They actually received a lot of flack for this song from fans stating it wasn’t metal enough. They used an orchestra and people didn’t like it. I love it.
Yeah for me it was the other way around. I was a Metallica fan, but after their first S&M album I moved on to symphonic metal. Metallica made me realise that metal just needs an orchestra. 🙂
Or could it be that metallica moved away from the Thrash genra ? if you like ''thrash metal this song aint for you... got nothing to do with Thrash metal.... dont think people cared about the orchestra,,
this was always a love song to me my husband used to sing it to me before we were married mmfjdfhgj years ago... it always brings me to tears I miss Him.. it will always be the sweetest love ballad he ever sang to me. and I thank Mettalica for creating it.
The song is about his girlfriend at the time and how much he missed her when he was on tour. Also Elton John has said several times that it’s the most beautiful song ever written. You can actually listen to Elton John zoom call James on the Howard Stern Show to tell him what he thinks about the song. James gets very emotional about what Elton says.
I'm so glad you like this type of music as well.i feel all music is energy and no matter what genre, if it hits you, it hits you!!! If, you actually love music and emotion!!!! Respect brotha 💪🏽💪🏽🔥
I get so tickled listening to you and others who find out that rock and metal weren't just noise and long hair, there were outstanding musicians and lyricists in those groups. Glad to see and hear your delight in discovering them!
This is one of the best pieces of music ever. It is about the unbreakable connections we form with our loved ones. This is about James and his girlfriend, but the message is universal!
Check out Carolne Baran's version with Post Modern Jukebox. She makes you really feel the lyrics. She's 15 years old, and totally amazing. I highly recommend that you explore this.
@@SoulReaver904 the core was James and his girlfriend at the time, but as it is with many of the Metallica songs, it is very applicable to many situations and has multiple meanings... For some of the band this could have been an ode to Cliff too.
I did not have a traditional wedding. I walked to this song to my forever mate. whom I now have been married to for 39 yrs and Nothing Else Matters!!!!
There’s a gorgeous live performance of this on Howard Stern with Metallica and MILEY Cyrus! She sings lead and it’s spectacular- she is meant for Metal!
The beauty of this song is it can be about so many things. A relationship with a loved one, a relationship with a higher power, the band's relationship and trust in each other, or to the fans of Metallica that have followed and supported them for years. When this is done live, and you are part of that crowd singing... it is transcendental. It feels like you are part of a family. The band refers to their fans as the "Metallica Family," I have followed them since their beginning and now have 3 generations (me, my sons, and grandkids) going to Met concerts. It's an amazing thing!
Absolutely. Like fine art, it is open to interpretation. Even their song .aater Of Puppets, which is definitely about drugs and how they take over your life and control you, is open for each person to feel which vice or aspect of life it is about for them.
i always assumed it was about the brotherhood of their band. that's the great part about music, we place our meaning onto it. it doesn't always matter what the original meaning was.
I think reacting without the homework is so much more authentic. Also, it allows you to interpret it the way you see it without other influences. Great job BP.
I like that the "homework" he does, happens DURING the video! It's just so fun to see more than just a reaction from someone who's passionate about learning more and more
This is about when you are in the most beautiful relationship in the world that nobody else understands...but who cares? Nothing else matters. Love it.
This was a love song that James Hetfield (guitar/ vocals) wrote to his then-girlfriend while he was away on tour w/ Metallica... The other members were shocked that a love song was going on Metallica's 5th album in 1991 (the massive-selling 'black' album) and 'Nothing else matters' became a pop hit in 1992... Sadly, James and her broke up after the record was done... Metallica never made religious songs - they always made song bashing religious zealots because James lost his mom to cancer as a teen after she refused treatment... She was a devout Christian science follower who believed that 'God' would heal her through prayer and faith. That loss affected James Hetfield for the rest of his life... He wrote 'The God that failed' about his mom's misplaced faith... He wrote 'The Unforgiven' and "Dyers' eve" about his parents failing him in life (His dad left when he was a kid... He experienced a lot of abuse growing up and drove him to alcoholism).
You gotta watch the clip where Elton John videocalls a show that had Metallica on, starts praising this song.. James Hetfield cant help but shed a couple of tears hearing one of the most respected musicians in the world talk about a personal love song written by him, an introverted orphan who reached world fame while battling alcoholism .. Imagine the cocktail of emotions he must have had writing this ..
