As someone who came to winging from windsurfing I know that too much weight on the back foot was a problem for quite a while. That “locked in” feeling windsurfing where I was comfortable that I wouldn’t be overwhelmed put my weight too far back, my foil was acting more like a plough. One thing I came to realise is that the wing is easier to dump power from and there is little chance of getting catapulted so you can be confident riding more even weighted/ on the front foot. Now I’m at the point I need a 3 common mistakes when gybing video 😅 please 🙏
WHAT!? Thank You so much for this video that I just stumbled upon in my quest to learn wingfoiling.... And to end this with an inspirational note is unique, and spot on just what I need. "You cannot unring a bell" is a lesson I've struggled with all my life where I'll say something mean, and lose that friend or family member due to the complexity of life
Great tips and perfect timing. I spent the past week with bumpy takeoffs, elevator drops, plowing, crashing jibes, burying the nose and rails on foot switches, and just fighting in general. This morning I watched this and a few other of your videos, went out for a session focused on reviewing basics, got myself positioned and balanced, rode with patience and had a spectacular day! Thanks for the tips and all the positive encouragement 😊
Thanks for another great video. I am at the point of Stall, Stall, Stall. Ahhhh. Now you have explained the reason for this I understand and will work on my stance/pump on the back foot, now I know the reason behind it, many thanks. Where's HARRY, the legend it would be good to see him again, such a happy guy, same as yourselves, always positive which is great, many thanks.
Amazing tips, so glad I found your channel ! You made me realize I was going way too much upwind and putting too much pressure on my back feet when pumping (as if I was trying to do a big ollie on a skateboard), can't wait to try to implement those techniques this afternoon in BZH ! Cheers from France 🤙
Damien!
Nice ! Ok, got it for the "stalling" thing, but what about getting on foil and then the board turning instantly on the left or right and me falling ? it would be interesting to have a POV camera to see the rider perspective
Wish I saw this video 18 months ago 😅. Agree with these three things. Back foot heavy was a big thing for me to try to avoid, especially as I progressed to lower volumes.
Could you do a demo of how multiple different board volumes float with you & Gwens weight and then, next level, taking off in different winds speeds? I think it would be massively popular as its something everyone (I know) is keen to know more about.
Learning winging this winter on the snow with a Hovland Snowskate. I hope the winging skills I've learnt so far on the snow translate to the water. I have kite foiled on the water. With your tips today I hope winging with a foil is an easy transition. Great video.
Great advice, thanks for sharing, really well explained! I think too much back foot pressure has been catching me out in light wind conditions, I'll be sure to give your advice a try!
Orrrrrr we could just ride our Onewheels anytime any day or night and no worries about wind and chop ...LOL ....but I'm going keep trying if conditions here would ever cooperate. I agree about the wind thing for sure. As always, "you go when is blows" . Personally I've had a crap ton of fun this last winter with my 3.5 wing and my Onewheel! You never run out of battery ....using the wing and you got brakes and a bi-directional board hahaha Good pointers!
Wonderful messages. Thank you - especially for the philosophical. As I come from a windsurfing background of 40 years I’m struggling to make new habits. The explanations with the hips and sensitivity I feel will be a great help as I can get up but manage to get down rather comically and rapidly 😂😂. Can’t wait for some warmer weather and water. Maybe I’ll have to relocate to Florida 😂.
Can you use and would it make it easier to learn on inflatable foil board to kite foil vs learning on a traditional hard board? Such as a slingshot WF-1 board. Is there a feature of a hard board that would make it easier to learn kite foiling over an inflatable? Thanks
David, When you have a kite you have a lot more power with the power stoke a kite can make. Saying that it can get a smaller volume board up and planing easier and the foil will do the rest to get up flying. Then you are looking to get rid of power in the kite when on foil. The inflatable will be giving you higher volume and can be a little more sticky on the water when getting going vs a hard board usually has a better water release! I hope that helps with your thoughts....
