    The thread I use so often in my videos is called "DMC Baroque Crochet Cotton" it is size 10, and it can be found at most Michael's crafts stores, as well as online at Amazon and Create for Less. Hope that helps!!! :)

    I do this with yarn and crochet all the time and I don't know why it didn't occur to me in tatting to use this technique. Thank you so much for sharing this video!

    It's been over a year since I picked up a tatting needle. Most of it came back but I had to go back and watch this video to remember how to add thread. So glad you made these!

    I've just begun to learn tatting and find your videos quite helpful. Thank you. I would love to see something on chain rings/edging and Victorian sets. While I have read online how to do those, I find seeing it demonstrated just makes all the difference.

    To finish and hide loose ends whenever I need to, I use a small tapestry or sewing needle that is slightly smaller than the tatting needle I am using and yet has a large enough eye for the thread being used. This smaller needle sizing makes it easier for me to pass the needle and thread through the double stitches and I find the smaller size does not pull my double stitches out of shape as can happen with the tatting needle. For any needles which had a sharp end on them, I rubbed the pointy end over fine grit sanding paper or emery cloth to blunt them. I also like to thread my ends in on the 'wrong' or 'back' side of my work. This is particularily helpful to me if I am using the double ball or double needle methods with two different colours.

    Thankyou!! I am making bookmarks and its just silly working with such a long length of tail .. So I figure ill do one side and then join in this fashion to go up the other side etc. I thought I could figure it out myself .. And I was basically correct. But knowing is SO much better than umming & ahhi-ing ;) Thanks once again Katy!! :)

    Brilliant! I was hoping to be able to save my tat that I didn't make a long enough tail for. My only issue now is being able to see the stitches to push my needle through before cutting, as I used size 16 thread and a #8 needle! I need a magnifying glass monocle! LOL!

    Got another question for you. Where do you buy your thread? It looks like its in a skein like I buy my yarn. I can only find balls of thread.

  • @sarabethvilla8844
    @sarabethvilla8844 7 років тому +1

    Thank you for your excellent tutorials. I have a general question that I have not seen addressed anywhere. How do you estimate the length of your tail when starting a project? Do you prefer smaller more manageable lengths and keep adding thread or do you rely on over-kill using an extra long tail? What is your rule of thumb?

    • @RustiKate
      @RustiKate  6 років тому +2

      Tail should be on average, 12" and the loop between the needle and the thread ball should be roughly 2 feet. This works best for normal sized projects. The thread will reduce as you tat, but that is a good amount to start with. If you are making a smaller project you can use less. If you are making larger project, it s good to stay with this amount and just add more thread when you run out. Hope that helps! :)

    Caroline, let me look around and I'll see if I can find a good free snowflake pattern for you online. Then I'll see if I can link it to you. :)

    Hi there, love your videos. Think I've poured over every one. Hope you can help me with xomething... Is it possible to add a bead to the inside of a bead in needle tatting? I have found directions for doing it with a shuttle but I much prefer needle tatting.

    I just remembered, as per my last comment, I use the blunted tapestry and sewing needles to make small rings with left over thread 'scraps' for 'flowers' where the regular tatting needles are too long to use.

    A good snowflake to start with can be found by typing "Elmo's Snowflake - Webs" into a google search. I can't attach web addresses in comments on here. Hope this helps?! :)
