  • Went from a 6-speed manual Mini Cooper S to a 6 speed dual clutch DSG Volkswagen GTI MK6. Is it as exciting and engaging on the weekends? No. Is it a much better choice for a daily driver that can still be exhilarating? Definitely.

    I totally agree, I live in Atlanta, and traffic is terrible everyday at all times. The DSG does a phenomenal job in heavy traffic; it will say in 1st and 2nd and does a fantastic job of modulating the clutch at low speed and creeping forward slowly. I did however get the DSG Tune to eliminate the auto-kick down in Manual and also prevent auto-upshift at max RPM.

      @@shouldigetit I had a local shop put an APR Stage 1 High Torque + APR DSG tune at the same time. I like how it displays D1-D6 on the dash now while in drive. RPM’s stay a bit higher in drive and shifts are super fast while in sport mode + manual as if the engine no longer pulls out timing and it slips the clutch a tiny bit. (Only under mid to high throttle)

    I picked up my Mk6 GTI Wolfsburg edition over a month ago and I have no regrets going for the DSG (my first car). Theres a ton of manual Mk6 GTIs for sale and I happened to snag the last DSG one I could find near me. Manual would have been fun, especially for a youngster like me, but I am currently working 5-6 days a week and usually sitting in traffic on the highway so I felt the DSG was the most logical way to go due to my circumstances (I live near Toronto and always driving on the QEW/403, theres always traffic going towards Toronto... if traffic wasn't as bad I most likely would have gone for a manual). Love the way VW tuned the transmission to be smooth when both driving hard or driving like a granny. I've been in some other dual clutch cars and I definitely think VW/Audi tuned their DSG perfectly for all scenarios, compared to other brands DCTs. The paddle shifters come in real handy as well. Overall I really think I made the right decision, and to anyone reading this comment I'd absolutely also recommend going with the DSG transmission if you're on the fence about it. Glad I didn't go manual. Maybe one day when I have enough money I'll get a manual weekend car.
    Slightly off topic but I might also go for a resonator delete on my GTI just to make it slightly louder without getting negative attention from civilians or cops (also the cheap way out). Plus louder DSG farts! Lol

    I have a question, what’s the point of the paddles if you have sport mode? And let’s say your using the paddles and you floor it in 3rd gear and redline it, will it automatically shift to the next gear even if you didn’t press the paddle?

    • @shouldigetit
      @shouldigetit  3 роки тому +3

      Great question. The purpose of the paddles is so you can control which gear you’re in rather than having the gear “guess” it. Sport mode does do a very good job but it goes based off the gas / brake inputs so sometimes you may want to downshift or upshift without change of throttle application.
      If you floor it in 3rd gear to redline it’ll stay at redline - it will not automatically upshift

    You brought up some excellent points, especially the weak clutch setup on the manual MK7s. The DSG has a clutch pack bathed in oil, exactly the way motorcycles have been doing for a century (without the true manual control like a motorcycle), so there’s no doubt that DSG clutch plates may last longer than a dry clutch system with frequent fluid changes and care. HOWEVER, DSG servicing is expensive, parts are expensive, reliability is questionable and by tuning the DSG, you are also compromising those little friction plates of the clutch with added power / enhanced load cycles. At the end of the day, I went from a DSG MK7 to a 6MT MK7.5 just because despite the East Toronto (Canada) traffic (probably worse than LA), I missed the engagement of a manual. With an amazing array of aftermarket options for our cars, you can change the manual gearbox experience on these cars to be even better than the DSG. All my GTIs have been the easiest cars to ever drive in traffic, very light and forgiving controls. I’ve got a DKM stage 2 clutch and Single-Mass flywheel, along with an ECS Bleeder block, CTS short shift kit, BFI weighted shift knob, CTS intake, down pipe, AWE catback exhaust, EQT stage 2 tune on Cobb AP. Cobb AP also gives you flat-foot shifting and launch control on any tune, so lightning fast shifts are easily achievable with the manual 😉. The DSG is easily the original DCT box that has been developed for decades now, and there’s no doubt it’s one hell of a gearbox. Cheers !

      @@evangelos949 Thank you! I hope you are a subscriber. In terms of DSG to manual, if you live in a non traffic ridden area I would recommend going manual. It is much more engaging and leads to more enjoyment experiencing the car. Thankfully I still have my 91' Miata with a manual and can enjoy that when the roads are open. Hope that helps!

      I guess it boils down to the clutch and yes, out the box the DSG has much more potential than the OEM clutch system that comes with the manual.

      My manual 2020 GTI can’t even hold light stage 1 tune with mods without slipping. All my friends have the DSG and are stage 2 or even stage 3 with only a tcu tune. I need a 1600 dollar clutch and 600 dollar for install, vs a 400 unlock and 175 dollar tune.

      @@shouldigetit hello. Sorry for the late reply. Various issues with the clutch disc. The only person that can perform a good work on it is the dealership because the clutch is connected to the vehicle computer and regulate almost everything automatically. Therefore, the mechanic must adjust/calibrate the computer system as well, and that is the work of the dealership, because it’s the only way that you will get a two year warranty on the part. And don’t put anything else than the original, no matter how much someone else will tell you that is better than the original. I should have went to the dealership from the start.