great video (as always!!) ....... I am still learning to wing foil properly (my background is over 40 years of surfing) and would like your input on starting out whether I should ride switch when going in the "other direction". What I mean is I am a natural rider (left foot forward) so when coming back to my starting point I am battle to start foiling and to continue riding right foot forward .... so it seems there are two choices ..... carry on and persevere with riding right foot forward when going in the "other" direction (which I think is the answer!!) or to ride "twisted" and keep my left foot in the front in both directions. I have done a lot of wakeboarding riding switch but no surfing riding switch ........ what do you suggest ?..... My gut feel tells me riding switch makes more sense in the long term. I have a mate who only rides left foot forward and he rides well and can jibe and tack both ways ......but I would really value you expert input on this ....Maybe it could be a subject of another video and the pros and cons of each method .......... Thanks
Steve, Great questions! We all started with riding switch as well at first and then started switching our feet later. When you ride toe side it will be harder to get leverage on the wing so these videos should help you. You got this enjoy the ride! ua-cam.com/video/cyzErg-yaQc/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/8vJiwucJBqQ/v-deo.html
I have inflatable Naish hover board 170 liters, 6.7 length, Naish 6.0 wing & Armstrong foil 2,400. Because of shallow water my mast is 17.5 inches. I also have a 23 inch mast as well. Overall I have trouble unsticking the board so the foil will lift. Another issue in light winds 10 to 14 kts, is my inability to do a complete pump of the wing. I feel like my body is leaning forward too much and the wind gust affects my ability to pump as well. I also moved the foil forward a few inches from the back to help lift the board. Do yo have any recommendations ? Is it bc it is an inflatable board?
A 170L inflatable board is very hard to unstick from the water, it’s even hard for us with lot of experience haha… It may be time to upgrade… reach out to us if you need and we can help you wingfoilprocenter.com
Thanks for the video. What if I have enough speed but still can't make the foil come up (except after falling, where it immediately comes up), do you have any idea of what I could be doing wrong (I don't think I was tilting the board too much, if at all)?
There is a lot to this question. You may have the foil. mounted too far back in the board and it will not want to come up no mater your speed as you are too far forward. Your wing could be very small and needs more speed to rise up and foil. It will come takes time but this may help... ua-cam.com/video/NXaJJqqaGCY/v-deo.html
Thanks@@DamienLeroyUA-cam could be that the foil was too centered that time I'm thinking of. Afterwards I learned about the placement and asked for the foil to be put forward (I tried to rent same Fanatic 142l board and 2000 foil everytime after trying different ones) but I must be missing some little thing. I should soon be starting the season somewhere hopefully nice with steady wind, hopefully I'll have a aha moment soon ;-)
Question: For my first board I bought an inflatable one (145L). I really struggle to fly.... One guy on water once told me: Inflatable boards are more sticky than hard ones, so it is harder for beginners to fly. Do you agree ? should I have bought a hard board to begin ?
Yes inflatable boards are more sticky and especially bigger sizes like 145L are quite hard to take off on foil. Reach out to us through our shop if you want us to help you get a better board: wingfoilprocenter.com
Just out of curiosity how much does the gentleman with the American accent weigh? I saw him in a different video with a Cabrinha Code that I believe was 88L which is the same board that I have.
Could you please give advise on light wind wing. I’m 175lb and beginner. My board is 100 liters . Foil is 1850R North and mast is 85. I would like to buy light wind wing. Current options is : -Duotone slick sls -fone Cwc -cabrinha vision -north mode What size should i take 7 or 8 and what range of wind I can handle ? I would love to be able to rider from 10mph and I have 5m wing
If you want a light wind specific wing, we would definitely suggest you try the 8m Vision, this wing will get you up sooner than any other wing on the market!
These are Cabrinha guys so of course they would recommend the Vision. You should check out some shops that carry multiple brands to get a fair comparison. That said, I think the Vision’s shape will allow us to carry a larger wing. That and the reliability of Cabrinha is why I decided to get a Vision for my light wind wing.
@@smsailfast Well said we 100% agree. Trying other brands to get a fair comparison if possible is best case scenario so the individual can choose what feels right to them. We try to share what we have learned to help as best as possible. Thank you.
Hello Damien! I've been trying to learn to wingfoil but I have been struggling. I've watched so many of your videos but I'm just missing something. I can repeatedly stand up, but I keep falling. I'm still very determined to learn, but I just need someone to point out where exactly I am going wrong. I live in Boynton Beach and I know you guys tend to be in Jupiter. Would it be possible to meet up with you guys one day on good conditions and get some pointers?

So, for big boys (or fat boys ;) ) one our difficulty is to make ourself lighter ! All the fancy Wing UA-camrs are quite sporty and don't look so heavy ;) Any other tip for the fatties ?
I started with a short mast and I can tell that the main advantage is to gain confidence, it is scary when the board takes off to high until you get use to it. Off course it limits you a lot but as a first approach to the sport I would highly recommend it as a “trainer mast”

This makes me sick to see advice like this. I’m sure you are just trying to be funny and you’re not. I would put it in a more positive way and say that it is zen-like.
