Hi everyone, I just uploaded (24th Feb 2024) a new video where I talk all about my DIY laundry soap preparations (including this one!). If you are interested in this topic, I'm sure you'll find it interesting ua-cam.com/video/a5vdDFZW4qY/v-deo.html As always, check the description box of each video for all the important links 😊
Hi Elly, I have just made this soap but I was wondering do I need to let it cool before I dilute it? I would prefer to just get it over with now it’s off but it’s still warm and I’m just wondering if I could dilute it at this time or do I have to wait for it to cool? Thanks for your videos!
Hey Elly, your videos are super great. I noticed that individuals are telling you that you are talking to much. Just know that you have supporters that enjoy learning and receiving the full understanding of your tutorials so we can learn and understand in complete details. Thank you for your time and thank you for the free wisdom that you have been passing on. Some people just want a quick fix without actually learning.
You are my favourite UA-cam. This channel is SO underrated. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge and wisdom Ellie! The church of Elly’s everyday soap making will forever be grateful. May the suds be with you 🙏
Hi Elly! I just made this recipe yesterday for the second time. Strangely, the first time I did have that fatty layer on top, but this time nothing!!! Same recipe, same potassium hydroxide (although months older now), same crock pot. One small difference was that I didn't use distilled water this time, I used our drinking water which is filtered well water. Also, the first time the soap turned to custard, mashed potatoes, paste and saponification very quickly, and this time it took about 2 hours to fully saponify according to my ph strip! Such an amazing difference, all things considered, wouldn't you say? As always I so much appreciated being able to go back to your video to refresh and enjoy your tutorial. And now I'll happily buy you a coffee!
Thanks Darlene! I guess the well water made quite the difference. Minerals in water can have all kinds of interesting impacts on pH and water/soap chemistry.
Elly you are so freaking adorable I can't stand it! 😊 You could never talk too much. I enjoy listening to you talk about the projects and benefitting from your experience and knowledge! ❤❤
I love your videos. I used your liquid soap making recipe and I had to cook it about another hour before it came clear and I also use phenaltheline (sp?) but the soap came out wonderful. I made laundry soap before and wasn’t thrilled with it but this looks great so I will do this one. I do love your recipes because they make a decent amount but not too much either. I just don’t really want to make huge batches of anything. I can always make more. People always at to me “ oh,do you sell it, you should, you know.” But the thing is once you start selling things you love making, it changes things quite rapidly and then it becomes a job and I love making all these things too much to make that leap. We’re not rich but we’re lucky to be very comfortable enough so at 71 I can be home with my husband who was diagnosed with Ahltzeimers 5 years ago. He is still pretty good but I do have to oversee his daily needs like getting him to take showers, take his meds etc. I do my Soaping, etc to have fun. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and recipes. I find you very wonderful to listen to and watch.
I think you are amazing. Thank you for so generously sharing all your knowledge and recipes. You are a great teacher and because of your videos I have now ordered a soap loaf mould and am busy ordering everything else that I need. All the way from a very hot South Africa. 😊
This is great!! I've made my own laundry detergent a couple of times and love it. I make an extremely large stock pot when I do. It's time consuming but it saves so much money in the long run & u make something you're proud of that cleans amazingly compared to store bought.
Yes that's so true! I really like the bar soap versions, somehow they seem easier. But I had requests for a true liquid soap for laundry, so I went for it!

I'm so glad you showed us a new liquid detergent and that your last recipe jelled after getting cooled. I made 2 batches with your last recipe. They both jelled, I thought I had done something wrong! So thank you for clarifying this for us. I still really love the jelled soap, it cleans our clothes very well!! By the way it's winter here so it doesn't take long for things to cool. I did reheat and melt down both batches so I could put them in jars instead of bottles.
Thanks for that Arlene, actually I love the performance of the gelled version! It's my favourite so far. The washing soda added helps (didn't add that here).
