Let me share a story with you. In 1981 I was dating my future wife. I played this song for her on a cassette tape recorder. I told her the lyrics of this song expressed how I felt about her. We were married for 20 years and ended up divorced after raising two wonderful children. Over the last 35 years whenever this song came on the radio, I would immediately think of her whether we were married, divorced, or somewhere in between. She passed away unexpectedly earlier this month. That morning when I first found out, I went out to buy a suit to wear to her funeral. I went to the checkout to pay for it. This song, which I had always associated with her, played at the very moment I was buying a suit for her funeral. Needless to say, I was crying before I left the store. I saw Chicago in 1970 at the "Music Circus in Lambertville, NJ (near New Hope PA) "Country Joe and the Fish" opened up the show with "Give me an 'F', give me a 'U', etc. What's that spell. Insane outdoor concert. i was 21-years old. Thats 'tame', by today's standards. I'd love to go back in time!
I went through highschool listening to Chicago, they could me psyched up for my track meets like nothing else could. We had some good runners ... two held the USAEUR records for the 800 meter and 1600 meter events ... Augsburg Germany ... 1976 uber alles.
Chicago's ability to change Tempo so many times in one verse is uncanny, it's like there's only one person driving the car. This is the best version I've ever heard
Friend: I saw them live in Carbondale: SIU. The best performance ever: I was on the top stage on the group. Why are they not in the Hall of Fame of the Best Band Orchestras of all times?
@@jairourdaneta1 They are. Inducted in 2016. A bit of an affront, IMO, when you see the list of people that were inducted before them. They should have been inducted many years ago.
Cool thing is they had 3 lead singers, who were very talented musicians. Terry Kath, Peter Cetera, and Robert Lamm. They are America’s version of the Beatles, with a kick ass horn section!
What other band has a freaking trombone solo in their song???? Chicago 1968-1974 - one of the Top 10 best, most innovative bands at a time when innovation was all around you (LedZep, Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, Santana, Jethro Tull, oh my god - the list is endless). We are so lucky to have witnessed this (almost) live...
A fantastic song. You could see that they loved playing with each other. Every instrument was played at its best. I am 73 and have been a Chicago & Terry Kath fan for over 50 years. I am from Chicago and have seen them dozens of times. Terry was playing rhythm guitar like it was lead. He was strumming so fast, it was beyond belief. With this band the horns aren't in the back...but upfront taking the lead when they should, Thanks
How could this possibly be 54 years ago?! I remember it like it was yesterday. And still listening. As has been said repeatedly, this was the BEST decade for music, bar none.
This was a special night to be caught on film. Pankow would say 25 plus years later that this was "Chicago at it's absolute best, all friends, no egos, out for nothing but good music, synching together in a way that was 100% on that night." Kath, he pointed out all those years later was maybe the "best there ever was" on that particular evening. Man, the jazz infusion on that song, the harmonies, the horns, and although we all love to praise Kath, rightly so, everybody on the stage made that magic work.
Its so obvious what he's talking about.....nothing but love, friendship, outstanding music oozing off that stage....wishing I was there...thank God for UA-cam!!!
I grew up in the 70's and of course was aware of "Chicago." I remember asking this girl, what do you like better " Saturday in the Park, " or "Saturday is all Right for Fighting?" I knew little about the dynamics of the band besides there were a bunch of them, they had a born section, and had a guitarist with a really deep voice who accidentally? shot himself himself. Now I realize that this band was unique in that everybody pulled their weight musically. Cause during their heyday I never saw them or even knew what they looked like. So watching them on big-time is a revelation. They all wrote, and if they wrote less then they made up for it with musicianship and energy. What great writers the horn players and keyboardist were. What great singers Lamn, Cetera and Kath were. What a virtuoso the drummer and guitarist were. Seven guys, all of them indespensible. Amazing! Unfortunately, horns in a rock band became passe by the mid-seventies. The great experiment starting with Blood Sweat & Years ended with Chicago, Too bad, but what are you gonna do?
I agree, Danny Crockett. They were in sync, in the pocket & in the zone at Tanglewood; from beginning to end, I would arguably say this was their best live performance EVER!
my dad's drinking friend from childhood one christmas gave us the 4 record Live at Carnegie Hall Chicago Album...he always gave great gifts, that one I still have.
