Had to come back to see the origin story for the Honda. I was surprised to hear you didn't have a dirt background! Looking at your recent stuff you seem like you have done it all your life. There's hopes for this old dog to still get better at dirt riding too!
LOL. There's always hope. But, nope, street all my life.
Craig, I did a ride a few years back up at Taylor Park Co, the oldest guy in our group was 74. I will attest that we didn’t have to wait on him, I’m now 63 and it’s my mission to ride as long as I’m able. I’m just short of the 50 years of riding mark. There is hope.
I also had to see the origin albeit late (cold February day 2023). Love the Honda looneyman frame, reminiscent of CR250s. You just can’t miss, with the Honda reliability and solid engineering. I know you now have in excess of 16k, will you forge on or move up to newer iron? I sold my 20 year old Suzuki DRZ 400 ? miles, tripometer only. It was hard to let it go, that was 20 yrs of trouble free usage. As U know Co requires plated equipment to ride so many trails now. It was time to play legal to stay out of trouble. Indeed the park and forest rangers are checking for plates. THX for the great videos, and keep exploring!
22,000 miles later and still forging ahead. Ride Red. :)
Love your vids Sir, thanks for taking the time to share with us.
You’re welcome. Thanks for watching them.
Hey Welcome to dual sport riding. So much fun. May all your offs be as gentle as that little tilt. To make the tires work better, lower the pressures to 18 rear and 16 front. bigger contact area that way.
Thanks for the advice and the good vibes! Headed to Rabbit Valley to tomorrow to scare myself silly.
Always good to go back to the beginning of your adventures on the 450L :-) You've come a long way to what you've changed on the bike to what you have today mate :-) Iam still thinking about what Honda iam going to buy, either the CRF 300 Rally or the 450L :-)
Two good choices, though kind of a Granny Smith to Honey Crisp comparison.
@@JohnTYoung All can afford, lol...Really want the AJP PR7, :-)
@@JohnTYoung Honda only do the 300L or Rally and the 450L in UK , So not alot of choices :-(
nice vids. my dream bike. i have the 250l spend most my time considering upgrading to the 450l
I've never ridden the 250L, the closest I've come was my 250X. The 450L has so much more power and torque that I couldn't imagine doing the trips I'm doing, hauling the camoing gear I'm hauling, on a smaller bike. Thanks for watching!
@@JohnTYoung yeah. with luggage and fully loaded up, its very limiting. the one thing that holds me back is the reliability of the 450l. oil changes every 1,000klms. but what about valve clearances, valve shimming etc. how often do u change the piston rings, or need to rebuild the top end. time test. its like a catch 22. cant have best of both worlds each has a sacrifice.
@@Zen-525 Very true. 6000 miles and only changing the oil. No valve shims or rebuilds on the horizon yet.
@@JohnTYoung nice!. thats sobering
Thanks for great videos; subscribed. Just got my 2019 CRF450L this week and also building it similar to yours. Have you done a video on license plate relocating kit? Also don’t know if by design or a glitch; but can’t access motorcycle list videos no. 1, 2, 4, 30, and 40.
Thank you! I did not do a video on the relocation. Or rather, the videos got lost or deleted by mistake. But the Flatlands Racing kit is super easy to install, solid, and CHEAP. As for the other videos, those are in the pipeline right now. I goofed and made them "private" instead of "unlisted" by mistake. I try to release a video every week or two, (so You Tube won't yell at me) but sometimes I make them 2 or 3 at a time and upload them. Thanks so much for subscribing!
look forward to the playlist. subbed
Did you have a dual sport bike before the crf450l and if so what bike? I currently have a 2015 yamaha wr250r and love it but i'm sure i would like more power at some point. Only thing i don't like about the honda are the maintenance intervals. I guess that comes with the territory when it's based off their motorcross bike. Curious to see how it lasts long term.
I have a CRF250X as well, but I've only had it a few weeks. As for maintenance, the 450L calls for valve checks every 600 or so miles. It's been defanged a little from the R model. So far I love the 450s power. More than enough for me in the dirt even with all the EPA gear. On the street it does fine, as long as you're not expecting a Super Sport.
@@JohnTYoung Ah I gotcha, yeah i think it called for oil changes every 600 miles, and valve checks every 1800 or so i believe. Good luck with the bike!
John M I currently have an 08 wr250x and I’m also looking to get the CRF450L. Unfortunately, I’m not expecting Yamaha to bring out a 450r anytime soon. I’m not looking to get rid of the WR, just adding the 450l to the mix. I’m craving the extra power. Initially, I was interested in getting an off road bike like a yz450fx but I’d much rather something that I can plate. The 450l also has a longer maintenance schedule then the ktm/husky along with a longer warranty and option for extending the warranty.
@@MRUNDISPUTEDCHAMPION Plus it's a Honda. I've always had great "luck" with my Honda's.
John T. Young Exactly, it shouldn’t have any issues as far as long term reliability is concerned.
I've been watching your vids and subscribed. Good stuff. Interested in selling your street legal 250x?
Thank you! I really appreciate that. The 250X has already been sold.
I have 450L for me the throttle is just to snappy, I know the struggle riding in slick areas
Between the G2 Ergonimics Throttle Tamer, 5000 miles on the bike, and now the Vortex ECU the throttle is as smooth as butter. The throttle tamer is worth the money.
John T. Young sounds good, looked at getting the throttle tamer but wasn’t sure if it’s worth It, I will order it and see if it helps
So... CRF450L or XR650R ? Will the rally stuff fit on the XR ? I'm 6'1". I ride the hell out of a YZ450FX.
I like the 650R.... but I love fuel injection. I don't believe any parts will switch over from the L.
Lesson #1: Strap that helmet on!
😂🤣
If I had a nickel....
@@JohnTYoung hahaha
Do you still work for the Fire Department?
I do not. Sheriffs Office now.
@@JohnTYoung very nice, still in the public safety family, Stay safe Sir!
Can I firstly say great video and a fantastic series of vids with the CRF450L. You are in a great situation there in Colorado. beautiful scenery. It's an absolutely perfect bike. Only one thing, the oil changes needed. I'd like a dual sport like this to do longer overland adventures. Like from here in the UK to Morocco or to central Asia - Kyrgyzstan/Tajikistan. Mind you, in your other video, you say you stretched out the change intervals with Motul Oil to 1100 miles. Plus the bike only takes a litre of oil, so maybe one could take a couple of litres of quality engine oil- especially with the pannier set up you have for a longer overland trip. I have done overland trips in China, Check out my youtube channel for videos of this.
Thank you so much. You are right on all accounts. I'll keep changing the oil at 1000 or 1200 miles and keep getting the oil analyzed and checking the valves for wear to see how far it can be pushed, but ultimately it's a dirt bike, with dirt bike maintenance. It's never going to go 3000 or 6000 miles without need of some TLC. If you enjoy pulling the gas tank off and getting greasy hands, then maybe this is the perfect bike! I've subed your channel and I'll head over there shortly to see all the cool trips you've done. I may have all of Colorado and Utah to play in but you have two entire continents!
