EBay is just a rogue state these days. There is another option which happened to me two years ago - a bidder, really keen like yours, lots of messages etc in the run up to auction end. Turns out he was bidding high to put others off as he himself was selling a similar car and wanted me out of the way so people would bid on his car. I had no come back and eBay wasn’t interested..he even left negative feedback saying “car not as described” even though he never showed up!

I too cannot stop buying these wonderful old cars, fully knowing they will tear me a new one but I do it anyway 😩 Just moved from England to Canada and already have a gorgeous 2006 CL500 coming from California to replace the one I sold in the UK. It’s sure to be ruinous but yet I can’t wait for it to arrive. I’ve found getting much more hands on with the cars with help from UA-cam has keep the cost down considerably. Re the EBay thing, selling is a nightmare between no shows and low offers. Keep up the good work! Push comes to shove I’d probably dump the RR and keep the V12.

I just bought a LS430 vis eBay, and as a buyer I can’t fault it, however I’ve spent the best part of a year trying to buy a V8 remote and the buying experience has been so frustrating with sellers being aloof and ghosting me. I’ve never experienced anything like it, the car I ended up buying was 20 minutes away and we made the deal in person face-to-face, and it seems like that’s sometimes the only way to go?

    Me: yes
    Buyer: ah ok, nevermind.

Tried selling a car on eBay years ago and I certainly wouldn’t do it again. The winning bidder; a gentleman in Nigeria was a very persistent scammer using someone else’s genuine eBay account. He just needed the money sending over for his plane ticket as he could only pay me in gold. Apparently the wife’s Vauxhall Astra was a very sought after car in Lagos and he was shipping it back as a present for his mother.
I just hope his Mother wasn’t disappointed as unfortunately she missed out on the Astra as we part exchanged it, Sorry 😞

For me....use ebay to advertise the car with a fixed price. This helps to reach a bigger audience. Interested parties can come and view it. Of course you will have to deal with the stupid ebay emails from people who are not genuine about buying the car and want a swap for a Toyota camry with 180,000 miles and 500 quid. Dont put it to auction ss there are too many wannabes and scammers and you will end up losing your time, effort and money. I think its a common story you have and many people have experienced this, me included. But I have to admit its an awesome motor and I would love it! I'm off to Silverstone auctions now! eBay has a lot of scammer sellers, so to get over the problem of people not getting what they paid for, etc, eBay gives buyer protection guarantees. It may seem like eBay takes the buyer's side all the time, but it's the nature of the site. The specialist car auction sites confirm identities, addresses, bank details, and have the credit/debit card details of all bidders, etc. There's much more trust in the sellers, the accuracy of the car descriptions, and the bidders. eBay and the specialist car auction sites operate significantly different selling models from each other.

It sounds a little harsh, I know, but remember that it's a commercial transaction - it's up to them to make and fund all logistical arrangements. You're a good guy but in these sorts of circumstances, put your business head on and wait for them to turn up. In the event that they don't, you're just left with a degree of disappointment and frustration but that's the extent of your loss.

There needs to be a system where if the person that wins the auction decides to not actually pay, they at least get charged a fixed amount (even just a fiver or tenner would probably do). I know then the person would probably just refuse to pay that fixed amount. But the way they could do it is so in order to actually make a bid, the amount gets taken out of their account there and then and gets put on hold until the auction is finished. If they don’t win, they get their money back. If they do win auction and actually pay, they get their money back

Stories like this about eBay Car Auctions are commonplace. I have been on ebay for over twenty one years now and on the whole it has been a pleasant experience. Just one of two folks annoyingly failed to complete or deliver. That with over 3,000 transactions and 100% positive feedback..
I have not yet ever listed a complete car. I have sold a few via Facebook Car enthusiast Groups. Often simply mentioning my car had just passed its MoT with a picture to have one or two folks show an interest to let them know if I ever decide to sell.
I plan to list one of my MGs using the eBay Classified option rather than an auction early in the New Year when Christmas expenses are a fading memory. Things like that make a difference. The car is worth only about £3000 but is a nice example and drives surprisingly well. Finally, not familiar with eBay charges or costs for car auctions or classified for sale listings. How do they work and what charges apply will help me decide best option?

List the car with “Buy it Now” and $500 non refundable deposit if they don’t come within 3 days. If they don’t come, you keep the $500.

Would be glad to buy it myself, it's actually a really cool car and for the price you get so much (sure, if you're ok with the high running cost), it's a shame I'm not in the UK, well maybe not for my bank account.

