A port so bad it made me an anti-monarchist,
Well not really but I thought up that tagline and I had to nflict it on others.
Appreciated
You should be anti monarchy
People:"The hero we need?"
Dolphin:"Yes, I am!"
This port seems so janky and broken that the only way to make a functional PC port would be to scrap the whole project and recreate the whole game by scratch.
No game with an official PC port should have the definitive way to play the game be emulation.
I have in fact resurrected my old Wii from deep storage to play this game. This and Mario and Sonic at the 2012 Olympic Games.
I love the utter contrast between those two games, wow
Dude you killed it AS USUAL. Enjoyed THOROUGHLY and it's great to see you upload again! This may actually be your best video so far in terms of editing, you just keep getting better 😭 Keep it going dweight we love you and as usual take your time with videos, it's okay, we LKS fans are patient. ❤
(Good luck with the NLKS vid 🙌)
Thank you man!!
This video being an inherently negative topic is what held its production back - it’s just hard to motivate myself to complain about stuff. So, I won’t be doing NLKS next (as originally planned) for my own sake. Next video Will be a massive deep dive into a really cool part of LKS most people don’t know much about
Just started replaying lks on wii this semester and discovered your channel! Had no idea there was such a dedicated community for one of my favorite childhood games!!!
Ahh perfect! That's exactly why I make the effort to do these at all!
I hope these videos help you appreciate the game even more! (I recommend the one on decoding runes, personally!)
Me too ! I thought that this game was forgotten by all ! Glad to see some people discover again this hidden gem from the Wii.
You've done it Mr. Deadweightlks, you've done your duty and can finally throw away this awful port. Be free.
Seriously though this is an absolute BANGER of a video, your commentary is improving with every upload!
That is so heartbreaking. Every time I see it on sale on Steam, I get nostalgia over how fun the game was on the Wii. And unlike something like Chrono Trigger, emulators aren't yet capable of matching the console version. Fingers crossed a better port comes along!
Sounds like you're better off just emulating it with Dolphin. It tends to do Gamecube/Wii games pretty flawlessly.
I have a "wii game that is really good to the point of being the best on the console despite most people ignoring it" game myself, it's called rabbids go home and it is the most life changing game I have ever played
Yeah it was such a fun game I was actually surprised how much I enjoyed it when I was younger
13:10 the Bands called Swimmingpoo1 the song in the theatre is called Bittersweet. Had too mention it beacuse i dont want misinformation to spread. And also beacuse theyre music is great.
DANG you’re right! I’ve gotten that right every other time I’ve mentioned them too, including that short. That was a complete whoopsie on my part.
And yeah their music slaps, I love their stuff.
so what you're saying is spend 5 bucks on the game on sale then play it however i want on dolpin?
Wonderful video as always, your editing just keeps getting better and better and my good sire, you are deeply humorous and sharp-witted as usual. Congratulations!
Want to add this as well that I didn't get far in the port at all cause my save would just delete itself, EVERY TIME, I had no clue how to fix it and just gave up and refunded the game before the 2 hour mark
you won cause I was taking a nap and didn't realize the 5 of us we're competing for the title again....
catch you next year at the annual King of the Little King's Story Story brawl!
ive been praying at least once a week for a fan patch to turn up for this thing, i wanna believe someone has the skill for it so i can replay one of my faves without digging out the wii.
There’s a lot of restoration that would have to be done, such as the missing menu animations being redone, and understanding of LKS’s code is pretty young at the moment. Even Xseed (American publishers for Marvelous) said in the blog I showed they hoped for some fan mods to bolster the port, but as it stands it’s just a lot of work and not a lot of hands to do it
One must wonder what it was like before the patch...
I never played it, but weirdly I think some things like the loading fog were still intact pre-patch, so…?
I had a lot of fun with this game (on Wii), I'm surprised it got a PC Port.... and in 2016???? I must have subconsciously forgot about it, for good reason.
I'm glad the algorithm recommended this video to me.
Ramen.
Ramen. Glad you found this man! If you enjoyed the Wii version, then there’s plenty of other videos I’ve done on that game for ya!
One of my great shames in life is that I never got to the end of Little King's Story. I think I got stuck on the mountain beard boss?
