  • This show is still great, but man could it have been better. Later "pointless explanation" moments apparently come directly from the manga, so really CloverWorks was just showing us what we were in for. It's bad either way.

This is an anime airing in the SPRING 2021 ANIME SEASON about shadows and theirliving dolls. It's done by CloverWorks who also animated Wonder Egg Priority, Fate/Grand Order, and The Promised Neverland. It's based on a manga that's published in YOUNG JUMP essentially making it a SHOUNEN ANIME. It stars the main characters EMILICO / EMILI-KO and KATE, her SHADOWS HOUSE master. It was also covered by MothersBasement and other popular anitubers / anime UA-camrs. This is a review / analysis of this anime Shadows House. Shadows House is also getting a Season 2 / Shadows House S2 / Shadows House Season 2 - to-to

Actually saying that the show spoils the plot/mystery in the first 2 minutes does more to spoil the show than the actual show itself. Most people with no knowledge going into the show isn't going to have any context to even know what's going on there, or even think there is any mystery or plot to be spoiled at the onset. It's like telling someone that "they'll never guess the ending" and by saying that it makes the ending predictable because now they're purposely looking for a "twist" to happen.

I don’t read the manga. I’m an anime only who got spoiled by the studio producing the show. If you pay attention to literally anything you watch, it’s not hard to predict things, except there was no prediction here because it just blatantly shows you. I see your point in that someone who normally turns their brain off when watching anime would now be on the lookout for something, by why are you watching this video or even a mystery show if you’re not going to pay any attention to it?

@@To-To I didn't read the manga either and saw no issue with how Shadows House started. Maybe I 'switched off my brain' as you keep repeating, but the opening segment doesn't reveal anything... The coffee is a big clue? Sure. But clues are different to facts.
It's such an early scene that most people with little to no context of the series wouldn't know what it might mean. If you were 100% confident the coffee was being used to brainwash ordinary humans into losing their memories and to be loyal to the nobles as 'living dolls' then I'd really like to know how you could be so sure.
I watched Odd Taxi and pretty strongly believed by the end of the 1st episode that the protagonist was just seeing everybody else as animals rather than that actually being the case, from pretty obvious clues that you would catch if you were paying attention... That doesn't mean there was a problem with it, and I couldn't be sure. Similarly, just because I can theorize coffee is being used to brainwash the dolls, it doesn't 'spoil' anything. Some manga readers complaining because it happened later in the source material doesn't add legitimacy to either, of course it's obvious to them... Especially since most liked the adaptation from what I've seen, and how it was handled.
I did have an issue with how story points were revealed later on, but it's a bit more forgiveable given how Kate knew most of that already so the mysteries were already known by the characters. I also had issue with a certain bizarre scene in which Emilico climbs up a crane instantly, jumps off, changes direction midair and has abnormal strength but...it was one scene. I can get over it. I couldn't give less of a shit about manga readers, however. At least in regards to how I view and critique a series. However, I am concerned about subsequent seasons, if it gets any, given how it apparently changed things drastically. An anime doesn't need to follow the manga to be good, but it does give cause for concern for the future. An 8/10 season imo, better than average but far from perfect.
Edit: Manga author said he'd make it work if there was another season too.

I can't really see why kate would care about humans especially since she grew up in an environment where a shadow failing their debut was celebrated. Can faces who have been absorbed by shadows be saved with water similar to how emilico was able to get out of mind control? Why is the shadows family so hellbent on indoctrinating and keeping shadows and faces under this very specific structure? Is it just for power or some other reason? There are still a lot of questions to be asked.

From what I read it's the authors decision to change some things in the anime, the reason is because she/he taught that it might not get a second season and that she/he will just fix the plot points in the second season (also good news we have a second season now) so can't blame Cloverworks because it's the authors safe choice
Man people be just complaining to Cloverworks about every adaptation they do
Personally for me when I found this out I tried the manga and it's pretty much the same but with some minor and important details that were not included and some scenes change which is quite understandable given that it's meant to be just an adaptation that needs to be concluded in 1 season, and also because the manga is such an info dump. I'm still reading the manga and it's fvckin great. Hopefully S2 would help give more context in the lore

About the blaming cloverworks for their every adaptation part, its most likely due to how they adapted the Promised Neverland S2.. I'll say this in the softest way possible, it's so shit that tpn fans choose to completely ignore its existence as if the show never got a S2 at all. Though it's probably not the studios fault in this case if what you say is true, most people who dont know this will shoot the blame bullet at CloverWorks because, well, they fucked shit up big time with a pretty popular show and the trauma is still there 💔

I did not. I blame it on CW because they've done similar in their other shows AND the beginning scene is the most egregious and the one that ruins things the most which they did change. That being said, if the "shounensplain X thing as soon as it's introduced" is a manga thing, then it's a flaw of the manga. It's a flaw either way so it's not like it particularly matters happens who it falls on.

