Honestly, I feel like it's a bit funny that people need such a video. I'm not an old man by any means, but thanks to the good amount of terrain detail (unlike in say, 1946 where the terrain was a mostly a bit too basic yet), navigation in Il-2 is exactly the same as navigation in real life with a paper map and a compass, but even easier because you get to choose your height to look around from - which isn't so quick or easy as a pedestrian. The thing you learn in this vid is basically something you shoulda long been taught in school. What if your phone/GPS device runs outta battery? lol The only challenge there really is about airborne navigation in Il-2 is when you cannot see dry land (either due to being in clouds or over sea)... Or if you don't keep track of where you started from and what rough heading you've been flying from the start. The maps are sizeable, but the irl issue of going off your paper map or whatever is nonexistent. Either way, nice vid.
Before I always heard just advises like watch the landscape to see forests, cities, lakes to orient yourself. I guess that helps too but boy from up there everything looks the same. This video is exactly what I needed!
As a first time player (1 day) I'm very thankful to you for your detailed navigational planning. I wondered how to use the map in the first place, though technical it is very much realistic. I gave it a big thumbs up and I too will adopt this technique once I get a little fly time and better understanding of mapping my joystick out properly. Always the hardest thing to do is get used to the keyboard layout when applying different flight system controls after flying FSX for sometime. Cheers mate! :-)
Stop apologising for yourself, you know your stuff and explain things clearly and concisely. Certainly very helpful for me, having just moved to il2 BoX from RoF (I know, late to the party), but keep doing your thing man. Actually practical and useful.
Exceptional, I'm new to the Sim and these practical tactics and strategies are ones I'm definitely going to implement as my new Nav rules. Thanks for your work on this.
Hey, my buddies and I are getting the game very soon and the main thing that we want to do is man a huge bomber like the He 111 H6 or something like that. We decided that I was going to be the navigator even though I have no experience with navigating in this game and real life. I appreciate that you made this simplified, beginner guide to navigating. But I was wondering if you would be willing to make another, more in-depth guide? So that I could learn the advanced stuff down to the nitty-gritty.
Shane67000 Hi mate, yes I’ve been thinking of doing that but I just need to find the time. Honestly, the methods shown in this video is all I use despite being a real world pilot. If you plan a flight using an accurate speed and hold a heading you should be able to find everything. Introducing wind drift corrections etc opens a whole other can of worms! Just don’t forget to start your click on each leg ;)
I've shared your video and the mission-planner link with the guys I fly with as we will be transferring to BoX in the coming months. Hoping to practice with the info you've provided.
Darbzy, I'm flying with the ACG and we are currently finishing up our BoB campaign. We will migrate to the BoX platform next. Kai Lae suggested I ask you how you got your Yak (???). sometime maybe you can join us on ACG TS and fill me in? :) 5./JG26_Flyby (aka Longbowdt on You tube) out
Martin Brehmer No, there is wind in IL2 so the GS and IAS will usually be a little different, but to assume they are the same for simplicity works fine.
No problem. If you are playing on the TAW server the mission planner is built into the website, just click on the map. If you are just playing solo then hit ‘O’.
Press O. Stupid Il-2 devs didn't put it on M like in every other game in history. lol You can change it tho, the controls settings have a lot of bindings but you can search for things.
Hi, just found this tutorial. Excellent m8 very useful ! Answered all my questions. Have you done any more ? So if you are forced of course because you've been bumped, how do you find out where you are to get back on the correct heading ? Well done Doc 👏
Thanks Darbzy, you make it sound so simple. I was expecting to have to dust off the trigonometry I never quite mastered many years ago in high school! While I finish setting up my flight controls I'll look out for a timer of some sort. Apart from an Iphone, what else is commonly used?
JayGee It’s a piece of cake with a little practice - and very rewarding! I’ve actually started using the cockpit clock as I’m now flying in VR. An digital egg timer would work too ;)
@@darbz2k Thanks for the feedback. I'd considered an egg timer, but was thinking of the old analogue twist-to-set type which would have been a bit clumsy. I'll look for a digital one then.
Errrrrrrr...... what's a 'map' Darbz? What IS this thing of which you speak?? Only jesting, I'm old enough and ugly enough to actually KNOW (and to be able to ask directions from passers - by when in a car!!). Thanks, good stuff.
Haha fr I'm no boomer but I find it funny that people need to be taught basic paper map+compass navigation in Il-2 instead of school. Only unorthodox thing about Il-2 nav is the default keybind for map view is O instead of M.
Darbzy Its popular because as you said most new players struggle with navigation I remember when I first started with cliffs and spent hours flying around with no idea where I was...didnt enjoy the game at that point. Luckily the nav in BoX is much friendlier. Maybe if you lowered the gain on the audio you may be able to clean it up a bit? You dont notice these things over ts etc due to extra background noise/poor audio quality over ts.
Depends on what computer you have. You do need a beefier one to run it, but if it runs well, and you learn to be relatively good at it, it can be quite fun.
3 years later and this video is still helping new players myself included, thank you for this video.
a trick : watch series at Flixzone. Me and my gf have been using it for watching lots of of movies recently.
@Brodie Gus Yup, I have been watching on flixzone} for since december myself :D

Wow learned so much in 1 video. I'll keep watching the other tutorials!
Nice acronyms; a very orderly approach to nav. Thank you!
nice one mate, that mission planner is much better than the one I've been using
CheckSix Yep, it makes things pretty easy. I used to do it all manually!
Thanks Darbzy! Exactly what I was looking for.
Thanks for the info. Was totally clueless about navigation.
No problem, I hope it helped a little.
Well done - was not aware of the flight planner, relied on estimating courses/distances from the map, a little dodgy.
The planner is great for long range bombing - takes the worry out of it.
Hey thanks, trying to get into these flight sims, but I always get lost without playing on easy mode nice to see one for us newbies.
I'm glad you found it helpful. It's all about flying headings accurately using a stop watch!
Thanks for sharing this. I’ll see you on the server mate

I just want to know how to program the map button so I can pull up the map easily . I thought this was for beginners?
‘O’ is the default key, but you can change the button in the ‘settings’ menu.
@@darbz2k I finally figured it out, thank you.
This helped me not going to lie first game I seas lost as hell
When ur in the middle of a dog fight and you bring out a pen and paper and start navigating where younare
Great stuff!
That's great thanks! Very helpful.
Glad it was of some use to you 👍
Nice one Darbz! Thanks mate...
Cheers, I hope it helps
Helped me alot hehe
great work!
Are IAS and GS the same in IL-2?
Usually you have to use your GS to calculate your timing for the legs.
Martin Brehmer No, there is wind in IL2 so the GS and IAS will usually be a little different, but to assume they are the same for simplicity works fine.
Not the same, but you don't fly in hurricanes a lot. Hurricane Mk.2's, perhaps.
I haven't figured out how to open the ingame map. Pls help