I was in high school 1975 to 1977 and loved Chicago from the very beginning. Had all their record albums. Saw them three times in concert. This was my favorite song of theirs.
I mind crawling through the basement of DePaul to sneak in and see Chicago. I think at the time (70?) the tickets were 50 cents, but 50 cents was the cost of two packs of cigarettes, so the smokes won out.
Now for the younger generation these folks are what you call musicians. You see not a turntable in sight! They play and sing and you can understand them and sound good.
I listened to the oldies station Kool 95.7 in New Orleans in the late 80s and early 90s with my mom running errands. I listened to all kinds of songs on the radio with her and this is one of many I remember and will love forever!
RIGHT?!? That's what I was thinking too! I usually don't like live versions of songs because they stray far form the studio recordings... but not this. Just jaw dropping amazing. What spectacular musicians.
In high school in the 70’s my friends and i in band just loved Chicago. We started a band called “Intensity” that did nothing but Chicago songs and likely learned 5 songs. We were just terrible, but we insisted upon playing at local events and such. Looking back now i don’t know how my mom tolerated our band rehearsals in the basement. Thank you Mom and when i play for you in the hereafter i promise that I will have improved!
You won't hear this kind of band on the airwaves now not of this caliber. RIP Terry Kath. This band was so tight in this original order. They rocked GOAT.
Wow, this was 54 years ago!!!!!! I am so damned old lol. This just proves again that great music is timeless, it doesn't matter how old it is. But I gotta say..... those guys with Leonid and Friends have REALLY brought this group's music back to the forefront with their concerts in the US over the last few years.
Just saw Leonid and Friends in concert this summer. Calling them a "cover" band is a bit of an in😢sult! Like Chicago, everyone in that band is a first rate talent! Saw Chicago numerous times back in their early years. Remember it fifty years later. I'm 80 and still get a thrill watching these videos!
Love Robert Lamm!!!! His voice is beautiful! All of these guys were unbelievably amazing. Terry Kath - what can I say? There are no words for his master guitar playing!
This song is so EPIC! Robert Lamm's voice is amazing & his adlib of KC & the Sunshine's Band's "Yes I'm Ready" after the first stanza. I love the arrangement of the song and the "pregnant pauses." Kath's genius on the guitar, the drummer tinkering & pounding, the talented brass section, and the subtleness of the bass guitar - just perfect. From every nuance and crescendo, this song is perfection!!
Tanglewood was a goal for many young musicians. A great accomplishment to have Chicago play here as well as they did. Such a tremendously talented group.

The Holy Spirit
It seriously confirms my feelings about a “gods-like intervention”. This kinda shit doesn’t “just happen”.
Always a fan! 77 now and I am so grateful to have had the music we had to accompany being young and still here to help us stay young between our ears!
Stay young 😮
I love how the horn section wasnt stuck in the background of the stage, the were right up front with the rest of the band.
That was the point.
Plus the way they rock their solos...and when Jimmy and Lee go for it on this song --I just lose it!!
Good point!
They wrote a lot of their songs. Mr. Pankow.
Like Blood, Sweat, & Tears
My favorite Chicago song. That may be because I loved Robert Lamm. ❤🎶
Who is with me in December 2019...In The "Beginning" God Created Chicago...One Of The Greatest Bands Ever"....
Agreed
I saw Chicago in 1970 at the "Music Circus in Lambertville, NJ (near New Hope PA) "Country Joe and the Fish" opened up the show with "Give me an 'F', give me a 'U', etc. What's that spell. Insane outdoor concert. i was 21-years old. Thats 'tame', by today's standards. I'd love to go back in time!
100% Agree!!!!
One of my late father Al Guilford's favorite, one of his live son Adam's too... love CTA
I went through highschool listening to Chicago, they could me psyched up for my track meets like nothing else could. We had some good runners ... two held the USAEUR records for the 800 meter and 1600 meter events ... Augsburg Germany ... 1976 uber alles.
I used sing this to my wife when we were dancing close. She past in 2007. Miss her when I hear this.
