All Alone in Yosemite: The El Capitan Traverse

  • Yosemite National Park is one of our favorite hiking destinations in the entire world. While hiking in Yosemite is quite popular in the warm summer months, winter in Yosemite is something truly magical. On this particular warm winter day in Yosemite, we set out to blaze our own trail through the snow on a route no hiker had yet attempted all winter: the Yosemite Falls to El Capitan traverse. The normal hike to Yosemite Falls is absolutely glorious any time of year, but we were up for a challenge and so from the falls we opted to continue onward another 3 miles to Eagle Peak, which offers some of the best views of Yosemite Valley in the whole park! From Eagle Peak we threw on the snowshoes and fought our way through the slushy snow all the way to the summit of El Capitan. Wow - Yosemite, hiking, snowshoeing, insane views, and no one else around? This traverse turned out to be everything a hiker dreams of and more!

    This video really brought back memories, because I did the hike to Eagle Peak about 30 years ago. I don't know why that peak isn't talked about more. The thing I remember most, other than the incomparable view from the top, is rounding a bend and suddenly upper Yosemite Falls comes into view, and when that happened in your video, and you both were crying "Oh my God", I know exactly what that felt like! It's an unexpected revelation of glory and grandeur that is so overwhelming, the feelings can't be contained. I will never forget that. Those kinds of moments happen all the time in the Sierras, but this particular one is so powerful. I remember a feeling of almost not being able to stand. Be safe!

      Yes David! You describe that moment beautifully, and that is exactly how it felt for us too. Literally the best thing about having this channel is getting to share experiences like that with others who know and love them. It's so wonderful that our Eagle Peak trips were separated by 30 years, yet we had the same feelings and can connect over it as though we were on the exact same trip. Thanks so much for sharing that memory -- it totally made our day! ❤️

      Haha yes Tom! You are absolutely going to love this hike, and definitely you have to do the offshoot up to Eagle Peak. As great as the views from El Cap are, the views from Eagle are even better -- probably the best in the whole park. Can't wait to hear how you like it! ❤️

    Great hike way to hang in there, so beautiful ! Thanks for sharing, oh, I hate to tell Adam, he missed the two best snack stops on that hike, one, 2/3 the way up the Rock face is a ledge that goes out onto the face, look for a trail that goes over to the ledge, there uses to be a rock with a window as a located, look at a photo of the falls you can see the ledge with a lone pine tree, the second starts at the top of the falls goes down the face this has a railing. It's worth going back for both, thanks Larry Owens

    ELISE and ADAM a hello from France. Superb video, Yosemite National Park remains the most beautiful and mythical on the planet, its peculiar rocks and waterfalls seem to come straight out of prehistory. I also noticed the beautiful bird flying over ELISE, it's not the first time, and it's probably a sign of benevolence from nature. The beauty of the landscapes, the voice and songs of ELISE, sometimes the suffering, then the joy, this video is very rich in emotions. ADAM, in France in the "Looney Tunes" we have "Yosemite Sam" he is the opponent of Bugs Bunny, I know that like me you like cartoons. Let's not forget Beep Beep ! Kisses to both of you. DAN
    ELISE et ADAM un bonjour de France. Superbe vidéo, le parc national Yosemite reste le plus beau et le plus mythique de la planète, ses roches particulières et ses cascades semblent sortir tout droit de la préhistoire. J’ai aussi remarqué le superbe oiseau qui survole ELISE, ce n’est pas la première fois, et c’est sans doute un signe de bienveillance lancé par la nature. La beauté des paysages, la voix et les chansons d’ELISE, parfois la souffrance, puis la joie, cette vidéo est très riche en émotions. ADAM, en France dans les « Looney Tunes » nous avons « Yosemite Sam » il est l’adversaire de Bugs Bunny, je sais que comme moi tu apprécies les cartoons. N’oublions pas Bip Bip ! Bises à vous deux. I have done this traverse and stood on El Cap - though with a little bit less snow. Yosemite is one of my favorite places on earth - and early spring is the best time of year. The weather is still cool, there's still snow, but the winter ski crowds are gone and the summer crowds have not yet arrived. It has always felt to me a little bit closer to perfection.

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  2 місяці тому

      Totally agree. No crowds, waterfalls flowing, it's our favorite time as well. As long as people are prepared for some snow and ice at higher elevations, it's really the perfect time to visit! ❤️

    Great video!
    I have so many fond memories of Yosemite as well as the Eastern Sierra where my Dad took me many times growing up in the 70s. So thanks thanks for letting come along and experience this adventure vicariously with you both.
    One correction, the tree you posed next to was either a Jeffery or Ponderosa Pine (not a redwood or sequoia). I am betting on a Jeffery due to the location, but the smooth pine cone compared to the spikey one if the Ponderosa would tell for sure. Also, the Jeffery has a much stronger vanilla smell in between the bark (which my Dad shared with me and I llater shared with my kids)

    Wow, great views! I hiked Vernal Fall and Nevada Fall years ago and hiked down the John Muir Trail. This is when I decided to purchase Trekking Poles when I got home. My legs hurt so bad going down! I went hiking yesterday and it was a long hike for me. No going uphill like you two but I'm feeling it today. Even my shoulders yesterday were getting sore from hitting the ground so much with my poles. I got a big scratch on my leg because I was in shorts and the trail was a little overgrown in spots with sharp vines. I'm starting to slow down a little at 66 years old and I'm going to start doing some smaller hikes. My mind wants to do it but my body says "No Way!" Good luck you two and I get nervous watching you two cross Water Falls and so close to those high cliff edges! Be careful! We want you both to be around for a long time!

