As a safety/ergonomics guy, since you will be doing a lot of computer work, you should make the seat/height of the desk/char table as close to your sitting elbow height to minimize ergonomic stressors on your wrists/arms/shoulders. A seat back you can install/remove will also help ergonomically. Back support is helpful and important too! Chart table height was designed for using compasses, dividers and writing. different task and requirements. Typing should really be a few inches above your knees.
As a professional software guy, I agree. 25 years ago I didn't understand this and almost crippled my right wrist.
One option is a keyboard/mouse shelf at elbow height, under the desk. That leaves the desk top at the right height for chart work, and uncluttered by computer stuff. If you're working on a laptop, it also gets the screen up to a better height. Laptop keyboards are ergonomically terrible.
Excellent suggestions! Even adding a goofy looking ergonomic mouse helps as well.
Special compliment Maya on the soundtrack in general: great sound quality of the spoken parts, but especially the background music blending into the sounds of scissors, hammer, measuring tape etc. Real treat for music/sound lovers!
Isn't it great when your compromise actually turns out to be a huge improvement? The new seat sounds like it will be much more comfortable than the old one. Beautiful violin selection today. Thanks to both of you for bringing your talents to the world via UA-cam. It is always enjoyable to watch.
The music is always a big part of what makes your videos so enjoyable. The boatyard sessions are a wonderful addition to the soundtrack. I hope you keep it up. A drywall knife, 4" or so, will make mixing and applying the fairing compound easier.
Aladino: Underneath everything there is a sailboat just waiting to shoulder into a long offshore swell. Damn, I do miss my Cape George!
Maya: I just browsed through your book-length history. Great job of videography! ps: More music! I love that jam session back in the Magic Carpet I days, and your music just fills the room.
Your chart table compromise isn't the one I'd choose, but it isn't me doing the compromising! If I ever have the chance to design another chart table/work station it will start from an ergonomic automotive racing seat.
A couple of additions to the Quarter berth--- fit a detachable lee cloth to the head of the berth to keep the pillow from escaping as you pound into that offshore swell. And the trotter box at the foot mentioned by another poster is well worth while.
I spent 4 years on a steel aircraft carrier. I am so Impressed with how this is coming together, Aledino you are a good craftsman. Very nice work and the partally finished boat is looking really good. well done to both of you.
Brings back fond memories of when we did a complete refit of our 1965 Pearson Invicta including laying out a new interior plan. We did many mock-ups of a new dinette, freezer box and nav station it made our heads spin; ). You two are doing fantastic work and documenting it so well. Fair refit and future winds to you both!
Another compromise or enhancement for the quarter berth / chart table dilemma is to create a 'foot box' for the quarter berth, big enough for feet and bedding, perhaps 15cm or so deep. I know that would breach the new bulkhead but the volume lost is well worth the increase in chart table usability. Additionally the quarter berth occupant may appreciate a little extra separation betwixt navigator and the occupant's head(?s).
The Total Boat fairing compound being a greenish / grey colour mixed, reminds me of 'Plastic Padding' a two part adhesive/filler, great for patching up small playwood dinghies, when emergencies arose.
Just a suggestion - but what if you used the backrest as a hinged bed-extender. - want more lenght; just flip it up. Helps with keeping the pillow in the bed :D
A chart table is indeed something i find to be necessary on long(er) passages . Although you will probably be navigating electronically , it is always recommended to keep your position also on a paper chart . Just in case you might have electric or electronic problems .
Production values are great. The way you introduced the dilema, ( short dialogue) gave us a good visiual (no need to stop the clip) to give us the dilema...excellent...and so subtle..on to the story.
I agree. The more I watch other uTubers the more I realize how marvellously you edit and manage your story.
