- Premier Li Keqiang shrugs off "growing pains",says relationship is based on equality and mutual benefit. Adrian Finighan speaks to Victor Gao, director of the China National Association of International Studies; Joseph Onjala, a senior research fellow at the Institute for Development Studies at the University of Nairobi; and James Schneider, editor of Think Africa Press.
Hahahahahaha. I'm Eritrean and have witnessed the conduct of the Chinese people coming to my homeland over the course of many years. They are very cordial and respectful. Are there the occasional bad eggs? Of course, as there are amongst all people...but to paint the relationship in such a conspicuously and transparently negative way is just disingenuous. Yes, the Chinese are not doing business in Africa or the Global South (or Europe for that matter) out of the goodness of their hearts. Business, after all, is essentially about opportunism, regardless of what scale it's on - whether a roadside lemonade stand or state capitalism...BUT, they're better partners for Africa than the West has been.
+PSdissenter , Do you trust Red China? Be patient and read these words to find the truth.
Red China-the cunning thief/poisonous snake who built a road called COOPERATION ROAD as a GIFT for North Vietnam in the 60s. Suddenly, in 1979, 20 years later, the cunning snake Red China used this same so-called COOPERATION ROAD to send 300 thousand troops with hundreds of tanks and multi-rocket launchers to invade the entire North Vietnam border and killed everything that could move on the earth surface by the order of Red China Prime Minister Dang Xaoping. As a result, ten of thousand innocent
civilians were killed, raped, and burned alive; hundreds of villages,
factories, bridges, roads destroyed and leveled to the ground. This was the TRUST which the Naïve Vietnam Government had learned with its own endless destructions about the so-called “Conrad” Red China.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience, PSdissenter. True stories are more convincing that those in the media. When lies got repeated so many times, we're almost not sure what the truth is. But all I can be sure is China will never turn its back against Africa, the Chinese are all taught that African are their brothers and sisters the first day in school, no matter how the world changes, the relationship between China and Africa will never change. I'm very sure the Chinese aid and investment in Africa will grow exponentially after China wipes out it's last 20 million citizens left in poverty targeting in 2020. I am sure when China has more resource to help Africa, it'll make the African countries grow faster.
@@inssafh6052 Not like the west was any better. Did you forget 400 years of slavery hundreds of years under colonial rule Africa has been raped by the west. I literally can't understand why people would compare China to the west. China atleast brings trade and business the west literally has nothing but racism or bad sentiments perhaps some fake charity but that's literally it.
How about :USA in Africa :investment or exploitation?
How about :EU in Africa: investment or exploitation?
exploitation from the western cave ruler call white people
Both have an extensive history of African exploitation... Including forcing Africans into slavery for hundreds of years and stealing land and resources.
👏👏👏thaaaaank you
USA and EU rather exploit through investment. I mean they've been doing this for YEARS. History is my proof!
I think infrastructure is important for Africa. Whether they are genuine or not, if China can provide good infrastructure for Africa, then that's a good thing.
Infrastructure at what cost? That's the question.
Oh, well that kinda sucks. It would have been awesome the way it was shown in the video: Where there's one Chinese guy and all the other workers are from Kenya.
infinitecanadian
Do you know the purpose of such infrastrctures?
To the simplistic mind, it may seem that the purpose is to create jobs, however, this is short-term hence is false and is not the purpose.
The purpose of such infrastructures is to increase the rate of exchange of goods across regions which utilises such infrastructure, in so doing also increasing the rate of exchange of services and encourages more consumers.
You don't have the slightest idea of how such infrastructures are massively important and beneficial to Africa do you?