Ooo you’re close! Remember: you can change the game’s difficulty mid-playthrough. I’d recommend finishing off that last little bit, it’s worth it
I want to forget New Little Kings Story…
I often do too
I've recently played through the PC port and by god the amount of times it either crashed on me or I had to lock it at 30fps to get through boss mechanics is insane
I will say this the option to remove bloom in the lks launcher does wonders to my eyesight
The bloom could have aged better
@@DeadweightLKS Just like with the overlord games it seems
Great video Dweight! ❤ Makes me wonder how I managed to play through it till the end somewhat successfully hahaha
I came close to asking to use this one clip of yours where you jump from a random crash 😂
Hahaha, it did happen a couple of times 😂 @@DeadweightLKS
sounds like a normal triple A title released today
Too real
@3:57 - this isn’t a misspelling, it’s just one of two ways her name could be written in English. し is either represented by shi or si, similar to the L/R thing with characters like らra/la
Yup yup, it’s a legal Romanisation, but it’s not the way the localisation spells her name. This suggests the Japanese team programmed the Steam doodads in, when the localisation should have at least checked those to see if they were correct
Those Ports say the DARNDEST of things! - A Message left for the PC port of LKS and Sonic Adventure DX.
I didn't even know it was that bad. I saw the errors here and there, but not to this extent. I still own my Wii copy, and love the game. I figured I'd give a shot on steam to see how it went and I've gotten a good distance in the game without too many issues. I'm sorry to hear everybody was having such a rough time with it because I love the game
@@proghost1430 I mean hey if you don’t notice them, then that’s probably the best result. Nobody wants to dislike this port after all, the game is incredible
I recently bought a Wii online just so I could relive my childhood and actually beat this game since I was too young and inexperienced to beat it.
Oo you’re in for a treat!
I’m not joking when I say all the spoilery stuff I avoid talking about in videos are my favourite parts. Enjoy it!
Why didn't you just emulate and buy official controllers?
Thank you for also reminding the PC port players of the nightmare that is mountain boss fight as the GOG forums states holding the W and S key will hold you and your minions in the hole but if your playing on a busted keyboard GOOD LUCK 😈
I actually did play this game, and still have it on Wii. It was a really solid game and a solid portion of my childhood
Glad to hear it!! I hope the other videos I do on this game will be more up your alley then
I played this game on the Wii when I was very young, probably around 10, I loved it, but was unable to beat the game (skill issue). So recently I made it my mission to complete it. After some research I decided I would risk playing the port, because I didn't want to risk downloading viruses with an emulator. Watching this video was hilarious, as every glitch you mentioned brought back a memory of frustration. The most annoying glitch not mentioned though was sound, every time I loaded the game up, there was about a 25% chance I would have no sound. The fix for this was going offline on steam (Idk why this worked) where I would have about a 90% chance of getting sound. Also the glitch in the Long Sauvage boss battle with the hideouts not working was hell. It took me an hour to figure out a strategy to get through the insta kill segment, and I think the best I could do was 27/30 soldiers surviving. I also had major frustrations with the egg boss, where one riddle required me to match a voice line to a citizen, however the original voice line would not play. So I had to repeat the boss until I got a lucky guess. In the end though, I would do it all again, the nostalgia and feeling of beating the game my younger self never could was all worth it. (Also it took me around 10 minutes to figure out that I had to press enter on the start screen to get the game to start lmao, kept on clicking with the mouse and restarting the game thinking the port was bugged). 10/10 video I experienced almost every bug mentioned.
Amazing!! Glad that you could beat the game!! And above all, I’m glad that your time playing it wasn’t ruined by the port doing its thing. That’s always what I fear most. Good job!
And now that you’ve beaten it, I hope that the content I’m doing on this channel will mean more to you!
I recall seeing this game next to Xenoblade Chronicles at a store that didn't usually sell games. Something told me that I would never get either again, so I asked my mom to get this one for the wii, thinking I might get Chronicles later (I did. MUCH later). It was extremely unique and I don't regret getting this instead.
Heck yeah!
@@DeadweightLKS JUMBO CHAMPLOON.
Also I discovered the version of this game on the PSVITA. *takes deep breath*
@@BeeWaifu I recently streamed that vita game for about 7 hours, you can find those two parts on the channel if you want to see me dunk on it
@@DeadweightLKS I'd be glad to. Really glad they dumped the fun, storyboard aesthetic for the generic anime approach.
I was excited to hear this port because more people could fall in love with this game but did not realize it had so many problems.
Corobo in Super Smash Bros. Not sure if I would want him in but I be down for the music.
