All voices and no auto tune, think about that for a minute.
AMEN!
Great time in music!
Yeah when talent and music was real and great
Comment number 73237722893 that they didn’t have Autotune back then. We don’t have to think about it, because we know.
Dude you have no idea what autotune is. EVERY SINGER needs autotune. It has nothing to do with sounding robotic or whatever but it stabilizes your voice and makes it a recording voice by smoothen it out.. and yes even these legends had autotune on their mics
Steve Perry from Journey just hits different
Certainly!
Steve perry, kenny rogers and cyndi lauper for me
For me he's the stand out . Second is obviously Micheal !

The mixing of Bruce Springsteen & Stevie Wonder is pure gold
Right, they're both still alive, they should collab.
I love bruce springsteen and I'm 16, guess I just have good taste
They sound good together
Stevie Wonder well known to be possible greatest artist of all time.
It is my favorite part of the song!
I’m sad that nobody ever recognizes my guy Kenny loggins 😭
I know right? one of the best voices on here.
💯🎯
Yes they do. I've watched like 10 or more reactors to this and everyone (men too) got giddy when Kenny came on
Kenny loggi s killed it along with Cindy Lauper
Can go wrong with any them.
As an 80s kid, this was everything. We watched on MTV, when MTV was first to release any video.
The little grouping of Kenny Loggins, Steve Perry and Daryl Hall is total magic, as is the entire song: Tina Turner with Billy Joel! Dionne Warwick with Willie Nelson! Amazing
Love the underlying message of unity. Race, gender, age, genre, none of that mattered. ❤

I miss these days. This is when we worked together to build something instead of tearing each other down to make us feel better about our lives. Brought tears to my eyes❤🇺🇸☮🤟

Wow! Thank you! All these “young” reaction video UA-camrs need to know this! Help them Lord
One of the great things about this is that when it was released & you heard it on the radio, you could recognize each of the distinctive voices on their own & knew who was singing each line. Brilliant in that aspect alone, but then seeing the video added great emotional power to see them all singing together. Still moving to this very day!
I remember when this was done. It was a moving moment. They raised so much money. Such talent all together ❤ we have lost many of them. RIP

How did we go from this to the division we have today? It’s so sad for real. This song was recorded when I was just a kid and I felt it. I feel so blessed to have grown up with all these beautiful peoples voices. I knew them all, when they stepped up to sing. I agree Whitney should have been there. The 80s were the best!!!
Why Whitney Houston wasn't there: "We Are the World" was released in January of 1985. Whitney Houston's first album was released the following month, but didn't catch on until later in the year. When this was recorded, she wasn't yet a star, so wouldn't have been invited to participate. But her cousin Dionne Warwick, a star since the 1960s, was there.
Thank you for that 💯🙏🏾

More than likely a timing issue. There could be multiple reasons. Simply might have had a contractual obligation somewhere else.

MJ THE GOAT 💯 Love his parts and Springsteens & Stevies the most!!
I was 5 when this came out and everybody on the planet was singing this song. R.I.P. Michael Jackson. We miss you!!!
Dionne Warwick and Cyndi Lauper's parts been giving me chills since the 80's.
A bar where I was going to college had a retro night, and the DJ would always finish up with "We Are The World". It was tradition. The first time he skipped it, I belted out the chorus as a form of protest. After everyone else had joined in singing, the DJ gave in and played it for us. Student protest in action.
That's a worthy student protest!👍😊 Love this song!

