Norm, have you ever thought of doing an amazon wishlist so supporters can gift you things you'd like to do for an upcoming video? Camping gear or specific things for your apartment or for video content? I would totally be up for pitching in for something like that? (I know you're really humble so it'd probably sounds like to you "hey...buy me stuff if you want" and you're definitely not like that...but I thought it'd be an option! ;-) )
Oh my goodness Norm, my auntie had that carved table! She spent many years living in Asia and that table was one of the items she brought home to Scotland with her in the 70's! Hers had a glass top and also little shaped tables / stools that slotted in between the table legs for storage. They had the same carvings on the legs as the big table. Aww, that's brought back so many memories Norm, thank you so much! I've not seen the table in over 30 years so I may have shed a wee tear when I saw it in the video. Happy, happy memories :)
My grandfather had a table like that as well, it was much darker wood. and had chairs that matched it and would sit under it when not in use. also had glass on the top over the carving.
That table didn't seem especially usable as-is, and now it makes sense... it's missing the glass top. Wonder how hard it would be to find a replacement or get somebody to make one...
As a manager of a thrift store, I can appreciate why some of the cooler items would be priced in the lower range (this is the short answer). When you have an item that will be handled more than some others, it's best to price it to sell rather than risk it being damaged if it stays too long.
I love thrift stores! It’s a constant chorus of “what’s this? I need it!” Just last week I had to talk myself out of buying a lamp made from an old prosthetic leg. The prices in that first shop are awesome too!
Had to look up this Casio FD-10. Turns out it is an attachment for a camera called the Casio QV-10, which is actual the first ever digital camera with an LCD screen. This FD-10 allowed you to directly copy the pictures onto a 3.5" floppy disk.
Wow, imagine the compression rate of these videos, or maybe a video with a small resolution and no longer than a Vine clip, to fit into that floppy drive. Such bizarre but so cool oddware stuff :).
At 0:28 is a zen garden used indoors by people who don’t have the yard space to set one up outside. It is also used by older people who find it harder and harder to perform the necessary upkeep that goes along with an outside zen garde. It helps with meditation, to release anxiety, and promote a sense of calm and focus, especially if you have a stress filled life. One of my mother’s “friends” had one at his parents house that I would play with when I was younger. Haven’t seen one in over 30 years, awesome find!
When I saw it, the first thing it reminded me of was a tabletop zen garden. Like business men buy for their desk but never use. So I was on the right track, it’s just a bigger version.
21:34 This is where my interest starts to pique..as a robot collector, Japan really is my heaven on earth..that's also the reason why I go to Japanese surplus/thrift shops here in my country..I do hope I can go to Japan one day..thanks for this! Always enjoying your videos! 😄
Oooo thrifting and looking around for random cool things is so much fun and seeing as Im hoping to travel to japan later this year, this video couldn’t have come at a better time. Thank you Norm!!
Whenever I'm in Japan, I always visit thrift stores for CDs, Books and Toys. Most of my current collection come from those shops, and I love it so much! Plus they're so informative about the state of the thrift items.
@@frankfrankie888 I usually just look for Book Off/Hobby Off in the well known areas. Because I also look for Sentai Robots, I used to visit a shop called Jungle
I absolutely ADORE thrift stores! I find that whenever i want something niche and antique, searching online for said item is always way more expensive than going to a thrift store and hoping they have something similar
Seeing all the collectable stuff like Power Rangers (or "Super Sentai", if most Japanese people likely prefer), Dragon Ball, Pokemon, etc., made me wanted to go to Japan and see some amazing things in these nice-and-clean thrift shops.
Seeing all the Toku stuff reignited the urge to fly out there on a whim, and spend a massive amount of time just sitting there browsing. I mean just look at Engine-Oh that Norm picked up!
Norm, you always know the way to my heart with these thrifting videos. The mom and pop store probably has SO many unique things in it if you have the time to sift through. But, as always, my love for Book Off shines through and that Super Bazaar is truly massive like you said. I’d lose an entire afternoon in there 😍
My god, this is the thing about Japan, they have a ton of bustling malls and big stores but inevitably a dozen different smaller local stores that hide all kinds of gems. Definitely makes you feel like you're hunting for treasure!
