Why is my external hard drive not showing up on mac? Many people might have asked the questions? an external hard drive not detected on mac due to different reasons including the USB port is broken, there are partition problems on the hard drive, Your MacBook’s drivers are outdated, the hard drive is formatted in the wrong file system, etc. Luckily, there are several solutions to fix the external hard drive not showing up on Mac error.
First, check the hard drive’s cable and ensure it hasn’t encountered any physical damage. You can replace the cable with a new one and your MacBook will start recognizing the hard drive again. Also, check that the port on your Mac isn’t the problem. Try plugging into a different port. Or if you only have one, plug another device in and see if that works ok.
Second, ensure enough power for the drive, as an external hard drive needs an adequate amount of power to connect to a computer.
If changing the cable didn’t fix the mac external hard drive not showing up error, and there is no issue with the power, the next step would be to change the Preference settings of “Finder”, there you can check the video at 3:14s. If your Mac still doesn’t recognize the hard drive, you can use “Disk Utility” to access the drive. Here you need to open "Disk Utility" to mount the external hard drive on Mac. After that, if the external hard drive still not detected on mac, then Run First Aid in the Disk Utility. In case none of the previous solutions work, it’s possible that the hard drive is formatted with the wrong file system. So, you can try to change the drive format by using “Disk Utility” again.

Please it is important and let the audience know that formatting a disk erases the content and they may not be able to recover them. Just a hint before erasing or formatting a disk.

This is my issue, however this Recoverit has found a lot of files which I need to recover. However the software comes at a cost.

same issue here, the drive seems to be running which makes me think the cord isnt the issue and i've tried it on multiple ports on different mac devices, no luck.
@@limitededitionp5577 I think the needle is stuck. The drive needs to be opened and the needle reset from what i found from other videos. I haven't bothered taking it to a shop to fix it but it seems to be the last possible answer.

Thank you for your video, it gives me great information for future reference, however, after trying out all of the options you mentioned I still get a "First Aid process has failed." "Volume cannot ve unmounted". I tried to unmount it in Disc Utility and it prompted me that the disc was being used by another application although I have closed every application. The Disc shows up at the top right of my screen as you mention but no folders or files show up when I try to access it on Finder. any other suggestions? Thank you so much!

Hi, love the video. I am still not able to view my External Drive even in the Disc utility. I took the drive over to a friend's Windows laptop and it show up with all the data on the drive. Please could you help find a way for the drive to show up on my MacBook

I actually can see and access my Seagate Backup Drive, but my issue is that it's showing almost full, but I thought I deleted the bulk of what was on it, so now I'm wondering if I deleted them wrong by just dragging them to the Trash folder on my MacBook. Was quick but my Disk fell once and can't be found or fixed in Utilities. Dam. This sucks. I had all my important data on my Wd My passport. Flimsy drives.

right, so how do you actually fix one that actually isn't showing up, by not showing up I mean it isn't in any list, not in the disk utility, not in the list on something like Disk Drill, basically actually not showing up, even when multiple tested cables and ports aren't helping the drive appear in any utility programme? as in NOT SHOWING UP ?

Great video, thanks. I have a similar issue. My Garmin (drive assist 50) was formatted and I’ve lost all the files plus the disk is not able to mount on to Mac. At least now, j can see the disk in utilities, I fear reformatting it will make it disappear from Mac (like I did last time by mistake). Any other solution?

Ok bro, there's one thing you didn't cover which is something I've done many times before. Unfortunately, it's been a while and I always forget how to find it. So, when I plugged this external cradle in, I accidentally told the computer to ignore it. This means it doesn't matter what drive I put in, it doesn't see it. I've done this years ago and did figure it out. But I can't remember what to do! Can you help me?

Very informative video and in detail, but my issue is I use my external hard drive about 5 days a week for the last 4yrs and it is formatted correctly as of last night it wasn't appearing on my MacBook Pro? I changed the cord and it worked well 2hrs in on using it it unmounted itself? I tried to reconnect and it would not show up only on disk utility I tried to mount it manually through disk utility but it would not mount? I forced the the usb as much as I could into the hard drive and it showed up on my display? I am now backing up files as it appears on my MacBook Pro...... I ran first aid and no issues...... is there anything else I can do without reformatting the HD? or is the HD going out?

When you use the erase option on disk utility does it erase hard drive contents? Or does it just erase external hard drive from Mac?

Hi, my 2011 13" MacBook Pro doesn't recognise (or list in Finder) USB flash drives/micro/SD cards at all (even after these recovery steps you mention in the video). Are there any other solutions? I have been in touch with Apple support, but still no good, even after trying to reset the SMC. It's frustrating though, as it will connect and upload data to other certain USB external drives (e.g. it updated my motorbike intercom software version, with no issues). have bought a new micro SD adaptor, but this is not being recognised. Any suggestions/help would be most appreciated, thank you.

I've downloaded recoverit and when i highlighted my external hard drive and clicked on start it says there's an error with my disk and that i need to unmount it, check if it's readable and restart my macbook. I did those things and it said it again. I need your help

your advice may work when the external drive shows up in Disk Utility but all the trouble shooting hasn't made it show up on the Mac desktop or in DU. Or in recoverit.

Your videos suggests that the external drive will show up on my iMac under Disk Utility. Unfortunately, this is not the case with my iMac. I've tried all the methods shown in your video and my external disk still doesn't appear in my list of devices. However instead of an external drive it does show two disk images. The first is called "Apple UDIF read only compressed zip media" which it says is stored on an external disk. When I click on it to nothing happens. So I'm still without my external hard disk which contains all my backed up data and the data for Y

When formatted Seagate 5T HDD to exFAT (purchased few years ago) in HP Envy laptop purchased November 2022, it is not recognized in my Macbook early 2011. However, when I formatted it in my Macbook to ExFAT, it is recognized in HP Envy laptop as well.

Couldn’t see the drive on the DT. So opened disk utility. Eventually the disk appears, but it takes ages to open and ages for photos (I only have photos on the drive) to open. When trying to access the photos in Lightroom it doesn’t work. So zi tried disk utility again. Got as far as first aid. It said it couldn’t repair the disk… BUT, it ‘sort of’ works. But it doesn’t really because it won’t access files which are clearly there, properly! So I give up and try to dismount but it doesn’t dismount properly. But if I unplug it anyway I get a message saying’ disk not disconnected properly’! Any ideas?