The part with Stevie and Bruce hits so different for me because of the contrasting voices. Both shining in different ways.
Cyndi crushed it. For a guy who really isn’t a great singer Bruce crushed it too. Stevie, MJ, and Ray Charles were legendary as well. They all nailed it but some left you awed.
It doesn’t matter how many times I heard this song, it always brings a tear to my eyes. So happy that your sister is feeling better Jai! I will continue to keep you, her, Half, and the rest of your family!
I still listen to this song quite often. So many great singers in this song.
Some of those you may not have recognized, are Paul Simon (from Simon & Garfunkel) singing with Kenny Rogers, James Ingrams, Dion Warwick, Willie Nelson, Bruce Springsteen, Kenny Loggins, (Loggins & Mesina) Billy Joel, Steve Perry from Journey, Cyndi Lauper, Kim Carnes, Huey Lewis, Bob Dylan, Hall & Oats. Quincy Jones put it together & told all of them to leave their ego's at the door. This was a fund raiser for Africa.
Feeling like an antique right now lol. I was 14 when this was released. Legendary! Still love this as much as I did then. If I'm correct this was around the same time whitney had her 1st album and was just starting to get established as a major artist.
I'll make you feel young again. I was 35 when this came out !!! 😯

LiveAid in the UK, organized by Bob Geldof and was a concert with acts including Queen for the same reason Michael and Quincy did the song We Are The World.
Pretty sure Dionne Warwick is Whitney Houston's cousin, not her aunt.
@@Historian212 You are correct, Whitney was Dionne's cousin.
@@Historian212 you’re 100% correct, I always knew this but tonight my brain isn’t functioning well.
Ya'lls reaction to this brightened my day. Thank you. This song is like going to church.
Jai I genuinely loved your reaction to each singer! We need to listen to this everyday!
We sang this in choir in my elementary school, too!
Half and Jai, you can thank Quincy Jones for the couplings of singers in this video. And only Quincy could get all of these great artists together in one place. Unfortunately, we will never see the likes of this again since a few of these legends have since passed away. I am sure if he wanted, Quincy could organize another collection of great artists for a similar project! And I would love to see that! It didn't hurt that he, Michael Jackson, and Lionel Richie came together to head up this project. WHAT PERFORMER IN THEIR RIGHT MIND COULD SAY NO TO THOSE THREE LEGENDS? Unfortunately, Whitney Houston was not in this video as her career had just started. Maybe, if this project was done a couple of years later, she would have been it. Even without her, this was a once in a lifetime event! It's a shame that we can't get artists to do this more often since there are so many worthy causes out there to support. And not that it matters, so please readers don't take this the wrong way! 3 POWERFUL BLACK MEN MADE THIS HAPPEN! BE PROUD OF THEM! What are the rest of us waiting for?
The inimitable Q! Quincy Jones assembled the choir and led them to glory with this. Watching it live with all my friends and their kids was indescribable. The kids asked questions and then every last one of those kids emptied their piggy banks to donate! Magic happens when we work together! Continued prayers for you and yours, Half and Jai!!
I love this song the most, because in this recording studio there was no racism.
A lot of heavy metal artists got together to make their own song like this after this one came out. Y'all should check it out. It's not as good as this one, but it's not bad either. Hear N Aid - "We're Stars"
I LOVE Stars by Hear N Aid!!!
I love that song. RIP Ronnie James Dio, that was his project.