Im sorry

@Don Juan Matus
So sorry 💔🕇
Michael keep on dancing brother, that's what your beautiful wife would have wanted
This is a fantastic concert...and an amazing version of Beginnings...RIP Terry
I was At this Concert I was 16 Years old Sold a LB. of Pot Made 2 Grand I loved This Concert !!!!
My 23yr loves this song as much as I do
Chicago's ability to change Tempo so many times in one verse is uncanny, it's like there's only one person driving the car. This is the best version I've ever heard
They were so tight, in the pocket. Pros.
fantastic arrangement
everyone's listening out for each other bro but 'specially coming in with Danny Seraphine he absolutely owns this half way in 😀
Most people don't really appreciate bands and actual musicians these days. These guys were phenomenal..
Friend: I saw them live in Carbondale: SIU. The best performance ever: I was on the top stage on the group. Why are they not in the Hall of Fame of the Best Band Orchestras of all times?
Simply put, one of the greatest bands of all time.
@@jairourdaneta1 They are. Inducted in 2016. A bit of an affront, IMO, when you see the list of people that were inducted before them. They should have been inducted many years ago.
@@jairourdaneta1 siu!!! I graduated in '83!
I saw them in 69, great performance!
Cool thing is they had 3 lead singers, who were very talented musicians. Terry Kath, Peter Cetera, and Robert Lamm. They are America’s version of the Beatles, with a kick ass horn section!
Which one sings Beginnings?
An Chicago's albums and hits and jams were all selling as well as the Stones and Beatles in that era Elton John also
This is pure talent playing live.. And no Auto Tune.. Pure golden talent.. no mas
Omg😎
Chicago mil veces mejor 😎👌,que los Beatles 💩👌en lo personal aclarando no me gusta el grupo Beatles la vdd.
Mis respetos para el grupo Chicago
@@LosPeluchesdeRambo64
Para MI sinceramente.
Chicago es mejor. La neta.😎
Saw them the weekend after I graduated in 1971 near Cleveland.
I can't get enough! The energy in this song is so sweet
Only one word needed "masterpiece"
Masterpiece, indeed! Lamm is on lead vocals here. This is my top Chicago song.
This is why UA-cam deserves its popularity. Hard to believe this was 46 years ago.
Tell me about it.
Dave L time passes much quickly!
and there songs still sound as good today as they did almost 50 years ago. do you think Tupac crap will be around 50 yrs from now?
Do tell.
And it still holds up!
Enjoy watching 74 yrs old endless.favorite
I was a kid in the 70’s but I LOVED the 70’s. And this music!!!
It's hard not to...
How could this possibly be 54 years ago?! I remember it like it was yesterday. And still listening. As has been said repeatedly, this was the BEST decade for music, bar none.
Amen
Nostalgic tears for a time when Rock was King. Pathetic tears for today's 'Rock'.
When I grow up to be a time traveler, I'll go to this show.
Tanglewood is still a great venue!
Might as well camp out there for good, check out the Santana and Jethro Tull complete shows from Tanglewood.
Good one
I’ll go with you
The bartender says, "I'm sorry, we don't serve time travelers here."
(After a long pause.....)
A time traveler walks into a bar. ;)
Beautiful witness...Pankow's blow is supreme...like a clarion call....
Its so obvious what he's talking about.....nothing but love, friendship, outstanding music oozing off that stage....wishing I was there...thank God for UA-cam!!!
The original and best line up 👍
I grew up in the 70's and of course was aware of "Chicago." I remember asking this girl, what do you like better " Saturday in the Park, " or "Saturday is all Right for Fighting?" I knew little about the dynamics of the band besides there were a bunch of them, they had a born section, and had a guitarist with a really deep voice who accidentally? shot himself himself.
I love it when Terry Kath sings ❤❤
my dad's drinking friend from childhood one christmas gave us the 4 record Live at Carnegie Hall Chicago Album...he always gave great gifts, that one I still have.
Amen. I was in high school 1975 - 1979 listening to and a fan of this incredible, complex, sophisticated music. Kids today are listening to ...
Crap.
I was in high school 1975 to 1977 and loved Chicago from the very beginning. Had all their record albums. Saw them three times in concert. This was my favorite song of theirs.