Totally relate to the potential for claustrophobia in the Torpedo berth. I did the Pacific Cup and many time our crew rotation required that i deal with my newly found sense of that condition. The only thing that saved me was my ability to have it enough forward that I could look out the companionway any time. And I was also comforted by the huge forsails packed in on either side of me to keep me in one place! Yeah and you are below the waterline when on a good heal and can hear the movement of water against the outer hull. Good thinking to allow that berth to move forward a bit in the event you have people like me aboard!
Perhaps I’m off on dimensions , but it appears that the current chart table is deeper than wide ..the way I envisioned it was to sit at the table from center isle facing starboard …it seems there is enough room to still have deep table and room for swing out stool that would not obstruct passage…not sure if it gives enough room for cooler , but it would allow quarter berth to come all the way forward to bulkhead at desk…
I know forward facing would be best at sea, but this is not uncommon arrangement…you guys are great at this, so I will look forward to see what you do..
Looking good!
Another reason why I appreciate you two:
You still drive your Mazda Protegé ! I had a Mazda 323 DL lil' hatchback for years then the Protegé, same color as your's.
Awesome, tough little cars. Very reliable cars.
I have to say that I like your channel and quality of videos . The work you are doing on your sailboat is excellent . Layout of an older boat is always a compromise due to volume constraints . Have a look at a Ticon 30 layout which has a similar layout to your boat .
It had a very unique folding bulkhead table arrangment with a slide out extention that could work in your boat for more table space .
Great episode, excellent storytelling, and wonderful music. Thanks guys!
I really enjoy the thoroughness of what you are doing. You will have great peace of mind in open waters knowing that you have good bones in that boat. Otherwise it's just lipstick and mascara and that is no good. Keep up the good work!!!
Great to see your progress. I too have to pull out my fridge/chart table.
Installing a new fridge and draws. Also replacing the 1970's volvo penta with an electric motor.
14kV made in Milwaukee USA.
From what I remember seeing in videos by Louis Sauzedde (Tips from a Shipwright, excellent YT channel!) is that this TotalFair stuff can save you a lot of sanding and fairing work as it can produce a finished fair surface in just one application - no repeated applications necessary!
Again, the level of proffessionalism and competence is outstanding. I learn so much with respect to doing jobs on my boat.
You guys are fantastic i really loved todays tune you are both a delight and i find myself looking forwards to my Friday nights. Much love to you both
I love how your relationship shines through in this videos, it's so real, and respectful, and gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling about the future of the world.
Always!!! Love the artful music and getting a glimpse of an artist at work. Will be kind of sad when it is finished.
Thank You!! You make my weeks grateful.
Watching you work while you ply your exquisite music adds a great dimension to the videos.
You guys are so talented! Your new home is really coming along wonderfully!
Hey what's up. must admit that you are doing a fantastic job with the boat. it is a joy to see what professional craftsmanship you perform and what sharp eye you have for details. a question to Maya. Have you ever played the Norwegian violin "Haring fela" It is a violin with 8 strings, 4 strings that you play on (like a regular violin) but have 4 extra strings under the ones you play on that create resonant sounds? Continue to create magic with the magic carpet and take care of yourself ⛵️👍
Wow! I can’t imagine sleeping in that confined space.
Great work!
Beautiful piece Maya!
Awesome when a plan comes together. Great job again!
You guys probably already finished the chart table/desk, but you should check out how the Jeanneau 440 is set up. Might give you a couple of design cues you haven't considered. Thanks for bringing us along!
Great video, great editing, amazing violin play. Thanks!
I especially loved the soundtrack to tonight's episode. The tracks make the progress of the boat work enjoyable to watch!
I always enjoy these videos, and your music just gets better and better.
I suggest you add a toe space to the chart table similar to that under kitchen benches. It will make it more comfortable when sitting for long periods but won’t sacrifice much useful storage.
Cheers, Stephen.
Lack of toe kicks in smaller yachts is a deficiency that drives me crazy. You cannot support yourself with the front of your thighs when working at a counter surface and it means that your lower back takes all the strain. Also, a folding or collapsible back rest for long hours of video editing would be a must for me, again to assist the back. Good job! Press on !
