- Seventy percent of the world’s uncultivated arable land is in Africa. And that land is seen as a possible solution to feed the globe’s growing population. But Africa’s agriculture has been declining steadily since the 70's, and if this continent is to become the world’s bread basket, it will need some help.
Talk Africa explores China's role in helping equip Africa with the necessary knowledge and skills to achieve it's full agricultural potential.
As we continue our series on China-Africa co-operation, this week we’ll unpack China’s support of Africa’s agriculture.

It would be beautfull to plant tress, like a galery forest among fields. Lower production but on a long run more secure and ofcourse sustainable.

With the system that China has right now, China is the Best Choice to help develop Africa.
She has unlimited amount of funds, cheap and efficient labor force.
And she will finish on time as promised.

It's really uplifting to learn how well China and African countries cooperate for a mutual benefit. It looks to me like a respectful, healthy and pragmatic approach. Well done. I hope that Africans will be also able to stop and reverse desertification. A long time ago Sahara used to be a lush green land. Perhaps it could become one again. Best wishes!

China only has 7% arable land and no country in the world can squeeze more out of the land than the Chinese. Seeing all the good land in Africa not fully utilized she wants to help. If Africa can feed itself with surplus, then it can export to other countries. China has been able to lift 600 millions Chinese out of poverty it is much easier to repeat that feat in Africa with its vast and rich arable land. China had help from more developed countries during its early stage of development. Now this is one way to pay forward in Africa. Please stop being suspicious!

@Terry Harris like you've said, if the corruption occured, it's the problem for the local people to solve, chines is there to provide them with technology and equipment. of course most of the goods will be ship to china who is the biggest consumer in the world, for exchange the local will have the possibility to feed themselves without waiting for the charity from white people , medical equipment, high-end technolog (which the US will NEVER willing to share with anyone) and internationl currency they need to trade with other countries. The best part? It's hard to believe that Africa possess over 60% of the world's arable land and the vast majority has remained unfarmed for hundreds of years. Even today, you'd think they would have learned something from other cultures about farming and done something about it. Now, China has provided a short cut for them. They don't need to go through the long stages of saving and building capital equipment when China is willing to bring that all in. I still can't get over the fact that with all that land, the Africans are still have big famines and need AID all the time. Can't they connect the dots?

Africans can feed themselves. However when they are forced into a political system where they need to sell food for money for small things...having a large farm becomes harder. That in between (money and rising cost of living) causes more issues that you realise.

This is agriculture for export.(wheat, soya, TOBACCO).Biointensive farming of vegetables to feed local people is a wiser choice.
We need to involve society especilly the young people in agriculture value chain, get right and profound knowlodge, know how to operate in markets compete as soon as we can.

Especial fertilizer, how developed country produce food more efficiently is all based on use of fertilizer, selection and even produce the fertilizer would be arfica's future focus in agriculture. modern Fertilizer actually quite hard to produce, it require industry basics.

It is not true that Zimbabwe was once the breadbasket of Africa(what even of the world). What is true, is that in the old Rhodesia they were just behind South Africa in terms of general food production and their yields were in some cases better as that of South Africa due to better rainfall etc. The country was however a net-exporter of agricultural products especially cut flowers and tobacco. South Africa is the only country in Africa that is self sufficient in most foods except for rice and lately also wheat because we have half the population of Zimbabwe and Mosambique also in South Africa, which we have to feed. Obesity is a big problem in South Africa nowadays in comparison with the sixties and seveties!!!
