Hi Janie! I've used a version of your dry laundry detergent for about 4 years now. I wanted to let you know you can make your own washing soda! Preheat your oven to 400', spread plain baking soda about 1 inch deep (I buy it in bulk) on a large jelly roll pan, and bake it for 30 min. Stir around about half way through. The heat converts the backing soda into washing soda.

Just to let everyone know that T*DE has a smear campaign to stop us all from teaching/making our own detergents, by posing as reg ppl and saying that the homemade detergents ruined their expensive clothes and streaked it like bleach!
This is un-true and it is a SMEAR CAMPAIGN; paid through commissions to ppl, from P& 9G co...who has said in the newspaper they are losing money in sales each month over this homemade detergent phenomena!
P&G has used smear campaigning for decades! They did it to Amway, who won their law suit against P&9G a few years ago...and they did it to Crest Brand, and lost a lawsuit, they tried to smear many other companies as well. They only want your paycheck. they do not care about us or our safety of water and health.
KEEP shoving that money back in your OWN WALLET guys and dolls!
Make it yourself, use less chemicals in our wash and water waste system in our drinking water system too...
T8DE panicking is a sign we are winning the war on cancer causing chemicals in our households!
Do not pander to these companies...keep on truckin' and share this statement across the board! Whoot! Whoot!

As a tip, while you have your food processor out and grinding up soap. Go ahead and grind up some bars for future use. 32oz. peanut butter jars hold 1 bar of ground up Zote soap. Just keep them in a cool dry place. That way you don't have to clean your food processor as many times.

I did A LOT of research and decided to go with Janie's recipe. I was AMAZED with the results! my colored clothes are brighter and I no longer use bleach for my whites!I keep mine in the 5 gallon bucket and fill up 2 old detergent jugs at a time (so I go back into the bucket and have to remix about once every 2 months - but it saves on storage for us and works great!)

    Thank you for posting this!
i have been making my own Laundry soap for years as well as bar soap because my wife asked me to. i found your original recipe and it works fantastic!
you can make your own *Washing Soda* (sodum carbonate) from *Baking Soda* (sodium Bicarbonate) try this simple method of making washing soda. Another bonus is that baking soda is typically even less expensive (especially at big box stores) and making this at home can help further reduce the cost of budget-friendly cleaning recipes (like home made Laundty Soap wink wink)
    *Washing Soda Instructions*
Turn oven on 400 degrees F.
Pour a thick (1/2 inch or so) layer of baking soda on the bottom of the baking dish.
Bake for 1 hour, stirring 1-2 times in the middle, or until it has changed in look and feel. Baking soda has a silky/powdery feel and washing soda is more grainy and not silky. The baking soda will need to reach the full 400 degrees for this reaction to take place, so give it time.
Let cool and store in air-tight jar.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I think just the Zote and Borax combo would work just fine at the stage you had it on the stove! My grandma made homemade lye soap using only lye, water and pork tallow (homemade LARD), and they used the bar soap for bathing, and she grated it in her dishwater AND in her laundry. So the same detergent took care of ALL washing needs! btw, Crisco can be used to make homemade lye bar soap as well. Recipe is online. Just made probably twenty bars using one three pound can of old Crisco I was going to throw out because it went rancid. I'm TIRED of giving all the thieving companies our hard earned dollars. Sick of it! And in case nobody has noticed, all the big conglomerate companies VALUED our business SO MUCH over all these years, that they are NOW using GMO CROPS IN MOST OF THE BIG NAME FOODS!! That's HOW MUCH they love us. SCUMBAGS.

I bought the Totally Awsome Oxygen cleaner at Dollar Tree for (naturally) a dollar. T$de can shove it. I’ve used home made detergent ever since 2012 and it’s saved me a bundle and my clothes are just as, if not more, clean. I use home made cleaners and glass cleaner. My mother made her own cleaners back in the ‘50’s and they worked great. Yours is the best recipe since I began making my own detergent. I prefer dry detergent because it stores longer and I make double batches that last me a couple of years ( just me & husband). Keep up the good work! I subscribed!

