Brooo in Midsommar there's a really scary telephone junpscare that will scare the soul out of you. Literally in beginning of the movie while the girl singing in the background there's a sudden and lound phone ringing and its one of the most effective jump scares iv ever experienced
@SamoaVsEverybody_814 u a brave soul if that didn't creep u the hell out even for a fictional movie, shit I'm about to relive that sceene right now actually 😂😂
Hereditary is a very overrated movie. Not as overrated as the entire Saw franchise, but more so than any other example I can think of in the horror genre lately. I'm not trying to say it's a bad film, it's just that there are plenty of arguably better movies made that have not received their due. What I will give credit to Hereditary for is that it was a great "horror debut" for Ari Aster. It is rare that a first time director is able to make such a successful film considering the lack of advertising done for it. It was one of the few truly good movies that I heard about first through word of mouth, and I wasn't disappointed by it. And it wasn't just some Netflix bullshit. Idk. After reading what I wrote, maybe its not overrated. It was really good. I just preferred some other flicks from the same Era that I think are comparably underrated
Seeing that moment of Bilbo's face freaked me out. I seriously did not expect that from a heart-touching family moment. What is even more screwed up is that I own that action-figure of Bilbo's transfixed face, with the dark eyes and gnarly teeth.
I wouldn't call the scare from "It Follows" a jump scare. He comes walking slowly. Freaky, yes; jump scare, not really. That must have been a slow year for jump scares.
The wardrobe bit in The Conjuring definitely did as it desired....scared the shit out of the majority of us watching it. The Conjuring 2 with Bill yelling "my house!!" is a jumpscare done well too.
There is no better jumpscare (movies or tv shows) than the one from 'Haunting of Hill House' (everyone should know which one). Not only is relevant for the characters but also for the moment between them.
I'm currently showing my friend The Haunting of Hill House for the first time, and the car scene is in the next episode. I'm so excited for her reaction lol.
I was gonna say. You better not forget about Host. The camera flashes at least 5 times before the demon attacked for the scariest jump scare I have ever seen and probably ever will see. I'm so proud that I made it through that with headphones at night. Probably the my most impressive accomplishment lol.
That The Ring moment is on par with other great junpscare moments that dont just scare you but literally paralyze you for a good 2 seconds depending on how scared you get. Cabin fever has the number one spot junpscare without a doubt in my mind. That says something.
@@David_Theisen no, the part where the guy was having that flashback about that super cute white girl he likes In the river, with nice music playing, then ther about to kiss, then all of a sudden It switches to her horrified flesh eaten bloddy face with her eyes looking right at you. That jump scare from the ring was obviously influential besides one of the scares in the new smile movie totally took from it. I even read it in a article. I liked your point about a scare lingering after ppl see it. And gore Verbinski was very clever with the Ring one because he only showed the dead face for like a second so you can’t comprehend it (the days before UA-cam came along and spoiled movies) so you’re still thinking about what you just saw after the screen changes again.
it is a shame they didn't use Sinister for an example. the jump scare in which the Writer goes up to the attic and sees the kids watching a film and then comes the Mr B. that scene gets me every time. also many people are freak out by the tapes. I really liked the list. every movie included is a good example.
The hide and clap scene itself didn't scare me, but hearing a clap on the right to me right after sure did. My cat was on the table and had knocked over the napkin holder, and it made a clapping sound that sounded just like in the movie. She had perfect timing.

That "jump scare sound" or music is called a "musical sting." What a great name for it. That jump scare in "The Descent" was the first time in years, or ever, that caused me, my sister, and my brother-in-law to all jump up from our seats and scream while slopping our drinks everwhere! I've gasped or slightly screamed before possibly, but I don't think I've ever actually "jumped" out of my seat straight up while screaming! All three of us did! Wow, that was a real "JUMP SCARE!"
The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre also had one of the single best jumpscares in cinema history, with Leatherface's first appearance. There's no scare-chord, just a soft, squishy thud as his mallet meets the poor guy's skull.

I guess it's too old to be mentioned here, but I'm going to anyway. One of the best jumpscares in history was in "Jaws". When Brodie and Hooper are investigating Ben Gardner's little fishing trawler, Hooper is looking in a hole torn in the hull, and suddenly Ben Gardner's face appears in the hole, one eye hanging down on his cheek, scaring the crap out of Hooper. GREAT jumpscare! Another older movie, and a crappy movie, but Jack jumping from behind a column and killing Halloran in the Shining was pretty scary. Unnecessary, stupid, and not in the excellent book, but scary.