The trombone player is having so much fun.😄
I don't know much about James Pankow, but he seems to be as equal a driving musical force as Terry and Lamb, just not as a front man.
Jimmy Pankow, a force of nature!!!!
The time of his life fa real
He can "blow" !! Wow !
@@rudolphguarnacci197 He wrote Color My World and Make Me Smile, and Feeling Stronger Every Day with Cetera I believe.
I’m back for about the 15th time watching this. Love it.
Chicago still sounds as good as back in the day when I was a junior at South Shore high school in 1970!👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽✌🏾
I mind crawling through the basement of DePaul to sneak in and see Chicago. I think at the time (70?) the tickets were 50 cents, but 50 cents was the cost of two packs of cigarettes, so the smokes won out.
Every time I watch this video, all I can hear is the genius of Terry Kath. Had he lived, the band would have maintained its bluesy funk roots.
Dunno, according to some he was close to splitting from the band in 1978. Too MOR for him.
@@boke75 MOR?
Now for the younger generation these folks are what you call musicians. You see not a turntable in sight! They play and sing and you can understand them and sound good.
I listened to the oldies station Kool 95.7 in New Orleans in the late 80s and early 90s with my mom running errands. I listened to all kinds of songs on the radio with her and this is one of many I remember and will love forever!
Don’t leave out auto tune!
A fuckin men, they think they're musicians if they waggle a record back n forth, what no talent shits, fuck rap, disco, bullshit tecnopop, fuck it all
Yes, just absolute talent.
Robert Lamm ❤
Man, for a live performance, thats about as close to the studio recording as you could get. They were an exceptionally good group of musicians.
RIGHT?!? That's what I was thinking too! I usually don't like live versions of songs because they stray far form the studio recordings... but not this. Just jaw dropping amazing. What spectacular musicians.
Yeah !! They Were Too
Better live too me.
Hopefully your English will have improved by then as well.
Dude, shut up, somethings in my eyes, now I gotta wipe them. 😢

and great for 68'ers, too!
❤ Chicago!!!
Three great voices Lamm,Kath, Cetera
Lamm they say is the author. If he is: All the group is good
I was just thinking that to myself when I came across your post.
all in the same group unreal :)
If Lamm is the author , all of the group is good. Ummm , ok. They all be good at what they do.

One of the greatest bands EVER!
You won't hear this kind of band on the airwaves now not of this caliber. RIP Terry Kath. This band was so tight in this original order. They rocked GOAT.
You'll enjoy Leonid & friends, as they bring Chicago's music into the 21st century. They tour regularly, and are very good, live.
A totally unique sound. Immediately recognizable and sounds as fresh and original now as it did 50+ years ago. THAT is talent.
I love this song so much 😢❤
This song is timeless....
Yes, but does anybody really know what time it is?
Love Robert Lamm!!!! His voice is beautiful! All of these guys were unbelievably amazing. Terry Kath - what can I say? There are no words for his master guitar playing!
Truth there... and that karma synergy.....Chicago Transit Authority.....
Unreal so masterful
Kath's voice was outstanding, as well.
@@schtuke Truth...
My favorite group of all time. Their art is so beautiful it brings tears to my eyes.
My favorite spin from my favorite group!!
Great song, lots of memories!
Chicago when Chicago was Chicago
😅❤
Fu@k yeah!
Tanglewood was a goal for many young musicians. A great accomplishment to have Chicago play here as well as they did. Such a tremendously talented group.
Chicago was one of the most underrated bands even Jimi Hendrix thought that they were awesome
To that point--when I saw Hendrix in Oakland (April 1969), The Chicago Transit Authority were second on the bill.
Never were underrated!
... there is always a fool who says this underrated nonsense.. Chicago was considered a top band from the beginning.
@@greggrimm5056 It's well documented that Jimi said. Terry Kath is a better guitar player than him
I'm here still remember dancing to this in the early 70's
The greatest guitarist ever to live! I swear Terry becaome one with his guitar! RIP Terry Kath
Truth...and Pankow just nails his solo..
Never forget that day he died!! So many great musicians died way before we could hear everything they had to offer!!!
Sad he was great
Absolutely
