Show Up and Start: The Art and Life of Dorothy Ramsay - coming soon
Film festival Official Selection: RS FilmFest 2024, New York Film and Actor Awards 2024.
Documentary to be screened at 4 pm on 2 November 2024 at Keswick Alhambra Cinema, followed by Q&A. Tickets and more information here: keswickalhambra.co.uk/KeswickAlhambra.dll/WhatsOn?f=594647
"Show Up and Start" is an insightful documentary that delves into the vibrant life and evocative work of Dorothy Ramsay, a Lake District-based artist. The film charts Ramsay’s journey from her postwar childhood in the northeast of England, through her formative years studying at the Camberwell School of Art in London, to her diverse experiences as a weaver and therapist, before ultimately returning to her true passion as a full-time artist.
The documentary’s title, "Show Up and Start," encapsulates Ramsay's motivating artistic philosophy, emphasising the importance of consistent effort in the creative process. The film offers not just a glimpse into her creative world but also serves as a reminder that inspiration comes from dedication and perseverance.
Alongside the interviews with Ramsay, and younger artists who have been motivated and inspired by her, are breathtaking shots of the landscape of the English Lake District - a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Enhancing the film’s atmosphere is the sound and music from Shelley Roden, an award-winning foley artist at Skywalker Sound, and Jeffrey Roden, an acclaimed US composer. Their contributions underscore the emotional depth of Ramsay’s story, making "Show Up and Start" a compelling watch for anyone interested in the interaction between life and art.

Lake District Walks | Walking the Wainwrights | Low Fell and Fellbarrow - Buttermere valley view!

On an unexpectly lovely Sunday evening, Neil heads out from Thackthwaite in the north west of the Engigh Lake District, to visit two low Wainwright hills - Low Fell and Fellbarrow. Along the way, there is a song thrush, endless sheep, a spectacular view south over the whole Buttermere valley and west and north to the Irish Sea and Solway Firth, across the Cumberland plain. End of March 2024, on a bright spring morning, Neil tackles the sixth-smallest Wainwright, High Rigg, beside St John's in the Vale, via Tewet Tarn and Low Rigg, returning via the epic Castlerigg Stone Circle. It's a 6.5 mile circular route, of around 1,250 ft ascent and descent, with spectacular views of Blencathra, Skiddaw, Helvellyn and Bleaberry Fell. On the way, he makes friends with ponies...

Mid-February 2024, Neil heads out from beside the River Duddon, through Hardknott Forest (and a red squirrel encounter) and up Harter Fell. It's a steep ascent (Wainwright recommended the route from neighbouring Eskdale), but the views are stunning, particularly in the snow. Lake District Walks | A Circuit of Haweswater - flooded Mardale, Withnail and I film location

On a gloriously sunny day in mid-November 2023, Neil visits the epic Haweswater Reservoir, to the west of the Lake District. There, he explores the beautiful autumnal scenery and dark past of a vanished community - uprooted by the flooding of their homes in 1935, and finds the location of an iconic scene from Withnail and I (Dir. Bruce Robinson, 1987). The tree he refers to is not, as he guesse...

Mid-October 2023, and Neil heads out of Coniston in the English Lake District on a clear, bright, but cold morning, up to Coppermines Valley, via the neglected gem of a ridge walk to Black Sails to Wetherlam. This Black Sails is not to be confused with Black Sail Youth Hostel or the Black Sail Pass, both of which are over towards Buttermere/Ennerdale. Presumably both share the same derivation, ...

    Some of that Base Brown stuff looks a bit sketchy for doddery old buggers like me and the Mrs. Is it as questionable as it looks? I absolutely hate turning back defeated by my faint heartedness.

    • @LakeDistrictFilms
      @LakeDistrictFilms 23 дні тому

      The hardest bit about Base Brown is probably route-finding - it's steep, but not terribly scrambly (other than the first little section by the beck) - you just have to pick your way through a few false leads around the Hanging Stone, before you get to the final ascent. Hopefully the film gives a clear idea of how to get round it! Good luck!

    Ooooh! Not too sure about that descent from Fleetwith Pike! If i did it in reverse would the descent from Haystacks be better or worse?