Doesn't it seem strange when you realize how long it's really been that you've been making your own laundry detergent? Time flies! It probably felt like only 18 months until you factor in other details like where you were living when you made that first batch, or shopping for ingredients at the new store that opened 5 years ago, etc.

    • @jmh5651
      @jmh5651 9 років тому +9

Yes when I made that first statement I wasn't thinking properly. It has actually been since July of 2010. So I have been making my own for awhile. I now make liquid laundry soap because it doesn't need to dissolve and it makes my supply last longer

I agree Judy. Do you know anyone who makes the homemade but adds Gain or Tide to the mix? It seems odd to go the length of making homemade then contaminate with the store bought with all the chemicals.

I add just a tiny bit of cheap Dollar Tree Lavander LS, just for the smell. We're not allergic and it does give it a nice lavender scent. Just 1/2 cup for the whole thing. SO we are not hardly getting any of it. I know there are folks who can't do it and it makes them break out

About a year ago I got feed up paying high dollar for commercial brands, that honestly were not working so well on my son's work clothes. He works in a factory with metal. His clothes always smelled of grease and looked unwashed. In a money crunch I started making my own detergent using your recipe. End result-grease smell gone, clothes were cleaner. He came home from work talking about how great the new soap was, he was even the only person at break not bothered by mosquitoes, even with request for what soap I switched to, his clothes smelled so good, how on earth did I get that smell out? I've given out the recipe, given away gallons, even had money given to me for it. And to think I was only being frugal out of nessisity. Never will this dad buy commercial soap again! (Now I'm being encouraged to make body soap lol)

First, love your husky photo! :) Second, what an awesome testimonial! Now you know why Tide hates me for posting this recipe. Try it on your pots and pans and watch them shine! Try it on make-up brushes to get soft bristles that are truly clean of makeup...and try it on your tools. My tools in the garage shine! All the grease gone in seconds! I use it on my husky in thinned warm water in a spray bottle and she is so white!!

Went to do a load, only one gallon left, where's all the soap I made, "oh I told the nieghbors and they all wanted some so I gave them some. Even Ted, he's trying it out on his new truck. I've been doing a version for a year or so. I keep mine in the 5 gal bucket and fill a jug at a time. The trick I use to get rid of the jell consistency is; let the recipe sit over night. Take a wire coat hanger, straighten it out with a loop at the end. Get your power drill, attach, and mix the heck out of it. It will not go back to jelly. I actually use my drill-hanger-stirrer to mix the recipe as well. Hope that helps someone.

Zote has citronella in it. Enough so that you can clearly smell it's in there right through the wrapper. So if you or anyone is allergic to citronella, I wouldn't use Zote. Use the Fels Naptha instead. Keep in mind the amount of Zote is 3 times more than what comes in a Fels Naptha bar so you will use about 2 1/2-3 bars of the Fels Naptha if using the recipe that calls for Zote.

MrCougar214 so true I did a batch of zote laundry detergent and have notice that our skin itches a lot. I don't know if it's the borax or zote but it just feels like it's the zote I made😦. But I really love the smell...

I always leave mine in the five gallon jug after I make it, without any problems. I stir it really well, fill up my one gallon container half way with the detergent, then add water to top and shake well. Once that one gallon is used up, just stir the bucket again and repeat the process till the 5 gallons is gone. Works fine for me!

sad to say, not anymore. walMart now charges $1 per bucket even for the smaller round ones, I personally love the rectangle shaped buckets, so the dollar is worth it. If you have a Fire House Subs near you, their 5-gallon buckets are $2 but the proceeds go to local fire depts. Now that I can support.