@@To-To Excuse me but how can you complain about this being a poor adaptation if you don't know the source material that's being adapted? I read the manga, watch the anime and check on the subreddit. Nobody there is complaining about what you've said. There's literally only two significant complaints that manga readers have with the anime adaptation, one with episode 4 and the other with episode 10, and you didn't cover either of them because, as I've said, you didn't read the source material, so you don't know what's the problem the anime **MIGHT** have.
You complain about the way the anime sets its mysteries and often reveals them quite quickly. That works in the exact same way in the manga. You mentioned soot. The origin of soot was never a mystery. Kate reveals it in the exact same way in the manga. You also mentioned the first few minutes of the first episode. While it's true that scene reveals a lot, considering the fact that Shadows House has a much slower pacing than The Promised Neverland, where the mystery is presented in the first episode, while the Shadows House manga is just reaching that point at chapter 100m it was probably necessary to generate interest. It takes Kate and Emilico 10 chapters of them literally just reading, cleaning and chatting to leave their rooms and start showing the place where they live. So the anime shows a bit of that in the first few minutes to hint at the larger world that's outside of their rooms because the first three episodes take place mostly inside of them.
You say "if the 'shounensplain X thing as soon as it's introduced' is a manga thing, then it's a flaw of the manga" but you don't get that those mysteries that are explained quickly are not the core of the greater mystery that drives the manga's plot. And a lot of those "reveals" are partial and incomplete, the whole point being to show you something, then discover it's a part of a bigger thing that's still not full understood. Going back to soot, the reveal of where it comes from happens quickly. The reveal of how it works and is used happens much later. This isn't just a suspense/mystery series, the slice of life/moe/comedy elements are also a big part of it and it keeps adding elements from other genres that blend in quite well.
But my final point here is that the extremely negative and condescending way you treat this adaptation, constantly pummeling the studio's work based on what they did with A Promised Neverland is completely unjustified. You're not reviewing this anime, you're complaining about the bad job they did with another show by throwing baseless insults at them for this adaptation. This is honestly a terrible review.