As probably the number 2 most knowledgeable LKS person Yeah it really kinda sucks that this game never got the love it deserved but that seems to go with most of XSEED's published titles
Oh shoot, you like LKS a lot? If you haven’t already, would you like the join the rest of us the discord server? It’s in the channel description. Either way, I hope you’re enjoying the channel
i never use it, but my wii stays on my desk and i gave it a lil tickle at 0:18 ; )
Ooh, yeah, I wonder if a Switch or Switch-successor port would be doable. Certainly control-wise; I'd worked out one time how that might work if they did it, but that's on a different laptop.
I can probably explain "Sizuka" as an artifact of the two different kinds of romaji. For those not in the know, there's the romaji that we use, that uses full consonant diphthongs as needed so we English-speakers know how to read that part of the name, and there's the romaji that Japanese people are officially taught, which insists on two letters per character at most, so they say "si" where we would say "shi". (This is also why games published by Natsume sometimes have a version of the logo that says "Natume", instead.)
Yeah! I also came up with a switch control scheme sometime, it’s on the r/Corobo Reddit somewhere
Also yeah, I saw Sizuka and realised exactly that - the trading cards must have been created by Japanese speakers with no localisers, so they romanised her name alternatively to its official spelling
off topic, but it's fun how that "funeral" song that play at around 14:40 is actually a music box version of Adagio. Keeping up tradition of that song being EVERYWHERE.
Also I wonder how bad the Ps Vita version is
If you haven't played LKS, the entire soundtrack is comprised of remixes of classical music!! I'd recommend "Primetime Kingdom" and "Vs. Onii King" for some good examples. I even did a video a few years ago covering a mystery surrounding that named DVSP
We'll get around to explaining the Vita version... eventually
at least they ported the right version, and not the weird vita version with the totally different art style
BASED. BASED COMMENT. GOATED BEHAVIOUR 🔥
Man I loved this game as a kid, even if I could only ever get past the Onii King.
Hey, I said I loved it, not that I was good at it.
Hey I'm glad you enjoyed it. And while there's no pressure, there's also no reason not to revisit it as an adult and see what the rest of the game has to offer. It gets better with each boss!
@@DeadweightLKS I did actually buy the steam version to play it again, and honestly it was pretty good despite all the issues.
A very informative video. I'm glad I still have my wii version.
I want more games like little kings story and that wiiware final fantasy game (my life as a king)!!!
and yes, a switch port
Biggest glow up in a mic I’ve ever heard
Okay so, I don’t actually know why. The other videos were recorded in audacity with very basic filters on, and no matter how much adjusting I did, the mic just stayed kind of awful. For this one, I just gave up and recorded straight into OBS with no adjustments, and… it’s by far the best audio I’ve ever had 😭
That abrupt ending 😆
NLKS Jumpscare
Not only did I play it on Wii, I played it on PC.
Legend, mad respect
I really hope there's going to be a Fan Patch of sorts, which patches the major bugs and gives the game it's iconic graphics. This game really deserves better.
In the meantime, better learn to adjust and set up the emulator.
That opening... Haha... yeah you got me. I stopped after a while because I... I dunno. I beat the first boss but I felt kinda aimless. Any tips for a first playthrough? (Edit: To be clear, I'm playing the Wii version)
Hey, thanks for being honest. I’m glad you liked the joke. I do want to do a video on exactly that, tips for new players, but since it’ll probably be a while before that point, here’s a few to get you started.
- After the first boss, Onii King, the game truly begins. It opens up. There’s a lot fewer cutscenes for a long while. The Sunflower Plains are supposed to be a test of your progress - you could technically go through them with the exact build you went into the Onii King with and come out the other side, but there are about 4 new guardians to fight and 4 jobs to unlock which can drastically change your time going through. So don’t be afraid to explore elsewhere and build yourself up before going for the main objective
- It’s okay NOT to go through an area in one go! In fact, it’s better to go to a new area, loot it, leave before you get to its end, then spend that money on new power ups and stuff before going back and doing the end of it. Again, Sunflower Plains specifically is just too much to do in one go instead of several smaller bites
- Small gameplay tips. Tax collecting often gives rewards like weapons and armour, or art pieces that you can exchange for weapons and armour in the forest. You can equip these under Liam’s Treasure Room. Digging jobs can aid building after the main scaffolding has gone up. If you see a suspicious spot, try throwing a citizen at it: it might be a bonus invisible hole.
- It sounds too unbelievable to be real, but the game’s identity doesn’t truly show itself off until the second boss. Before that point the areas you explore and opponents you fight are standard fantasy fare, nothing special, which actually doesn’t show off the game’s true identity particularly well, which I’d say starts after sunflower plains. That’s where things get… interesting ;)
Hope that’s at least some motivation to see a little further!