That's how I used to do it when I made my laundry gel from Sunlight soap! It was an amazing recipe and there's something weirdly satisfying about scooping that gel 😆
I can’t wait to try this recipe. I have done your laundry bar soap and I use it in the kitchen and it is fabulous ❤. So glad you’re back with your fabulous tutorial videos. I have really missed these.
Ooooh! I was just thinking about making a liquid laundry soap... I have 2 empty 1 gal vinegar jugs that are just begging to be filled up with something 😁😆 Also, no crock pot available, so I've been looking for a recipe for the past couple of days that can make use of my s/s pot I have just for soap making. So lucky to be a subscriber! 🤙 Aloha!
at 12:55 you say "its not quite done there" how long did you end up leaving it for before it safonified? this is my first attempt and I want to make sure i don''t mess it up, thanks
Hi Elly, what a great video and a great alternative to the laundry bar soap recipe I currently use (yours) for the laundry. I’d be keen to find out how adding the washing soda goes as I love that cheap , effective product so much 😂 I find these home made products , including the 50/50 water and white vinegar as a fabric softener, really work well. My front loader never gets scum build up now whereas in the past , when I used store bought fabric softener, and powder, there was always a grey, scummy residue in the part where the soap and softener go. My machine is years old and still sparking clean . Well done Elly Burpengary Jo 😊
Great video. I too have got old caustic soda for bar soap and waiting for the day it doesn't work, I am not wasting it. I am just learning about liquid soap making and would like to know that as soon as you have mixed your potassium lye can you mix it in your oils and not have to let it cool at all.
Hi Elly, I've just made this soap in my crockpot and once it reached the custardy phase it firmed up very quickly! I have 2 questions: 1. My soap was milky too when I did the ph test... when you say that your potassium hydroxide was quite old, how old is quite old? Mine is maybe only a year old but I'm not sure how old too old is. 2. Once the soap is saponified, when can you start the dilution process? You were busy and took your time, but how long should you wait ideally? Thanks so much for all that you do, and how well you do it!
Hello Elly! Not new to hot soap, but new to using KOH and liquid soap making. I thought I'd practice on some older oils and i chose corn oil. I actually planned on using this for dish/hand soap. However, after mixing the lye water was mixed in, it did not saponify. Its really separated and gross. It got pretty warm andvi shut off my stovetop. Can it be saved for anything? Oh and even though its been kept very dry and cool, my KOH is older.
The extra fat might be due to the addition of citric acid... not sure if we need to adjust the KOH amount like NAOH while adding the acid... But either ways I think the liquid soap came out a winner... love the lather❤ Thank you Elly!
Thanks, yes I did adjust the KOH to account for the citric acid. The blog post (link in description) details some more of my musings about what happened to get the superfat. I think it's the variation in SAP values too. Calculators all use averages!
Hi Elly, thanks for this recipe. I've been using liquid body soap & detergent made by your recipes. I can't thank you enough. Btw, what is difference between this recipe with the other recipe, the one for the bar detergent to be grated as a liquid one? Thank you.
Hi, first of all thank you for all the great info you provide. I made 100% coconut oil liquid soap twice. I use soap calc. I did it 0 super fat. Once it was done - I used the clear water method and it was very clear, but after a bit I noticed oil in the soap. ?? Therefore my soap when I dilute it is not totally clear 😢 bummer. It works but I want it clear. Thanks for your input
SAP values for oils can vary, so it might be better with your oil to use the lye excess method. Jackie Thompson's book is excellent for teaching that (affiliate link) amzn.to/3TPUx11
I made this recently, although I swapped out the rice bran oil for sunflower oil since that’s what I have plenty of. Despite buying the KOH very recently & running my recipe through soapcalc (& adjusting for the citric acid) I also ended up with a layer of super fat. However, it hasn’t affected the detergent. This morning I washed whites, including some dodgy dog stains, on a COLD WASH & it all came out super clean and smelling fresh. Thank you for this video, it has been very helpful.
This looks so fun to make!! I've got to try it after I unpack all my soap stuff. We moved house again, and that's always the last to unpack. Also, I love your kitchen so much! It's very lovely and looks really efficient to cook in.
