Dude, I’m so sorry that happened! Glad y’all were alright and able to drive out!
Crazy rollover! Glad no one was hurt. New follower, so I see how she has been rebuilt. One of my favorite trails in Moab!
Haven't finished the video, jumped up & yelled when it stalled & you rolled back! Glad no one was hurt, and coz it's a 'Yota I KNEW it'd walk off the field on it's own. Blessed to have your crew there with you.
Bob Gatewood yessir! 🤘🏼
Crazy, glad your safe and 4runner still going strong
holy crap that what scary to watch.. crazy she finished the run and got you guys home! Glad no one got hurt..good stuff man
Dude that looked scary. Glad you're ok and hope you got the runner running again!
Glad your all good! Crazy. Awsome it made it out for you. Wild man
Nice Vid, that roll puckered me right up. Saw the after vid first, subbed seeing this.
Phenomenal video! Very entertaining. Sorry about the roll and tip but glad you're ok and Sandy is up and kicking
JC Rowell thanks! Yeah everyone is ok (including Sandy) and that’s all that matters now 🤙🏼 thx for watching!
This video is amazing god bless you for staying safe and sound guys!!
That's when you have to weigh the pros and cons between a manual and and automatic transmission. Badass though that it finished the trail and brought you all the way back home, very impressive.🤘
Captnhowdy 88 he has a automatic stalled the torque converter
This has nothing to do with the transmission. This is driver error and panic. I’ve been in this exact ledge a few times.
Anis Bekhazi upgrades? Are you kidding me? How about keeping your calm when in a bad situation. That is number one. Throwing money at a vehicle doesn’t make you a better driver. That’s part of the problem with overlanders.
@@Crawlerjamie I'm assuming it stalled because he rolled backwards while still in drive?
@@jshaw6600 Exactly. Did this once on my Z71 pickup on ice. Going about 40 and did a 180. Truck instantly stalled when I caught traction moving backwards. Not much you can do about it.
Dam bro sorry about you're rig 😥 glad you ok, you have some good content and edits definetly worth the subscription 👍
L Ros thanks for subscribing man! Yeah it sucked at the time, but in hindsight I’m kinda glad it happened haha
4runners are quite something! I have one and I love it. Glad she made it out considering there situation
What happened to his E-brakes mechanical pull brakes or mechanical floor brakes?
Yeah! Did he have a stroke or something???
I am happy to see no one hurt and that your vehicle still made it back under it's own power. You however have shown me a way to carry my 14 gallons gas can. I was wondering if I had to tow it with a trailer. Now I see I can stash it on the roof.
Damn, so sorry for the crunch, but sweet Sandy stood by you, took care of you and safely brought you all the way home, bless her heart.
Love your videos!
etienne palos thanks man!
Nice video. Probably my favorite trail to date. Can’t stop watching that thing bouncing backwards. Horrifying
Yeah, def not a fun day after that haha... but old Sandy’s getting a few upgrades as a result. All’s well that ends well 🤘
I give it to ya man....Ya have some straight passion for this thrill
Can never get enough!
Im so sorry man ... im just glad your safe 🤘🏼
That rollover was brutal to watch. You gained so much momentum rolling backwards. Pretty much unavoidable. Luckily there wasn't a huge drop off or anything. Baboons pass in Africa is a super sketchy trail and hard to watch people do. Huge deadly drop offs with inches to spare from a cliff.
Lots of places would have had a less survivable outcome with significant drop-offs. If this had been the 'Lion's Back', which is now closed, the 4Runner and its driver would have been balled up after dropping 150-300 feet.
Could have been avoided by using the mechanical break
Great footage. I'm glad you walked out ok
The rollover scared the crap out of me. Glad everyone was ok
My heart! I gripped my gen 3s steering wheel a little tight when I saw it go south.
WOW..great video btw...sorry for your accident..really liked the editing
deadkemper thanks! She’s all fixed now, came back better than ever 👍
That role makes me cringe everytime I see it.