It’s not effective when you watch at home on Netflix. Sucks for Gen Z. There was no Netflix at the time the movie came out, so it was curated for theatre experience, not streaming. We saw it in theaters and it was so fun and epic
I'm surprised there was no mention of any of the jumpscares from It: Chapter 2 on the list. As someone with trypanophobia (fear of needles), the scene when Eddie ends up in that room with all of those syringes dangling had me jumping out of my seat more than I ever had over a jumpscare scene
Insidious' was really unexpected making it really effective. Usually with jumpscares, there are moment of silence. But there, they were just talking.......
The inferi jump scare in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was good. Anyone who read the books knew it was coming, but the silence, the dark cave atmosphere, and not knowing the exact moment it was going to happen made it even better.
I knew IT would be the 2017 entry. God I hated that movie. I basically hid my eyes in my grandma’s arm or behind my Litten plushie I brought into the theater for comfort. I was also sobbing uncontrollably due to the fear I was feeling. I’m surprised I didn’t run out of the theater.
The Bilbo scene was great, but how did the scene where Frodo is stabbed by the spider monster queen in the third movie not included in this list? I jumped out of my seat on a cinema room when I watched it for the first time
That was a good scene but I think (jumpscare or not but just scarier) when the demon pulls the chick off the bed and drags her. Damn that was crazzzzzy. I went to the movies to see it and the entire crowd got shook up from it.
@@RichFromTheDuece dude, definitely. That scene really disturbed me. I know a lot of people that think it’s corny and laugh at it but for those that it affected, it definitely worked
I watched a video that showed the theatrical ending and the original and while I agree the former was quick and good, I prefer the slower more disturbing latter one
With do respect to the invisible man, I think it’s easier to do jump scares there since he’s invisible. Esp the whole paint or ink over him thing. Been done in other films and cartoons
The scene on Insidious when the guy was walking back and forth on the porch past the window then ends up in the house when he walks back past was a bigger jump scare to me… I jumped and I dont jump for nothing
Cabin In The Woods was 2012, not 2011. Also, ALL the SAW films had jump scares, but as usual, WatchMojo chooses to acknowledge only the first film, because it came first, when discussing Spiral. If you actually watched the SAW films, you would know that, if you weren't so selectively choosing to ignore details, which WatchMojo often does.

One) I saw a real terrifying video of a dad that was playing with his daughter until he encountered a similar problem
Two) I jumped just a little
I wonder if I need to watch Hereditary again because it did not scare me at all.
My favorite to this day is the first zombie bite from 28 WEEKS LATER! I legit jumped in the movie theater!
3:54 It is pretty similar to one of the jump scares in Smile (2022), when they show the beaten up face of the professor
I screamed in theaters three times and I regret seeing The Woman in Black. The sequel on Netflix was decent
Sorry but Mulholland Dr came out in 2001, and it has one of the all time great jump scares
Insidious' was really unexpected making it really effective. Usually with jumpscares, there are moment of silence. But there, they were just talking.......
Luckily, I didn’t see The Descent in theaters but that part got me. I saw it at home
The inferi jump scare in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was good. Anyone who read the books knew it was coming, but the silence, the dark cave atmosphere, and not knowing the exact moment it was going to happen made it even better.
Not seen REC, The House Of The Devil, Crawl, Host and Spiral.
That scene did scare me thanks to the company of James A Janisse on UA-cam
I saw Crawl on TV and a tree didn’t scare me but other scenes did
Ok. Not exactly a jump scare. But the monster swallowing a kids head in a cave scene in ' Deborah Logan ' is the most unsettling & traumatizing
Yes the IT projector scene is one of the best
Got freaking goosebumps at 0:50
I knew IT would be the 2017 entry. God I hated that movie. I basically hid my eyes in my grandma’s arm or behind my Litten plushie I brought into the theater for comfort. I was also sobbing uncontrollably due to the fear I was feeling. I’m surprised I didn’t run out of the theater.
The hide and clap was maybe the 5th best scare in The Conjuring
House of the Devil was so much better than I was expecting.
The Bilbo scene was great, but how did the scene where Frodo is stabbed by the spider monster queen in the third movie not included in this list? I jumped out of my seat on a cinema room when I watched it for the first time
Paranormal Activity should’ve got it for the ending and honestly 2 and 3 have some fantastic jump scares too
That was a good scene but I think (jumpscare or not but just scarier) when the demon pulls the chick off the bed and drags her.
YESS THE DESCENT GETS THE RECOGNITION IT DESERVES
The scene on Insidious when the guy was walking back and forth on the porch past the window then ends up in the house when he walks back past was a bigger jump scare to me… I jumped and I dont jump for nothing
2009: Title Card Jumpscare (Rob Zombie's Halloween II).
Paranormal activity 2 when all the dishes and stuff fell from the cabinet at the same time while the mom was in the kitchen. Man…was that effective.
Yeah, the Crawlers certainly got me.
THE best jump scars ever has to be in Exorcist 3 with the scene in the hospital!
Bilbo traumatized me for like 4 years
What about The Black Phone?
read the title again
I missed Get Out's running man scene
Cabin In The Woods was 2012, not 2011. Also, ALL the SAW films had jump scares, but as usual, WatchMojo chooses to acknowledge only the first film, because it came first, when discussing Spiral. If you actually watched the SAW films, you would know that, if you weren't so selectively choosing to ignore details, which WatchMojo often does.
I also heard there’s a terrifying moment involving a body in Lake Mungo.