Just take a look at the list of ingredients for Tide detergent:
    water
    alcoholethoxy sulfate
    linear alkylbenzene sulfonate
    propylene glycol
    citric acid
    sodium hydroxide
    borax
    ethanolamine
    ethanol
    alcohol sulfate
    polyethyleneimine ethoxylate
    sodium fatty acids
    diquaternium ethoxysulfate
    protease
    diethylene glycol
    laureth 9
    alkyldimethylamine oxide
    fragrance
    amylase
    disodium diaminostilbene disulfonate
    DTPA
    sodium formate
    calcium formate
    polyethylene glycol 4000
    mannanase
    Liquitint™ Blue (a dye)
    dimethicone
And there’s the list if you wish to research each ingredient in store-bought, chemical-filled detergents. Tide and other companies are putting out FLUFF campaigns and faux websites to deter the use of homemade detergents. They even call their one webpage FLUFF UNIVERSITY, you can't comment, there are FAUX names here on YT and other sites PRETENDING to be women saying they USED the homemade but STORE-BOUGHT gets it cleaner, type comments...this is their way of trying to turn the tables and get your PAYCHECKS back in their rich pockets!
It started a few weeks ago...you'll note they are not spending money on ads on YT like they were. Why? We are hurting their business of NOT BUYING their DEATH-Cancer filled products!
We're waking up the masses, and, all around the globe, they are ending chemical use in the homes! We are doing battle folks, and winning!
Keep your paychecks in your own wallet!
    Benefit yourself!
We are not the ones that have to change, they need to change for the sake of cancer causing carcinogens in our water/air!
If knowing there are a few carcinogenic chemicals and other toxic hazardous chemicals are in Tide detergent doesn’t convince you to change your mind I don’t know what will.
Remember, the smell of the chemicals in tide (from the washer/dryer) the output, as well as on your clothes is constantly being inhaled by your family and you. Each time you sweat (especially near your groin or armpits) your body absorbs the residue your fabrics contain.
Take a look at the warning label on tide if you are still unsure of whether to switch over to homemade detergents! Blessings!
If they want a battle campaign then let the ingredients in their soaps, vs. homemade soaps do the talking... RESEARCH your products BEFORE purchasing and before making. Know what is safe for your family. Don't fall to fake media and fake company websites. They are hoping you fall for their fake outlets of fake news.
Tide has went public on trying to find out why ppl are using homemade over their expensive chemical-filled products. There is a difference between freedom of speech and lies about other products. This list of chemicals came right off the Tide label!
Read your labels and research the subject for yourself. Blessings!

I make the powdered version;. My food processor broke, so I mixed hand-grated soap (1 bar Zote and 1 bar Fels Naptha) with the powdered ingredients, and just ensured they were mixed well together. I ended up liking it better, even though the soap particles are larger. Although both are extremely cost effective, the liquid version is less expensive due to the added water. For people who struggle with separation after some time sitting on a shelf, Fels Naptha and using a blender right away has helped me ease this over Zote--I don't know why. I love the idea of vegetable gkycerine and can't wait to make a new batch. It's also a great seller at our annual church bazaar, and a wonderful gift for teachers, neighbors, etc.

I make a recipe similar to this but I use 1 cup of white vinegar for my final rinse. The purpose of using vinegar is to neutralize any soap in your clothes, which it does quite effectively. And don't worry, if you use vinegar the fragrance won't linger and you won't have any soap buildup in your clothing.

I've been making this for 7 years since I developed skin issues and immune deficiencies after an accidental amputation. This works so well. My husband is a refinery worker and I've never had an issue getting his clothes clean...even not pretreating stains and such. *I hate to do that anyways.
We have hard water as well and I use the salt crystals as well that work amazingly. We do harness the power of the sun to help brighten our whites and dry our clothes. So, I'm not sure if this stuff helps whiten but I can say without a doubt...this is an excellent recipe. Thank you for your time and I say...if the big soap makers dont want folks making their own laundry soap...they should stop poisoning people, stop over charging and be transparent. Most people are on a budget and dont have the extra money to pay for salt or watered down detergents that dont clean as well anyways. Keep on creating lady and I thank you for your time!

Hi Janie! This is my first time visiting your channel. I love this recipe and will need to make some for myself! The only reason I now that borax thickens things is because last year my granddaughter talked me into making some slime with her. What an adventure that was! I thoroughly enjoyed making slime and playing in it. I actually added some cayenne pepper to my slime so that when I would play with it, it would heat up and massage my aching muscles in my hands. I didn't realize how well it would work though and played with it for an hour. When I quit I could feel the heat, the "burn". Hahahahaha. It took about 24 hours to go away and so I learned to only play with it for about 20-30 minutes at a time. Thank you for sharing you knowledge and skills in homesteading, and living more naturally, and using more safe and healthy products. I too get migraines from scents. Those who don't, don't understand how bad the migraines can be and how long they can last. I can't be around perfumes of any sort, or cleaning products with strong smells. I generally use Food Grade DE to do any scrubbing instead of cleansers. It is super cheap and safe and works great.
Do you know who Prepsteader Bob and the Self Reliant Road Show are? Prepsteader Bob and his wife, Mrs. B, go around the US and stop at various homesteads to give assistance in a category the homesteader says they need help in. It could be building a chicken coop, set up a garden, build up soil,.... to help each homestead to get a step up to make their homesteads a better place.
Prayers for continued health, blessings and provisions!