Very enjoyable to watch, great that you worked out a good solution for the chart table and quarter berth. Awesome violins composition and playing! Thanks Mike
If you add a seat back to the chart table seat, you could make it fold forward to extend the quarter berth. Excellent workmanship as usual!
I'm in love with the uncompromising nature of this refit. This is going to be such an awesome boat!
Another lovely video! Loved the tune and the music throughout today very much.
Love the channel, love the refit, loooove The Boatyard Sessions. I'm bluegrass fiddler and mandolinist.
Looking better all the time! Great song! Thank you for sharing!
Thank you SOOO much for your beautiful violin music!
the amount of talent the two of you have is pretty startling. thanks for the video
Your videos are absolutely pleasure to watch !🙏🌸
Awesome Boatyard Session this week … and the Ah Ha moment when i realised t was you who recorded the track which plays offer your night sky intro 😍. I feel like you would be a Seth Lakeman fan x
Great progress on the boat. I really like your music, it brings back a lot of memories.
Love your violin music!!!!! It speaks to the soul. Keep up the good work.
I’m not sure what I look forward to the most, the boat work, or the music. Why choose though, it’s all here. My greedy side wishes for more while my better self says be appreciative that it exists in the first place. As always, great work. Love the title sequence by the way.
Wow! each video the boat is becoming absolutely stunning. But my favorite time is the boat yard music time. Honestly i could listen to you play all day long.
PeaceAndLove
Lori
Awesome show and music!
Thanks!
Great progress and concert grade musical interlude !!!
It’s absolutely amazing what you are both achieving!! When do you think you will get back to sailing in your beautiful new home? Your have such superb attention to detail.
Great episode. It,s really starting to come together. Thanks for the upload.
It's looking very nice! I am excited for you guys!!!
Great episode guys, we love seeing your progress each week! So satisfying watching you mix the TotalFair too!
The videos + music are awesome. Both of you are just. Super.
Can't wait to see Magic Carpet stepped (mast upright, I might have misspelled that).
What are you going to 'step' in her soul?
Love from Amsterdam, maybe we'll meet :)
I can't wait to see it 3 months from now! Looking great! thanks, from Port Angeles.
Love your Violin. And attitudes! 😙
Well having made a chest of drawers or two in my day, I would put the bottom part in because it’s kind of like the carcass of a chest of drawers that you would always make first and then fit your drawers into the carcass which you could do from both the top and front. Once you have all your drawers set then you can put your top on, in this case your counter.
Enjoyed the music in this episode more than usual, thanks for sharing 💜
Agree!
Great episode! Stay safe and keep rolling!! 👍👍
9:52 I "slept" in a "torpedo tube" one night in a 28 ft sailing boat and it was terrible. And it was only a 3/4 "torpedo tube" with the head quarter open. If it was a whole "torpedo tube" I would not have slept at all. So claustrophobic with just 3/4 even!
You Speak so quietly, yet when you play your Violin, your Heart just sings loudly with Pride. Awesome Guys, keep going. Magic Carpet really is turning out to be Magic. Kiaora.
Maya, the Chieftains need to sign yoiu up. Ha! I really enjoyed listening and watching you play this piece. My, how the boat work is moving right along. Looking forward to splashing Magic Carpet II.
I loved the way you could tape off the bulkhead without missing a beat on the violin!
Loved today's Boatyard Session selection. It really was a delightful part of the video.
Très plaisant à regarder.
Merci pour ce partage.
My parrot loves to hear your music!
I can tell right now that boat interior is going to be spectacular. Nice 👍💥
Great job you two, loved the music as well.