    • @LakeDistrictFilms
      @LakeDistrictFilms Місяць тому

      A lot of people seem to be against the Fleetwith descent, and it is a little exposed in places, but I found it OK. The ascent is comparatively popular, and the descent off Haystacks, although steep in places is probably easier because each steep section is relatively short, and the walk down from Scarth Gap Pass to Buttermere is straightforward. Hope that helps!

    How long does the circular walk take roughly? Which is the best way to walk round to get the best evening light views?

    • @LakeDistrictFilms
      @LakeDistrictFilms Місяць тому

      Hello! Depending on your speed, it’s about a 1-2 hour walk. If you’re doing an evening walk, personally I’d walk it anti-clockwise, because the setting Sun reflects on the lake, beautifully. Hope you have a great walk!

  • @kahlospirit24

    • @LakeDistrictFilms
      @LakeDistrictFilms Місяць тому

      I’ve never driven a motor home, so not sure if it would make it. If it’s any help, the busses drive over the pass, so if it’s just a matter of size, I think you should be OK! There are a couple of campsites in Buttermere itself (I think), and other good ones in Borrowdale - I’d recommend the one in Grange, which is basic, but lovely.

    Brilliant video. I’ve been walking the Wasdale fells with my family (partner and x 2 kids). We’ve done, Lingmell, Scafell and scafell pike, great gable and Kirk fell. Pillar is next for us. It looks a bit hairy at the top! How dangerous /narrow is the high ridge to the summit? Also how’s the descent from red pike. The music makes it all feel like a walk in the park! But I’m sure it isn’t at all! Your dogs do great! Thanks for such a useful video! 🙏

    • @LakeDistrictFilms
      @LakeDistrictFilms Місяць тому

      Thank you! It’s been a few years, but my recollection is that the path op to Pillar is reasonably straightforward and not exposed. The ridge up towards Little Scoat Fell from Wind Gap is a bit more scramble, but also not too exposed. The descent down Dorehead Screes is definitely steep and not enormously fun… the alternative way off is following the path to the west of Yewbarrow, which is fairly gentle, but significantly adds to the length of the walk, with a longish plod back up the road/Mosesale Beck back to Wasdale Head. It’s a great walk, all in all, but inevitably a long day! Hope that helps.

    • @LakeDistrictFilms
      @LakeDistrictFilms 2 місяці тому

      The "classic" way up Skiddaw is probably from the car park/gate by Latrigg - it's not terribly steep, but it is long, and some find it a little boring. Great views back over Keswick and Derwentwater, though, so definitely not to be sniffed at! Alternatively, you could reverse the end of this walk, and go up via Bakestall, get to the top and go back, but that's also quite a long walk... Hope that's of some help - on a good day, any way up Skiddaw is worth the effort!

    I have unfinished business with this Horseshoe. I attempted a solo hike on 22nd July 2023, My grandpa had passed away the day before after suffering quite severely with Dementia in his last few weeks. I needed time to myself the following day to let it all sink in. Getting out on the fells is my way of resetting myself mentally and I was training fr the national 3 peaks challenge I had coming up in the September so I wanted to test myself. I started at 7:30 and the weather was wet with zero wind, 100meters up grizedale and I could only see 5-10 meters around me due to the mist. Summited Grizedale and literally stood there for five mins…….. couldn’t hear anything, no wind at all, no noise other than my breathing, it was pretty surreal to be honest. Carried onto Crag hill, soon as I got up to the bottom of that all hell broke loose, weather went crazy, was getting blown over by the wind and I tripped over a rock and I slid down towards the valley for about 10 meters however that could’ve been more or less, happened quickly, I smashed my ankle on another rock and stopped. I hadn’t seen a single sole throughout the hike and still couldn’t see anymore than 10-15 meters max in all directions. Self preservation kicked in and I went straight down literally on my arse until I reached the path. I’m going back there to finish what I started. The weather can change instantly up on the fells.

    Watched this video again today as it brought back happy memories of when i did most of this route over fifty years ago.I did an Outward Bound course at Ulswater,.We climbed Helvelyn from most directions but this route still sticks in my mind.Thanks for taking me back there.Brilliant.
