Kenny Rogers actually plays a slightly bigger role than just being a guest singer. Several days before the recording occurred, Lionel, Stevie, Michael and Quincy met up at Kenny's recording studio to record basic music and lyric tracks for the participating artists. Kenny had recording engineers, studio musicians and other needed personnel there to help get the project off the ground.
I've heard this song a million times in my life, you have given it a new and great perspective. It was such a historical phenomenon that these incredible artist donated portions of their performance ability to a larger song. I was a fan of most of them at the time and was tickled when it was on the charts.
There are 46 major singers/pop stars in that room. Lionel Richie hosted the American Music Awards, then immediately after, he, MJ & Quincy Jones assembled them all and recorded this song, for charity, from 10pm to 7am the next day. 9 hours they all stayed in that studio to perfect this beautiful piece of music. Written by MJ and Lionel Richie and Composed by Quincy Jones. They had sandwiches and fried chicken meals brought in as well as wine and beer.
Everyone involved brought their own unique sound to the recording. Blended all together, it works. Awesome song, Awesome artists & definitely a special song of my generation no matter how many try to tear certain sections down almost 40 years later. ❤
Stevie Wonder has one of the most beautiful voices ever - all of these singers are amazing but something about the quality and character of his voice is otherwordly.

You just know Michael was side-eyeing Cindy Lauper's section. 😂
Michael was just a Natural flawless
Quincy knew he was . That’s why he put him with Stevie. Great call Quince!!!!
Every part I think “this is my favorite part” … until another part comes along. But the part that always gives me chills is Bruce.
Love your comment. We’re so blessed to still have him with us. He & Michael are such angels.
Amazing to see such an in depth analysis by a professional
I simply love this video and still got chills when they sing as a united choir, We are the world, we are the children, God's children! My ultimate favorite part now, and has been for years, is when Dionne Warwick sings her part. It still brings tears to my eyes every time I hear her!😘😘💜😐😁🎵💙🎤🎹🎹🎼🎶
Sadly, we will NEVER see this again!! SO many awesome voices GONE TOO SOON!!❤
These are all masters of their craft. No electronic shortcuts. Just masters of their craft.
Love Dionne Warwick's part ...
I really appreciate this great exercise in this video. A lot of thanks for sharing your knowledge with us about voice teaching.
I just stumbled upon this vocal analysis of one of the most important songs of the 1980s, --and of my teenage years.
Your observations are very estute, and your enthusiasm is contagious! Thank you! And you have great pipes yourself.
I just subscribed.
I sm totally here for the comments...let's go!!!

I will never tire of this song. All time favorite
I always love hearing Kenny Loggins, Darryl Hall, and Steve Perry in the second half of the ad lib part. Stevie, Dionne, and Kenny Rogers are my favorite first half ad lib singers. Dionne BROUGHT IT! And Kenny's voice was gorgeous in that harmony with Paul. And Stevie is Stevie.... I have no words for him because he's always going to give a FANTASTIC vocal performance
What this song proved to me is that we like singers with distinctive voices. We didn’t need the music video to know who was singing. You know MJ, Wonder, Charles, Springsteen, Lauper, Turner, Simon, Rogers, Nelson, Lewis, Jarreau, Joel, Warwick when you hear them. (I did need the video for Loggins, Perry, and Ingram).
I love that picture of Karen clark sheard behind you