Nice vid. Just an FYI, washing soda (soda ash, sodium carbonate) is an extremely potent water softener. No crystals needed for softening at the end 😊Also, if you can't find washing soda, you can make a batch of it by just heating regular baking soda till it stops releasing gas (it looks really cool when doing it!). Heating it will release water and CO2 and viola... you have sodium carbonate (washing soda) now instead of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda).

I save hundreds of dollars per year. One thing I wanted to share with your viewers that I do that helps me tremendously. I also store my soap in the 5 gallon buckets. I just stir it good before I pour some into 2 -1/2 gal. containers. about every couple of months. AWESOME!!! SAVES so much money too. Try the powdered version too. Great for traveling and takes up a lot less space...makes just over a gallon. Just add all the ingredients dry, cut up, into a good processor or ninja blender...add the powder and grate the zote in the powder...do a little at a time till you have a trashbag full and then cut off corner of bag after a good massage and shake to blend in the bag and pour into glass container...add a 1 TBSP scoop and you are good to go!

Fyi, here's a quick tip. I put some in single water bottles to give to friends and family as a sample so they can see if they like it!!! I just made my 2nd batch today. My first batch I made with the full amount of borax and purex crystals. Everyone that I've given some to including my kids love it. The batch I made today was the baby/gentle kind (I will be a nana in December) plus I got to show my mom how to make it. But I used the less borax and lavender scent. It got nice and thick 😃. I'm transferring to hugs now! Thanks Janie!!!!

Janie I don't know if anyone has poster anything about this but I found Zote Laundry Flakes (500g) box at my local Walmart. I personally thought shaving the bar soap took alot of energy and then the residue was hard to get it off of my grater. I know you probably think I'm crazy but I have fibromyalgia and the energy it takes to shave the soap is just too much. So I just thought I'd share this info in case no one else has.

I have fibro (and hypothyroidism) as well...I'm beat all the time. I have some natural remedies if you're looking for some. Have you tried a food processor or Vitamix? That's what I used problem was that the soap was SO fresh and soft that I had to add a considerable amount of dry baking/washing soda to break it up. You may want to use the dry soap so you don't have to lug all that water around. That's what I did. I'm now going to ask how many scoops it'll take to make 1 gallon at a time so it's equally mixed ahead of time...sometime that's a problem if done in the washing machine itself. A LOT easier to store when dry. Good luck!

Kim, I also have fibro and hypothyroidism. I would appreciate to know what you do to help your symptoms. I'm trying LDN but at times I have to go off it because I need to take oxy when the pain becomes unbearable. The LDN does help but there are times that I have to do more and you can't use LDN and any oxy. TYIA

vllamas08 I have fibro & hypothyroidism and you can either cut it into small cubes or, if making dry detergent, cut it into small cubes, let it dry out and put it in some kind of vitamixer like I did. Mine was crazy fresh/soft and it worked for me. I mean, it's soap...it won't hurt anything.

  • @bncsmom1
    @bncsmom1 4 роки тому +3

Yes, you CAN leave it in the bucket. I do. I use Fels Naptha because I do not like the smell of Zote. I love the smell of Fels Naptha, though. I leave mine in the bucket. Stirring is not an issue. Just leave a stainless steel spoon on top of the bucket. It's NOT an issue unless YOU make it into one! Also, pour it into your blender after letting it cool and blend it on high for about 30 seconds per blender full, it'll help with the jelling effect.
As for the oils, I use tea tree oil in mine. It helps repel fleas. Just add a couple teaspoons to the bucketful of soap.

