Hey everyone! Trying a different style of video this week, whilst I still work on acquiring a new car for the channel. Let me know what you think & if you enjoy I’d appreciate if you give the video a thumbs up! Thanks all, see you soon!
Love this new video, always makes my day when you upload! Consistent quality videos, doesn't matter what genre I'll still watch them! some great cars here, but i'm still going for the 3.0 Z4 in december when I get my no-claims (thanks to you :P )
I’ve owned a Passat Cc GT TDi 170 for 6 years and 65k miles. Now 12 years old and 136k on the clock. Paid £8.5k 6 years ago. Suffered major depreciation but been fantastic in my ownership. Highly recommend one. I do long commutes and get just shy of 1000 miles per tank average 65mpg which isn’t bad. It’s not a drivers car but for long motorway stints is very comfortable. I put 25 mm eibach springs on with the standard DCC dampers.
Own XFS portfolio 2012 face-lift, 175k, drives like a 30k mile car. The B and W 1200w audio probably cost more than the car is worth now. The face-lift with the 8 speed is a big step up from the bug eye pre 2012. The XFS is 0/60 5.9s and 40 mpg overall.
agree, my dad has one.. still stands up well today i think, bit of a heavy car but it's just how it is... dated satnav screen can be upgraded to apple carplay fairly easily now if needed.
Speaking from personal experience, DO NOT, under any circumstance, get the Jaguar XF with 2.7 or 3.0 diesel (same engine that lives in the Landrover). They are notorious for snapping the crankshaft and it can literally happen out of the blue. They usually have a lifespan of about 200K - 250K kilometers. And if you're lucky and don't brick the block, the repair for this requires complete removal of the engine and nearly full disassembly, which will cost you just about 2/3 of the current market price of the car. And if you bricked the engine, good luck finding a replacement, which costs just about as much as the car itself and will also need rebuilding to avoid the same thing some time down the line (probably soon). I just bought one, it was butter smooth, quiet, no discernible noises or warnings, no leaks, nothing. Managed to drive it for a few hundred miles and then at a rapid pace over the span of 24 hours it developed a misfire-like shake and shortly after this (in 10 minutes of runtime, while diagnosing the issue) shaft bearings started making noise and the engine began shaking fairly violently, only at which point the OBC started flashing oil pressure warnings. It literally went from perfect to complete catastrophe in a flash. The XF is only worth with the petrol engines as they are far more sturdy. Otherwise, walk around it with a wide arc and don't even look at it.
We own a Jaguar XF 3.0 diesel and a BMW 430d Msport, the jaguar is so much more comfortable handles just as well and almost as fast. I'd certainly recommend one.
I was lucky enough to own a Jaguar XF 3 litre diesel as a company car and it was absolutely fantastic not only to drive but what a looker inside and out! I always used to look forward to driving it. And being careful 55 mpg was quite easy to achieve
Great video - thanks. Best XC90 is the 185HP D5 rather than the 163HP, earlier version - this has a 0-60 time of 10.6 seconds rather than 12 making it a bit quicker, but they are surprisingly torquey, so getting up to speed is smooth and surprisingly quick. A throbby 5 cylinder engine sounds less like a diesel than many diesels but not everyone likes the sound it makes. On a run, my trip computer reads 37 to 40mpg which isn't bad at all for a 2.1 tonne vehicle from this era. They also go on - examples with close to 200,000 miles are not uncommon.
@@robsshedoftech6457 nah its a 62plate r design 200bhp as standard but looking to do a remap apparently they become really good fun. surprisingly it handles really well and really comfy on a long journey I would love a newer on but they have gotten really really stupid expensive but would deffo recommend an xc90 to anyone
These cars are affordable to buy. But it doesn't mean that they are affordable to own Most of the five you have reviewed don't have the best reliability record and when something does go wrong it could easily cost more to put right than the original £5k price. You should have said proceed with caution!