Hi Elly 🇦🇺 You are such a great teacher 😍 I already bought washing soda as in your other video😅, expecting that you will use it here as well! Can I add washing soda in this recipe, and in what ratio? And when to add it? Thank you Zahia from Canada 🇨🇦
Elly, Thank your, I love your videos .. I normally add washing soda to the machine and then use my 100% coconut laundry liquid soap .. I do want to try adding washing soda to the liquid soap ..I have a question if I want to add washing soda to this - at which stage can I add it please ?Thank you
Hi Elly! I really appreciate this new video, thank you! I made your previous recipe which did turn to a pretty solid gel. I've been diluting it in a little hot water before adding to my laundry, and it works, but it's not so convenient. My question is: would a crockpot be the preferred vessel to use? I have one which I've used to make other soap batches, including the "gel" laundry soap. Can't wait to try this true liquid laundry soap recipe❣🙏
Hi Darlene! Thank you, glad you found this useful. The crock pot is easier in terms of temperature control, but that's the only benefit I think. Depends on the type of stove you have :)
Wow! Thos is beautiful. Thank you Elly. I will definitely try this . One question please, I think this could be used as a liquid shower soap, right? because you used all the natural good stuffs to make it. If Not, please Why cant it be used as shower soap? I will appreciate and look forward to your favorable response please. Thanks again Elly👍
Thanks so much Elly. I just love your videos and your willingness to share when things don’t go exactly to plan- it’s both very useful and relatable! I’m hoping to get my first batch of soap made this evening, thanks to your videos. From a new subscriber on Vancouver Island :)
Hi, no they are different. Sodium hydroxide is usually used for bar soap recipes, potassium hydroxide for liquid soap (makes soap paste rather than hard soap).
Hello Elly. I think I watched all the liquid soap related videos and I don't remember seeing anything about making body wash soap. I keep my Dove unscented 2 liters pump empty bottles in the hope that someday I will be able to make something at home that will fill them up. The idea is really to stop using single use plastics by making my own in large quantities. I wonder if you could make a video about making liquid soaps with a creamy texture.
Another beautiful video, Elly! I recently ran out of my store bought laundry detergent and thought to use my handmade liquid soap. I added borax and washing soda to the wash bin and I love the results! Have you tried that? Any suggestions?
Hi Elly! I’ve been trying to find a recipe for liquid laundry detergent and I’m keen to try this. You mentioned you also have a HE front loader. I’m wondering if you use cold water to wash and does it leave the body oils or body odour or any oily substances behind on the clothing? I made a laundry powder formula and it’s very drying sucked cause there were no emulsifiers or ant redisposition agents. How does your liquid laundry soap lift, suspend, remove and stop redisposition? I’m a curious cat now 😂. Love your videos ❤❤❤❤
Hi Nicole, I would just say that this is nothing like liquid laundry detergent! It's soap - they are very different things. This video will help explain ua-cam.com/video/a5vdDFZW4qY/v-deo.html
I just wanted to keep the recipe simple, but yes, castor oil is great in all liquid soap recipes! You would need to calculate it properly though with a soap calculator.
Hey, i love you videos, thanks for sharing! I have a question regarding both laundry detergent made from cp soap (made with washing soda) and this liquid soap with potassium hidroxyde. Do you add any preservative or do you think it is needed? Sorry if you mention this, and i have not seen it, kinda on a schedule. will watch it later.
Hi, no I don't add preservative. I find they keep very well for home use, up to 6-12 months depending on storage temperature. The high pH helps preserve.
Hi.. thank you so much for your recipe, 🙏, realy enjoy your explanation in the process and btw thank you for posting again😃, how long it will be safe to stored, and is there any ingredient to prolong the storage periode?
Thank Elly for another well done video. Love this recipe! I like to use baking soda to soften my hard water, so in this case would you recommend using less? Thank you from U.S.A.