@@Diego-zz1df CloverWorks is a notorious studio when it comes to messing up their adaptations. I was told by manga readers that the very first scene, the most egregious one, was done by CW, and it was. The other scenes, with characters shounensplaining what's going on the second after introducing a new facet to the mystery, could've been the mango or it could've been CW. It really doesn't matter which because the complaint is still valid. The video is my thoughts on the show thus far as an anime-only. I'm pointing out CWs biggest failure -- the one that I knew was done by them -- for most of the review. I do bring up the other scenes, but they weren't the main complaint, and I even add that one of the scenes -- the one in the most recent episode, 10, -- were done by the mango as well, but that doesn't change that the BIGGEST ONE was done by CW themselves.
Whether it's CW or the manga who's at fault for the quick explanations, it's a flaw either way which is my entire point. They do it with the soot, but I also mention that that's a poor example because it does linger before Kate decides to just tell the viewer/Emilico. For the most egregious one, the opening scene, that IS NOT how you generate interest in a mystery show. They spoil most of the bigger mystery -- that we've seen so far, anyway -- in the first few minutes because they think if you don't immediately know the answer to the mystery, you'll get bored and leave. That's not how that works. As an adaptation, they could've very easily switched scenes around and cut some unneeded content if they thought the first three episodes would end up too slow. What you DON'T do is, spoil the entire mystery and then proceed to adapt the show as if you hadn't.
And, no I'm not misunderstanding anything. If you show me Ed transforming into a Shadow it makes me think "hey maybe they whole goal is to create the perfect being by having a human base with soot powers." and that keeps me thinking if I'm right when it'd get revealed later as part of the larger plot. What you don't do is then proceed to explain that in the very beginning of the next episode whilst having the 3rd Floor Shadows explain literally everything you may have been thinking. That's not how a mystery work. You do not answer the questions people may have all at once, because, even if they're smaller pieces of the larger mystery, it's not hard to figure out that larger mystery when you've already explained to me how everything works. Odd Taxi is how you do a proper mystery. You don't directly answer it -- yet anyway -- and instead keep leaving all the pieces there to keep the viewer guessing and theory crafting. That generates interest in your MYSTERY show.
I already said the soot was a poor example in the video itself, yet you attached yourself to that one and none of the others. When they're made of soot and emit soot uncontrollably, it's p. obvious that it can be controlled. It's a poor example only because it lingers longer than anything else before they explain it, but if they had not said anything about it, I would never have been 100% certain that they can control the soot. But, because they did explain it came from their emotions, PLUS the spoiler from the few minutes before that, I had already figured out most of the mystery. That's not fun. When it introduced a new aspect -- Ed -- of the Shadows fusing with the humans AGAIN after the initial copy of their appearance, I was engaged in the mystery again, and then they just proceeded to immediately explain it. That's not to mention the horrible way that they choose to exposit the information in the later episodes, either. Particularly in episode 9 and 10.
I'm aware that this isn't solely a mystery show, that's why spoiling the mystery and doing it poorly in general didn't knock it down to like a 4. As said in the video, the moe, comedy, sol, and so on that they add in are good, and that's why the mystery -- whether it's handled horribly by CW or the mango being irrelevant -- being consistently ruined only dropped it by two points. It could've been a 9/10 but instead it's a 7/10. That's not inherently a bad thing.
And, no, I've seen every CloverWorks production. I'm shitting on them in general because they consistently always mess some important aspect up in all of their productions. Even WEP wasn't safe from that, it just wasn't ruined by it. Neverland is pretty horrible, but their work on Fate Apoc is arguably worse. In this video, I am complaining about WHAT THEY DID HERE and then I'm EQUATING IT TO HOW THEY'VE DONE SOMETHING SIMILAR IN OTHER PRODUCTIONS. This is very much still me pointing out the flaws of the adaptation/the show itself. I'm saying "it does this bad, and that's PROBABLY because of CW, and this is how it could do it better, but outside of that this is still a very good show." That's the entire video. It's v. simple. Not sure how you missed it. Perhaps you just don't like me bashing on the studio, and I'll admit that I COULD have done further research on what parts were actually a result of the mango and not CW, but then this wouldn't really have been a review / the thoughts of someone who's only seen the anime. Instead I made the video ASSUMING it was mostly CW, but also saying in the video that I was ASSUMING, so I was leaving myself open to be corrected, and I even correct myself near the end.
I even rewatched the video to see if maybe I messed up somewhere or was misremembering something, but no. I explain it p. succintly, and that ONLY thing I could have maybe changed was saying CW is "presumably" the one messing things up, but that wasn't my entire point anyway. It was that CW shows always have something holding them back whether it's directly the studios fault -- Fate GO Babylon -- or if its the source materials fault -- Fate Apoc --.
Either way, I do appreciate the constructive criticism even if you did miss the point on some bits -- e.g. focusing on WHO I was complaining about and not WHAT I was complaining about, for the most part anyway -- and the fact that you watched -- presumably -- the entire video and attempted discussion. I like discussion, but there's a lot of brain-lets out there who will just go "hurr durr it's a 10/10 what are you talking about", so congrats on not being one of them. I hope this cleared up any confusion / misunderstandings, but if not feel free to keep going.

@Faith L.U.Z I know exactly how much work goes into this and how much studios over work and underpay most parties involved, but you clearly have no idea about any of that. My criticisms were well founded. My MAIN POINT was that they spoiled the show in the first five minutes and, would you look at that, THE MANGA DOESN'T DO THAT. Yes, other points that I made were present in the manga as well, which means in those cases the manga has just as much blame on it, but it does not change the beginning and ending of the show, both of which were altered and ruined by CW because of they're inability to not fuck something up. They seemingly are not a fan of Season 2s, and that's why they ultimately deviated from the manga for its final two episodes.
This show is decent, a 7/10, like most CW shows. They're never anything more because the studio always finds a way to hold them back on a consistent basis. I never told anyone not to watch the show in the video, I even say that it's a good show in the title and elaborate that, hey, CW fucks it up but it's still a good watch.
I get that thinking must be hard for you, but take two minutes to formulate your own thoughts before saying stupid things because you didn't even watch the video. It just makes you look dumb. I don't want you to look dumb. :(

I think they mainly do it to get watchers more invested as there is a big difference between manga readers and anime watchers in my opinion. they probably had the thought that the teenagers and young adults watching this would need something to hook onto so they wouldn't get bored similar to how mainstream mystery shows would work on media. they aren't completely ruining it here just attempting to do what they have seen many other shows do, though I see where you are coming from as a manga reader but still. adapting manga into anime is extremely hard especially when they kinda have to change the demographic so that people who "turn off their brains" while watching anime can still enjoy, and even if you really want a plot that isn't as fast-paced then you can read the manga. there is nothing wrong with setting up the clues like this it's just what they think will work, I mean imagine the anime was perfectly adapted then take all the consumerism and demographics into it. would the anime do as well like that? idk maybe it's just best to enjoy them separately, maybe I'm just a little stupid when it comes to mystery shows cos wonder egg priority confused the hell out of me on my first watch lol

The author helped write the scripts, but it's the studios decision how to animate and adapt that, how to direct it, and whether to include it or not. The author for Biscuit Hammer also wrote the scripts for its anime, yet they didn't include anything he wrote. Same for Kubo and the 4th Bleach movie. Author being on staff doesn't mean much because the studio has the final say of how it turns out. From what I saw of the manga, the author has that bad habit of giving way too much exposition without letting you think about the mystery too, but they're not the ones who spoiled the mystery in the first five minutes and then chose to adapt the remaining episodes like they hadn't done so, complete with the small clues from the manga leading up to that already spoiled reveal and all.

