Scott, you always give props to other Bass players which is very honorable. But your awesome Bass playing ability can not be overlooked. And as a Black man that grew up on Funk, you definitely have that Funk in your soul my brother. And it makes me smile from ear to ear every time I watch you doing your thing. Your teaching videos are outstanding, please don't ever stop sharing your positive energy and talent with us Sir.
Hear hear Red! Incidentally, despite all the basses that are out there, all the new shapes, new woods, 5 and 6 strings, etc, there's still no more beautiful bass than a good old Fender P.
1:17 This is what makes music so amazing. Watch the drummer’s face. No matter the style, how accomplished you are or how long you’ve played. When you get in that groove, you have to smile. Love that.
Sharay is my favorite bass player especially in gospel. He's the best. I play bass at church, and I've been wanting to learn his joy to the world lick forever lol
Ricthie Backmore once said that if you wanted to learn good lines an melodies and how to create great harmonic lines..guitarists should listen to sax players..:)
I love that you’re highlighting gospel players. I cut my teeth on these guys back in the early 90’s. Check out Lanar ‘Kern’ Brantley. He’s one of the best. He’s played for everyone, but my favorite gospel session of his is on The Winans “Live at Carnegie Hall.” Tasty slap player.
You sir, are a legend. I've been listening to this song, even played it at church service a couple of times, and yet, you have put a new twist to it on an awesome lesson!!!
That's just amazing, I'm a guitarist songwriter (last 50 years) and because I enjoy your wonderful videos! so much, I now have my 'Amoon' bass in hand...So it's down to the studio with this 4 stringed instrument , for 'blue glitter' bass lines. Thank you so much, you not only have a rare love for music but you have that also for teaching, thanks!
Amen, now you're a new man, old things are put away, I've been playing bass since 1968 and I can truly say, if you put God first he will put you first keep playing for the church and encourage the people of God, don't forget to learn a little piano too because sometimes single bass notes gets a little lonely when you need to hear a full chord when I put together a song, learning piano will come in handy. Playing bass since 1968 Playing Piano since 2012 I've learned how to play the piano from UA-cam 12 years ago. Right now it's March of 2024 still on fire.for our God gospel music is all I play amen.
Mr Devine...you spoil us sir!! This is an absolutely amazing and mind blowing lesson - one I'm going to use regularly...don't know how to say "Thank you" enough...needless to say I've forwarded to all my other Bass player buddies...you are an absolute gentleman....
Scott Bass... you have the best tutorials, actually ive been playing bass for 10years but I started afresh from your tutorials. You really explain well and my bass playing has changed since
Also check out Steve Huff. He was bass player for the Milton Brunson's Thompson Community Singers in 90's. He's a monster bassplayer with great lines and fills.
You're ubiquitous for bass here on UA-cam, and frankly I got tired of seeing "Why this bass sucks" "Why 5-string is this or that" etc. and I dismissed you, and avoided you. I clicked on this video accidentally, wow Scott you really are one hell of a player. What a great approach of taking a great fill & starting it on 2, 3, then 4. So brilliantly simple. Just great.
So good! Brilliant to take a simple lick and make it so versatile by starting on various beats. My brain just defaults to the same thing every time. This breaks me out of that cycle. And love Israel Houghton! Thanks for throwing in some gospel jams.
Just getting back into playing after 18 years and stumbled upon your channel. Awesome video. Aside from teaching how to play well, you're demonstrating how to have lots of fun while doing it. Your joy is infectious. Cheers mate!
I love you playing gospel music. Sounding fantastic. This was a really great lesson and something that can apply to any lick that anyone knows or are learning.
That puts a lot of things together, even finger positioning, in terms of right hand, and where you are going to be to be ready to drop down to the next string and which finger does what. Reversing that lick would be a cool asset to the fill catologue as well:)
That was a really powerful lesson. It takes everything you already know and puts it in a new context. 3 new contexts really. Thanks so much for this. That unlocked a lot of potential that’s been hiding in an elusive little corner for some time. I’m looking forward to “playing over the bar” soon.
Holy shit this video. 2 things. 1. I want the thumbnail to every video where Scott features another bassist to have Scott in the background giving the horns. Just like this one. 2. When you moved the lick to beat 3, I felt it. When you moved it beat 4, I made an ugly face and shouted "Damn!". Every time around. This is one of the best ones you've done yet, Scott. Much love. I'll be in the shed if you need me.
I've been keeping up with Reggie Young ever since he was a gospel bass player. This back in the 90s with Hezekiah Walker, James Hall and many other Gospel artists. You should do an interview with Reggie Parker another awesome Gospel bass player.
How many of my absolute FAVORITE gospel players can you include in one video??!? Another couple greats, that fit right in with these licks: Jermaine Morgan and Darrell Freeman!💛 Great lesson Scott.
Hopefully Scott reads this and starts to realise that he prattles on a bit :), maybe play the lick at the start of the video, half the time I give up wathing, but then I'm a dumb ass guitar player
Man you're such a joy to watch playing man. When you're feeling it, you know? I'm a guitarist myself but boy do you have me considering to get a proper P bass!
Awesome, that blew my mind. I’m a tuba player and can’t play that lick up to speed, but I have some bits of my own I’m going to try on all four counts!
Love this! Awesome lesson, just what I needed! As to facultymembers on SBL I would love to see more Gouchè. And offcourse like you mentioned Sharay Reed, but also Robert "Bubby" Lewis...also an AWESOME (gospel) bassist!!!
Till this day. I love the way Ant used to walk his bass lines. So timing in his licks and just goes with the song he's playing at the moment. Anthony just had it😂
Yeaaaa I'm a Newbie with the Bass, Been playing Guitar & Harmonica for Years. Semi-Retired Pro Stagehand & Tech. Now have a home Recording Studio and Getting Serious. Ready to make my mark, ThanxXx \m/ @@ \m/ Sooo Much You Are Appreciated
This video was absolutely amazing. Love the introduction to Gospel bass playing. When Israel Houghton came up and you started playing wow, More please. You gotta talk to Maurice Fitzgerald, Reggie Parker and Joel Smith.
If you see this... I’d like to know where you get your gloves? I have psoriatic arthritis and sometimes when I press on the strings it feels like needles poking my fingers. Is that the symptom you get?
Sharay's church knockout is without peer. You'd find him today in such loving humility. He has an upright history, too. It gave him the feel he has for POSITION of the fretting hand. Ask him. I'm sure he will interact with you. He did with me.
What a cool lick! The start of it, at a much slower pace, sounds so much like the basic riff to an old Motown song from the 50's-60's??? What could it be, I'm drawing a blank, here....
A video on Gospel bass playing... this looks cool I might check this out. (Looks at thumbnail closer) ... and then there’s Scott casually doing devil horns in the background
After playing guitar for many years, I started messing with the bass not long ago, and when I started fooling around with this lick concept, I realized I kinda already used it. But, as a guitar player, I stayed with the pick i was already comfortable with, instead of using fingers like most bassists, so I play this with kind of a chicken-pickin' style, with clicks and ghost notes, which basically works, but it loses some musical notes and doesn't have that thumpy "bass riff" sound you're getting with your fingers. Anyway, cool lesson, as always !
Funny thing about a tremendous number of gospel players is that most of them can't read, write or understand music but what comes from their soul can't be denied...
How cool is this?! I've just filled up with energy for all weekend! Tonight my Funk Blues band is having a gig, I'm going to try out some of this stuff
Been playing bass for a year (started late - aged 53) and inspired by your videos, and love gospel so keep it up please. Check out Alan Snoop Evans he has played on Fred Hammond (someone else I would love you chat to) tracks and he is amazing.
Scott, I’ve been on the fence for a while about signing up to become a member. (Mainly due to not having internet or a computer/laptop) but I promise you no excuses. My hand on a stack of Bibles, if you do a teaching course with Abraham Laboriel. I will make it happen and become a member.
Scott, you always give props to other Bass players which is very honorable. But your awesome Bass playing ability can not be overlooked.