Do you care about Africa? Or just upset that Canada doesn't care about Africa as much as China does? What do you think this is?
infinitecanadian You're still going strong I see.
andy jack Ha! Guess who helped the Chinese grow? If it wasn't for Western capital, Western demand for products, Western know-how and the will to trade with the rest of the world, China wouldn't stand anywhere today. Global economic growth is the result of Western globalist and industrialists.
we African know what is best for us. that means we can make our own decisions on who we want to trade with. how ever. the colonial masters have since long abandoned us for decades. but now that god has send china . we are most grateful for that. regardless that china are taking the mineral re souses. we still want to trade with china. i found china to be the best partner for Africa. my only hope is that the Europeans and america can drop that high ego such as thinking that they are so superior and get on board . we need the Europeans and america too as long as they come and do a legitimate business with us. the more the better . treat us with respect and you got a good partner in Africa. there are enough raw material for everybody. all we need is a full cooperation . god bless the African continent. let,s go china. Africa is open for business
+i reble Our own decisions? What choice do you have? Africa is waiting for whoever "Saviour" of the continent presents themslves and are "grateful" for it. Just look at how Africans are treated in China how difficult China makes it to grant a visa to Africans who even have money to invest there vs a Wetserner. Africans like you just comfort the contempt Chinese or Westerners have for Africans.
jmbo72 business is business and it's nobody business who African continent chose to trade with. as long as they do a legitimate business in Africa. that,s all that matter
You probably have your own definition of the word "legitimate", do you? Business is business, you're into triviality aren't you?
jmbo72 call it what ever you pleased it still wont make no damn deference.
I agree 100%!!
westerners finally showing concerns for Africans? I am surprised.
weidingxian exactly my point😂😂😂 Jesus said, hypocrates are worse than murderers🤗
The problem is french military is still there in Africa.
Media doesnt show this of course. Ivory coast, rigging their elections in franco african countries.
Let's get serious. Africa has never been in an advantageous position since colonial days. It has always been exploited and the African leaders have allowed it to happen. Until those leaders get together and develop their most important resource, the Human Resource, Africa will always be in an inferior position. With regard to China vs Africa who has the advantage? Africa has the advantage as the abundance of resources on the continent is found nowhere else in the world. This is abvious to anyone with discernment. The question is will Africans wake up out of their slumber and start dealing with others using this knowledge as their most powerful tool? Africa wants to move into a "First World" status without going through the hardships and growing pains that are required. A pampered and spoiled child does not appreciate what they have if they don't have to work hard for it.The relationship and trading between China and Africa can be on a more level playing field. China however needs to realize that the most important resource to be developed in Africa is the Human Resource. Developing basic infrastructure is the key, because once this is done, everything else will fall into place. SANITATION: Much needed health and hygeine infrastructure in the continent will lead to healthier people., Healthier people=Stronger nations. CLEAN POTABLE WATER: Everyone needs access to clean water and the avilability of this basic resource will raise the standard of living in the society. BUILDING AND MAINTENANCE: It's one thing to build infrastructure and a manufacturing base on the continent, but if it is not maintained, what's the point? This key element is missed time and again. The masses in Africa must be engaged in these initiatives in order for the continent to elevate itself. The leaders must put away their begging hats and come to the negotiating table as a unified force. They have the power but it will only manifest itself if they are unified. Let's face it, if Africa succeeds in unifying as a continent, where will Europe and America be in the future? The sooner Africa realizes that strength comes in unity, the sooner they will realize that they have the power. Their true friends and allies will continue to do business with them and those that only want to exploit will fade into the background. Africa...wake up!
wow very nice! and very true no different from over in America. But as you mentioned until then. Oh well.
@ Fullcircle: Glad to see that someone has taken part of their precious time to read my message. Like they say, Rome was not built in a day, but some had to start the building! I believe the struggle continues for the true emancipation of Africa and the African people. I kinda dig your name "Fullcircle" as it is most appropriate...Africa was there at the very beginning, The very first civilization, and Africa is going to be there on top again, quite soon..... Africa is going through a Fullcircle. ONE LOVE.
The Truth Thanku One Love
The Truth totally true but these African politicians have so much ego and are too ignorants....seriously..this what khadafi was planning to do but no one had listened to him.....and also there is a lot of corruption...