The Black Album ( named “Metallica”) released in 1991 catapulted these guys from being the world’s greatest band in rock / metal to the greatest band on the planet in all music….they had a three year long World Tour with this album….some old heads turned away from them ( claiming they sold out) but millions and millions new fans surrendered to them sending Metalica into eternal stardom

The whole Black album is fire, but my favorite Metallica albums are the S&M albums!! They're backed by The San Francisco Symphony, and it's a whole different experience!! No leaf clover, and Hero of the day are 2 of my favorite songs off of those albums! Definitely worth a peep! And James is 💯 a poet!!
This song is off the Black Album( album 5) James wrote this song about a girlfriend but didn’t want to release it.( so you’re on point). Later Lars ( the drummer) insisted on recording it and it became Metallica’s anthem. It resonated their journey and became a tribute to each other. By this time they were on their 3rd bassist ( Ron McGovney, Cliff Burton, Jason Newsted). 2nd guitarist ( Dave Mustaine, Kirk Hammett). McGovney left, Mustaine was kicked out but Burton died in a tour bus wreck in Germany. Burton was a musical student but not at Juilliard. The rest were just teenage rockers. Burton’s influence is apparent in a lot of their music( especially their earlier albums).
Cliff and Lars flipped a coin or something like that for a certain bunk. Cliff won the bunk and the driver claimed he hit black ice but James ran up and down the road in his underwear and never saw any black ice.
Please do Fade to Black. You will be amazed at how many people come out and say the song saved their lives. Crucial Metallica song if you’re a true fan!
BP~ I LOVE your reactions!!❣️These are songs that I’ve loved for 30-40 years!🙋♀️🙌 You are very open, sincere & genuine. I’m not sure if you’d even care, but I can ONLY watch reactions with you, alone. I can’t watch when that other guy is with you. He doesn’t take anything seriously and he distracts you from the spirit and key points of the songs.
Really appreciate you going in blind. I worked with a contemporary artist who held the view that people who didn't understand art, shouldn't bother going to art galleries. He wanted everyone to be fully aware of the context, the meaning the artist had intended when creating a piece. It hurt my soul to hear him say that - art of any kind, be it visual or sound is for everyone and can have a profound affect on us. I worked in a museum where an Ikebana floral arrangement moved a middle-aged man to tears. I ended up hugging him as he explained it had suddenly reminded him of a recently deceased friend. So I don't believe limit should be put on interpretations and gut emotional responses to created works. As for this song, I always took the lyrics as being about his solidarity with his band members, being open and vulnerable when singing and through the lyrics he writes, that nothing matters more to him than creating authentic art - that's my interpretation anyhoo. Like you - I enjoy going digging into meanings and intentions later. 🥰 A stunning track, so glad you listened.
I've heard this played at a wedding and a funeral, and it was completely appropriate in both settings. The best songs mean something different for each person listening without negating the composer's original intent, and this is one of the greatest. Huge respect to you for opening yourself to new musical experiences. Love the fact that you're prepared to make yourself a little vulnerable by doing them completely blind. Have you thought about exploring some classical pieces? I think it may deepen your appreciation for other musical genres and how musicians go about their craft. Just an idea ✌️
"You guys go wild and I don't know why" For me it's 3 core reasons among many ancillary ones. The three cores for me: 1) You are an artist yourself so you have extra insight that some other people might not, and at heart and respect the art regardless of if it is your thing 2) I can tell from watching you that you actually try to see what the art is showing you, or making you feel, you don't just write it off at face value 3) It's always dope seeing someone from another fanbase tip their toes into something you love As someone who has intensely loved so many different genres in my life, it's always amazing to vicariously watch someone's musically journey to a place you did in the past, a place and time you hold dear, and see it almost again for the first time, threw fresh eyes. I'll never forget when I was in high school I was super into music, art, history, and nerd shit like World of Warcraft. I'll never forget the day that I was showing a friend the stuff I had earned in the game my "gear" that my character wore. That I worked hard for. I'm a nerdy white kid, and this other kid I knew who was all about that street life walked by doing his gangster walk. He's like a tough street kid that could scare a nerd. He walks by and sees what I'm showing my other nerdy friend. He says "Oh shit! Is that World of Warcraft?? You got fucking Sulfuras, Hand of Ragnaros?? (it's just a super rare and fancy weapon in the game) Wtf! That's crazy!!! Check out my Warrior he has Thunderfurry!" We instantly became friends after talking nerd shit for an entire hour. It blew my mind because we could not have been from two more different walks of life and in one instant, we both knew we were brothers. That's the type of feeling you get as a rap head when a metalhead comes around to the magic of rap, or visa versa. It's like how music is the universal language, you don't even have to understand the words for it to communicate with you. It's a magically thing if you are open and receptive to it.