Trail Ready 4Runner roll
What's the mechanic behind the torque converter? That way we know what to do before that happens to any of us
How do you tweak a rear wheel bearing? And also the brake booster is just to assist with pressure you can push hard enough to stop it
Was this even with yanking the e brake lever?
Sorry that happened man! Glad you weren't hurt!
I've taken 2 different 3rd gen 4runners right up that hill. Both 5 speeds, both open diff. One had stock suspension and the other had a 1in spacer lift. The next time I was there was with a rear locker and a 3in toytec kit. Couldn't make it up. In fact all the 3rd gens that were lifted couldn't get it. It just goes to show what a little anti squat does in the rear suspension
I was climbing a steep dirt hill in my 3rd gen and my truck stalled too...why does it do this? I was in 4 low.
That really sucks man glad you are safe though, what a ride! I wonder if the wheels were kept straight, if it would have not rolled.. just kind of gone down that ditch but it was like a bowl, so just would have rolled up hill afterwards. Hard to do in such split second situation.. but damnnn as soon as the wheel was turned after starting to roll backwards i was scared for you man. Lessons learned, hope you're still doing well. Live long toyotas though haha
I am glade everyone was OK. To prevent this in the future, install an extra vacuum canister for the brake booster.
Looks like an excellent character building experience...
That’s one way to put it haha
Glad your okay 👍
Yikes! This is a super tough learning moment. Glad you are okay and your vehicle ultimately survived. Just out of curiosity, what tire pressure were you running?
Thanks! We were at 10psi probably
I did NOT expect that !! Makes my heart cry lol.....sick runner tho!!
The Gopro Guy thanks man! You seen it since the rebuild??
@@Opt.Offroad yes i have! I'm amazed with the progress! Hopefully my runner will look the same soon! Goals man haha keep it up
I haven’t read through all the comments, so I apologize if you’ve already answered this question, but did you try depressing the emergency brake?
If you’re going to push it, be ready to fix it. Looks like you know how to do the field repairs. Good job. I can fix a flat so I’ll stick to the easy stuff.
That’s what 4Runners are for (sorta) go thru shit and “hell” and still get you where you need to go. I love my 4th gen, upgrading to a 5th gen 4wd soon. Am very excited.
Whenever I drive a rig with an automatic transmission and I think I'm gonna roll back I make absolutely sure I can pop it into neutral as fast as I can, put it reverse before I roll back, or have my wits about me to hit the parking brake in case the motor gets stalled by the torque converter.
I also left foot brake alot so I can keep my right foot on the gas so the whole drive train stays engaged.
thanks for the video and the experience. do you think if you apporached the same obstacle without flooring it, but slow and steady that you would have been able to clear, or at least be in a more controlled state after loosing some traction?
it's possible! spent lots of time armchair quarterbacking that moment
The positive, you walked away healthy!!!stay safe out there!
Iv'e had my 3rd gen for 20 years this very month and I'll have it another 20 if I live that long... which I likely won't. Best darn dependable trail rig there is!
It was for its time, much better stuff out now.
@@SuddenSlip What can I get that doesn't cost 10-20 times as much?
Sic you made home! 🤘
Brakes?
Love seeing the spectators run over to help. Car people = good people
Mickey Roessler that was all my family and friends, hence the screaming and crying. Definitely good to have everyone there!
Scary stuff! Kinda glad I stayed off of any real trails my first time out to Moab, there's always next time
Tell you what, my first time out there I'm rolling passenger with someone experienced....I'm still brand new to wheeling so I've got a ton to learn. Still amazed how capable the 3rd gen I just got is though, haven't done anything close to this hard but still stuff that seemed hard at first but I'm realizing my rig will do a surprising amount even though it's not that upgraded (2" spacer lift and 31.5s that came on it when I bought it and some fairly cheap aftermarket shocks).
Glad you were safe.
Can't stop a 4runner
dang... that was crazy!!
How much did this cost to fix
First off, I’m glad you’re okay, that was a scary situation. My question is how did the stall converter stall the engine? I’ve never heard of that.