Theh Jabón ZOTE is 100% Mexican grandmother used it to wash her hair and never had problems on the contrary, super bright and abundant until she was 95 years old. My mother has used it for years and my father uses it to bathe. In Mexican families it is usual to have this soap at home. I also use it to wash mainly the white clothes just scratch it and put a cup of grated soap on the white clothes with hot water does not need borax or anything else ..

Just discovered your tutorial, I'm trying the dry version, one with, one without Borax. As I'm scent and skin sensitive, I made it with castile bar soap, I want a Zote version for tougher laundry as I too have construction workers in the home. I feel more comfortable dissolving the powder in very hot water prior to adding to washer (brand new HE $$$$ machine :), especially cool and cold loads. Adding the vinegar to the load as well as the rinse compartment has been wonderful. As soon as I have enough containers, I'm excited to make the liquid. The dish washing liquid is great, but other members miss the suds, so I'll add some store bought, about 1/2 ". The vinegar cotton wash cloth in the washer instead of dryer sheets is AMAZING, no harsh perfumey smell, just clean scent. The balled up aluminum balls eliminated all the static as well, an quietly, unlike tennis balls. At 65 it's great to still be finding new ideas and ways of doing chores and saving money in these days of taxes. I'm retired so I need to conserve resources and enjoy sharing with neighbors and friends this wonderful alternative to over priced toxic detergents. I'm watching some of your other videos, great ideas and enjoy your down to earth approach to sharing your ideas. I'm an American Hispanic New York City female and I pronounce Zote as you do, either way, IT WORKS. Keep saving me money Janie!!! but it's more about knowing and controlling what goes into the products though, and that's POWER!

I have been making my homemade laundry soap for many years. Looks to be the same recipe. However, I save myself a lot of work by grating my bars of soap in my food processor, do each bar one at a time and store in sandwich bags till ready to use. that way they are measured out. Then instead of cooking on the stove with water, put the water and grated soap in a bread machine on the dough cycle and let it work away. I bought a machine just for this at a rummage sale and I gave five dollars for it. After it is all in the five gallon bucket, filled with the hot water and stirred, let set over night. I do not dilute but pour into your soap jugs and use just half as much as if you had added more water to the jugs. I am 82 years old and always look for an easier way to do things. I have two laundry rooms, one up and one down. They are both HE machines and have never had any problems with them. I hope my hints may help you. Thanks for posting.

Made your laundry detergent Janie and washed my first loads of clothes today. I’ve been dissatisfied with ‘my washer,‘ for a long time but now I think it was the detergent! I washed a load of clean towels and wish I could post a picture of the dirty water! The stains were removed from wash cloths and my white sheets were much whiter and less dingy. I can only expect continued improvements! I did use a paddle attachment and a drill (I have a handy husband) which smoothed the detergent wonderfully! I also invested in 2.5 gallon beverage dispensers from WalMart (also on Amazon, but Walmart’s was a little better) for $7 and change, using four of them for storage. I sat one on the shelf over my washer for quick & easy dispensing. It did require a quick shake to get the flow going. The slim profile of the containers make for efficient storage. Wish I could post some pics! I’m so proud and going to share with my grown daughters. There were VERY minimal suds which would be beneficial for HE machines. So glad I tried your recipe, and thanks for sharing. 😘. My desire to detox and eliminate chemicals is what inspired my journey. So wish I could post pics... Thanks again and I want to encourage anyone concerned with the FB/crunchy posts about ruining your washer & dirty clothes with the homemade soap, to just try it & see for yourself! This everyday wife & Mom rates you 5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. P. S. I’ve been using Cheer detergent forever. When I told my daughter about my new detergent, she immediately told me about a FB post & sent me a pic with filthy water in the machine with ‘clean’ clothes that had been being washed with homemade detergent. I had seen similar pics when doing my online research. After sending her my pics of what MY ‘clean’ linens looked like after washing with Janie’s detergent, she wants some! Says her whites are dingy too. Good luck everyone, this recipe is easy to make, just do it.

Awesome!!! The dissing comments and rumors against homemade is comeing from Proctor and Gamble (Tide) products. They are even buying shelf space so walmart won't have place to stock the zote! Just keep putting your money back in your own wallets and see how much you love this zote soap and how much it saves your laundry/clothes bill. It's great for makeup brushes too. Try it! Bristles are so soft! I just rub them directly on the bar itself. You won't believe the makeup that will come out!