Metallica will be remembered hundreds of years from now, because of this song, it is that good. There is a classical guitar player that does a version of this song, and it show just how great a song it is, played that way.
Hetfield wrote the song initially about missing his girlfriend while they were on the road but was meant to be interpreted however you’d like. I hardly listen to the song as a fan but when I do hear it I really appreciate its beauty and Hetfields writing. His solo is iconic.
My little brothers introduced me to Metallica in the lates 80's early 90's. Still to this day I have Metallica Days. I listen to them all day long. I can identify with most of their music. They are Awesome in concert too! Some of my favorites is the song ONE, UNFORGIVEN 1&2, DON'T TREAD ON ME and FADE TO BLACK. I really wish you would check some of these out! BTW I like watching you discover different types of Music. It take you on a journey if you let it. Thank you this is a great reaction. Keep it up!
Im a little late to this party but here goes... This was a song James wrote for his girl. He didn't want to "put it out there" so to speak. It's just one of those pieces of art that you want to keep just for yourself and your loved ones. But, he played it for Lars, and of course, Lars loved it and talked James into putting it out there. I'm glad he did. As a guitarist and musician, It's a simple song in terms of technical abilities. But that's not the point. It's not about how fast, heavy, technically proficient, etc. It's how it touches your soul. How it makes you feel. Some of the greatest pieces of music are basic chord progressions. But again, that's not a diss or the damn point. Definitely one of the most beautiful songs ever written IMO. I get flack for being a metalhead who absolutely adores this song. But people need to stop trying to change who they truly are just to fit in. F that nonsense! Be yourself, love yourself, and don't give a rat's arse about what people think of you. If you and your tribe are not on the same vibe and you're not being your genuine self, perhaps it's time to let go. Keep moving forward. You'll find your people and hopefully, your freedom to be yourself. Just be you. I know this because I went through it. This song got me through a lot. Glad I found your channel BP. I don't think it was a coincidence. Keep up the great work. P.S. I know you probably get loads of requests but I'll throw my two cents in anyway. METALLICA (THRASH): -The Four Horsemen -Master of Puppets -Creeping Death -Sanitarium WH. -Fade to Black PANTERA (GROVE METAL): -Five Minutes Alone -Cowboys From Hell -Cemetery Gates -I'm Broken -Hollow I could go on lol, and ramble on about labeled genres or classes/styles of metal. But to me, there are only two kinds of metal. Metal songs I like, and metal songs I don’t like. It's all subjective and personal preference. To each their own. Peace, love, truth, and freedom for all. Cheers from 🇨🇦'eh✌️
My husband and I had this as our first dance song at our wedding. I still get butterflies every time i listen to it. Just plain and simple, “Nothing else matters”.
The last consert I saw was Metallica in Phoenix AZ around 1998. Most hard rock bands do Ballads which are usually my favorites. This song to me is one to sit back, close your eyes and feel it. Depending on ones life experiences it could mean different things to each individual listining to it.
When you go down the rabbit hole of people playing hard rock on older instruments like pianos and harps, most sound ok. But Metallica always sounds amazing. Their songs are some of the best written music ever! Both with music and lyrics.
I think it was on Howard Stern Show, they played a clip of Elton John saying this was one of the best songs ever written, and James actually shed a tear!!
My first three CD's were bought on mail order from a music magazine. -One of those deals where you made a cheap subscription and got 3 free cds... I chose Metallicas Black ALbum, AC/DC Ballbreaker and Absolute Music #4. Still consider them the root of my music taste in general! LOL
It is so meaningful to me as a lifelong fan of Metallica that tou are willing to open yiur mind and heart to their music. The beauty of music is that it can being people together and add so much meaning to our life. Thank you for sharing your honest reactions because it helps me see new meaning even though ive been listening to thdm for 40 years.