Again, a superbly spoken video, very well delivered, Joel, you should consider presenting on on of the mainstream TV channels. Perfectly spoken Queen’s English ! A real pleasure to hear you present and so smart and mature, of a intelligent man. Thank you 🙏🏻
Hey Joel, love the video and we agree with your takes on these cars - some absolute gems on this list! Thank you for the shout out, and we look forward to your next video 😁
I have a XF-S 3.0d, i love it to bits and i did pay a bit more than 5k for mine but it is what it is, currently only lookimg to change it to either a XFR or a E63 amg otherwise i wont part with the jag
We’ve got two Jag XF’s. Save £100 a month for up keep as they are expensive to run let alone fix. That said a local independent specialist will look after you well. We have a 3.0d and a 4.2 NA V8. We get the economy for family holidays with the diesel and we get the great soundtrack with the petrol. They drive beautifully and have all the comfort you’ll ever need. Loads of space for a family car. Going to have the exhaust modded on the V8 to make it louder but not V12 BMW loud 😉.
Great video Joel. I said on another video that I hope you back yourself with your new cars, buy cheap and fix them up and you’ll make great content - it’s what we all want to see.
Great video Joel! 🙂 I have a 2011 XF with the relatively rare 5 litre naturally aspirated V8 and it is a fantastic car. It can get almost 35mpg as a trip average over a long journey (the 5L is better on fuel than the 4.2 as it is a much more modern engine). It is super comfy as a GT car, plus it is nowhere near as unreliable as people say. The only issue I have had with mine in the last 10 months was 1 broken window regulator. If you can find a well cared for example with a good history they are fantastic value for money.
A beast of a car you have there. Sadly I had the most bitter of lemons in my Portfolio. £10k+ worth of warranty repairs before the engine went bang three months out of warranty (2.7d). FJSH. JLR were so difficult to deal with with regards to a new engine/turbos that I ended up just leaving it in Haliwell Jones and eventually received scrap value for it. That’s how much I despised that car. I’d love a Discovery Sport, and may buy an early one with the Ford diesel, but am already hearing of the new JLR diesels going bang. Jaguar are blaming the drivers for their driving style and even refusing to fix warranty breaks as owners are not reaching the mileage that they claimed they would do, at the time of purchase. How there isn’t a huge and public lawsuit against JLR is beyond me. Such a shame as mine was a beautiful car that I intended to, and tried to, keep for many years.
@@BionicRusty Oh dear! Sorry to hear about all the issues you had. It sounds like the diesels have real issues. Fingers crossed my V8 does not go bang 🙂
So many cars, handicapped by non ULEZ compliance and/or current fuel prices will throw up some massive bargains. If you can sit tight with one until fuel prices stabilises (we hope) and don’t care about entering cities you may be very well placed.
I enjoy this style of vid, its easy to watch. If you do more lists id try and go for mor quirky as opposed to the standard cheapest, fastest, most economical but all on a budget. Maybe do a list of things like the most advanced tech in cars no longer in production... probably need a snappier title though - i know the 2006 s class had great night vision
I have had a Phaeton MK 2 since 2014 it has been great car until air suspension went and then egr /dpf issues the emulator software doesn't do resets so if there are issues expect a world of pain. Lovely to drive though
Yes, I'd go for the Merc. Already it is much harder to get one of these for under 5k than a year or two ago, and do your homework, because a troublesome car could easily end up costing you another 5k!
I ordered the Sport wagon in Antarctic blue. When I got there the guy said it 'didn't come in' and instead offered me the family Truckster in metallic pea. I was unsure, but he said: "If you think you hate it now, just wait till you drive it!"
Better looking estate car? CLS Shooting Brake - got my 2013 350CDI with 78K for £8950 (little outside the price bracket here - most expensive car I ever bought but still cheap as chips) It replaced a 2007 A6 Avant - not a bad looking car in itself (in it's day) - but looks a little flabby by todays Audi's standards)
Owned a 159 SW for two years and 25k miles. It was an early 1.9jtdm. Fantastic styling and best handling FWD car I’ve had. Really nice to drive. However engine economy was poor vs other diesels and suffered from lots of electrical faults. Went back to VAG products after dipping in to an Alfa as simply didn’t have the time or funds to keep pouring in to it.
I might also add the Volvo S80? I picked up an S80 3.2 automatic with active suspension, heated and air conditioned electric leather seats, great sound system etc. for less than £3500.00 with less than 80K on the clock. Been running it for 3 years now will only minor things needed (wear and tear). Lovely sound to the engine, goes really well but still does just under 40mpg at motorway speeds.