Fun Fact: At 8:04 The guy in the top left with the dark glasses & tie is none other than the Legendary actor Dan Aykroyd. Most know him from SNL, Ghostbusters, Trading Places, My Girl, The Great Outdoors, Cones Heads, The Blues Brothers, etc. The reason he was there.. He is Elwood Blues !!!
I remember singing this in elementary school at one of our events we had for the parents and teachers. I had the Willie Nelson part
FYI, this song was recorded in March 1985. Whitney's 1st album/cd came out in early in Feb 1985, she wasn't quite the superstar that we all remember. Everyone of these artists were the greatest in the 60s , 70s and early 80s.
I love this song!!! I was only 5 when this song came out... But I'm a forever Michael Jackson fan... So anything he was in I was all for!! May the King of Pop Rest in Peace!!!
I was 9 when I first heard, and fell in love with, Michael Jackson and his music, from Off The Wall, and my favorite version of Wizard of Oz was The Wiz with Michael, Diana Ross, Nipsey Russell, Ted Ross, Mabel King, and Theresa Merritt. I admit I had to look up Ted Ross on. Richard Pryor and Lena Horne were also in it, I am so ashamed I missed them.
Same here 🥰
I still say my generation had the best music ever!
This was part of Live Aid for starving kids in Africa. Queen playing live with the white piano? That was the closing of the fundraiser. This was the big promo song. Way before Whitney Houston was discovered.
You won't ever see singers that legendary again. Especially in the same room for a good cause.
That back and fourth between Bruce and Stevie. Brilliant
I’m old - I remember when this came out. Message is timeless. ☮️
And Jai gurl - you look fahhhbulous!
Dan Aykroyd was of course half of the Blues Brothers, who had the #1 movie, #1 tv show, and #1 album all at the same time in 1980.
I was a child when i first heard this and liked to sing along but didn't understand how powerful it was until i got older🎶🔥🎶

I looooooooove this song, I was almost 8 years old back then when it was recorded, it was released on March 7, 1985 and produced by Columbia Records! Greetings from Puerto Rico!!
We need more of these songs for everyone to realize, giving, kindness and love for all makes such a difference. The way God intended for us all to be.
Fun fact...this was recorded in the middle of the night after an awards show. Instead of attending the after parties they chose to go into the studio and record this song. It was done in one take
I was totally having a *meh* day. Then Half and Jai uploaded and now I’m crying happy tears. You guys have excellent timing. Amazing how after all of these years that message is still spot on. I have nothing but love for you both! 😘❤️♾
Editing to tell Jai that she looks beautiful! ❤️
The part where Bruce and Stevie have their mash up was added later..This was written by Quincy Jones and he felt something needed to be added so Bruce and Stevie were closest to the studio and went back.. Stevie changed his shirt... This was recorded after an awards show and all the stars stayed up all night to record it... I was 15 when this was released and ya it was very popular.
I remember this video being played back in the day but didn't appreciate it, now I do and love it. Good vibes baby 👍👍✌✌
Crying like a baby watching this. I heard Producer Quincy Jones told the stars to Check Their Egos at the Door! And they ALL did.
Love seeing your reactions to each artist especially when you consider how many you recognize because of your channel. Great song, great charity effort with almost every cent going to food, tragic conclusion. A shame we don't have the talent today to make something like this or a Michael Jackson to pull them all together
Dionne Warwick, Whitney's cousin, sings the part "Send them your heart" and duets with Willie Nelson. Most likely Whitney had not become famous enough at the time this was recorded. In many interviews and documentaries regarding the making of "We Are the World", it is said that there was limited space, so decisions had to be made. They were of course looking for artists who were popular (at that time) and some artists just weren't able to change their schedules to participate. Other artists (like Prince or he who was previously known as Prince) couldn't put aside their egos and so had to be left out. I still don't understand how some people got into the room but I am sure at least some of it had to do with relationships.
Harry Bellefonte (he is seen standing on the top row next to Dan Aykroyd) was the one who had the original idea to do "We Are the World". He was inspired by British artist, who had done "Do They Know It's Christmas" the previous year.
Lionel Richie and Kenny Rogers (who are close friends) were the first two artists asked and agreed to participate. The first recording session took place in Kenny Rogers private studios. They brought in Stevie Wonder to add Star power to the project and also Quincy Jones to handle the production. Quincy was able to talk to Michael Jackson, who was very enthusiastic for the project and told Lionel Richie that he wanted to be involved in the writing of the song.
I remember it very well.
Was in my late 20's I believe.
So very true about Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles. I bet they hear things that the others don't because they're completely dependent on sound. Music geniuses right there! Brilliant!
Jai, THAT HAIR!! You are gorgeous with or without that color but girl, it looks fire. I'm always sending you and Half some love, beautiful!
I was 16 years old when this song came out and was in the middle of my teenage years listening to all these artists. This song was iconic then and is just plain legendary now.
A couple artists on this track that I think you haven't reacted to them yet, that I think you would enjoy reacting to, Harry Belafonte and The Pointer Sisters.
LMAO now i know where he got his mustache from...No cap though the world needs to listen to this song at the same time.
If you look close there is a tear in Bruce Springsteen’s eye.