    Did upper falls in the winter last year. It was gorgeous, but on the way down, a chunk of ice broke off the upper switchbacks, the size of a Highlander. Sounded like an avalanche, I looked up and just saw a giant cloud over my head. The 15ft ice chunk fell mere ft away from me. The most scared I’ve ever been in my life. 😅
    That being said, that exact spot was also my snack spot! 😂

      Wow that is so freaking scary! It really is one of the dangers of winter travel. Everyone knows about avalanches, but people rarely think about ice fall or collapsing seracs, yet that is just as dangerous. Would love to do Angels in the snow, though it's so low altitude that there's often not much opportunity to do it before the snow melts. Will def get it done at some point though! ❤️

      Thanks Dan! Happy to share this adventure with you, and you def need to do some Yosemite exploring -- so many spectacular hikes and trail runs there. We were trying to figure out why Yosemite didn't get as blitzed by the blizzards as so much of the eastern Sierra, and decided it was probably mostly due to altitude. Yosemite is all below 10k, and the higher mountains really seemed to catch the bulk of the big snows this time. Not sure why exactly that is, but it seems to be the case! ❤️

      Serge we were so surprised there was no one else there! We did see people on our way back down from Yosemite falls so we were alone on that part just because we started early. But I think the rest of the hike is honestly just too hard for most people -- breaking trail through the snow is really tough (I was exhausted and I got to follow in Adam's steps, so imagine how hard it must have been for him!), so I think everyone just waits for the snow to melt before trying to go to El Cap. ❤️ --E

      Thanks John! That is so great to hear about the music -- really delighted you're enjoying it! We literally just did a members video on our music process last week. The problem with doing it on the main channel is that not everyone is interested in it, so it will have a relatively low click-through rate and then YT won't show it to anyone -- even subscribers. It's very frustrating that the algorithm works that way now. Yosemite's beauty never gets old! Your video brought back memories of my visit to Horsetail Fall (for the firefall) last month. Have you guys seen the fireball? By the way, thanks for sharing the spectacular views! It's inspiring me to explore more. Have you two considered hiking in the Canadian Rockies or Glacier National Park in the future?

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  2 місяці тому

      Yes Robert! Awesome you got to see the firefall. Yes we have seen it -- by accident actually, we were just there adventuring and it was going on. Which isn't too surprising because we're there pretty often. We have been to Glacier and love it. Will hopefully go back and make a video or two there -- and maybe in Canadian Rockies too! -- this summer. So glad you're inspired to explore -- it's the best thing ever! ❤️

      Haha that was for sure an all-time snack spot. The panorama was so eyeball-scorching that I wasn't actually even thinking about the drop -- just blown away by the fact that I could see Yosemite Falls, Clouds Rest, Half Dome and Nevada Falls all at once. Crazy! ❤️

    Awesome hike for sure thanks for posting.....
    ...... If you're not an experienced hiker I would not recommend this trail..... Especially in June July and August temperatures can reach well over 100 degrees...... And you don't have to look too far for the crowds just go back down to the valley.... So crowded most of the year.... Regardless of temperature or which month it is.... With December and January probably being the less crowded months....... I began hiking in Yosemite over 30 years ago...... It was so peaceful and quiet then nowadays the bus loads of people in the tourist overwhelm our forest..... The crowds in the valley and campgrounds have changed the face of Yosemite for sure

      Thanks very much -- how cool that you've been hiking there for over 30 years! Wow you must have seen a lot of changes. Yes, in our experience the last few years winter and early spring are definitely the best times to go as long as people are prepared for snow and ice -- so wonderful to be all alone in these beautiful places! ❤️

    When you go to Tioga after gas station there is a water tank tower off road. It has a 9 foot suger pine stump. Cut down for tank. 9 feet. North Dome looks so round from up there.

    Epic trek. The other direction is probably better for general hiker. Epic drop going right instead of left.
    If you walk down some where they stopped at falls you can see bowl above lower falls.

    So fun! When was this hike? I was thinking there would be more snow. Did you make it back before dark? Love you guys.

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  2 місяці тому

      Mid-March, Bob -- there actually was a lot of snow on top, but it had had enough days of melting and re-freezing that it left a nice crust so it didn't feel too deep except for when we broke through. We made it back just as it got dark, so perfect timing! ❤️