Hey Janie! I made this detergent back in August and it turned out great! Thank you so much for sharing your recipe!! I have six kids , I shared some, and lost two gallons (I used milk jugs, bad choice because they collapsed and ruined the detergent) so it was already time to make more. Which i was really excited about because i enjoyed making it:) But, this batch didn't get thick like it did last time (when i cut through the thick layer on top it was liquid underneath) which i was still going to use because you said it was still good. Well, before I got it bottled up one of my sweet lil babies dumped about 3 of the 5 gallons on my kitchen floor:) Kids, you gotta love 'em!! I lost all of the thick frothy stuff on top but went ahead and added the same amount of water and bottled what was left. The finished product is no longer pink (kind of clearish now) it still has a little soapy consistency but not as much as the last batch I made. All that to asked the simple question, do you think I should throw it away?? Any help would be greatly appreciated!! THANKS Janie!

    • @OurLittleHomestead
      @OurLittleHomestead  9 років тому +1

+Amber Dantzler Oh No, kids! I bet you have a clean floor! I would melt down another bar of soap and add that to the water or at least a half bar... and maybe add more borax and washing soda...stir in to what is left of the bucket of soapy water and let set again, about two hours; stir well again and then put directly into jugs. I'd put the bucket where the babes can't reach it too; don't want anyone drowning in soap bucket! If you have older kids, maybe you can get them to do some stirring. ?? But it sounds like you lost the best part of the detergent on top if it's all really clear now. It should be pinkish even after adding water to the jugs. It's still good just add more melted soap and stir. Yeah... milk jugs just don't hold up. I like my blue handled walmart water station jugs they've lasted for years!

    Hi male typing
I’m going to try this I can always tell when my wife switches laundry soap
You see laundry soap leaves residue this residue touches your skin if you notice it’s not so bad in winter and you forget about it why well in summer nights and outdoor your pores open up to cool you down in winter not so much so when pores open up and I perspire chemicals our press up against my skin then I start to itch so of course you scratch thru your cloths to relieve the scratch and guess what your pushing the chemicals deeper in to your pours I’m speaking from my experience sometimes I would just wash in hot water but of course no cleaning agent I will try this wish me luck .

My batch is ready to sit overnight. So far, so good. I got a little panicky when the washing soda/borax/baking soda didn't dissolve readily and actually started to re-crystalize. However, I continued to stir, added the grated Zote which I had soaking in 2 L of hot water, and which turned into a THICK gel. Again, I just continued to stir, poured it into a 10 gal bucket half full of very hot water, and added the glycerine. I filled the bucket almost to the top with more hot water. I hope it doesn't swell up and go over the top. So far, the mixture is quite sudsy, and I am worried about it being too thick to add to my bottles (1 gal milk jugs) in the morning. I am a single retired grandma, and frankly I don't have much personal laundry, but I am excited to give this to my two daughters-in-law for their family laundry. They each do tons of laundry, and I hope they like this. I wish I had known about this when my two sons were growing up--seems like I did laundry every single day, and detergent was never cheap. In hated lugging the store bought stuff home from the grocery store and paying so much $ for the privilege. Also, I can't help but feel this way is so much more environmentally-friendly.

Fels naphtha works wonderfully too. You don't need to add the extra bars to make up the difference.

This was excellent - I made the laundry detergent- everything is shiny, clean and I could NOT be happier - thank you! Onto the liquid dish soap next- and dry canning the rice and beans - simply good things,!

Thank you for a very good video, I making my own liquid laundry detergent too but I make my own soap paste by using potassium hydroxide and it's very good. But the downside isn't as cheaper as the bar of soap that I can get in supermarket. I love it so much this is all in one, I use as liquid dish soap, for cleaning my bathroom and toilet as well as cleaning window, glass and in my kitchen. I use pine essential oil or bouquet of flower fragrance oil ( soaping fragrance oil and skin safe ) in my laundry but sometimes I just leave it unscented.

In south Mississippi we bait trot lines for catfish with Ivory soap. I guess because it floats.