If you had a unbelievable dream of a musical experience.... this would be it.
I remember I heard that Paul Simon said prior to recording this he looked around and said " you know if a bomb dropped on this room john Denver will shoot up to #1"
Everybody cracked up.
my dear ones in 1984 I was 28 years old. I was young and listening to this song. I am very happy when I see you that you like the music of my youth
This was recorded in 1985…pre-Whitney. Otherwise, no doubt she’d be there! You should watch the remake with more current artists for Haiti and compare. Nothing beats the original, but they definitely put their own spin on it :)
Whitney Houston was signed in 1983 by Clive Davis. She was not yet famous as she would turn out to be "a legend". Her first album hadn't been released. No one knows if she had been asked and had pryer commitments. We are the World was suddenly thrown together in a matter of days in response of USA for Africa.
Actor Harry Belefonte' saw a British version of a record fundraiser and approached Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie. That's when they planned to record the song the night of the AMA'S (down the street from the recording studio) to guarantee the artist would be available. The rest is history!

Stevie's voice will always remain unchallenged in my ears. I instantly know the man's voice.
I don't know how old or young you are, but this was a big part of my childhood. If this doesn't touch you to your core, man, we are the world, we are the children. We should all live as one. This is an anthem for us all.
I was 7 years old when this song was released. My mom blasted through the house everyday until super bowl Sunday. The Bears were in it that year and we're from Chicago. This was the beat year of my childhood. So you can imagine how wonderfully nostalgic it makes me.
This song NEEDS to be on constant repeat in this world! You will never see such a bunch of talented artists in the same room like this EVER! Quincey invited ONLY the best and those that had NO EGO! It has been said that he even posted at the entrance to the studio to check your ego at the door. No Ego, No pay, Just each individual contributing straight from the heart and soul for a great cause! They certainly don't make artist like that anymore.
This song and video were done over several hours in one night after the Grammy Awards, I think in 1984 or '85. Some of the artists had to come in to add adlibs and whatnot. James Ingram, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, and probably Bruce Springsteen came in to add more vocals to the song. There is a whole documentary on it and you can find it on UA-cam. At the time, Whitney wasn't as huge a star as the other legends in the room. She was still a new artist. I can't believe I remember when Whitney Houston was just starting out!
Jai is killing it with the new hair style like yeah girl you better rock that color
You guys should react to the We are the world the Haiti one it’s not better then this but definitely impacting also
Ray Charles is an absolute LEGEND. The kind of Legend who can stand out in a room FULL of Legends.
It still cracks me up that when they do the shots of the whole choir, it's all these legendary singers....and Dan Akroyd. :P
Whitney wasn't there because no one knew who she was at that point. Her first single didn't come out until August of '85. This song came out in April of '85.
They organized it to record the voices right after the Grammys that year, so that they could get as many artists together as possible, & let them know to check their ego at the door. Whitney’s 1st joint had just come out the same year as this, so she wasn’t quite an established artist as those on this recording yet, but it was only a matter of time. Also, the one who started the verse after Michael & Diana Ross finished their chorus, is Dionne Warwick, who is a cousin to Whitney.
This is example of the American spirit. We need it back come on America where you at?!! It starts with us. Spread message of the song
Absolutely beautiful every time I hear this song makes me smile
You guys mentioned it briefly, there was a sign on the front door that read; "Check your egos at the door". Harry Belafonte had the idea of doing this, told his manager to call upon other artists' managers. Michael was the first call they made, he said yes immediately. The group was assembled, the recording took place at Kenny Rogers' record studio because it was the biggest and could fit everyone comfortly. Madonna wasn't invited even though she huge then. Country legend Waylon Jennings was invited and showed up, but he left when the song was completed. He said, "I'm a country singer and I ain't singing no pop song".