That's a great question. I'm not sure how effective baking soda would be, but it's worth a try. I'm actually thinking of mixing some of this LS with a solution of washing soda and water, and see how they go together. My bar soap laundry gel recipe works wonderfully and it has washing soda incorporated (also, you can make washing soda from baking soda - pretty easy, google can tell you how 😉)
Dear Elly, I would like to ask if it would not be better to add enough water right at the beginning of the production process? So that later there is no need to dilute the mass of soap with water, and the production process itself with more liquid soap should be easier than with solid soap.
Hi, no, it's best to keep the water content low and make a soap paste before dilution. Otherwise the lye is too dilute and it's very hard to achieve saponification.
Hey! I wanna ask something. How can we make a soap with good foaming?like the soap makes a good foam as we wash our hands with it. What ingredients must be add more?tnx❤
This video: Choosing Oils for Soap Making - Oil types and fatty acids, balancing recipes and Soapcalc explained ua-cam.com/video/V-uDPifp3n0/v-deo.html
Yes! You can use olive oil in place of the rice bran oil, but if you want to make any further changes please use a soap calculator to make a new recipe. There are links for how to do this in the video description :)
Thank you for all the detailed information. Can't wait to try it. I was curious about the NaOH substitution for potassium hydroxide. There is so much to learn. ❤❤❤🌹🌹🌹
Generally speaking, NaOH is used for bar soap, and KOH (potassium hydroxide) for liquid soap. NaOH makes solid soap, KOH makes paste which you can dilute without it wanting to turn back to a solid.
All my laundry bar soap recipes make great dish soap. There's even a video on how I use bar soap to wash up :) Check out the main channel video page - all there.
I wouldn't bother with baking soda, and I haven't tried washing soda with this yet either. I thought I'd make a simple all-soap recipe this time. I think adding in a washing soda solution may enhance it, but I haven't tried it yet.
This is cool experience! I have a question as I would love to try making it, I recently found out that quite a few people are allergic to coconut ~ do you have any suggestions for substitute?
Thanks Katie! Unfortunately coconut oil is quite essential for this recipe. It makes the most 'cleansing' soap. There are some other oils that behave similarly, eg. palm kernel oil, but you'd have to recalculate a new recipe to use that instead of the coconut.
Last time we talked about making lye from wood ash and you said it was difficult to make lye a consistent strength... it looks like there are ways to adjust for that. Is there a way to test your lye, (either sodium or potassium) before mixing on the stove, for it's strength. I'm thinking that if you knew your lye was weak at the time of measuring... that you could add a bit more and get the excellent results that you expect? 💖🌞🌵😷
so, im curious about your essential oil amounts. Here in the states a 1 oz bottle (600 drops) of some essential oils is outrageous. We typically use them by the drop. About 25 drops is 1/4 tsp. Your little cup looks like a large amount of essential oils. 1oz or 10 ml basil essential oil is 10$. Is this what you are doing? Are your essential oils cheaper?
I'm buying them from bulk wholesale/soap making suppliers. EO's are usually added to bar soap at 3% of the oil amount (in grams) in the recipe, in liquid soap usually around 1%. So yes, it can be a lot if you're making 1-2 kilograms (1000-2000g) of soap :)
Hello i would like to ask i saw your Rosemary soap and i want to create that because we have project and my question is can i create 5 pieces soap? Because it's only for our defense how can i calculate it? And we would like to add aloe vera for extra ingredients
Great video, thanks so much, Elly! I tried the one last week and my soap congealed quite a bit. It was 100% coconut oil, so I think that had a lot to do with it. I will be trying this one soon. May I ask, how old was that lye, do you think? This is the first I've ever heard of lye getting old, and now I'm nervous bc I have a big box of lye that's been there for a few years. 😬 Also, would you say that when warming up the soap and water to make the dilution, that that would be a good time to add washing soda? P.S. That fatty layer of soap would probably be perfect to use to wash dishes. 🤔
Thanks, great comment. Well, I'd say my little tub of KOH is at least 5 years old! It really depends on storage though, and humidity. I wrote a bit more about what could have gone wrong in the blog post, so that might help explain further. I really wanted to add washing soda to this, but it's not something I've tried yet with liquid soap, so I thought I'd just keep this as a plain soap to start with. I am going to try adding some diluted (in water) washing soda to this now and see how it goes. I'll share if the results are good. The washing soda does really seem to improve the performance I think!