The great thing about second-hand stores is you learn so very much about the people who live, and have previously lived, in area by walking through one. Not only by the content, but by how they price things too tells a tale of what the store thinks people will want most. You can also see what was a huge trend at some point if there's a lot of something odd, like the ice-cream makers or the polaroid cameras.
The Casio FD-10 you found is an awsome piece of tech history: Casio released the QV-10, the first digital camera with an LCD screen, in early 1995. The FD-10 could be attached to the camera directly to copy the photos to a floppy so you could take more than the ~90 (incredibly low resolution) pictures that fit the camera storage without needing to copy them to a computer first. I never had one, I was just two months old when it was released, but I stumbled upon it when digging through the modern day history of photography.
This was fun to do "together"! I am just in awe at how well organized the second shop is. I think I would need to camp out inside the store for a few days just to take it all in. Thanks for sharing!! Xx
I love these thrift store videos and it seems Japan has some amazing ones. If I ever go back to Japan I think I will visit the thrift stores for gifts to take home as they will be far nicer presents than the usual tourist stuff.
Appreciation for all your Japanese content. They inspire a life long fascination with all things Japanese, past present and future. I was on the edge of my seat trying to see the electronic music equipment, synthesizers, drum machines, effects etc, but you dashed by them too quickly, lol. I’ll have to go see for myself one day. Thanks again.
This is so cool to watch. While growing up, my mom used to frequent thrift stores all across the US and even overseas in Germany (and Europe) so it's fun to see what different countries have in their thrift stores :)
I love book off and Wattmans for thrifting. I just moved back to the states last year after living in japan for 4 years. I got all of my video games from the thrift and recycle shops. I was a big PS Vita collector for games. Watching your videos makes me miss those thrift store hunts.
I love thrift shopping and repurposing all kinds of vintage/retro stuff I find. Would absolutely be amazing to go through thrift shops in Japan, dream come true. Having an original minidisc player with a collection of mini CD's would be so cool!
Thrift stores in japan are my favourite! They're extremely interesting and fun to visit whenever I feel bored. Sometimes you find crazy deals for items that should've been more expensive such as electronics, gadgets or home stuff. I copped an excellent condition dyson vacuum cleaner w/charger for 8000 yen about a week ago!
Dude, that table. I normally could never share your honest excitement you bring to most videos, but I'd be a kid in a toy store in that first store. Can't believe you left it there. I would have stuffed that in the k-car anyways-
Your other thrift store video is how I found your channel, so seeing you do it again was a lot of fun! Japan has insane thrift stores, would love to visit them someday! (And hopefully soon with the borders finally opening back up!)
OMG! Look how organized and neatly and logically placed in the Super store! 🤤🤯. How I wish the thrift stores in the USA were so well organized and well stocked.
second hand shops at times can really be like japan's hidden treasure troves, no matter what you're looking for, be it books, retrogaming, photography gear, music, etc. you find some really great bargains there, and more often than not, in usually great condition too.
I like the quaintness of the first place but for more “mainstream” stuff the second shop is better. How did you NOT buy anything? I saw SO many things I want.
I LOVE your thrift store videos!! My wife and I are sitting here watching this video and discussing that we need to figure out how to ship things home 🤣
I love these! It's always been a dream of mine to visit Thrifts in Japan, since I already love doing so where i live and everywhere ! visit, thank you for this! I've been going through all your list of thrift endeavors, again, thanks!
Working for a camera shop in a fairly large city in the Midwest, I can confirm the Polaroid craze is real!! We can hardly keep the film in stock, we have so many people looking for it. Also, 35mm photography film and disposable cameras fly off the shelf so fast, we’re lucky if we have it for a full day sometimes. And oh boy, we do a lot of film development too! 😂 It’s so cool seeing how excited people are for photography, looks like film is here to stay for awhile yet!! Thanks for the great video Norm, can’t wait to check out those thrift shops myself someday!! 😃
Thank you so much for making such amazing videos. I've been learning Japanese and love learning about the culture too. Your videos show so many things I would never have thought about like these Japanese thrift stores. Super cool!