I really want to re-visit this anime once season 2 is finished since I kinda feel like season 1 was a part 1 of the show and depends on how season 2 will be I hope it'll feel in the gaps as a part 2 for on-show if you get what I mean like season one was just half of the story it felt to me. That is why I am unsure of it.
I was disappointed with season 2 of Promised Neverland (Spoilers)... they very easily could've avoided screwing it up with a season 3 instead of adding that crap at the ending and just ending at the frekaing portal! They do reveal alot of things however most of ur examples aren't really great. This show is a mystery show but it doesn't mean each event is supposed to be a clue to solve. Like with Edward you it wasn't a detail that needed to be a mystery it just needed to be known. If they set it up as a mystery it would kinda be a bad reveal. Like oh why does he want to get kate? Oh just because she is the easiest target. It wouldn't be satisfying. Same with a few other examples. It is like promise neverland except at a slower pace and with different enemies and risk. While Isabella new about Emma rebelling the House doesn't exactly know it's little more than a gues for them.

I read the manga and I'm satisfied with from what I can see. Sure, episode 1 had made it a bit of a spoilish but I might have skipped that part while watching but the one I could disagree upon but at the same time it was cleared up by the author is the ending. The ending became an original adaptation that is where things just went wrong. The author though did explain this in her tweet that she wasn't sure if she was gonna get a season 2 or if it was confirmed so she had to make something up for cloverworks because I guess they are going to the route of No Game No Life, no next season. I have never watched Promise NeverLand but I heard the rumors that the animation team was horrid and most of the animation team went to Shadows House(?) Would I watch another anime adapted by CloverWorks? No. Would I watch Shadows House Season 2 if it comes out? Sure, if the author is directing the story.
I just believe Cloverworks needs to do better in whatever anime they decide to adapt and be consistent about it.

As a manga reader i have to say, what in the fuck are you talking about? If anything, its impressive they were able to give the show an original ending, while also ensuring it could still pick up where it left off from the manga in case they get a second season. And besides the changes in the sequence of events, in what way were character personalities butchered? The practically the same from the manga.

@@coded321 Do you really think Kate would be so reckless to sneak off to tell John the message herself? She had originally decided on the secret letter even before she knew about the adults’ soot powers. Plus, they didn’t show how John was influenced by Shaun. That in of itself shoots holes in the plot. They also completely ignored how long it took for the soot coffee to wear off in regards to the other children. There are other examples, but I think you get my point.

    • @coded321
      @coded321 3 роки тому +6

@@_Iscream for starters, Emilio got kidnapped, not exactly a situation that would allow kate the to find a way to sneak off a message to john, and wait for a favorable reply. Second, its Emilico. There's no risk that would have stopped Kate from saving her. There was no need to show how shaun influenced John, since the end result was John beating the brainwashing out of him. Yes they rearranged the plot a bit and cut some minor scenes, but overall the final episodes have little to no impact on the overall story. Those plotholes you mention are small details that can easily be written over and fixed in season 2, if this show gets one. And despite all the changes, the characters are still, at their core, the same from the manga. And even though it took longer for the brainwashing to wear off in the manga, Kate still found ways to get the others to cooperate with her despite that.
Lastly, these are changes made by the author themself, to give the anime a proper conclusion in case it doesn't get a second season. The author also assured they could easily account for and fill in any plotholes if the show does get another season.

@@coded321 They needed to show the influence to show both how it worked and John being able to overcome it. They also cut some major scenes, like with the hooded figure and Rosemary. Also, Edward was more cautious in the manga- he would never had kidnapped Emilico unless he had proof of Kate’s treachery. Finally.... THEY LEFT THE MANOR AT THE END. There’s really no way to connect it to the manga in a natural way anymore.

Episode 1 was pretty in the beginning, and some later episodes like 3 are ruined from the change in 1, and the constant explanation of things that shouldn't be explained ruin the garden maze arc. I'd give it a 7/10, but then the filler shit in 10-13 happens so 6/10.