Love to hear you play. It’s completely awesome.
i dont have your boat layout present, when it comes to to tanks , but all that space below the quarter berth would be great for a integral water/diesel tank. its low, close to centreline and yielding a fair volume. and not that difficult/time consuming to build. i would turn that quarter berth into a technical room with all the electric bits of kit one needs nowadays, plus tools, but i get it that you want/need space for the occasional crew specially if your main salon side seating arent long enough for a human to lay down. . i had it easy in my 29 footer, because its a 29 footer! thus one can cut the chase when compromising: its a 2 person boat max. period. and my side berths can both fit a person so the accomodation is solved. bigger boat, bigger compromises. excellent work and music as always
The water tanks are nicely taken care of in our full keel. No need for more under the quarter berth. That is where we will install batteries and electrical components though:)
@@SailingMagicCarpet thats great, having them on the keel is THE place!
Love your channel and you and Aladino's terrific synergy! The music is an amazing bonus!
Thank you for sharing some good information on the products you use
Caught an old episode after this one; the inside of Magic Carpet 1 looks so low and cramped by comparison! You're so right about how light it gets when you get paint it white.
Another excellent video... well done guys
I think that was the first time watching UA-cam that I closed my eyes and just enjoyed the music. Thanks so much!
If you take the plain blade for the Fine/Multitool and file grooves/teeth in it. You will never have to buy another blade, just touch it up when it gets dull. One downside though. It smokes a lot more.
I do it too personnally, using my Dremel. I wear them and "regrove" them 5 at a time. Takes what, 30 minutes ?
Saves me a lot $$.
I was put to sleep by nice violin playing and when I woke up, everything had finished.... not the boat project but the episode. :)
I'm learning so much from you guys, I'm doing some glas work on my Albin vega and everything i know about glas work is from my UA-cam glasfiber mentor Aladino 😁
Maya you played one of my favorite tunes in one of the early episodes "Gillies" by wolfstone and i really want to find the episode, can you by any chance remember which episode it is.
Keep up the good work 💪
Epoxy is not cheap either !!! CHEERS from Southwest Vancouver Island! P.S. I recently watched a UA-cam vid.showing how to sharpen multi-tool blade with a three sided file. Not difficult and good results! A blade that has been cutting fiberglass is likely toast!
Love the work guys!
Beautiful tune!
Just really love your journey. New Zealand.
This episode just few by, just goes to show how much I enjoy these videos. Have a good one. eh!
I know this comment is way too late, but I would have moved the chart table to be part of the extension of the quarter berth, and had the seat positioned against the bulkhead. That way, you would have plenty of space for the quarter berth on the odd occasion someone sleeps in it, and the rest of the time, you'd have a great size chart table still.
Also see sailing Uma 225 for interior design. Brilliant uses of space
I have used quite a lot of the Total Fair, good stuff. Have you given any thoughts about storage for your charts? They always seem to take more space than allocated. We use the Chart Kits which are large wire bound books, convenient for navigation, problematic to store.
Im sure we will find a good spot given the large table that we have:) to be honest we are not quite at the stage of thinking where to store charts😝
Thanks guys great video
Like the wasp bonus at the end!
Where’s ya Copenhagen? 🤣
Great work!
That was a great solution! 👍
It's too bad you guys don't live just down the road for me. Then I could have volunteered and you could have taught me hands on how to do this and then maybe some of my compensation would be getting to use some of your epoxy and fiberglass. Well and your tools.
In my experience... since meal prep and clean up tends to be continuous while cruising... office work is kept far away and in the saloon.
Could you reinforce the underneath of the table and put blocks under the corner of the berth, then have a slot in extension board above the seat that can be added or removed to extend the berth?
I was thinking about the same but as flip up - or down - panel. 👍
Pity, on the amazing yet simple solution to the chart table and V berth as, watching a fight between loving and caring couple would have been interesting.🤣
Love the music!
wow nice job . why do you put several layers fiberglass on the inner side of the hull ? to strengthen it ?
You guys are amazing ❤️
Such an enjoyable episode. Smiles all arouns
You two are the greatest!!
Love the music played by Maja
