Has KFC Conquered Asia?
We’ve already covered McDonald’s on this channel, and, well, now it’s time for some KFC! Kentucky Fried Chicken is the world’s second largest restaurant chain after McDonald’s, with over 23000 outlets in more than 140 countries and territories around the world. Now recently, the number of KFC outlets has been declining in the US, but the company has actually continued to grow over in Asia. In fact, KFC’s largest market lies on this continent (we’ll get to that soon).
KFC was founded on March 20th, 1930 in Kentucky, with its very first franchise opening in Utah in 1952. Just a year later it made its way to Canada; and in 1965 the first overseas franchise outside of North America opened in the UK. Now it’s from this point where KFC enters the Asian market (well before McDonald’s); and, in this video I’ll take you through the next 54 years of KFC's Asian ascension.
So, which Asian country was the first to open a KFC? What did KFC have to sacrifice in order to compete with local markets? And how much of Asia is there still left to conquer, as of today?
Indeed we’ll get to all of that, so grab a Zinger burger, maybe some drumsticks, and we’ll explore every Asian country to have ever had a KFC...

- While KFC Malaysia was the first to have outlets run by hearing/speech impaired staff, the footage shown at 3:51 was of an outlet in Thailand.
- Karachi is Pakistan's largest city, but not its capital (13:57). That would be Islamabad. Big oops.
- Kazakhstan recently changed the name of their capital from Astana to Nur-Sultan (16:45).
- As of 2017, the largest Asian KFC in Azerbaijan had moved to a new location inside the central station building (17:04).

Lol Jolibee. There was a giant Wells Fargo office building in my town, but now its a Jolibee building. Being one of the largest buildings in the area, imagine a large corporate building with the silly Jolibee mascot and font plastered on it. For some reason it made me think of Jolibee becoming a megacorporation and taking over the globe or something.

Yeah, KFC is very popular in Indonesia (my country). Not because of nothing, but their chicken is just taste very different than the other. Full of spices, consistance in taste and the chicken is well fried. Plus they make new menus every few months, causing the franchise to avoid saturation.

As an Indonesian i'm telling you nowadays not a lot of people would purchase more CDs since technology boom plus the fact that foreign musicians are more popular than local musicians thus no one listens to KFC-labeled music a lot today.
There's still some purchases though, (mainly from the people who was a working CD Player in their houses and pretty much them who hates the outside culture or people who still does not need internet for daily)

As a Pakistani, I can attest to the fact that the Zinger fact about Pakistan is absolutely true. Literally, every local fast food chain in the country does their own version of the Zinger burger, what's even more bizarre about this is that they don't even make an effort to change the name. It's literally just called a Zinger burger everywhere. However with that being said the KFC Zinger is still super popular, there are many different varieties of it.

I lived in Saudi Arabia when I was younger. I remember albaik, but it didn't taste better than KFC to me. The chicken used to feel dry and there would be like a red stain on the chicken after peeling the crispy skin off. Idk if it's normal, but that red stain always made me prefer KFC over albaik.