Hi Elly, thanks for this recipe. I've been using liquid body soap & detergent made by your recipes. I can't thank you enough. Btw, what is difference between this recipe with the other recipe, the one for the bar detergent to be grated as a liquid one? Thank you.
Does the fatty layer add softness to fibers?
This has been very helpful! I plan on adding Plant extracts for this, when do you think is the best time I can put it in?
Great video, thanks Elly
Thanks for sharing.Elly. Much love to you frim Pretoria, South Africa 🇿🇦 ❤️
Thank you :)
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking Thank you :)
Thank you! You're so awesome!
Thank you!
This is a wonderful recipe thank you for your helpful video 🙂
My pleasure 😊
This looks so fun to make!! I've got to try it after I unpack all my soap stuff. We moved house again, and that's always the last to unpack.
Also, I love your kitchen so much! It's very lovely and looks really efficient to cook in.
Thanks! It's a fairly plain kitchen design, but very practical! Has everything I need :)
Elly madam a lots of love from INDIA❤
Hi Elly 🇦🇺
You are such a great teacher 😍
I already bought washing soda as in your other video😅, expecting that you will use it here as well!
Can I add washing soda in this recipe, and in what ratio? And when to add it?
Thank you

Elly, Thank your, I love your videos .. I normally add washing soda to the machine and then use my 100% coconut laundry liquid soap .. I do want to try adding washing soda to the liquid soap ..I have a question if I want to add washing soda to this - at which stage can I add it please ?Thank you
Thanks, you will like my new video on this topic ua-cam.com/video/a5vdDFZW4qY/v-deo.html
Hi Elly! Amazing class about soap! Thank you so much!
Tell me, have you given up on adding washing soda? If yes, why that?
No, definitely not! Check out this update video I shared today :) ua-cam.com/video/a5vdDFZW4qY/v-deo.html
Thank you l was waiting for this recipe
Most welcome 😊
Yes, it definitely can!
What is a good sub for rice bran oil? Olive?
Yes, olive is a good sub, but I'd still run it through a soap calculator. There's less room for variations in LS making.
Thanks so much Elly. I just love your videos and your willingness to share when things don’t go exactly to plan- it’s both very useful and relatable! I’m hoping to get my first batch of soap made this evening, thanks to your videos. From a new subscriber on Vancouver Island :)
Thank you. Glad to help (even with mistakes!)
at 6:52 you talk about sodium hydroxide, is that the same as potassium hydroxide? can I use sodium hydroxide for this recipie?
Hi, no they are different. Sodium hydroxide is usually used for bar soap recipes, potassium hydroxide for liquid soap (makes soap paste rather than hard soap).
Thanks Elly.
Hello ! Thank you for the recipe 🥰
So, do we need to let it cure before use ?
No, you can use it right away.
Thanks, Elly. That's amazingly easy. Hope I get it right this time. Thanks for all the extra links, too.
You're welcome. Liquid soap making is trickier than bar soap making, but fun if you love it!
Dove isn't a soap - it would be impossible to make a traditional handmade liquid soap like that unfortunately.
Another beautiful video, Elly! I recently ran out of my store bought laundry detergent and thought to use my handmade liquid soap. I added borax and washing soda to the wash bin and I love the results! Have you tried that? Any suggestions?
Yes I have, it works great! I find washing soda and borax do a similar job though, so normally I just use washing soda :)
Can we use tallow beef instead of coconut oil? Thank you!
You could, but you'd need to calculate a new recipe for the new oil combination ua-cam.com/video/dBPmh4UpoHk/v-deo.html
Hi Elly.
In my country, I cant buy ricebran oil, what would be a good substitute? Thanks in advance.
