  • One way to make a downwinder more convenient when shuttling up wind isn't an option is to wing foil up wind, deflate your wing, pack it up and DW sup foil downwind. We've tested it and it works great, check out Gwen's first go at it!

    So cool and brilliant. Winging upwind is fun and faster than driving plus shuttling cars. Voile straps would be fast and work great for attaching paddle. Maybe a lightweight, drybag backpack with large opening for stuffing wing in would be ticket for those of us that might fall on downwind. Drybag would keep wing and backpack from absorbing water (weight) making paddle up on foil even harder for us mortals.

      Driving upwind is much much faster. Driving 40mph will always beat a wing upwind. Plus you save all of your energy for going downwind so you can get more downwind miles in!

    Super cool video, aspirational for me as im on the learning path to be able to do downwind foiling as well. Currently mainly practicing the upwind foiling stage 😂. Thanks for creating the video.

    2.5m wing it must have been crazy windy. Love the shot from the insta 360, is that the camera you are using? Love to see a video on your filming and audio setup. What lake is this, we were in Idaho a bunch this last winter on the way to hood river. I would love to hit it next summer. Larry

      Wind was about 20 knots that day, the KT Dragonfly board (wingfoilprocenter.com/products/kt-ginxu-dragonfly-downwind-foilboard?_pos=1&_psq=drag&_ss=e&_v=1.0) makes it easy to take off with a small wing. Yes we use the insta360 X3, we have a video on how we use 360 cameras ua-cam.com/video/yBHYc-hJc24/v-deo.htmlsi=7vgTzxGWqD_rSlo_ . This was filmed in Sandpoint, Idaho, the only thing is it's windy like that about once every two months haha! So chance to hit a good day when visiting is slim.

    Love it, Gwen. How's the wind in Sandpoint? Is winging growing there? From the other videos you guys have done, it seems like it's a decent spot. But you get around to some awesome spots like the Gorge and Damo said you spend summers there. Is it better than I thought?

    • @DamienLeroyYouTube
      @DamienLeroyYouTube  10 місяців тому

      It probably won’t ever be a destination for riding. It’s not consistent and you gotta get creative to get time on the water. You have to master true light wind riding and get good at swimming back 😅

    The first challenge in this is to pick the right front wing that matches the speed of the swell whilst also getting you up on foil. The second (even harder) challenge is to just stand on the board. I tried it this weekend in very choppy conditions and couldn't pull it off. Got close to paddeling up once or twice but always lost balance 🤷‍♂️

    your entire ride upwind was shown as a single port tack, did you simply not show any of the time riding starboard or did you DW foil on an angle to get back to the start?

    • @DamienLeroyYouTube

      I did tack a couple times, but skipped it in the editing so people wouldn’t leave before the SUP foiling part 😅

    Fantastic video, did your back pack end up being very heavy with the wet wing? I'm 85kg and ride a 115 litre downwind board. I have been practicing paddling up and can get up on foil ok if the wind is strong enough and the seas are steep. I am going to give that a go my 3.5 wing and 1800 APF foil. I struggle to find any downwind runs that have road access and the logistics of getting a driver are difficult.The wing deflate will be my best option.

    • @DamienLeroyYouTube
      @DamienLeroyYouTube  10 місяців тому

      The wing doesn't get too heavy really, but the smaller the wing the better for sure!
