Yes - Heart of the Sunrise (Live Keyboard Cover)

  • All keyboard parts were performed live. Rick Wakeman's tracks were removed using stems from the original recording, with the exception of the background piano track while I'm playing the Minimoog part towards the end.
    Gear used in this video:
    -Nord Electro 4
    -Behringer Model D
    -Arturia Keystep
    -Yamaha MM8 (as a controller)
    -Kurzweil SP88 (as a controller)
    -RedTron MKV software for Mellotron sounds
    I've been working on this video for several months now, and I'm happy to finally be able to share it with the world. Rick Wakeman and Yes are massive inspirations to me both as a composer and a pianist, and I would like to thank them for bringing such brilliant music to the world. I would also like the thank my dad (who has been a Yes superfan since '71) for helping me perfect the sounds, performance, and mix!
    Hope you enjoy!

    You obviously have Mr. Wakeman's gift for fluidity ... you set your hands so quickly the camera didn't catch it a couple of times, yet it seemed effortless for you ..... every bit as wonderful to watch you as it was to watch those original Yes shows - and I've seen a LOT of them over the years! Fantastic work, very nice. Your transcription of the parts looks dead on, and watching them played like that is such fun. I am curious about how the backing track was presented. I expected to notice any misperceptions I had about the keyboard parts watching such a fine keyboardist, but I am hearing background vocals and guitars with more clarity than the "masters" and I am hearing parts I never heard before, especially hard-panned right. I've easily listened to this song over a hundred times in my life with many a different stereo or headphones, I am surprised to hear these other parts.

    • @BARxMusic
      @BARxMusic  Рік тому +1

      Thank you! This is a good question - I'm unsure of the exact origin of the stems that I used to make the keyboard-less backing track, but I'd bet those clean, unmastered stems likely ended up making traditionally-inaudible parts a bit clearer. That, coupled with the fact that I likely didn't match the exact stereo image/panning of Rick's original keyboard tracks, which may have made the side channels a bit less cluttered.

(Keyboards were all new and crazy in the late 70's & early 80's) Our guitar player was a Steve Howe clone. It's a shame he died in a motor cycle accident, (R.I.P. Lil' John). Our bass player was also a Chris clone! We sounded just like YES, but we couldn't get the vocals down. We were young and had energy.......kinda looked like you do too. I'm 62 years old now and could keep up with the power and energy. IMO, you should go for it. Before you know it, time catches up with you and you just can't do it anymore. Go for it my friend!

    I don’t know a huge amount about modern keyboards, but I have a question: how do get the Leslie speaker effect on your Hammond emulation. Do you have a Leslie or is this an adjustable voicing, perhaps via pedal? Great, great cover. Vids like this inspire me to go back and listen to the originals. Because of watching/listening to your performance, I hear bits that sometimes get buried in the mix. Again, thank you for this vid.

    • @BARxMusic
      @BARxMusic  Рік тому +2

      Thank you! There are a number of options for Leslie emulation these days; pedals, dedicated hardware units, and that sort of thing. In this video I'm using the dedicated Leslie emulation within the Nord Electro 4 itself, which isn't perfect but certainly pairs nicely with their Hammond modelling.

    • @cedarwaxwing3509
      @cedarwaxwing3509 Рік тому +2

      The Leslie emulation actually sounds very authentic. I never noticed it in the original song, but after listening to your cover several times I’ve learned to listen for it in the original. Your covers of “Roundabout” and “Heart of the Sunrise” have really deepened my appreciation for how unique Yes’s compositional skills were when they were at their best. Nothing else sounds remotely like those songs. And being able to watch you play adds an extra dimension. I know you did these covers four or five years ago and you’ve no doubt moved on to other endeavors, but would consider doing any more Yes/Wakeman (or perhaps ELP) covers? Having been a fan of the band (especially Wakeman) for over a half-century, I really appreciate your keeping the music alive and playing it with such respect and accuracy. And thank you for responding and answering my questions!

    • @BARxMusic
      @BARxMusic  Рік тому +1

      I definitely intend to do more Yes and/or Wakeman covers at some point in the future. Its tough deciding how exactly to go about executing them, though. As time goes on, I become increasingly-inclined to want to be as faithful to the originals as possible, which requires a lot of expensive or hard-to-find equipment...it feels like merely just playing the parts doesn't mean much unless the I also can match the original sounds as well. Hope that makes sense!

    • @cedarwaxwing3509
      @cedarwaxwing3509 Рік тому +2

      @@BARxMusic Obviously your ear is better trained than mine or many of your viewers, but your covers sound very close to the originals to me. One could carry original instrumentation to the extremes … finding an original tape-driven mechanical Mellotron for example, but that would -as you note - be quite expensive and probably not worth the effort you’d have to put into maintaining it. I personally thought your “Heart of the Sunrise” cover was an almost perfect sonic reproduction of the original. I am sure your viewers are grateful for the time and effort you have put into these covers, and while I’m sure you are striving for sonic perfection, you also must realize that most of us “ long haul” Yes fans are in our 60s or older. We simply love the music and have done so for a half-century now. Watching you play it adds another dimension to our appreciation of its complexity and compositional detail. When you have the time to do more of these, you will find that we really won’t be critical if you use a Korg instead of a Rocksichord! Thank you, by the way, for reading and responding to my posts. I’m sure your time is limited and I appreciate your answering my questions and explaining your equipment choices. Thank you again.

      @@BARxMusic well deserved, lol. Many, even us musicians, listen to a band like Yes, bul pay more attention, granted, to Howe and Squire's fireworks. They may marvel at Wakeman, but couldn't follow his hands, can't "see" what he's doing. You gave a great glance into that world, with the right sounds/voicings, and obvious chops.

    Fantastic Job. I'm trying to learn this song right now. How did you get the original stems or the recording with the keyboard stems removed? Those kind of things really help me. Appreciate it!

      I found the stems on a website which unfortunately doesn't seem to exist anymore. However, I've uploaded the stems here:

      @@BARxMusic Thanks a million for that! I also use a youtube channel by Jo PH that has a lot of stems on it. Check it out if you're looking for a part.
