Hey man, i remember when this game first came out, i had no internet, so everything i learned was out of trial and error, i think a lot of us did back in the day, all i remember from back then was that this was way more intense than warbirds II.
Just downloaded this game as my squad is rumbling about moving from War Thunder to IL2 - A couple things I can point out in your video that might improve your flying skills - Your "combat" flaps improve your turn rate because, for almost any aircaft, "flaps 1" will be your performance flap setting, giving more lift than drag. Any setting above flaps 1 will cause more drag than lift, while decreasing the stall speed, and steepening the approach path. When you land, keep this rule in mind: AIRSPEED is controlled by PITCH, and your SINK RATE is controlled by POWER. You got them backwards in the video. Shoot your approach to the runway from a height of ~1000' AGL and aim for the threshold by keeping it in the same position on your windscreen; If the aim point moves up on the canopy, you're sinking too fast - add power, little nose up to compensate the airspeed. If the aim point moves down on the canopy, you're too high. Reduce power, nose down to keep your approach speed. Your approach speed for any given aircraft is determined by multiplying the stall speed by 1.3
I just installed this game and crashed many times while attempting to land. Mostly due to high airspeed and wrong angle. This video was the most helpful to me. I just landed a Spitfire successfully twice. Thanks Jef
Same lol, i just try to level it and then just slowly stall it cuz i just fucking CANT slow down and i'll either crash or completly overrun the runway.
haha all his tutorial vids are awsome and i think whats funny is that i have played flight sims my whole life so im basiclly self taught in all these tactics, and basiclly all the things that jef is teaching us in this vid i have used and im like "holy crap i already know how to do that! :D" it makes me more comfident in getting ready to play this sim (Y) how many of you have had or have that same feeling? lol
Anyone having issues going to 3rd person remember the option to have the 3rd person camera is not an option on certain difficulties, control for it is usually F2
Just to give advice: There's a little white arc with a black ball in it. That is the turn and bank indicator. You can use that to perfectly coordinate your turns by keeping that ball in the center using your rudder. If the ball isn't in the center, in a turn or straight-and-level flight, you're in a slip and flying sideways.
The 2-point and 3-point actually describes two different styles of landing, not the design of the landing gear. In a 2-point landing, you touch down on two wheels first, then settle onto the third wheel, this is also called a wheel landing; a 3-point landing is touching down on all 3 wheels at the same time. An airplane with two mains and a tail wheel is a plane with conventional landing gear; also called a tail dragger. Most modern planes have tricycle gear, with two mains and a nosewheel.
I played with the keyboard and mouse all the time, the trick is to set the time to 1/2 or 1/4 the speed so that you can have a much better control of your plane.
like you mention there's a lot of Control keys, but in the 4 last videos including this one did not bother to either call out the keys being pressed or shown on screen, would it be easier using the joystick since one has to mess with lesser Key or remember each keyboard key?
@monkeybrains911 Depends on your keybinds. Go to settings, find the "Controls" and study what keys you have assigned to what. Change them, apply, there you go. I personally have zoom toggling bind to one of the mouse buttons and separate levels of zoom to three different keys.
Thanks so much for this. I wanted to play this game, and I'm no casual gamer, but I found its learning curve daunting. For example, I thought my joystick was causing the rise and roll that you fixed wtih aileron and (presumably) elevator trim controls. How do they not have that in the manual?
I hear ya buddy im going through the same thing I just bought Il2 1946 its going to be the first combat flight sim I have played on PC (however its not my first flight sim I have ever played) I have a Logitech Attack 3 joystick I have heard mixed reviews about it but so far its pretty legit! hope you try it out!
They were made at different times. For example, the planes modeled for the original "il-2" would be much worse then the more recent expansions, such as pacific fighters or forgotten battles.
Hey I have a question because 8m just wondering on single m8ssions 0r an y missions can you switch to other friendly aircraft and control them or is it not a feature.
I used to be able to land flawlessly with this now I just crash every time plane falls like a brick idk if its a bug or me but cant seem to land anymore
You think you have it bad when it comes to landing? I cant land any plane ever since i got a joystick! I was doing more or less fine when it came to landing when using a keyboard but with a joystick i always lose my gear and nose dive into the runway (if i even hit the runway and not that pesky tanker thats rolling around the strip...). Either that or my plane starts to bounce like a goddamn basketball and then i hit the runway... either way works i guess :s
@jefmajor Try FreeTrackNoIR. For that you only need a webcam, and the program is free. There are other alternatives aswell. Works fairly well, actually. Nice vid :)
It is to warn you that your flaps are down. It helps a lot. Trust me. Pretty much, never have anything but raised flaps unless you are turning in combat, landing, or taking off.
