You both have taught me to be careful with my expressions. I am a native U.S. English speaker, but from the comments, I have learned much. In the U.S., one can never be 'too appreciative or grateful'...but it can be considered a bit rude in other cultures!
Hello disoriented1. Vicki here and thanks so much for writing. When I moved to the US, one of the things I had to start doing more was saying 'thank you'. Actually it's a bit more complicated than that because we use thank you a lot as a discourse marker in British English to move from one topic to another, but we use it less to signal gratitude. I think it's related to the different styles of politeness in the UK and US and here's a link to a video about that that you might enjoy: ua-cam.com/video/tikE-saHWcI/v-deo.html

I'm a new subscriber from France and I just want to say THANK YOU. I've finally found THE CHANNEL which helps me to improve my English skills. In French we say "merci" for thank you. But we exaggerate only when we know well our interlocutor, for example "merci tu es le meilleur" (thanks you're the best). I wish you an happy New Year! Luana 🇫🇷
Hi Maximus. As it turns out, you're not alone. There are many native English speakers who have subscribed to our channel. We are very grateful to them, and we thank you for watching.
@@SimpleEnglishVideos thank you and I have since shown my sister your channel and she is a new subscriber. Keep on helping people, you're doing great x
Hi and thanks a lot for your wonderful work! The two most common words we use when we thank people in Russian are "Spasibo", which is a contraction of "God save you", and "Blagodaryu", literally "I bless you". Of course, no one is any longer aware of the ethimology of these words. We use exaggerations, too.
Hi Marina. This is Jay writing back to you. I knew about "Spasibo" but was unware of "Blagodaryu" Thanks for sharing that and thank you so much for watching our videos.
I just stumbled across your videos and, despite being a native Briton, am absolutely loving them! I'm even learning so new things. I've spent a fair bit of time in the US, mostly in Atlanta, GA and found a curious difference to the way I thank someone and how the locals did so. Firstly, that Americans tend emphasise their thanks more the the British e.g. "Thank you so much, I really appreciate it!" where I would have found myself simply saying, "Thank you" at something fairly trivial. Also, that many times rather than saying, "You're welcome" the folk in Georgia would simply say "Mmmhmm" in what felt like a a somewhat aloof manner. In time I realised that this was the typical (and meaningful) response having thought I was doing something to offend these guys! I wonder if you've encountered similar and whether this might be a more localised thing?
Great to meet you noodle. :-) Vicki here. I too was struck by differences in how thank you was used when I first came here. Sometimes the sincerity of the tone made it sound almost false to my British ear. Folks weren't being sarcastic, but that's how it might have come across in the UK where a more simple 'thanks' would have sufficed. I think that Mmmhmm acknowledgment might be more of a southern thing, but I've certainly come across it here too. I also found myself needing to say thank you more often here, reasoning that my simple 'thanks' wasn't going to cut it. But in fact linguists have found we use 'thanks' more frequently in British English. The difference is we'll use it as discourse marker rather than a token of appreciation. So we'll mark the end of a segment of conversation with a thanks. You might enjoy this TED talk by Lynne Murphy where she goes into it at the end. ua-cam.com/video/Jbu-eMcEF3s/v-deo.html

That's a very helpful video for me, Vicky and Jay. I didn't think that I could say such complicated sentences in place of "Thank you". Thank you very much for such useful information.
Maths Corner To Chinese Corner. we are so pleased that this video has been useful for you. Thank you so much for letting us know and thank you for watching.
And by the way we also exaggerate in Ukraine when we say something like "You're my hero", "You're my life saver". Those are quite common. Other phrases are also common here. However, we don't use phrase "You're a star".
Congratulations on your subscribers! You are so pretty pair! I started to watch your channel only last December, but now I like it! Hello from Russia))
Greetings from Russia, hello Vicky and Jay! I'd like to congratulate you on having more than 100000 subscribers, and I'm one of them. Firstly I want to congratulate Jay and Vicky for 100.000 subscribers, our family is growing up💖and Secondly thank u so much for useful video.Lovee from Azerbaijan💋💋🇦🇿
You’re my heroes! 🖤 I’m from Poland and we also use the phrases like “you’re the best, you’re my lifesaver, I love you” (but in polish of course 😄) to say someone “thank you”. I think it’s normal in most of countries.
Hi Wesley. This is Jay responding to your comment. Yes, superheroes is indeed an exaggeration, but we really do try to do our best. We're glad you liked the video and thank you for watching.
Sorry if I’m getting on your nerves bu now but I just can’t help commenting to say thank you to you for these amazing videos because all of them are so absolutely amazing and I’m well educated on English , what not to say in Britain and America and the correct meanings of words so yous should be proud of yourselves because you’ve come ever so far and I’ve even turned of auto correct and those wordy things at the top of my keyboard to try giving words a bash myself because with most words there’s a silent letter but sometimes they are spelt exactly like you say them! THANK YOU JAY AND VICKY!!!!! 🙏
Sophia, you are certainly not on our nerves :-) We are most appreciative of your comments about the experiences you have on our channel. They are always welcome. We rely on our viewers to let us know how we're doing. So thank you for watching and thank you for continuing to let us know what you think about the videos.
You are my favourite English teachers. I always learn from you many useful words and phrases. But I prefer the British English to US English, I am interested in US English too. Sorry for my weak grammar, I try to improve it. Greatings from Hungary! I lived in Ireland for 13 months, their English is very special... :)
Ferenc Norbert Tóth, don't apologize - you are doing very well. We certainly understand everything you've written. It's great that you enjoy British English and are interested in American English. Thanks for letting us know and thanks for watching our video.
@@SimpleEnglishVideos Many thanks for your encouragement, I always enjoy your videos, my favourite themes are the pronunciation of the tricky words. If we hear and see the words, we will learn, and understand them easier by this way. I like the situational examples, they are very useful for listening comprehension. When I read an English text, I understand most of its parts, but whwn I listening to BBC Radio One.... I think that I don't speak English... The grammar is very important to me, but when I have to speak in English I just look for the words and try to speak and understand. I have a request: Say the next words: just, sample, airport, earth, etc, brewery, genre, ingenious, debris, chaos, cache, debit, difficult. These are really difficult ( like this last word) and tricky. Many thanks once more!
AMAZING! But I wasn't expecting less. You're just incredible. Just one question. When and how do we use "Never mind"? Can we use it to answer "Thank you" or something? Or the usage is completely different and I'm completely confused??? Thanks for your help and support to this community of learners! Hope to see more from you and have a nice day!
Hi A.J.Lopez. So glad you like the video. 'Never mind' means something like 'forget what I just said' or 'don't worry about it'. At about 4.33 you'll see some examples: ua-cam.com/video/6CpSaO0jJJg/v-deo.html

Thank you for those interesting and super positive videos! You're awesome!
And by the way we also exaggerate in Ukraine when we say something like "You're my hero", "You're my life saver". Those are quite common. Other phrases are also common here. However, we don't use phrase "You're a star".
Thanks so much Oleg. It's great to learn about how phrases like these work in translation. Some work, some don't. Thanks for sharing.

You’re my heroes! 🖤
I’m from Poland and we also use the phrases like “you’re the best, you’re my lifesaver, I love you” (but in polish of course 😄) to say someone “thank you”. I think it’s normal in most of countries.
Hello Alex and welcome to our channel! We're so glad you like the videos and thank you for sharing about Polish phrases. :-)
You two are superheroes! And we use to exaggerate, when we say thank you, here in Brazil too!

Thanks Eduardo. So glad you like the channel. :-)
