Owning my 2010 GTI with 85k miles for 2 years, I can honestly say it's a great car especially if you're handy with some tools which will save you loads of money doing most repairs yourself. Only thing on mine was the a radiator leak and replaced it myself. Bought mine stock standard with a full service history and intend to keep it that way. New tensioner and regular maintenance should bring you far with this little bullet.
@@sleepywizzard65 Really depends on what you're doing, cruising long distances with speed control set to 125km/h would give me 14km/l which really isn't bad. Spirited driving in town would land me on like 3 or 4km/l😂 GTI owners don't typically buy them with economy in mind.
@@charldhechter Yeah I understand that it is a dumb question but the country I'm in really sucks and I would like just to get the dang GTI 😭😭. Although I'm mostly commuting on 60 and 80kmh speed limit roads and very little city driving, so that's why I'm asking, but of course a bit of spirited driving shouldn't be a problem ;). Thank you for the answer!
In my younger days, I had no choice but to own a used car. I was told, and experienced that running a used car, costs $1500.00 per year for repairs and maintenance. And it did. You are way below the average, good for you. But then it is a VW ! Great video, you answered the questions that an average car owner needs to know. Thanks, RickGTI….. 🌴🇺🇸
My 2013 manual GTI has been the best car I have ever owned. Currently with 113k miles and still runs like new. It has never let me down and it is a blast to drive.
I have to agree, I’ve had some fun and great cars but our GTI has just been flawless. A perfect daily but also fun and rare enough to turn heads. Peak GTI.
Clearly a good one then mines a 2010 mk6 dsg new camshaft ,tensioners, sensors, chain, etc I’m glad I got mine from a garage so they covered the repairs
A cool little video. It’s surprising and has to be one of the cheapest ways of owning a car. When I think how much my lease is on the tesla 😳 I often think id have been better off running a few year old car. Saying all that it made me think about my cayman. In three years that’s cost about £1200 a year all in except fuel. Bargain 👍 (though it has only done 8000 in three years 😂)
Yeah for sure, getting something older but good. The single biggest issue is rolling the dice, some of these older cars can cause headaches with reliability. I’ve been lucky but the mk6 in general has some bad reviews.
I'm looking into buying an MK6 GTI 2011/12 mostly to be an daily driven and an hobby project, was wondering what is better, manual or dsg automatic? Thanks!
@@JoeTalksCars Thank you for an answer Joe! I will go with dsg. Do you know how reliable they are and what should i be careful off as it’s second hand?
I bought a used 2020 E-Golf (for the purpose of saving money) in the first 12 months it’s lost £11,000+ in depreciation negating an savings of fuel, maintenance etc 🤣 Should have bought a GTi
I've had my 2009 gti for 9 months now, it's in the garage right now getting the timing chain changed now, it's got 110,000 miles on it! No problems so far.
@@chrisstone8560 hey I was quoted around £1100 by one garage and £1400 by another garage. Most garages I phoned didn't even want to touch it or they told me it would be 2 months before I could get booked in. I found a friend to do it for me for £900 tho, chains, tensioner, guides, oil etc
Seems a lot but prices here are so different. Hard to say, does it compare with others on eBay and the likes? Mileage isn’t bad to be fair. These cars will take 250,000 miles easy!
Let me know when you will be selling it as will be looking to buy one soon mate, i do own an st225 at the moment, but it drinks fuel literally DRINKS it😂😂
Ahh you made me do math, i got my 08 jetta 2.5 manual in 2013 with 92,000 miles for 8,500 dollars now it has 180,000, evrything but gas and tires, 5705$ for me thats 22 oil changes 660$,1 hub barring 200$, 1 set of coils 60$ plugs 30$, stupid key broke, new ignition 60$, and 120$ in brakes, the rest is insurance. 4,545$. Posting this comment a little bit too late... But in case you're still active on your account, how was the fuel consumption for you?

dont forget the cost of all the speeding fines
Never been caught 😆
😂😂😂
😭😂😂😂
Speeding fines? Oh man how is loathe to live in a place where that isn't easily avoided
Sssshhhhhhh, quiet you, lol
I'm looking into buying an MK6 GTI 2011/12 mostly to be an daily driven and an hobby project, was wondering what is better, manual or dsg automatic? Thanks!
As a daily I’d go DSG, cheaper on fuel, quicker and of course in traffic way easier to live with. The manual however is such great fun!
@@JoeTalksCars Thank you for an answer Joe! I will go with dsg. Do you know how reliable they are and what should i be careful off as it’s second hand?
How did you get an MOT with the eng. management light on?
I’ve never had a problem with it. I have no idea why. I wonder each year 🤣
how about the defect to drink engine oil ? How much oil does it burn in your example?
Mine is really good. It does around 12,000 miles a year but needs 1 top up between services.
Last year my road tax cost me 360£ for the A3 8P1 2.0tfsi quattro s line. 08 plate with 87k at the time
I was looking at a 2010 GTI as my first car, coincidense that you just made a video on it
Weird! Had this one years but it doesn’t come on the channel much. I love this car, I can’t think of a better more fun car for the money.
Is it a good first car i want one for my first as well
@@MK-kl9tw id say. It is my first car and I’ve loved it so far

Hi Joe, where did you get the tensioner changed? Cheers Lee 🙂
It was at Arch Garage, Filey.
@@JoeTalksCars thank you for the swift reply, your video is very helpful re me looking to purchase a Golf Gti MK6 :-)
How does it pass an m.o.t with a light on ?
No idea but always has
Tbf great commentary
Thank you!
You can go even cheaper. Love this car 👍
Yeah I’m sure there is some great buys out there. Love my mk6
@@JoeTalksCars yeah. I have a 6 speed manual 211hp 3 door full leather & led lights. It still looks pretty modern.

Wow! Yeah but the fuel economy of the GTI isn’t the best 🤣 heard they can be unreliable too but it seems I got very lucky
Bad things about the 2010 batch of mk6 gti are that the timing chains are really unreliable.
100% it is! I have upgraded the tensioner in mine, had zero issues with the car.
I've had my 2009 gti for 9 months now, it's in the garage right now getting the timing chain changed now, it's got 110,000 miles on it! No problems so far.
How much were you quoted for the timing chain work ??

I have a 2012 gti .. am I safe? xD
I also have a 987 Cayman and a mk6 gti. I guess we have similar taste.
Nice! So many have commented this too. Incredible really. Both great cars, we do have such great taste.
There is a 2011 GTI with 113,500 km (70,525 miles) for about $16,000 Canadian dollars (with taxes) from a dealership. Is that too much?

Haha it a car I never thought I would keep this long but it’s that good. I would highly recommend one. Get the ST chopped in. 🤣
Looking at buying one now with 130k miles for $8,000, is that too much?
Seems good but not sure on your market. High mikes I wouldn’t say is an issue on a well looked after car.
is it worth to buy one for £7000 which has 103k miles ?
Depending on service history but seems a fair price!
Just seen your comment, yeah don’t buy mine 🤣🤣 tbh the light is gone now 😉
I don't believe that mileage, with such a big gouge out of the driver seat.
It’s a tiny mark🤣

Speak for yourself mate. I spend 6k fixing mine in the first year
Wow! What happened to it?
This car is so quiet and thatis illegal for mk6😢
Yeah but as a daily, I like it. Plus 4 cylinder cars are just not going to sound too great anyway