I love thrift stores, it’s so much fun to find unique furniture and stuff, even if I can’t afford to buy it. The hunt is part of the fun. If I ever make it to Japan I’m afraid of how much I will want to buy and bring back home!
My partner and I loved this video we love thrift stores he went crazy when he saw the goku stuffy lol hope you get to do more thrift store walk through we watch your videos all the time from Georgia 😁
You have me convinced to just go to thrift shops for anime figures when I go to Japan. The variety is insane! And no, never stop nerding out about toys! I rarely see anyone do it and toys can be awesome.
I liked both stores. The first because I love the amazing interesting furniture. The second one because I am a big anime figure collector. While the exchange rate makes it a good time to buy figures(got a small refund of money from a figure site a few weeks ago because of the drastic exchange rate change), the problem is those deals online that one might find, are ate up in shipping costs. Shipping rates to me have become downright criminal in amount. If I buy anything from Japan, I have find a large haul to buy all at once, because while the shipping prices are insane, they don't go up a whole lot with the more you order.
Thank you for this video, our family loves thrifting and someday we d love to visit Japan! My husband’s a huge DBZ fan and other anime figurines so he would love the toy aisle. Thanks for sharing! This will be on our bucket list to see and do.
When I eventually go to Japan (when they fully open up and all that) I definitely want to spend a good chunk of time browsing thrift stores! I'm really into retro gadgets & old video game consoles. But in general there always seems to be random cool stuff everywhere. Thanks for sharing :)
I visit my local thrift shops probably once a week and you can find real treasures in them. Japanese thrift shops are a whole other beast though! I spent some time in Higashi Kurume in Tokyo when my sister lived there, and there was a spot called 'treasure factory' which was awesome, but also small in comparison to that 2nd shop. Thanks for the adventure! Next time I go to Japan I feel like I'm gonna spend most of my money thrifting 😂 Also I remember some Korean students moving to my school around 2005-2007 and they all had those electric dictionaries
Seven minutes in, and I am incredibly impressed by this store. There is no way I would have been able to leave without that tool chest. Too much stuff I'd love to have.
These might be one of the thrift stores that accumlates the remnants of the deceased that were not collected by relatives; which sadly is the case for a rather large proportion of Japanese seniors. So much appreciation for the care our earlier generations had for their possessions with the quality of the stuff seen in this video!
Awesome video, I love thrift stores in general. During the 3 times I've been to Japan, have I visited loads of those stores to hunt for some figurines (obviously) and some diecast car models for cheap prices. (like older Yonezawa/Diapet models, Tomica's and scale model kits) Even though, those stores over here in The Netherlands are no way close to what the ones in Japan that have to order. Really want to roam those stores again, when me and a few friends are coming to Japan next year!
Good morning, Norm! I've watched the thrift shop tours before you've done, but that first one was wild in comparison, between the layout and pricing. Reminds me of the local church thrift shops here. Love the work you do and hope the broken finger won't hold you back!