When then an Automatic rolls backward with the engine running, it cuts off the engine to prevent damage. The engine in D wants to push the vehicle forward, rolling backward causes binding, and something will break if the engine does shut off.
ive done it to my girl a couple times not on propose of course, for some reason after a drive when the engines warm, it will idle below 400 rpm for some reason I think cause of the heat, only would cut off as I pulled into a parking space idling in, because he had his truck in 4 high, the wheels lost traction, if he ran in 4 Low, the engine can rev higher and wheels wont spin to hard and keep traction
What all have you done to your 4runner? love the rig!
MMayer thanks man! BTF long travel with Kings front and rear, dual locked 5.29s on 35s
E-break?
What size tires on the 3rd gen 4runner and did it have a lift. I want to go to Moab and want to see what works.
Rosco Bosco they’re 315/75/16, or a little smaller than 35s. You could do most everything out there with 33s
What's the name of the song? Sounds good.😃
I like the little dance and the dude screaming at 3:17
I don't understand the mechanics of the loss of control. The engine stalled with the automatic trans in gear and it freewheeled backward with no resistance from the engine? I did not know what was possible.
Yes that pretty much sums it up. Same as when you push in a clutch on a manual transmission, you can roll freely while in gear. When the torque converter is not putting load on the transmission from the engine, there is nothing to prevent you from rolling
The manual says there should be enough reserve pressure for one more assisted braking... it looks to me like they were wrong.
I drove the same 4runner with 360k on it for 10th days in SLC and Moab, this Gen are beast to kill! just some TLC and back on the road (or offroad! ;) )
Yessir! 🤘
Glad you're safe! I would rather stay on payment...
Scary ride. 😬
ouch, sorry brother, thanks for sharing though
Roofrack?
Real life 👍🏼
Damn dude that is scary. Mine has a manual transmission so now I am scared af of stalling. I guess having the clutch out would keep the vehicle from moving especially in 4 low.
What tire carrier is that? I've built a rear bumper and now I'm debating whether or not to fab up a swingout tire carrier. The one you are running seems to provide a good bit of exit angle. Also, how did the KO2s do?
It was a home built one, using a hitch mounted swing (meant for those baskets) and a Walmart hitch mounted tire carrier. To be honest the exit angle was horrible, at least for the stuff I like to do. I sold it last year and am gathering the supplies to modify my bumper with an actual swingout. The KO2s have done great for what they are. Much more grippy than the OGs. I’ll probably go with some mud terrains next time tho 👍🏼
@@Opt.Offroad What type of latch and spindle are you planning on using? Well, if you're thinking MTs you don't mind road noise. I'd suggest looking into Cooper STT Pros. A tad noisy, but more than capable on the trail. A very balanced AT. KO2s are good, just couldn't cut the butter for me, plus, expensive!
Jasonhb07 I got the latch on Amazon, just one of those basic vertical pull style. The hinge is Comp4x4’s dual shear, which I don’t recommend just based on their lack of communication and how long it took me to get my product. Just go with 4xInnovations, that’s what I would do if I was starting over.
STT Pros are on my list of considerations 👍🏼 a few of my wheeling buddies have them and like them a lot
@@Opt.Offroad Be sure to upload a video of your build. Good luck!
That's when u stand on brake with both feet and try to put the steering wheel through the ceiling, did same thing in my jeep, managed to stop
That could have been so much worse, glad everyone is ok. What type of rear bumper is that, I love it!
DoeBoy 407 thanks man! The rear bumper is from Addicted Offroad
Sweet, thanks ima check them out! How’s the runner?
Lmao and kept on chugging along!
Could've been way worse dude , awesome footage though and nice 4 runner , did u ever get it fixed?
lxH8xURxFACE thanks! Yeah watch the “project long travel” series to check it out. Basically a bunch of timelapse videos. I’ve uploaded a handful of trail vids since then too 👍
What brand of roof rack and rear bumper do you have?
Roof rack is just a local group buy we did with a guy in Tijuana. We call them TJ Racks. The rear bumper is from Addicted Offroad
Opt Offroad Love the rack, seen a few others on UA-cam. Wish I could get one.