If it is exploitation, Africa gains little, or get's destroyed currently that's not happening. Even if China benefits more, both sides still gain.
Since Africa is beginning to look 'delicious', I am beginning to wonder if China would be willing to assist Africa when it comes to "IMPROVING AFRICA'S MILITARY" 👍
How has and since when has Africa ever truly benefitted from anyone coming into Africa to "help rebuild"?
+Susan Boose You are trying to confuse. You play dirty. Just compare the decades Western powers in Africa, and the shorter period of Chinese presence in Africa. What have the African achieved? Are they better, or worse. No? Not even a slightly better?
We should have "Motive" (in good manner) in order to acheived our vision and that is naturally causes in business term, in the motive we kept inter-depended on each other to built good relationship by lend the hands to the world nation for keep growing.
CHINA
DOING A GREAT JOB
This is not an ideal situation, however if both parties can respect each other and the Africans know what they want out of this situation then it could bring some of these African countries above the poverty line
Quite dissastisfied with how some of the questions were being handled by Joseph and James, particularly about possible labour exploitation (to Joseph) and to what extent China's economic relations with Africa is dependent on China's own economic climate (to James). I take a personal interest in China-Africa relations and would like to see these crucial questions to be answered in greater depth (might have to find alternative sources of information, it seems).
On a sceptical perspective, several key questions we need to ask about China's involvement:
1. Does it assume a single 'national soverign interest'? - marginal groups may be left out. The programme does not ask their views.
2. Does it use the opportunity in Africa to intermittently assert its geopolitical power? (almost definitely yes)
3. Does it apply the same Western modernisation logic? i.e. those who are economically less developed are behind on the learning curve compared to those who are more developed. I suspect that is the case too.
Overall, a very comprehensive summary of key issues surrounding how China as an emerging power, the West and African (so-called) recipient countries are adapting to the addition of emerging powers (with their own operational logics and ethos). Undoubtedly the West as a traditional colonial and post-colonial presence in Africa is feeling threatened, hence looking at China's involvement sceptically.
it is called trade.... find ways that work for both.
The shoe maker should compete with Chinese import shoe rather than complain...first Africa lack strong educational background on engineering and science...
OMG Exactly Pady......And this is why whites and black Americans are going to loose and are loosing. Take note. Its going down as we speak.
Africa it's growing fast and furious
Let's not forget China doesn't have to invest or boost side activities. If it was a private entity doing this who would blink?
Why aljazira is not talking of 24 and slaves over 50 million congles killed by Belgium and France Germany
THANK YOU CHINA!!!
Im with the helping. But why doesn't anyone realize that some of the things they produce are cheap. Parts are no good. Get rich quick scheems.
Allow me to refrase the word cheap. When I mentioned cheap it wasn't referring to the dollar value or amount. I was referring to the quality. No matter the price a lot of items made are poor in quality but still made and sold to other countries including America. If you add the price and the quality either way its wrong. And this continues based on greed along with supply and demand. I understand the struggle but I also understand integrity. In America you stand by the work you do almost like a signature on a piece of paper. When an item says made in America it means something no disrespect. Im not putting all the blame on China nor America. But they both have a part to play. And both know the situation and the possible outcome from the time they both do business together. Its the CONSUMER that hurts in the end! And what does this show and teach class that its ok to produce such things no matter how its made, or if it falls apart and..... for most of these industries money rules and s[peaks only one language.
Wy Zhang Well spoken......and thanku
Of course China brings in some of its own workers, if they are making the loans they want to see the money well spent and not corruptly disappear. Workers in some of these countries have little experience of building large infrastructure projects, China is the world's best at this. Who designed some of China's tallest buildings? American architects who worked on the projects as China had little experience at building such structures.
At first, China Chinese always attended economy analyzers to help as peacekeeper for good inter-partnership by win-win bilateral trades for whole region. I'm sure finally the countries helped or colonize by Chinese immediately keep growing and to make them proud by created them to achieved same level of qualities living standard as other countries..