I wouldn't sell anything of value on ebay. Not as an auction anyway. Ebay care about only one thing. Ebay. If I were to sell a car on ebay, it would be as a classified, setting the price a little above what I really wanted, and invite people to come and view and make 'sensible' offers. Then select the best offer, which is not just about price, but also about whether the buyer is worthy and/or is likely to pay without messing and won't stalk you if the car later goes wrong. It is also really good fun seeing how imaginative people can be in phrasing an absurdly low offer, e.g 'I'll take it off your hands for £500 pounds mate, cash'. I mean if you offer something derisory often enough, eventually someone will accept, right?

Car looks beautiful! I'm sure someone will love it. I would normally be interested myself, but it's just the wrong time, as is often the way.
I can't even muster a smile at what happened on eBay. It's simply not funny.
I have actually not followed through myself on one occasion. Buyer's remorse happens. What can I say? Other than, I paid the buyer's premium, which was more than 800 quid, offered profuse apologies, and felt really really bad, not least because the seller is at best back where he started, but with a sour taste. And maybe he'd already spent the money or was otherwise desperate for it?
However, I understand the temptation when you've been watching an auction for a car that's desirable and rare to place a bid at the last minute for fear of losing out. I did and immediately knew I'd done the wrong thing for me, a very ill-considered thing, and had created unnecessary hassles and stresses for all involved parties.
And I admit that I've had the temptation to bid a few times since.
I suspect buyer's remorse is happening more and more, as selling cars by auction has become more and more a thing during Covid, with new auction sites being launched, and a seemingly never-ending number of tempting cars being offered every single day.
When it was basically eBay, trade auctions, and a big specialist auction every now and then it was rather different.
Now there are specialist auction sites with continuous auctions and emails being sent out by some not just daily but multiple times a day.
It's quite different than searching for a specific something on eBay, or checking out the odd specialist auction. If you are looking for something specific, you end up scanning everything.
Lastly, while the auction house will sue for their fee/buyer's premium, ie, their losses, in the event of a buyer not completing a sale, the seller is not covered for anything else. The idea is that bidders will not want to potentially lose hundreds or thousands of pounds by bidding without an intention to complete a sale. From the seller's point of view, there is no guarantee that a sale will be completed, but there is much less likelihood of being left with any hassles over the auctioneer's fees. For sure, a winning bidder can't get away with just walking away, as is seemingly the case with eBay.

Sounds like the same guy I had on my Mercedes SL . Guy was from Edinburgh . I wasted a whole week negotiating with him . Said he had booked a flight so I didn’t bother with a deposit and turned down another buyer. Moral always get a deposit!,,

Only sold one car on ebay. A mk3 mondeo that was for spares. The amount of idiots that contacted me was ridiculous. People offering swaps for phones and ipads. Just stupid. Luckily a legit buyer bought but not sure id go down that route again if I were selling a half decent car.

With large purchases ebay should have a account checking facility to ensure buyers have the funds and not just bidding because they have a hard on

I'm wondering whether drink (or worse) at the "buyers" elbow whilst on their keyboard might have coloured their judgement and they later realised that they'd been really very silly to bid. It would take a superhuman effort to 'fess up to that scenario. Just putting this forward as a possibility. Loved the video by the way, now subscribed.

Put a car up for sale a couple of weeks ago, had someone turn up and say they’ll get back to me… 6 hours later - a text: “Sorry, won’t be buying the car as we need a 7 seater”…
Why did you come to look at a car with just 5 seats then 😂😂
It’s a pain but it means you have an excuse to have it a little longer 😁

Unlucky for that Joel, hopefully second time lucky. Or is it a sign to keep it?!! ;) eBay is fine to sell a car on btw, as long as you do a classified advert you can't get messed about so much as no one is bidding.

Not surprised at your experience TBH , I used to buy off eBay occasionally and got stung a couple of times with electricals , the returns is a nightmare , now I won't use eBay at all for anything over a tenner and that's if I can't find it locally. I only use eBay as a reference point now for bigger items like cars and motorbikes , find the website from it and go from there , bypass eBay and their BS system . Good luck with the sale , I fear that lovely BMW 760 has limited appeal though .

Ebay seriously needs to look at giving sellers more rights especially with vehicles, and I agree if the buyer is fraudulant ebay should pay at least a percentage of the sale price, at the moment Ebay wins whatever happens and they need to take responsibility for fraud on their site.
