  • The Great Langdale valley in England's Lake District is a great starting point for some classic Lakeland walks. Previously, we have done the Langdale Pikes, but today Neil heads out of the Old Dungeon Ghyll to climb three Wainwrights: Pike O'Blisco, Cold Pike and the famous Crinkle Crags (where he pays a visit to the Bad Step), at the head of the valley.
It's about an 8 mile walk, and around 3,230 ft or 985 m of ascent, and the weather on the top was... wet... Neil is an experienced hill-walker, and has climbed Crinkle Crags many times, but you should always be careful when walking; especially so in cloudy or misty conditions, and particularly on unfamiliar hills and paths. Always keep an eye on the weather, have (and know how to use) an OS map and compass, and make sure your navigational skills are up to finding your way in challenging conditions.
Even though the lockdown has lifted, please continue to follow the Lake District National Park Authority guidance to Respect. Protect. Enjoy! More details can be found here: www.lakedistrict.gov.uk/visiting/countryside-code

Really enjoying the films. Its a nice treat discovering a channel like this with a substantial back catalogue featuring walks you've done and walks you've yet to do. Great work

And so now I watched it all, I did Bow Fell, it was much better weather or me, I did all the 5 crinkles too, I must admire you for doing this alone in such poor conditions, I used to live in Glossop, and one sunday I got lost in the mist on Mam Tor, I was terrified, and it still stays with me, so Bravo for the walk, by the way the films are brilliant.

I am here in Austin, TX wishing I could be back walking in the Lake District. Your videos are wonderful. Thank you for all the footage of the trail, the sheep and the weather.

The crinkles is a tough climb, approx 8 miles from the National trust car park.

A great mini film. Thank you for taking the time to put it all together. Hoping to be on that route this week.

Well, we made it up there. Drizzle for a bit, overcast but the cloudbase was fairly high with the sun putting an appearance in after lunch. Continued to Bowfell, Esk Pike and Allen Crags before the long return to Dungeon Ghyll. 14.4 miles overall.

Hello Neil! Your wonderful films sustain us between our trips to the Lakes. I'm curious why you chose not to pair a climb to Bowfell with the Crinkle Crags. We are torn between following your route or doing a Bowfell / Crinkles combo. Thank you!

Thank you! Didn't add on Bowfell, this time, simply because of the weather, and the long plod over to Cold Pike. I've done it the other way round, before - Bowfell, then Crinkle Crags (although watch out for the bad step!). A lot depends on the weather, of course! All the best

@@LakeDistrictFilms thanks for making me aware of the long plod to Cold Pike. Mr. Wainwright does give caution about the weather, and it seems heading North on the crinkles is best to avoid the sudden and surprising drop of the bad step. But what do I know? :)

We will be coming to the area soon. We appreciate seeing the terrain so we can plan safely. What map are you featuring in your videos, please? What a thrill to observe your hikes, thank you!

Great walk and impressive wayfinding in those conditions. Never see you refer to a gps, map or even a guide book...presumably you're not just winging it? Atb.

Thanks, Russell. No, not winging it, and always have a map. I’ve done all the Wainwrights before, so have some knowledge of the route, but also use GPS and an OS map (and tend to do quite a bit of guidebook prep before heading out). Thanks again!

Really enjoyed following along this great walk. Very atmospheric, you did well to keep finding the path, especially with your glasses off!! Hope to try some of this in sept when we finally get back. Regards, Ashley