I'm from the states and from what I've seen, yes polaroids are coming back in trend. Not as big as it was a couple of years ago, but they're making modern polaroid cameras. Not so much as reintroducing older products but more like reinventing polaroids. The older/more vintage looking cameras are definitely more expensive going from 100~300 maybe more. There's also a bluetooth polaroid printer that can turn your digital pictures into polaroids. The wave/phase has definitely passed but film and such is still accessible
When I was holidaying in Japan I needed a spare suitcase just for extra stuff I bought & I found a thrift store nearby where I got an old suitcase for 300 yen (about US$3). Came in very handy and was almost going to buy a new suitcase for ~$100
The small one and the big one both had so much interesting stuff... Thrift shops are surely on my list for the next time I can go to Japan. By the way, I loved the joy you had in the toy aisles especially. I'd probably react the same way :)
That table is super gorgeous. Reminds me of and would work well with the ranma in the houses there. I'm guessing the amp would be 2000-3000¥. Quite the racket 😆 The uniqueness of items from the smaller thrifts are a treasure. So hard to resist purchasing things you don't need. I haven't really ever popped into them, but this is illustrating that I should, especially in Kyoto...all that history/those antiques. 💜✌🐦
Norm , fellow Canadian that just moved to gunma prefecture, I love thrifting here and I actually just bought my iPhone X at Book Off for cheap, I spend a lot of free time treasure hunting because it’s endless And don’t ever stop nerding out over toys , lol
Notification squad here😂 Will be adding to my comment after finishing haha great to see more thrift store videos again! Always the most interesting things to find!
Amazing places, first one is probably my favourite store so far out of all that you've visited. I can already imagine how I would decorate my house with half of the stuff from there but those toys in another store... 🤩
hi Norm, love your channel and videos. Its my first time watching your videos and instantly watched 3 more after the first one. Love your content. Btw, I haven’t checked out all your videos but have you ever done japanese thrift shops featuring sneakers and apparels? Just curious. Thanks and more blessings to you! 🇨🇦

So much appreciation for the care our earlier generations had for their possessions with the quality of the stuff seen in this video!
Dream place to visit....spend days exploring the place....dope vid
Your videos are so good, please show off more of your Japanese, love hearing it
Awesome video, I love thrift stores in general.
Really want to roam those stores again, when me and a few friends are coming to Japan next year!
id cry tears of joy if I found a minidisc in a electronics junk bin. hard-off is truly amazing.
The van you drive is adorkable!
Just finished my workout, going to love watching this while I relax!! :D
Otsukaresama!!
Ah... The nostalgia of having those VHS, floppy disk, Polaroids are coming back 😌 thank you for showing us these kind of contents 😁.
Good morning, Norm! I've watched the thrift shop tours before you've done, but that first one was wild in comparison, between the layout and pricing. Reminds me of the local church thrift shops here. Love the work you do and hope the broken finger won't hold you back!
Thanks so much eh!!
Came in very handy and was almost going to buy a new suitcase for ~$100
I love thrift stores in general. Of the video, the most interesting one was the small traditional one for me, personally.
That table is stunning. I kinda love it.
I love how unique Japan is and the stuff you can you can find. I would love to try to buy things from the vending machines.
23:10 Ahhhh we have the same goku!!! thanks for uploading such awesome video🤩
The small one and the big one both had so much interesting stuff...
Thrift shops are surely on my list for the next time I can go to Japan.
By the way, I loved the joy you had in the toy aisles especially. I'd probably react the same way :)
love aaaall the retro furniture stuff!!
Wow that table is so beautiful!
Loved these thrift shops, especially TOYS! I get a particular kick out of watching for Anpanman in the background because he is always everywhere.
Norm , fellow Canadian that just moved to gunma prefecture, I love thrifting here and I actually just bought my iPhone X at Book Off for cheap, I spend a lot of free time treasure hunting because it’s endless
And don’t ever stop nerding out over toys , lol
Notification squad here😂
Will be adding to my comment after finishing haha great to see more thrift store videos again! Always the most interesting things to find!
Looking forward to it! 😊
@@TokyoLens seeing that amp and guitar makes me question the price I paid to get my set not so long ago😅
Amazing places, first one is probably my favourite store so far out of all that you've visited. I can already imagine how I would decorate my house with half of the stuff from there but those toys in another store... 🤩
Catching up... Loved the smaller thrift shop, so many more unusual items.
hi Norm, love your channel and videos. Its my first time watching your videos and instantly watched 3 more after the first one. Love your content. Btw, I haven’t checked out all your videos but have you ever done japanese thrift shops featuring sneakers and apparels? Just curious. Thanks and more blessings to you! 🇨🇦
drooling over the stuff in the video rn
I love the model train stuff in second hand stores will be worth the trip alone!
