On one fateful night on the South Coast in 1996 Manchester United trailed at halftime to Southampton 3-0. The reason? Sir Alex Ferguson blamed the kit.
But do kit colours really matter? Which kits are the most successful? Which kits are likely to get you relegated? Which kits can save penalties?
    Ben Jacobs finds out.

Sports psychologists at King's College, London have found that Chelsea win 100% of their matches when playing in their third kit. When asked why Chelsea's win percentage is so high in this kit, the researchers explained that Chelsea's opposition are mistaking Chelsea for Crystal Palace. Therefore their defense purposefully stop working because they think Christian Benteke is Chelsea's striker, therefore not needing to break a sweat.

There is a reason all emergency gear is orange or red. It makes it more visible for rescue personell. But as someone who worked for a big uk FC, the most important aspect of the kit is will it sell well. It has to look good for the customer. And merch sales are second only to sponsor and broadcast income in my opinion when it comes to profit margin.
Ps maybe away strips are mostly a way to sell a kit twice or three times these days. And sell to those wanting to be more unique.

In hockey, there was a goalie (Marc-Andre Fleury) who was wearing bright yellow pads and was doing poorly. It was found that the bright yellow pads were actually hindering his performance as players were able to clearly see the equipment. The next year he switched to white pads and went from average goalie to top goalie.

I always find it interesting when teams will refuse a particular color for their away kit because it is too close to a fierce rival. For example Barca will never wear a white kit because that's a color associated with real mad.rid. The Milan clubs as far as I'm aware have never had an away kit that uses the color of their crosstown rival

They've done studies in American football (and other sports) that have shown teams wearing red and black or a combination of the two are more likely to be aggressive, hitting harder and playing stronger, but also more likely to give away fouls/penalties in their respective sports. Something about the combo stirs emotions and gives you that extra zip. It's also worth noting to that the United example in the beginning is true from a playing perspective. With the speed at which the game is played and how athletic players are in closing down or pressuring opponents, you more than likely will not have time to full analyze a situation and deliberately see your teammate when making a pass. You might only get enough time to look at socks, shorts, even the shirt. If the color combos are all too close together, you might hesitate and take that extra second to look more closely for your teammate. This might cost you a yard of space or a passing lane will close if you take too long.

As someone who owned the grey United shirt, I do wonder if it was less the fact it was grey but more to do with the design. It had a really weird pattern at the top and the few times United played in it on the TV footage the top half didn't really jump out on the long shots and almost has a magic eye picture effect to it. I doubt it was causing the level of issue that Fergie claimed to justify changing BUT I can see how with that pattern if you have a quick glance it would be harder to spot the player than it was for Southampton or even if the design had been simpler like in your graphic

Just looking at Germany, Bayern Munich have won the Bundesliga in home kits of, depending on the season, all red, or red and white stripes, or red and royal blue stripes (late 1960s, mid 1990s, mid 2010s), or red with blue sleeves, or all dark blue (1990s). This suggests it's the players wearing the kit rather than the actual colour.
As for Man Uinited's woes with grey, I think I heard once that players themselves (apparently) like primary colours the most for kits.

Wolves do 3rd kits very well. Before third kits were just another random colour, now they have probably pioneered a way to make them commercially valuable and meaningful with the Mexico kit last year and the Portugal one this year.

A theory here. Red is the color that is reflected least by green colored object, if you stare at a green colored object for some time and then stare at a white wall, the wall appears to be slightly red because your eye hasn't seen much red when you look at green colored object and hence become more sensitive to red. Since majority of football field is green, players' eyes become more sensitive to red color and hence they can easily spot their teammates. However, the opponent also benefit from this because they can mark players in red more easily.

What bothers me more is the contemporary trend of jerseys in shocking non-football colors. Why the hell folks destroy club traditions by making their teams play in pink, golden or bright orange? This shit is creeping already into national teams. Czech FA selected bright lime yellow as away kits for Czech national teams. They claim it's "modern look". Fans think the national team looks now like a bunch of road construction workers.

the stat about using home kits away from home could be very deceptive. As you said, teams tend to use their home kits in away matches for derbies and important matches. In other words, that kit is used in more difficult matches, so of course that would lead to a poor record. You're not going to see a particularly bad record for champions league teams wearing their third kit against relegation teams, but you definitely might see a poor record for a club like everton wearing their home kit at anfield.

    • @jacobsben
      @jacobsben 3 роки тому

It's certainly true that due to how certain tough derbies or iconic games fall, home kits will always be worn on the road. I guess that's because nearby teams, who are rivals, tend to choose different and opposing colours. There are exceptions, but as you say Liverpool-Everton and Arsenal-Spurs etc. But Liverpool-Man U, Arsenal-Man U do always require the visitors to change. And third kits specifically aren't just used for easier games. United wore grey at Liverpool and more recently Liverpool used it at Arsenal and Leicester at Chelsea. The 1.0 point average in home kits on the road is well below the expected points (albeit it's a very questionable metric).

Surely the argument for colours being hard to see cancels itself out: hard when you’re attacking but great incognito when defending? You should have your GK in a grey so their ST taking split second shots without time to look up cannot spot your bright orange GK in their periphery.

I remember when Louis Van Gaal was coach of United, one of the seasons we wore black as our third kit, and we didn't win a single game playing in it. I think Liverpool also had a season like that when they wore that awful neon yellow kit. So yes, kit colours definitely matter. Just ask colour blind people

If you want to have any serious analysis on impact of kits you need to do it across many leagues, otherwise it's just biased towards clubs that are strong in that league. For example white may have low win% in the Prem, but look at La Liga with Real having wite home kit and Atletico part white, or Serie A with Juve being part white and AC Milan, Inter, Roma usually having white away kit. I'm pretty sure if averaged across multiple leagues the results would be much much different.

Is this an accurate application of these statistics? Citing the total wins Grey gets out of the total times Grey performs across all teams is miss leading. Some teams may skew Greys performance just bc of their shear quality or lack of. Some teams may have grey traditional as a 2nd kit. Perhaps citing the total wins Grey achieves along side other alternate colors of their respect club?

It's not really "science" as stated multiple times throughout the video, but merely statistics, with many conclusions imperfect due to small sample sizes.
If you want to see if kit colours actually matter, one needs to build a statistical model that gets rid of other variables, like market value of the team, previous performances, player age etc.