Hello there I am just starting with this game. First time flying combat sim, I used to use FSX. Tried a fighter pilot campaing, but with very bad results. My question is: where should I start? MODs or not? Thanks a lot.
No reason not to use mods unless you're computer illiterate or don't have the space/bandwidth for them. Far as bad results go you just need to learn the limitations and strengths of your plane relative to the enemy's. If you're trying to turn fight in a p47 with a 109 for instance, you're likely going to die fast. The general rule of thumb for each nation goes like this: British fighters are good at turning and have decent acceleration but bad top speed. Generally obsolete by late-war standards though still extremely dangerous at lower altitudes. American fighters are fat, heavy, durable with good to great armament, most of them are speed demons with bad turning circles, to use them well you really need to manage your energy efficiently (learn how to change prop pitch and manipulate your radiator, don't get lured into turning fights, instead go for sniping passes) Russian fighters are jack of all trades, masters of absolutely none (with the exception of the mig3 which is faster than anything in the early war at medium-high altitudes) they also tend to have limited ammo. German fighters are almost always better at climbing than their enemies, so if you can lure your enemy into a climbing match you'll likely get them to stall out first and snipe them on the rebound, otherwise they're like the Russian fighters, generally not masters in any particular field, with few exceptions (ta-152 and fw190 are both speed demons only rivaled by late American designs) Japanese tend to be extremely brittle but also extremely agile, with turn fighting characteristics rivaling biplanes. Avoid low-speed turning fights against them at all costs, especially if you're in an American plane. Other than that they also have decent speed and excellent climbing characteristics only surpassed by the 109s of Germany. This translates into extremely dangerous when in the hands of an experienced pilot, but also very obsolete by late war standards, American campaigns against them tend to turn into turkey shoots real fast. Italian planes are generally pretty poor with their early designs, but once the 202 and 205 come around they become very worthy adversaries. They generally are designed to be dogfighters with characteristics rivaling the 109s but with a higher top speed and a slightly more stable profile (less torque effects and generally just easier to aim/fly in) I would highly recommend the B.A.T. mod with the latest update if you have the time/space for it, if not you can settle for VP mod which is also quite large (I think around 30 gigs vs BAT's 80) but is much easier to install. I assume coming from FSX that filesize isn't a big issue for you though. Happy hunting.
@@Birdy890This is great advice, appreciated. Now I think I'll have a much better idea of how to engage the enemy. I'll give a try to BAT's for sure. Thanks a lot mate!
somehow i landed at around 150, right on the runway, but still manages to break the wheels almost every single time... (*i practice with a bf109), i guess there should be a way to control rate of descend?
Helpful but doesn't explain the weird stall/roll i experienced after take off flying level at 90% throttle and not at stall speed. I was well over. I simply tried to make a right turn and teh plane decided to dive and woudl nto do anthing else.
i have a little problem during the flight, when i've already took off of the runway, i gain altitude and i raise the flaps, my plane rises up a little without touching anything, and i have to press the 'elevator up' key continuously to stay neutral, i don't have a joystick. Maybe this could be solved having one of them?
thx shadowghost actually I've learnt to land the 109. you have to raise the nose real high in order to do that... still trippy landing but at least no broken wheels anymore : )
lol OHHHHH okay okay I know what your talking about, I have to do the same thing when landing a P40 kittyhawk I think it has something to do with th diameter of the propeller! I have this sim (not installed yet) but "birds of steel" has the same sort of physics kind of a nice pre-training. lol
No, you can't. Just try it. You might be able to take off and land, but that's about all you'll manage. This is a combat sim - there's no point in playing without proper controls.
I really really really enjoy your tutorials AND "let's play IL2" Videos. They are the shit. I'm writing this comment now to ask you for advice. I'm having trouble trimming my flight. Is there anything more detailed you can share with us about that topic? Like..when you plane banks left..how do you need to trim it and in what "steps" you should trim it. like...hitting the button 5 times or less/more? please keep making IL2 videos. best regards Egoleech.
What joystick should I buy for IL-2? I'm thinking of buying IL-2 Sturmovik: The Complete Edition and IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946, and this will be my first flight/WWII simulator. Any suggestions?
:P bf109s are historiclly known for breaking their landing gears during landings and uh since this game is historiclly accurate with its aircraft maby you should do some 109 studying instead of flight sim studying lol idk thats my theory anyways i hope it helps friend :)
