Has McDonald's Conquered Asia?
If McDonald's were a country, it's revenue would make it the 105th largest economy in the world, surpassing the GDP of Estonia, Cambodia & Afghanistan. The number of McDonald's employees worldwide would be more than the entire population of Iceland, Barbados and Samoa. It's a big company, but it wasn't always that way.
McDonald's was founded on May 15th, 1940 in San Bernardino, California - that's over 77 years ago - and has since expanded to a 120 countries and territories around the world, serving 68 million customers each day.
It took 27 years for the first McDonald's to appear outside of the US, and 31 years to make it's way to a second continent. THIS continent was Asia, and in this video I'm going to take you through the next 46 years of McDonald's' Asian ascension.
So, which Asian country was the first to open a McDonald's? What did McDonalds have to sacrifice in order compete with local markets? And how much of Asia is there still left to conquer, as of today?
We'll get into all of that, so grab a double cheeseburger (maybe some fries), and we'll explore every Asian country to have ever had a McDonald's.

- McDonald's Georgia for having the chain's most exquisite outlet.

@edzel palcotilo I think no. Other countries (specially western countries, like America) doesn't eat rice a lot. Rice is like a bread or side dish for them. I think it won't be a good idea franchising Mang Inasal in those countries as Mang Inasal tends to focus on "Unli Rice" which makes it a famous restaurant in the Philippines.
May I add that also, I have watched or known some westerners tried Jollibee, it taste odd for them as our spaghetti is different than what they want.

Fun fact : Most of the filipinos only go to Mcdo bc the jollibee resturants in their town are always full of people and there are no seats left.And also if theres a jollibee in an area there has to be a mcdonald near the place and they go there instead.
Happens to me everytime i go to jolllibee the resturant is always full or crowded the only way to get there is to go there early (preferably before 8am) or just order your food and wait for someone to finish eating to get the seat or just take out

my dad used to work in the first mcdonald's store in Israel as a highschooler and was one of it's first employees (got hired before it opened). to this day his mom takes me to that very mcdonalds which is located in Israel's first shopping mall. they even have a playground for kids :)

There's a fast food chain named Samtaeseong in Pyongyang, North Korea, opened by three Singaporean businessmen in recent years and it's been doing quite well. Singapore (strangely) enjoys very good relations with North Korea and it used to be the one of only two countries in the world (the other being Malaysia) whose citizens are allowed to travel to North Korea without a visa, until the assassination of Kim Jong Nam in Malaysia last year when the visa-free regime for Malaysians were revoked, and when Singapore revoked their own visa-free regime for North Korean citizens, North Korea did the same for Singaporean citizens, though there's still a North Korean embassy here and it seems that relationships have not soured.

No I haven't, it is quite expensive to visit North Korea nonetheless, even for Asians like myself who live relatively close to North Korea (we get to save a bit on airfare). There is however a Singaporean traveller (look for his UA-cam Channel "Aram Pan" or DPRK360) who travels to North Korea on a regular basis and it seems that he has a lot of freedom to move within the country alone with his private tour guide, dining at establishments and walking in areas of Pyongyang that are not usually open to the public. It's my guess that the North Korean government is granting him these liberties to promote travel to this secluded country, especially since the United States' travel ban on North Korea this year, much needed tourism revenue in the country is taking a big hit.
You can only travel to North Korea on an organised tour package with tour guides, and these tour packages usually cost upwards of a few thousand euros per pax (yes, euros). While I'm definitely keen on travelling to North Korea to experience what it is like for myself, I don't think I'll be doing it any time soon because I'd rather spend a few thousand euros travelling elsewhere (like Europe or the US first).

Samtaesong is just a staged restaurant showing propaganda that North Korea has a successful economy or people do eat well and enjoy international and western foods. The food there is ridiculously expensive and not much average North Koreans can afford an item there let alone a meal. The restaurant is almost always empty or barely patronised except by the occasional rich tourists or Pyongyang elites. Seriously, opening a kooky fast food outlet like Samtaesong only emboldens the dictatorial regime and benefit only the loyal elites. Ordinary citizens are starving and may even resort to cannibalism. Wake up! The economy there is dead and so called privileged stores, western food outlets, theme parks and ski resorts only benefit the elite, the despotic regime of the Kim dynasty. Singapore and other like minded countries should stop trading or doing business in North Korea. Impose pressure and sanctions. We must not show that we approve of that regime in any way.

Amazing work! This is video is so awesome for so many reasons:
1. Totally did not know about that War + McArches theory - blew my mind
2. The level of research and editing / production you put into this is superb - truly high quality video
3. Very surprising to myself - the sponsorship / ad is actually very interesting! I'm intrigued enough to check it out and share it. On the note of ads, totally should've gotten McD's or The Founder movie to sponsor this if the timing made more sense, haha
One suggestion, what if you engaged more deeply with your audience? I love how informative your videos are, but what if you asked your audience to respond to an opinion question - some sort of conversation starter like, "Are McD's improving lives of countries they expand into, is it bringing unhealthy lifestyle for capitalistic gains, or is it a sign of American imperialism?"
Another thought is, right before revealing information (like 1st Asian country to get McD's) - give your viewers a chance to guess and engage with you - like an annotation to your Twitter where viewer can hashtag a country they think is first - helps build your presence beyond YT

I appreciate your suggestions to have more engagement with the audience. We've actually tried some of that in the past (such as asking questions to the viewers at the end of a video) but there are pros and cons to every decision we realised. For example, looking at our analytics, it's very easy to lose viewer retention especially heading towards the end of the video, which is why we tend to 'go right into' our main points or sponsorship bit without being too wishy-washy in the lead-up. We're still trying to find the right balance though, it's pretty tough.
Jollibee is basically the fast food equivalent of Switzerland. Its in a place that it can easily defend its position from potential invaders that are much stronger than itself. This is also reinforced by a fact that a jollibee and a Mcdonalds are built right next to each other near my house, and whenever I look, I see Mcdonald's customer line failing to the astronomical number of Jollibee customers. I mean, the queues for Jollibee are long enough to reach outside its front door and into the front parking lot, which is very impressive since its literally 5 times larger compared to Mcdonald's queues of 10 to 15 people.