You can feel deep in your heart that these amount of grear artists are squeezing their souls in every word and verse.
I think every school choir/elementary school music class had to sing this song in a school concert! I was in middle school and I wasn’t in choir so I didn’t have to sing this! But two of my younger sisters did! They were both in elementary school and the whole school had to learn it and sing it! My youngest sister was about three when this song came out so she wasn’t in school yet! Also, you can find a full listing of the artists and crew on the Wikipedia listing for We Are The World/USA for Africa! The list includes the order of solo performers and also the choir performers! Dan Aykroyd was part of the choir! He’s in the back row and is wearing glasses! And Harry Belafonte is also in the choir! And Waylon Jennings is there! This was recorded January 28, 1985 and Whitney’s first album was released February 14, 1985 according to Wikipedia! So, she wasn’t big yet!
Great choice of song to react to!! This song was inspired from an English singer named Bob Geldof from a band called The Boomtown Rats he was upset after a visit to Ethiopia and saw the famine with families starving so he wrote a song called Do They Know Its Christmastime At All and got some of the most famous British singers of that time! He then got together with Quincey Jones and then asked Lionel Ritchie to help write a song who asked Michael Jackson for help and a classic was born! And Asia you talked about ego before everyone came into the studio there was a sign on the door that simply said Check Your Ego At The Door! It worked the Iconic singers that came together in this studio will NEVER be produced again I dont care what famous singers you have today this Group will stand against any artist today!! Thank you for the memories!
I highly recommend a documentary here on youtube called Muscle Shoals. It's about the two studios in northern Alabama where a ton of the best music ever made was recorded with a backup band of local white kids who had the X factor. They recorded hits with Aretha Franklin, Percy Sledge, Wilson Picket, The Staple Singers ("I'll Take You There"), Bob Dylan, the Allman Brothers, Bob Seger, Rolling Stones, etc. This is a tiny sample. The end of "Sweet Home Alabama" mentions "Muscle Shoals has its Swampers." It's about this place and people. Sooo many great artists. It's a great documentary about where your favorite music was made, away from New York or LA, by a river that sang.
I have seen it so many times. Fantastic. Another great documentary is the Wrecking Crew. Hal Blaine. Earl Palmer. Leon Russell ETC.
They all are so good but the real vibe is coming from Cindy looper wow that woman is amazing 😻
Its crazy how everybody...absolutely EVERYBODY killed this...
Amazing song and lots of talents
I remember when this was first aired. I am crying right now cause I see all of the performer who have since passed.
Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie wrote this Song. Check out Michael Jackson ‘88 Grammy awards and his ‘95 mtv music awards performances. As everyone walked in there was a sign that said leave your egos at the door.
Lionel had written moist of the song before Michael was even involved. When Quincy asked Michael to be a part of USA for Africa, Michael demanded he be part of the song writing credits, otherwise he wasn't interested. So they let him write some of the verse lyrics. Quincy had just produced Thriller, and they all knew that having Michael involved would be a huge PR win. Michael was the only one who got to record his vocals separately, and have his solo video bit shot separately, which is why it looks and sounds so different to the rest of the clip (had you not noticed its suddenly dark and that there's nobody else in the room?). Both his blatantly double tracked vocals and soft focus "video bit" where it pans up from his feet, to his weird little glove, up to his face, were all recorded long after everyone else had gone home. So much for "egos left at the door."
Cyndi lauper steals the song. I'm a rock guy.. but actually went to see a lauper concert with a friend in pheonix.. soooooo underated. Her vocal performance was mind blowing. No mix, auto tune, piped in lyrics... she blew the doors off the place.