12 months ago i got a 2011 xfs Portfolio for £4800 BLACK ON BLACK on black 20" volans 3.0d 130 000 FJSH had full major service and cambelt at 125 000 with full eco tune and dpf delete its now 340bhp and 40-50 mpg and 0-62 -n 5.4 sec just had mot 2 days ago with no advisory's my first jag and i love it

So I am finally buying my first car at the age of 40. And since it has taken me so long to get a car, I've decided to go used so that I can get something special rather than an econobox or entry level BMW/Audi. I am looking at: Jaguar XJR (classic style with old school round lights) Jaguar XKR (Mk 1 or 2) Jaguar S-Stype R BMW Z4 3.0si Coupe BMW 540i (e39) Audi S5 4.2V8 Audi A7 3.0t petrol VW Scirroco GTI equivalent or R Any advice or suggestions?
This is a great video for people trying to find work as an airport car driver. (Just a personal plate and you have a limousine! 👍) thank you for sharing.
I think describing a 4.2 litre V8 having the potential of travelling 35miles on a gallon of petrol might be scientifically possible but a daily average of 18-20 is a more realistic piece of advice…
I have a 2014 XF with the 2.2 diesel, whilst the engine is a little agricultural, it’s a nice drive, very comfortable, I would advise anyone looking to try go for higher specs if possible as there are some nice options like, heated steering wheel, heated and cooled seats, adaptive cruise control, etc. I have now just passed 150,000 miles and the only issues I have had have been small problems, mostly with door locks, but all were cheap to fix. Would highly recommend.
It's funny how similar your taste is to mine. My first car a few years ago was an e85 z4 Roadster. Then it was the first time I watched some of your videos. Currently I am looking forward to buy a Nissan 370z, and again I watched your video about the 370Z and it was amazing. Now I am looking this video, and currently I am driving an Alfa Romeo 159 sedan! You got a very nice taste! :)
My son drive the Jaguar XF 3 litre S and it’s beautiful, quick and sounds quiet 🤫 yes I said quiet! Not what I expected from Jag, thought it would burble but no.
Hmmm, is it me or did you forget to mention the pretty cool V8 that was available in the XC90? I was driving and listening to this video, so maybe I missed it.
Spot On info on the XF... FYI the N/A 4.2 V8 is one of the rarest XFs in the UK with only 205 ever registered in the short 2 year production life and about 160 currently on the road, one of them being my 1 owner from new 4.2 V8 XF 👌 and yes driven very gingerly you can eek out 35 MPG out of it but eventually it drops to around 28 MPG on mixed driving cycle which is still very impressive for such a large Luxo- Barge 👌 Driving into London it naturally drops to low 20's but what a way to Waft about our Capital 😎 I love it and it's super smooth & very reliable 4.2 V8 👍
6:30 RE: XC90's, there are various versions of the D5 engine with more power. You absolutely do *not* want a 2.9 T6 as the gearbox is guaranteed to fail, if it hasn't already.
The Mercedes SL is one of the greatest cars…when working. When its not working, mainly the suspension, you will need to have a budget of at least 1-2k a year to maintain it that is if you don’t need to fix the car when you first buy it
They’re only expensive to maintain if previous owners were lazy/stupid/poor. The competent motorist practices preventative maintenance and replaces components before they fail, ensuring no surprise failures or big bills.
Joel, keep in mind that apart from your country, in mainland Europe prices are 3 to 4 times more than those you mentioned. Try and find an SL 500 for less than 20k €...
Volvo XC90 T6 has one of the worst gearboxes, steer clear. On the 159 the 1.9 jtdm manual also suffered from a bad gearbox with the 5th and 6th gearbox bearings going often. Otherwise a great car. I own both (XC90 D5 and 159 1.9 jtdm) Currently looking for a Porsche 944 that can also be had for under 5k
Phaeton over 600 for the tax, God knows how much the insurance would be!!! And if it fails ouch on the pocket!!! Gorgeous alfa 👍👍👍 love the JAG not sure about the rest....... great content 👍👍👍
I made a purchase in August to which everyone told me not to!! I purchased a 2005 (55) bmw x5 3.0d sport in black, what an amazing purchase, very well spec'd , completely untouched and original apart from the android head unit, £3995 I paid and that's with 135k!
Joel another great video as always, I'm looking forward to seeing what car you decide to purchase ( hopefully soon ) would love your opinion on an audi tt as I reckon they are on the way up in value also such as the SL
I would only recommend buying an old Phaeton to someone I really hate. You will end up spending multiples of that “bargain purchase price” to keep it on the road.
