Hi. Before watching this video l thought l've known every thing about some and any. But after that l got really surprised. I mean you're teaching practically. It means it doesn't matter if you know lots of grammar or vocabulary, but you have to imploy them in suitable situations. I'm so glad to be your subscriber. ❤️

    • @SimpleEnglishVideos

Great question Yigit. I asked for one spoon and he said 'There aren't any in the drawer', meaning there are none. If there are none, it also means there isn't one.
In English we have countable and uncountable nouns, so if I'd said I need some rice, he would have said there isn't any. (Rice is uncountable) But with countable nouns 'There aren't any' is a natural response.

    1. Healthy reasons
    2. I want to protect the environment and also animals.

Hi UA-camrPolyglot. This is Jay writing back. I have tried Gazpacho, and I'm pleased to say, I've had it in Spain as well. I love it. We just had a delightful vegan lunch with a young woman (our first full time dog walker) her husband and their young child. They are all vegans. I made "Beyond Beef" burgers which are extraordinarily like real barbecued hamburgers but they are made from beets. She brought macaroni and cheese but the cheese was actually from made vegetables and yeast. It was lovely.

@@SimpleEnglishVideos Many soja products are alternative for vegans.
There is vegan cheese. There is an alternative to meat. I buy soja products: Vegan Yogurts, cheese and meat.
I mean fake meat, not real meat. The product tastes like meat, but it's not real meat.
We can get the B12 vitamin thanks to soja products. I also found that B12 vitamin in some energy drinks.
Some people argued about this topic. Is that B12 vitamin artificial or natural?
Think about for a second. How do herbivores animals get their vitamins and proteins?
They eat grass, plants and fruit and they still survive. We don't need meat, nor fish to survive. We can make it without none of them.

Simple English Videos But there r some different between klein, kein, and nichts... KLein: a little.... but if we wanna use thus adjective, we have to know da article of da pronun what we want to say! But! Warning! If we use der die or das, we dont put r or s as a last letter of the word! But we must 2 take a letter E. I dont know why! For example: Der schwarzE Wagen, die schwarze Katze and das schwarze Auto... Wagen and Auto mean CAR in english. Both words have only 1 meaning... Now let seethese word with INdefinite articles please! Der and Das go to EIN. BUT DIE IS EINE! So: Ein schwarzeR Wagen, einE schwarzE Katze, ein schwarzeS Auto... it is easy.

Kein is nothing in english. But itvis also kein oder keine! Nichts means nothing also, but it is dative case. So: Ich tu nichts. It means I dont do anything.

Yes, that works Szerbak. You could say 'Do we have any eggs in the fridge?' or 'Do we have some eggs in the fridge?' Both work.

But if Some and Any have different meanings, why do we even need those 3 rules? If you understand the meanings of these words, it should be enough to use them correctly. A person, who needs to think about if a sentence is positive, negative or a question to use Some and Any correctly, definitely doesn't actually understand their meanings.

Erm, I'm afraid I'm not sure I understand you, mjn80. Some and any both mean 'a number of' or 'an amount of'. Semantics isn't the driving issue, is it? Isn't it primarily syntax?

    • @rnjnj80
      @rnjnj80 5 років тому

@@SimpleEnglishVideos Why do you think that semantics isn't the driving issue? The difference between Some and Any is all about semantics for me. They mean not just 'a number of' or 'an amount of'. There is a big difference in the meaning.

Hi Anil. Great examples. Here's how I would probably say the second sentence: Would you mind cutting me some pieces?

07:03 "Any" also has a negative meaning?! "Any" can mean none?! Sorry, but what you are saying is plain wrong. Yes, "any" can be used in negative sentences, but that doesn't mean "any" itself has a negative meaning. You should not confuse the meaning of a word and the meaning of a whole sentence.

    • @SimpleEnglishVideos

I'm not sure what you mean. 'Any' doesn't always negative connotations but it's frequently used in negative contexts. Let me give some examples: 'I can't find anyone to help.' 'I can't find any of the things I was looking for.' 'Life's not getting any easier.'
And 'any' is connected to all or nothing, as opposed to 'some' which would mean 'part of' or a limited number.. Compare:
'If you have a question, anyone in the office can help' (all of them can help)
'If you have a question. there isn't anyone who can help' (none of them can help)
'If you have a question, some of them can help. (a limited number of them)

Please don't say that going vegan is good for the environment and animals. You make the impression of being very sensible and educated people and I appreciate your work a lot, but you should be more careful and avoid saying such stupid things. I'm sorry for the adjective "stupid", but it fits in very well here.

Евгений Андреев, this is Jay writing back to you. I can't speak for everyone else, but I can tell you that the vegan diet has significantly lowered my cholesterol and improved my overall health according to my doctors, and that is the primary reason I've chosen that path.

@@SimpleEnglishVideos Hello Jay. I'm glad your doctor's recommendations helped you. But it's your own personal situation. If you feel better and if you’re healthier, that can only mean that you’ll be able to produce more videos, which is awesome. But the issue with nutrition (and cholesterol) is much more complicated than you might imagine. I’d advise you to read this article first: chriskresser.com/does-your-diet-affect-your-cholesterol-level/. Vegan diet can really help in particular circumstances, but those are extremely specific cases, and such diet should be seen as just a very strict remedy for a particular concern (I highlight the word “particular”). There are lots of people who switch to “paleo” diet (which is in direct contradiction to vegan) and lose weight and their health gets significantly improved. Claiming that vegan diet is good for the environment and animals is a serious delusion (and if you're saying that you "can't speak for everyone else", you're contradicting yourself). Such diet can even be extremely dangerous, especially for anybody under the age of 20. Throughout history, there hasn’t been a nation or tribe on Earth that has been following a vegan diet for centuries. All native tribes and peoples that have been enjoying good health and living long lives have always been following a varied diet with a high ratio of animal products. I beg you not to resort to phrases like “vegan diet is good for the environment” because it is simply not true and can mislead other people who trust you. By saying such things you are likely to do more harm than good. I sincerely recommend you read the book “Nutrition and physical degeneration” by W.A.Price, which can give you a lot of food for thought. If you’d like, I can send it to you by email. Kind regards.