I think it’s the band mates and also relationships you have with individuals. The outsiders don’t matter it’s whatever is between you and you have each other’s backs and nothing else matters.
You are educating other young artists and the people who watch your reactions. So many folks have a preconceived idea of what rock is and consists of and venture away from it when they really should just have a listen to the lyrics, the music and the vibe of the band and make their decision on their own. I love all genre’s of music from opera, classical, pop, country, rock and so on. Music touches our souls in so many ways and speaks to us in different languages. Thanks for sharing.
Better late than never!! It brings my soul so much joy to see you react to music that has inspired me for decades!!!! Binge watching the Metallica reactions❤❤ I love how much you love them. I learn so much about music that I love and I'm reminded why we all love them so much!!
Everyone used to read the lyrics... that was my first listen to every album I bought in my youth. Get home from the record store, headphones in, listen, read along, look at the artwork. It was a whole tactile, sensual experience.
For decades, I interpreted this song as simply living life on your own terms and being true to yourself. It wasn’t until I hit 40 that I had an epiphany that the lyrics were a love song. However, even knowing it’s a love song, now, I still believe it can easily be interpreted in other ways. The best songs always can be. Check out “Don’t Tread On Me” from this same album. With your appreciation for patriotism, you will feel that one.
Just found your channel and I am very entertained by your work. I love seeing your reactions to the music that was the backdrop of my life. This was the song my first bride walked down the aisle to at our wedding. Too bad the marriage didn’t age as well as the song.
@@danielanderson8980 it’s a banger. Most songs on that album are. It’s only the “purists” of thrash who dislike it. I like the first 4 albums as much as the purists but I also understand musical evolution and how times and sounds change. Show me a single band who’ve sounded the same and never evolved over 30 years or so and I’ll show you a band who fell off the radar….
I first heard this at age of 14. Relationship song. That's what I thought. Mid 20s. God. Now. Government telling you how to live. I think they put this together to represent all those. I seen a video like 6yrs ago of James and Larus talking about why they left California and moved to Colorado. And it was politics.
DAT TAPE!!! 🥹 Dude you just took me waaayyy back! I haven't heard that term since I was 14 years old and had a weekly show on a local radio station here in Denmark circa 1996. That's how we archived and stored everything on the radio!
how difficult life can be, but that we should always remember to live our lives and not let those things ruin us. It's about overcoming adversity and realizing that the tragedies of life are just something that happens to everyone, regardless of their position
I love how excited you get , my uncles used to jam out in the music room and when I was little we could hang out and it probably was the best part of going a playing with my cousins haha good shit and definitely brings me back to a simpler time of my life thank you 🔥🔥🙌🏼🙌🏼🐐🐐

I just drew more understanding of the lyrics. It’s closing ourself to the outside world “never caring for what they say” You’re living this song with every new review you do! You are caring, learning understanding that which previously was foreign to you! And the music is angelic at times, yet dark at other times

Keep it up!
"always be true to yourself" nothing else matters, is what I take from this song
That is the Beautiful thing about music people can take it in their own way 🤘🇺🇲🇺🇲🤘
Another One Of My All Time Favorites instant classic
METALLICA (THRASH):
-The Four Horsemen
-Master of Puppets
-Creeping Death
-Sanitarium WH.
-Fade to Black
PANTERA (GROVE METAL):
-Five Minutes Alone
-Cowboys From Hell
-Cemetery Gates
-I'm Broken
-Hollow
I could go on lol, and ramble on about labeled genres or classes/styles of metal. But to me, there are only two kinds of metal. Metal songs I like, and metal songs I don’t like. It's all subjective and personal preference. To each their own.
Peace, love, truth, and freedom for all. Cheers from 🇨🇦'eh✌️
One of my favorite instrumental song intros ever!
Great thing about music is it’s open to interpretation. It means what ever it means to you.
My favourite Metallica song 🎧 😊great reaction
You werent a Metal fan until Metallica and Rammstein. Thank you for the great reactions.
Greatest rock song ever written !! Way to go James !
I would rather have an honest first reaction. Thank you for being a real one
Beautiful song. One of my all time favourites.
