- Desperate times need desperate measures!
Since there are virtually no stocks around the world, of any kind, I decided to build a bike rather than buy one. I was fortunate to order the Merida Silex gravel bike frame last autumn, so it was delivered “right” in time, in spring. Late but in time for me to build it with parts and have it ready for the new season.
This is not a “dream build”, as artist Gee Milner is doing, but rather a custom build, with new parts I had lying around the garage and other I bought later. It’s definitely not an ideal build, but the parts I really wanted, were not on stock. Still, it’s good I now have a functional bike and that there is plenty of room left for upgrades, when the stocks return. The frameset weighted 2,8 kg: aluminum frame, carbon fork, w/headset, axles, BB, seat post clamp and derailleur hanger.
This is a Silex 200 frame, 200 standing for the color scheme and build, if you were to buy the entire bike. The C stands for “custom” since this is not a bike with stock parts.
Special thanks to:
🤟 Bikefun Romania Merida Importer - for providing the frameset
🤟 KeroBike Shop - for hosting my build
🤟 Bogdan Zaharia - the mechanic who actually made the build

Wow
amazing project. at merida silex, what are your feelings with such a short handlebar stems. the factory is 80mm.
Thanks!
While looking to find my perfect fit, i tried several stems and lengths, longer and shorter than 8 cm. In the end I chose 8 cm. For my height (176) this one was the best.
Did you get the weight for the frameset before you built it?
yes, it's in the video, 2,84 kg
Hello, can I ask where you bought this frame set? I heard can be ordered online from Merida Philippines site but can't find it 😔I would also like to build my next bike on this frameset.
I bought it from our local Romanian distributor. I don't think they have it anymore
Hey! what wheels and tires did you put on?
Shimano GRX wheels with CST B-Fast tires, really good tires, very grippy on gras, gravel, fast on asphalt. But not tubeless. You need some skill to set them on the wheels, but not impossible.
All the silex's frame are threaded compatible?
If you're referring to the BB, I used Shimano SM-BB71-41B 86.5 mm which is press fit.
What bottom bracket did you use?
SHIMANO SM-BB71-41B PRESS FIT 86.5MM
Hallo,könntest du mir eine Liste zukommen lassen der verwendeten Teile zum Aufbau des Merida Silex.Im voraus vielen Dank
Hi,
Full specs are in the video description, but now there are a few upgrades:
Fork: Lauf Grit SL, 30 mm travel
Brakes: Sram Apex 1
Brake rotors: Sram Apex 1
Groupset: Sram Apex 1
Transmission: Shimano XT
Chainwheel: Garbaruk Melon Oval 40T
Seatpost: XLC Comp SP-S08, 30 mm travel
How big can be the tires on that frameset?
With what i have (27.5x1.95), tires are 49 mm wide on 650b rims. With that, i get less than 5 mm of rear frame clearance on either side. So far it has proven to be enough, even on pretty muddy trails.
Is it possibile to put there some backrack?
Yes, you can put a metal one
Also in the front. Check out this pick

what's the soft material on your handlebar? THX
It's some gel pads, for damping vibration even more

@@danmazilu Thanks
what cassette did you use? no. of teeth?
SunRace MX80 11 with 11-50T, but was not completely compatible with the Sram NX deraileur. Now I changed it with Sram 11-42T and 40T chainring
How can you use sram apex shifter with sram nx rear derailleur??? Its have differents spools ratio.
Yes, they didn't work properly but they were the only parts I had at a time when there were no parts in shops. Nevertheless, I had a working bike. Now I've upgraded it with a full Apex 1 grouoset.
@@danmazilu, so, I had the same experience. Thank you!
Salut.

Seriously, did I just see mechanical/cable disc brakes ?
You did. Does that seem strange?
насколько же безвкусно подобраны цвета обвеса, красный, белый, золотой.
Actually the frame colors are blue and orange, which are complementary colors, which means they work well together.
@@danmazilu difficulties of translation. The color of the frame suits me, I'm talking about the color of the transmission and other small parts.