@@DeadweightLKS Alright. I'll give it a second shot. I have to admit, my passing interest in this game as a Pikmin fan has now passed. The only thing motivating me to continue the game is you. Your passion for this game makes me want to finish it. That's really something special. As someone who also loves some niche games with all my heart, like Katamari Damacy, or The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky, or LIVE A LIVE, I know how important it is to stand for your less popular cult hits that changed your life. So I just want you to know, your passion and love is not lost on me. This one's for you, my friend. がんばって!
@@JayMonoto You’re filling me with joy. That’s heartwarming to hear! Yes, this game is NOT a Pikmin game. The basic controls of the main character can unfortunately mislead people into thinking that, but the goals, writing and structure of the game makes it more akin to a quirky adventure game. And yes, it’s a cult work like those other games you mentioned. I also love the Pikmin games but for entirely different reasons. The reasons I love LKS are much more similar to the reasons I love, for example, Deltarune or Majora’s Mask.
Never heard of this game. Had to sub, this channel is funny af.
That means a lot! Thank you!
@@DeadweightLKS np dawg. Keep up the good work!
Man, what a shame. I missed LKS when it originally released on Wii, and recently bought it on PC figuring I'd finally experience it.
Shoddy port jobs like this are just so frustrating. I'm not asking for models to be redone, or any other kind of insane tweaks, but can't the games just work properly without graphical or system glitches? Shit like this is just doing a total disservice to original developers.
Has nobody attempted to restore the game past Durantes’ patch? I have experience in both scripting and modelling and would like to atleast try to restore the port
This game‘s community only really began a few years ago, and is still quite small, so the number of people within the space who could decipher a custom engine Wii game is quite slim
There’s also so much to restore and so little demand that I think it just doesn’t appeal to many people to try, as cool as it might be
I love that intro lol
@@Spine223 Thank you very much!
Gosh, and I thought my PC was just too old and couldn't handle the game =O
my god, this port was a travesty
Great video! Was curious what this even was and came out knowing a lot about the game :D probably won’t be trying this one out for a while but glad I know what this is HAHA gonna dust off my Wii to protect it from the vicious “Timmys” looking to eat all the nunchucks in the world 😂
Hey it’s great that you watched something outside of your comfort zone! I have a bunch more videos on this game to check out if you wanna learn even more about it - I didn’t even think THIS video could be somebody’s introduction to LKS as a whole 😂
No! I did play it and I loved it! It was my favorite game on the Wii. I wasn't aware of a port. (Continues watching video)
That’s what I love to hear!!
@@DeadweightLKSI finished the video. That's quite sad about the port. Absolute bummer. I'd love more people to get a chance to enjoy it. And.... and it would be a good one to randomize... *plots in Archipelago*
I'm ready to march into the headquarters and demand a better port, i dont care if i just barely learned this game existed--
I like your spirit
Damn at this point i might bin of my LKS port playthrough halfway and get the wii down from out the loft😂
Really want a video dissecting new little king’s story because there is barely any content or posts about it on the internet besides the obvious artstyle change. It’s narratively supposed to be like a sequel but also a reboot. Not to mention gameplay wise how does it compare? Don’t think I’ve ever actually seen gameplay further than the Onii King.
Story wise, it's one of the worst games I've ever played
Gameplay wise, it just doesn't really work or function because it's just throwing mechanics onto an existing product
I'd love to share full thoughts on it, but after doing a thorough explanation of this poor version of the game (PC port) I want a break from that kind of video before I do the NLKS episode, which has been in preproduction for years - stay tuned for it. For the time being, I have something really cool for the next LKS video!
@@DeadweightLKSlooking forward to it
I started replaying LKS recently cause I never beat it as a kid. So glad I still have my wii copy, it's a shame the port is SO BAD. Maybe emulation can save it
This game was unbelievably difficult. Considering it’s aimed at children.
@@Getwellcuts true
Having just finished, like 20 minutes ago finished, recording a Let's Play of the PC version I can say that it does have some problems. But it's far from unplayable. The only major issues I had were...
The game not loading saves - easy but annoying to fix.
The game audio not always loading - requires restarts.
The cutscene audio being much louder than the game audio - not much to do about that.
Slight graphical issues.
The game also crashed on me one time.
Other than that it really was fine. It's not a 1/5. No way. It's not flawless of course, but if you don't mind having to restart the game every so often when you load it it's not that bad. Well worth the price they're asking for it on Steam.
