    John thanks for doing these videos. I downloaded the trial version of Fusion 360 two weeks ago and have been playing with it and watching yours and Autodesk's videos. I watched your webinar on CAM for the lathe and was able to sketch, model, Cad, post and machine my first part on our Haas TL lathe at work thanks to you, and your inspiration.😀👍🏻

    There is a (very expensive) product called "Working Model" which does a nice job of modelling components so they are constrained not to intersect. It also can attribute "real world" properties like density, gravity, elasticity, etc. It includes "motors" and linear actuators to activate the models and strain measuring connections. A lot of fun to play with. I once made a couple hundred unit bead chain and let it fall under the influence of gravity; now that was computation intensive. It slowed my old 80386 to a crawl.

    Interesting approach - I'm working on a pulley set w/ timing belts, and was considering drawing the profile of the closed belt, then extruding it. While that would produce a static model, it wouldn't have the dynamic side. Great video!

    Try turning off capture history if you don't want things to be captured in the timeline. You might be able to make a external chain component with the capture history off, and still keep it on in your main design.

    You can also download a McMaster part to your desktop and import it to Fusion 360 from there. This comes in handy if you have multiple parts that you will be importing at different times. Having them ready to import on your desktop is a convenient way to save time.

    If you notice the data for separate bodies was there even though Fusion thinks it's only one. For a simple part like this no big deal but you don't want to dissect complex parts. I found that if I strategically split bodies Fusion realizes all the individual part-bodies magically. Then I just combine anything I unintentionally split.

      +NYC CNC Wouldn't work. It would do the same as deleting them one by one from the right in effect bringing back the deleted bodies (because you are deleting the deleting of the bodies - if that makes any sense). On top of that you are trying to delete actions in between two actions and preserve the last one - in this case the push/pull you used to cut the pin out. I think you did it the only way possible.

    • @bobthecannibal1
      @bobthecannibal1 8 років тому +2

      +NYC CNC Ugh, I tried it and rapidly realized that Fusion 360 needs better kinematic solving. They have Reactor (with Havok plugins) for 3ds Max, and *really* need to bring it over to Fusion. A chain drive limited to 8 links and two sprockets isn't very useful: Contact sets of just the two sprockets and 20 chain rollers still causes 360 to choke and freak out. Meanwhile, games using Havok can have a tank drive through a brick wall and have it look realistic.

    • @MrGerdbrecht

    Not sure if this would work, and it's another cheat for sure. Make a plate with a slot for the chain path, parallel to the chain. Then you could use the pin and slot joint for the chain pins. Last hide the plate or maybe make it construction geometry.

    This is how SW does it: ua-cam.com/video/orqr5ZhObsU/v-deo.html
    Chain and belt mate is different (the chain / belt doesn't appear to move but the sprockets and gears are synchronised) but it's rather like cosmetic threads - why use all that computing power just for visuals?
    Fusion 360 and Onshape haven't implemented chain and belt mates yet AFAIK but they are very powerful if you want to "fit" a std belt length and then set the shaft and tensioner positions. I've done this with toothed belts on my CNC machine so I can use a tensioner wheel rather than slotting all the holes and sliding the whole stepper motor to adjust the belt.

    If you import the chain first and shut off the timeline do the direct modeling (defeaturing) then turn the timeline back on and import the sprocket you will not have the issue of having to delete the parametric info that you had here. Note: I believe you will lose any parametric info if you don't do it first.

    +NYC CNC Interesting video, John! Most everything I know about Fusion360 I learned in your videos. With that being said I wanted to point out your impossible chain model, in that all of the links are fused together (no outer and inner link combo). So i thought i would try it myself on my fairly decent gaming pc with full contact sets. This is what i came up with if the link will work. a360.co/1XDXtYy I don't really know if i did any better but maybe we can all share what we have learned as a UA-cam CAD community along with perhaps a better implementation of motion transfer by A360 and then be able to get some really cool mechanisms designed. In the mean time keep these videos coming, see you for the Wednesday Widget.

    • @weaves7
      @weaves7 8 років тому

      +NYC CNC It worked at first when I only had a few links around one sprocket but i could not get it to work around both sprockets. I would put the inner link in place on the sprocket with the align command ground it and then put the outer link on with the joint command so the chain was not actually connected to the sprocket. Once i had several in place i would enable all contact and ungroun everything. At first it would work so i continued to the end but then i could never get Fusion to use more than 15% cpu for the calculations and it would lock up.So maybe if you do download it you may be able to get a few links to work if you just delete some. :)
