Just bc i wanted to answer this only to find it answered. Ima add my fun. Im assuming The moment you refer too is kurisu’s flip on okabe In episode 1 saying “try to recall 15 minutes ago, you were Trying your damndest to tell me something” this episode spoils it all but its played off so well its villainous. Its hinted more than once that theres more than 1 okabe during the 1st episode .Its also why okabe had to try so hard to avoid himself in zero . Lastly and by far the biggest tease is okabes scream. You hear it loud and clear in ep 1 from when he pours out his blood but it just goes over everyone as the next scene is kurisu on the floor in blood.
Its so good that it almost feels like the whole anime could have been just that first episode. I personally stick to the idea that okabe started in steins gate bc of the paradox But it was that first d-mail that branched him into beta and confirmed kurisus death.
Based on schrodinger’s cat, kurisu was in limbo as we can confirm okabe 1 being in the same time line as okabe 0
Had he continued his day normally its implied kurisu dies. Or she lives and future okabe fades as he never existed since that first message of kurisus death was never sent.
This implies that its the message itself that lifted the lid and confirmed kurisus death as an absolute. Theres far better explanations on this but if either of you gents have opinions on that first dmail id love to hear them. Its all just good fun with theoretical topics so feel free to debunk me. Its just what i choose to follow as it seems to fit

SERN didn't save Kurisu. In that Alpha worldline, Suzuha's time machine landed badly on the roof, thus causing the presentation to be canceled. No presentation -> Kurisu alive.
What is the relevance of mayuri going back to the rooftop and telling her past self to slap okabe 2? it's literally the climax of steins gate zero and you didn't mention it. is it irrelevant
It is a necessary step plot-wise, but it did not need to be, if Mayuri had just decided on her own to slap Okabe. I feel like the fact that Mayuri needed convincing was thought up by the writers so that Steins;Gate 0 had more of a point/story. Since my video is only meant to fully explain Steins;Gate, not Steins;Gate 0, mentioning that Mayuri needed convincing to slap Okabe seemed superfluous.

Isn't it unnecessary for mayuri to go back in time for the slap, since towards the end of the show, the okabe 0 in zero is already motivated to save kurisu? and when he got older thru hard work he (still okabe 0) eventually did find a way.

Okabe 0 did get motivated already, but it took some time before he found that motivation again. By that time, it was already too late to redo things (time machine fuel went bad, Leskinen found the time machine, etc). Therefore, Okabe 2 needed to be motivated "quicker", hence the slap. Apparently, Okabe 0's video message to Okabe 2 did not sufficiently motivate Okabe 2 by itself. It only showed him the door he could take, but Mayuri's slap was what motivated him to go through that door in that moment.

However it seemed that it wasn't too late for okabe zero to find a way to save kurisu and the world "because he did after all", in the future of okabe zero he was able to send the video to okabe 2, he didn't fail.
Doesn't this mean that all the slap did was motivate okabe 2 to watch the video and try riding the time machine again, which is shallow, trivial, and also the timing of mayuri is very plot convinient.
What are your thoughts on this?
@@deancamba2820 Okabe 0 did indeed succeed in doing his part, but he was unable to himself save Kurisu. He needed Okabe 2 to do this for him. But we mean the same thing by this point.
The slap is indeed purely meant as motivation. I agree with you that this plot point feels rather forced. I don't think it was necessary to create a convoluted explanation for why Mayuri acted in the way she did. I think it already made sense in the original. It seems like the writers really wanted to make Steins;Gate 0, but didn't think the video message alone was enough to build an entire show around, so they added elements like this. This does make the plot more contrived, and less brilliantly elegant than the original, in my opinion.

I dont get how the traveling back in ep 24 works like he comes from a beta worldline travels back and is in the Steins Gate World Line shouldn’t there be 2 Okabes in the Steins Gate Worldline and isnt Okabe 2 now missing in his worldline? And i think you are missing a beta wordline the Video Message is something like a DMail so here is a switch in the Wordline as well one where he doesn’t get the video and one where he gets
Idk if someone is interested i have two theories about the ending. The first one say that every person of one time only exists once. So Okabe can see his past self cos they aren’t from the same time but when he goes back to tje future the SG Okabe will vanish and be replaced by the Beta Okabe who travelt. This Theory sounds possible cos when a WL Switches only the memorys of the people and maybe the place where they are, are changed. But the person isnt changed otherwise theres no need to replace memorys.
My other theory is that: The burning of the papers are a divergenz Point so at the moment where they burn the wordlline shifts to SG. Now beta Okabe travels Back in Time change the past (and doesnt change it xD) travels back to the future and when hes in the time machine and he travels across the divergenz Point of the burning documents the worldline shifts to SG now hes Reading Steiner triggers and the memorys of SG Okabe are replaced with beta timetraveling Okabes Memorys. So to make it clear okabe doesn’t travel back in the SG worldline just travels back in beta worldline and while he is traveling WL Switch => Reading Steiner. Now there is the question why SG Okabe has the wound and with this theory it could be that Okabe gets wounded at this time is a convergenz Point (maybe just cos thats how wl work i dont know).

@@taufanmaynard8324 we know for sure that only one wordline exists at the same time. When the wordline got changed the events which happend and will happen change as well and the evevents on the old WL did never happen but Okabe can remember them.

I only watched steins gate and steins gate 0 1 time and onderstod all of this just from the anime so this video was not need for me but but it does put it all together well for people who don't have the iq for steins gate. I was 12 when I watched it