Why is no one listening to James the only actual African expert ? He basically said it’s not working and wouldn’t work unless certain conditions were met conditions that probably won’t be
Africa needs China and China needs Africa. Change is coming! However, Africa needs to take action. Key notes: (1) State Building (such as Manufacturing and Service Industries); (2) Economic Growth (such as Job creation) (3) Social Mobilization (such as Liberty and the right to bear arms); (4) Social-Democracy; (5) Ideas/Legitimacy; and (6) The Rule of Law.
If China is not in afrika out of necessity (just like other asian countries and the europeans) then explain to me why china supported the arabized North Sudan regime with military and financial assistance in its genocidal campaign against the people of South Sudan (Dafur) so that it could get access to the rich oil reserve that was located in south sudan. Furthermore china also showed its support for the murderous North Sudan regime by repeatedly using its veto power in the Security Council to block the UN from intervening in the crisis in South Sudan. Even Robert Mugabe who has been a staunch supporter of china recently (in 2016) cancelled the mining rights of two chinese firms to diamond fields, accusing them of looting gems worth more than $15bn. The Chinese and other non-Afrikan investors in afrika are just as "capitalistic" as their european counterparts. The sad truth about Afrika is that too many of the Afrikan countries have not advanced beyond where they were at the time of their political independence (Not independence). In order for afrika to progress Afrika needs leaders to change the role of Afrika from being just an "EXTRACTION SITE" for its natural resources and create a" more business friendly" environment that will allow black entrepreneurs (not politicians and political activists such as we see happening in South Afrika and other parts of Afrika) to establish manufacturing facilities that are either wholly-owned by Afrikans or in JOINT VENTURES with the government or foreign investors to convert its mineral resources into value added products for EXPORT and local/domestic use- this is the ONLY way that Afrika can escape out of its "DEBT TRAP" to the WEST and now China. Afrika needs leaders that are wise and proper handlers of POWER and part of the reason for this is that the leadership on the continent is too male dominated.
"...education has but ONE purpose. Everything else is a waste of time. The MAIN purpose of education is to train the student to be a proper handler of POWER. Power favor(s) those who handle it properly and strategically. ...the world is NOT run by blackness and beauty. It is run by POWER and those who know how to handle it properly and strategically. Being black and beautiful means nothing unless you are ultimately black and powerful. " (p154-155 & 165-166, Who Betrayed The Afrikan World Revolution? Dr John Henrik Clarke
China's for China. Good luck Africa. ... Hold on Modou, once people put on those cheap chinese shoes and they fall apart after the first wear, you will have your customers back

Hypocrisy.

african are buying chinese good - is this an INVESTMENT or exploitation?
same logic apply to china activities in african
china are buying african good - is this investment or exploitation
It's amusing how transparently leading and pointed the interviewer's questions are, lol. His bias on the issue is so blatantly obvious that the young editor from London tries to temper what he says. Hahahaha, ah, the old guard. Except for the use of the term "negro people" (lol) Victor Gao's spot on.
Al Jazeera should act more responsible than racist media from the west, you have an opinion about this subject in 2014, now it is 2016 and many things mention here are already out with the result. Al Jazeera should follow up on what were mentioned in this episode and give the audience an update. Then we will see any accusation laid out here is true or just jealousy, whether China Africa cooperation should be continue or be aborted.
God bless China 🇨🇳✊✊✊✊✊✊✊
BOTH!!
whos here in 2021?
-"you know"
Africa can say no, just putting it out there.
Did anyone notice Mr. Gao dodged the last question like the plague? Sounds fishy.
I live America and everything is made in China Mexico so what's the problem.europeans hating the relationship of Chinese and Africa
To talk about the extraction of raw material as exploitive is completed trash. From a historical perspective.During the Industrial Revolution should the English have built their steam engines in Africa and not in England since they were extracting the raw iron from Africa.Ridiculous.
Well said 🙂