Olive oil is a great sub for RBO
Thank you Elly! I'm curious as to why no castor oil in laundry soap?
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking Thanks a lot for your response!
What other type of oil can we use instead of the rice bran oil?
Thank you for the video.
Check the other comment replies :)
Hi.. thank you so much for your recipe, 🙏, realy enjoy your explanation in the process and btw thank you for posting again😃,
how long it will be safe to stored, and is there any ingredient to prolong the storage periode?
Thanks. This will keep quite well, no other ingredients required.
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking ok, nice.. thank you 😃
Thank Elly for another well done video.
My bar soap laundry gel recipe works wonderfully and it has washing soda incorporated (also, you can make washing soda from baking soda - pretty easy, google can tell you how 😉)
Thank you.❤
Dear Elly, I would like to ask if it would not be better to add enough water right at the beginning of the production process? So that later there is no need to dilute the mass of soap with water, and the production process itself with more liquid soap should be easier than with solid soap.
Hi, no, it's best to keep the water content low and make a soap paste before dilution. Otherwise the lye is too dilute and it's very hard to achieve saponification.
Hey! I wanna ask something. How can we make a soap with good foaming?like the soap makes a good foam as we wash our hands with it. What ingredients must be add more?tnx❤

Elly is this soap gentle enough for baby clothes?
Sure
Rice bran oil is super expensive here for some reason. What other cheaper alternatives would you recommend?
Olive oil is a good sub for RBO, but it's expensive too. Best to calculate a new recipe :)
Instead of rice bran oil can we use canola or soybean oil
Yes, you could, but you'd need to recalculate the recipe :) ua-cam.com/video/dBPmh4UpoHk/v-deo.html
I don't have rice bran, what else could I use? Almond? Apricot? Jojoba?
Awsome Thankyou ☺️♥️
You're welcome 😊
How awesome!!!! Is it possible to use olive oil or another liquid oil? I’ve not seen rice bran oil in the United States.😢
Yes! You can use olive oil in place of the rice bran oil, but if you want to make any further changes please use a soap calculator to make a new recipe. There are links for how to do this in the video description :)
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking thank you so much! That would be my only change❣️
I get mine from the chef’s store and is very cheap
Thank you for all the detailed information. Can't wait to try it. I was curious about the NaOH substitution for potassium hydroxide. There is so much to learn. ❤❤❤🌹🌹🌹
Generally speaking, NaOH is used for bar soap, and KOH (potassium hydroxide) for liquid soap. NaOH makes solid soap, KOH makes paste which you can dilute without it wanting to turn back to a solid.

Hi Elly, have you experimented with dual lye liquid soap recipes?
No I haven't to be honest. I have read a lot about them but decided to stick with plain KOH liquid soap as I'm really happy with it.
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking Thank you. After watching a number of videos, I have decided to try the plain KOH for now.
Hello There,
Have ever made dish soap?
I was wondering, you are the perfect teacher❤
Thank you for sharing!
All my laundry bar soap recipes make great dish soap. There's even a video on how I use bar soap to wash up :) Check out the main channel video page - all there.
Hi Elly….. thanks for your video… how about adding washing soda and baking soda?
I wouldn't bother with baking soda, and I haven't tried washing soda with this yet either. I thought I'd make a simple all-soap recipe this time. I think adding in a washing soda solution may enhance it, but I haven't tried it yet.
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking thanks Elly….
I add a handful of washing soda and borax to mine when I reconstitute the paste with water to make the final detergent. A little goes a long way.
What other oils can we use? I live in Brazil, and this rice bran oil is not available… can you help me😅

@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking Interesting, learn something new. 🤷♀
hello Elly, can you make liquid soap using the cold process method?
You can try, but I've never found it reliable.
Yes, that's very true it would have been great to test first, but I don't know the method for that at this stage.
so, im curious about your essential oil amounts.

Also, would you say that when warming up the soap and water to make the dilution, that that would be a good time to add washing soda?