MAAAAaaasteeeer 😁😁😁 ✌✌👍👍👍👍
Honestly , do you find your self snapping front CV axles alot?
XxSocalzFinestxX not often at all. Having the front diff locked helps save a lot of wear on the front end, CVs included. The only reason I ever broke them was when I was at full droop and steering lock. Too much angle for the outer joints. I’m hoping with my new LT setup, I can avoid all binding and (knock on wood) not break another CV for a long time
Sorry bro 🇺🇸 love the finish tho trail done and home safe! I am a firm believer in too many things mechanical can go wrong will go wrong! It would just be nice if manufacturers could keep things simple instead of expensive...glad you didn’t get hurt! 4 runners usually are a family rig so I flipped out for a sec
Siiii
Y llegó a casa por sus pies Bravo TOYOTA 👍
Fuuccckk makes me not even want to do anything with mine now id he so hurt 😭 glad y’all walked away! I bet that was scary asf
what roof rack do you have on it?
Dane Blackburn it was a local group buy, one-off type deal. If you’re interested I can sell you a better version of the same rack though, about half the price of a Gobi. No shipping though so you gotta pick up here in Riverside County CA
Only a Toyota can drive away from a wreck where someone seems to have forgotten about the break pedal and rolls his rif lol :)
had my brake pedal to the floor the whole time. that was the worst part, i was helpless once the motor stalled
Subbed
No brakes at all? Looks like you pushed the clutch not the brakes or maybe the Toyota floor mat got stuck.
This. Even with no booster you have brakes. Just no assist. I don't run a booster in my crawler. Just takes a little more leg effort.
Don’t have a clutch pedal, and if you look closely you can see the brake lights turn on right after I cut throttle. Brake pedal was to the floor as soon as I realized what was happening. Didn’t matter by that point
4runners AND drones! Sign me up
Amazin253 haha yeah we were overlanding pretty hard that day 😂
Glad your all right bud
Black Lavender thanks man 🍻
Aww man just bought a 03 4runner last week, sucks to see the damage but damn... toyota is tough af
3:56
guy has a death wish, standing that close to cables with that much tension.
Respek!
I have a beige 3rd gen named Sandy too.
He gave it hell
Are you using OEM brakes on that rig?
Paul Bertuleit yessir
1sr gen tundra brakes are compatible and you don’t need to change the master cylinder. Have them in mine and they make a big difference. Cheers
Daam 💔
No brakes applied at 3:15. Even with the engine off, you can still have 2-3 chances to apply brakes. Wonder how ABS works when travelling backwards?
Jan pur watch it again, this time look at the smaller frame and make sure you’ve got HD on. You can clearly see my brake lights. By the time I realized I had stalled and pushed my brakes to the floor, there was no booster left to use
What do you mean "no booster left to use" ... you still had fluid in the lines, and a pedal connected to the MC piston. Have you never used breaks without the engine on? Stand on that bitch, it will stop
@@nosebergs-are-at-it-again For sure. Brakes are made to work without the engine running. It's twice as hard to push but they work. Hit the emergency brake too although shit happens quick !!
Good thing there wasn't a giant cliff at the end of that.
for some reason my girl does this sometimes, after a drive when the engines warm, it will idle below 400 rpm for some reason I think cause of the heat, only would cut off as I pulled into a parking space idling in, because you had his truck in 4 high, the wheels lost traction, if you ran in 4 Low, the engine can rev higher and wheels wont spin to hard and keep traction, its nice to know my 4runner will survive a hit like yours did, Toyotas are unkillable
I was in 4lo
@@Opt.Offroad oh ok
4.0 ?
øks those came in the 4th gens. Mine has a 3.4
Ок💪
I'm guessing no rear locker?
dual locked 5.29s. It's the camera perspective, much steeper IRL
Dual locked on 5.29's and it still didn't have enough torque to push you over? Were you on 4Lo?
@@Opt.Offroad
@@tomx7889 Yeah it was much steeper than the camera angle lets on. Steep enough to allow my front end to lift pretty easily. I was in 4Lo, it was less about torque and more a matter of traction
damnnnn.
That was quite a (unwanted)ride...