Honestly id say nothing would be better then playing this version. If you cant enjoy the game beacuse the game refuses too work then youre wasting youre time playing it too begin with. And you should instead play a better version that actually works well or another game thats stable.
OH MY GOD I FUCKING LOVE THIS GAME.

@@DeadweightLKS I absolutely loved that game as a kid
Some guy on twitter brought me here
I bought this on Wii Day 1.

Oh yeah I played New Little King Story on the Vita. I had a lingering feeling that I was playing the worst possible version of an otherwise excellent game.
There was one boss where you have a time limit and you need to climb a mountain while also getting past traps with some ridiculous timing required to succeed. The persistent slowdown present throughout the game was annoying but that place really really make it unbearable and it was impossible for me to complete it due to timing required.
I should mention I play a lot of old console games so slowdown and lag are not a definitive dealbreaker if the game is interesting or fun but New Little King Story was pure disappointment.
I also could swear the time limit and the slowdown weren't synched up like they are in most japanese games (where lag also causes the in game time to slow down cause everything is tied to framerate), but I don't have hard proof on that.
And this is not even getting into the "updated" generic ass animu artwork and the fact that you can give your units different equipment that changes their looks. Equipment changing looks would have been great if not for the fact it makes it impossible to tell what unit type it is once they are dressed, cause a female farmer wearing a swimsuit (yes generic animu schoolgilr swimsuit), looks the same as a female knight wearing a swimsuit!?!?! In all screenshots I saw of the original(I have yet to play it) I could clearly see that every unit type has a distinctive looking oversized head for the sake of visual clarity and adding equipment that ruins that is just unimaginably dumb. I should mention that unless you dress them up their stats lag too far behind to be useful so it's necesairly evil in New Little King Story...
YES. Okay I’m glad you figured that out about NLKS because it shows that the game isn’t just bad to me because I’m a blind fan. It’s bad anyway. Yeah, that mountain boss doesn’t have slowdown in the original, and yeah the equipment system isn’t nearly as all-or-nothing and doesn’t change appearances for that EXACT reason.
@@DeadweightLKS I should play the wii version soon I liked other games made by Cing and love de lic (like Another Code R, Rule of Rose, Chulip & Glass Rose)even if they weren't all perfect they are very memorable.
@@nikodem123asdf That’s a good wat to put it. Although, LKS likely plays a lot better than Chulip and Rule of Rose
@@DeadweightLKS Yeah it was the only non-adventure game made by Cing, such a shame they closed shortly after LKS came out.
@@DeadweightLKS Random little observation. the design of the prince in the cutscenes as well as a lot of the characters is very similar to the designs in Graffiti Kingdom for PS2.
Not sure if there's any connection there but I wouldn't be surprised if there was, that game is wildly imaginative gameplay wise(cause you can draw your own character as a 3D model and the way you draw them influences their abilities and Physics and such) and has some of the most hilariously self aware plot & characters.

Y'arr
Except the VITA port actually works 100% better than the Pc port.
@@rovestyakutorov601 Vita? That one is way worse 😅
@@DeadweightLKS Are you also not including the DLC Jobs Or just complaining about the frame rate? Because my entireplay through the Vita version was crashless, compared to the Steam release. No save issues, and the story is updated for the vita release.
@@rovestyakutorov601 No crashes sure. But the story in the vita version is terrible and simplified, the framerate is miserable, the new mechanics make the game convoluted, brainless and boring, the art style is horribly inconsistent and the game just has no soul. Even if on a technical level it’s not as broken, it’s just not Little King’s Story at all
@@DeadweightLKS So you're planning to do a vid on these changes and compare?
the psp vita is the best version. it has extra content, better graphics, and does run at 60.
Far from it, actually!
Honestly it might as well be more of a total conversion mod rather then a version almost none of the original game is in there
The extra content doesn’t add anything. The graphics are not better - they’re a totally different art style and one that feels more generic and overdone. The game is still 30fps, but the game has horrendous amounts of lag that can’t even be fixed by modified vitas. No need to pretend it’s a good game when it’s very bad!
I Will say this was very informative, I have heard the PC port was bad but at times been very tempted to see for myself
But luckily used "alternative means 🐬" to play the Wii Version
But I didn't know it was this bad, it saddens me a bit that its not truly fixed but not much can be done about it I guess
(Also a bit off track, at 3:30 I had no idea u can send a citizen down that hole/well of sorts, the more stuff I learn about this game man 🥲)