I think a good one you’ve missed off this list is a Audi b8 s line saloon or avant. Lovely cars for under 5k. Especially if you can find a 3.0 v6 tdi. 2.0 tdi will get you 50mpg on a run and loads of lovely extras like tint wing mirrors and rear view!
Have to agree, looked at B8 audi after owning a C5 A6 and bought a Passat CC in the end. B8 A4s are just underwhelming and overpriced but then again A4s always have been.
Five grand for a 2010 Jaguar XF! Jeez, in France you'll be paying over 13k for one that age. Take a look at leboncoin if you want a shock on the price of used cars there!
It's all well and good buying an old luxury car for cheap. However the servicing and spare parts aren't all that cheap, so if it's not been well maintained it can be a money pit.
It’s amazing how cheap the SL is now. I remember my father having one in about 2003/4. Wonderful cars, but water kept getting into the boot and damaging the electrical boxes, my father got annoyed and sold it.
A well considered bunch that's for sure however i would avoid the Phaeton and do especial due diligence if you want the Merc. If you want similar save a few more pennies and get a Lexus IS 250.
i mean yeah of course >£50,000 cars which are 20 years old are gonna be under 5k. the problem is they would have many miles and many parts that need replacing
Biggest problem with these cars???? If and when they go wrong the repair bills will be more than the car is worth. I bought a Focus a few years ago, fine until it went for it's MOT and needed rear brake pipes - - - the fuel tank had to be removed which was all labour, then we got onto the actual brake work. If it was the front pipes, £50 plus MOT, back ones £200 + parts + MOT, and that was a small repair. If a Range Rover goes wrong - - - scrap it
You say Chelsea is more exciting than Arsenal ( you must be high 🍁🥴 ) anyway I'm working in VW dealership and must say Photon is amazing & there's a V6 & V8
Excellent concept of video. Truly appreciate. I'd suggest you to give us your insight on bargains on the bigger hatchbacks (like Focus, Mazda 3, Golf ) category. It is the type of car I'm more interested in because you can have a bit of everything on them. Keep up the good work you're doing. Top marks

So I am finally buying my first car at the age of 40. And since it has taken me so long to get a car, I've decided to go used so that I can get something special rather than an econobox or entry level BMW/Audi.
I am looking at:
Jaguar XJR (classic style with old school round lights)
Jaguar XKR (Mk 1 or 2)
Jaguar S-Stype R
BMW Z4 3.0si Coupe
BMW 540i (e39)
Audi S5 4.2V8
Audi A7 3.0t petrol
VW Scirroco GTI equivalent or R
Any advice or suggestions?
I didn't expect to see most of these cars :o Learned something new 😎🥳
Awesome! Thanks as always for watching my friend
Hey Joel. Arsenal are at the top of the league.
This is a great video for people trying to find work as an airport car driver. (Just a personal plate and you have a limousine! 👍) thank you for sharing.
Alfa Romeo - beautiful interior! (Worth buying just for that!)😊
I think describing a 4.2 litre V8 having the potential of travelling 35miles on a gallon of petrol might be scientifically possible but a daily average of 18-20 is a more realistic piece of advice…
I have an alfa 159 (saloon though) Myself, got to agree brilliant cars
My son drive the Jaguar XF 3 litre S and it’s beautiful, quick and sounds quiet 🤫 yes I said quiet! Not what I expected from Jag, thought it would burble but no.
My XF 4.2 V8 likes to burble and growl quite a bit 👌like a proper big cat should 😉
Hmmm, is it me or did you forget to mention the pretty cool V8 that was available in the XC90?
Wow, I didn’t know they were that rare! Definitely worth having one if you can find one then…
Feel v lucky to also have the 4.2V8. Lovely car and great sound track
Never actually knew this! Nice old relaxed 4.2 with 296 bhp
@@cannonball9478 ... 👌😎👍
@@LA63003 ... Nice & relaxed when you want it to be 👌 but goes like a "Scalded Cat" (pun intended) 😉 when you ask it to with a pleasant growl 👍
6:30 RE: XC90's, there are various versions of the D5 engine with more power. You absolutely do *not* want a 2.9 T6 as the gearbox is guaranteed to fail, if it hasn't already.
Better looking estate car? I'd say the Arteon shooting brake is a very good looking estate but I doubt you will see one of them for 5k any time soon.
Jaguar XF sportbrake.
Volvo XC90 T6 has one of the worst gearboxes, steer clear.