One of the best Metalica Songs ever!!!!!!
i grew up on metallica. You should do a deep dive into their history
Thank you! Your honesty and outlook on life and learning is refreshing.
for me the song is about by myself, trust myself, i am great how i am, no matter what you say. you can't bring me down.
One great thing about Metallica is all the money they have donated to the charities all around the world.
Everything on that album Black is fire !!
Now this is a song that would be dope to see you sample/cover!
When you go down the rabbit hole of people playing hard rock on older instruments like pianos and harps, most sound ok. But Metallica always sounds amazing.
Their songs are some of the best written music ever! Both with music and lyrics.
I still remember getting the black album on cassette and riding my bike just jamming till the batteries died in my Walkman lol such a great memory.
I think it was on Howard Stern Show, they played a clip of Elton John saying this was one of the best songs ever written, and James actually shed a tear!!
This will always be my favorite song and video from Metallica. It is just so heartfelt.
This was my introduction to Metallica about 25 years ago and i never looked back 🖤
They dedicated this song to their fans!!💜💜🎶🎼🎵🎸🎤🥁🎧🎹🤘🤘🤘🔥🔥🔥
i always felt that he is just opening up for the first time, and saying how he feels, how he sees, lives life
the best produced album ever. shout out to Bob Rock for creating this legendary album
They are live so great!!Go and watch them live, they are so great!Love them!
i love your enthusiasm! This is how I have been about Metallica every day since high school!
Played it on our Wedding. Love it forever!
Snd also, please! Do more metallica live! They sound as best live!! So much energy!!!
I've always viewed this song as an ode to their fans.
Fade to black and One by Metallica are a MUST!!!!!!!!!!!
Art is open to interpretation, this is one of the first songs I learnt to play on guitar and sing. Metal bands write the best slow songs.
Thanks for being real
It's never too late to get out of your comfort zone. Keep going! There's so much more or there.
I think it’s the band mates and also relationships you have with individuals. The outsiders don’t matter it’s whatever is between you and you have each other’s backs and nothing else matters.
I know it’s not matallica, but I would love to hear “Winds of change “ by the Scorpions it’s got a good vibe like we are all brothers
One from Metallica is one of the best songs ever about the war in Vietnam. I am blown away every time I hear it they have so many hits it is nuts.
It came out many years after the end of the Vietnam War and is about Hetfeld's girlfriend, not the war
My nephew played this for me at my wedding. To me it's about the ultimate acceptance of whatever you love.
GREAT reaction, to a GREAT tune!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Just found your channel and I am very entertained by your work. I love seeing your reactions to the music that was the backdrop of my life.
This was the song my first bride walked down the aisle to at our wedding. Too bad the marriage didn’t age as well as the song.
One of my favourite songs ever!
FAMILY
Nothing Else Matters
& you are my BrotherofanotherMother !
If you like the “don’t tread on me” logo, you have to hear their song “Don’t Tread on Me”….. the first words of that song are “Liberty or Death”….
Ridiculously slept on song. Don’t Tread On Me is an absolute favorite.
@@fattony986 agreed. The black album got me into the rest of their stuff and it remains my personal favorite.
I first heard this at age of 14. Relationship song. That's what I thought. Mid 20s. God. Now. Government telling you how to live. I think they put this together to represent all those. I seen a video like 6yrs ago of James and Larus talking about why they left California and moved to Colorado. And it was politics.
I think it is a love song
I love how excited you get , my uncles used to jam out in the music room and when I was little we could hang out and it probably was the best part of going a playing with my cousins haha good shit and definitely brings me back to a simpler time of my life thank you 🔥🔥🙌🏼🙌🏼🐐🐐
wonderful how you put your faith in God front and center in your life, followed by your family. may our Lord continue to bless you and yours.
You dont have to explain your reaction my man its spot on 👍👏
Im 57, 1st convert Ella Fitzgerald, loved metql but lovebrap. 2st was sugar hill, run, kurtis, eric b, fat boys. Let us all experience all music. God bless
Just found your channel today and got through many videos - really apprechiate your content and your love for my fafourite music... Thanks bro
I just drew more understanding of the lyrics.
It’s closing ourself to the outside world “never caring for what they say”
You’re living this song with every new review you do!
You are caring, learning understanding that which previously was foreign to you! And the music is angelic at times, yet dark at other times