On the 159 the 1.9 jtdm manual also suffered from a bad gearbox with the 5th and 6th gearbox bearings going often. Otherwise a great car.
I own both (XC90 D5 and 159 1.9 jtdm)
Currently looking for a Porsche 944 that can also be had for under 5k
Hands down the 159 sportwagon is the sexiest estate. I do like the XF sportbrake though.
Phaeton over 600 for the tax, God knows how much the insurance would be!!! And if it fails ouch on the pocket!!! Gorgeous alfa 👍👍👍 love the JAG not sure about the rest....... great content 👍👍👍
I'm always quite surprised seeing old Jag XFs. They usually look fairly pristine - looking far more solid than other cars of the same vintage.
I made a purchase in August to which everyone told me not to!! I purchased a 2005 (55) bmw x5 3.0d sport in black, what an amazing purchase, very well spec'd , completely untouched and original apart from the android head unit, £3995 I paid and that's with 135k!
Great video Joel! And I think I will move to the UK, cars are so cheap over there compared to the Netherlands😂
The XC90 has aged really well
Great video Joel.
Only estate cars currently on sale that are as good looking as an Alfa 159 are the Peugeot 508 SW and the Volvo V90/V60
C'mon Phil, you on the bong lad ?
Joel another great video as always, I'm looking forward to seeing what car you decide to purchase ( hopefully soon ) would love your opinion on an audi tt as I reckon they are on the way up in value also such as the SL
I would only recommend buying an old Phaeton to someone I really hate. You will end up spending multiples of that “bargain purchase price” to keep it on the road.
Do a rare vag cars video like old mk4 anniversary gti diesels audi s6’s with v10 and s4 with a v8 passat w8 etc but also why you wouldn’t want them
Great post
Alfa is stunning and I suspect the diesel engine is a reliable Fiat block. I'd take the jaguar however I wish I could get an XE 2.0 for 5k.
You can get a x type for much less and personal I’d say they look nicer and they’re fairly reliable being a ford mondeo underneath
I'd get the 159 out of these cars. It's Even more fun to drive than the Mercedes SL.
Bland as a brussel sprout!
Take a look at leboncoin if you want a shock on the price of used cars there!
l can't believe you left the Z4 of the list Joel 😢
It's all well and good buying an old luxury car for cheap. However the servicing and spare parts aren't all that cheap, so if it's not been well maintained it can be a money pit.
That's why you go for the £5k ones instead of the £2k ones! Always buy the best you can afford on these. Poor ones cost many times the purchase price!
the d5 is 185hp from 07 and the last MY of the mk1 was 200hp, but still a bit slow
It’s amazing how cheap the SL is now. I remember my father having one in about 2003/4. Wonderful cars, but water kept getting into the boot and damaging the electrical boxes, my father got annoyed and sold it.
My brother used to have a xf real nice car
that alfa ticks my boxes, i would be over the moon to have that in auto. that is a sweet car, i think i may look for one!.
You forgot the E46 330i Sport Touring Manual
It’s a great car, I wouldn’t say it’s overlooked though
@@itsjoel fair enough, I’ve got one at the moment after an m140i and I’m in love with it
A well considered bunch that's for sure however i would avoid the Phaeton and do especial due
diligence if you want the Merc. If you want similar save a few more pennies and get a Lexus IS 250.
Lexus is a great shout
Is that the same as footage?
Title should have been "5 cars that will cost you more to own than buy"
So Joel, are you going for one of these?
I’m very tempted by a Phaeton
i mean yeah of course >£50,000 cars which are 20 years old are gonna be under 5k. the problem is they would have many miles and many parts that need replacing
You wouldn't find these in Australia for under £5000 (or equivalent $AUD).
Last one was a gem
Top marks
SL cost atleast like 20 000 euros here. Just bought 90-s CLK tho, very nice car.
Wow that’s crazy!
The Alfa is a beautiful car but in my opinion there is a better looking wagon. The E46 3 Series with the M package.
The Chelsea Arsenal analogy isn't aging well 🙈🤣
Really enjoyed this summary! That Alfa estate is quite the looker - subscribed
I had a XF SV8 from 08 - 12. I never ever saw anything like 35mpg. But that may have been due to enjoying it too much.......
how about a video of cheapest to run cars under 3 grand ?
I'd give a JLR V6 diesel a wide berth. Google is your friend here.