here here! sometimes i have to rewatch videos cause i forget I'm trying to learn from Scott and not just watch and admire his abilities!!
Hear hear Red! Incidentally, despite all the basses that are out there, all the new shapes, new woods, 5 and 6 strings, etc, there's still no more beautiful bass than a good old Fender P.
@@DamnZoobler EXACTLY!!
Massive, and he exudes such joy while playing.
Scotty the Truth!
Uhhhhh....this guy Scott is a sick...sick...sick azzzzz bass player! Lets give Scott some love for being such a great musician!!!!
Gospel Bassists are pure 🔥.
Those guys ALWAYS amaze me.
🔥🔥🔥
Interesting choice for the thumbnail there, making devil horns behind a gospel player.
Scott has been worshiping Satan for years dude I thought everyone knew about that. Sold his soul for bass chops.
You're the last person I expected to see here Adam
u telling me adam ragusea left a comment and in a whole 2 years only got 14 likes? crazy
I agree 🤔
😂😂

I'm a sax player and have no bass ambitions at all, but your videos are great fun and always informative! Keep em coming.
Graeme Gerrard
Im a bass player and have no sax ambitions at all, why is this sounding gross when a bass player says it haha just jokin man!
I’ve been a sax player for 24 years, but I’m also learning the bass, and will be learning lead.
Ricthie Backmore once said that if you wanted to learn good lines an melodies and how to create great harmonic lines..guitarists should listen to sax players..:)
originally started on Sax and switched to bass!
Graeme Gerrard I’m a guitar player....and I learnt the bass TO PERFECTION..........in less than a week. #toolofignorance 🕶
I knew Scott was good, but when i saw this video my respect for his bass playing went through the roof.
April 2020 and I’ve come back to this not to learn the lick but to rewatch your jam at the beginning to the song 😭👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Thanks for FINALLY mentioning some of gospel music's incredible bassists👌👍!

Priceless. We Black folks in states know the UK got SOUL for days. They keep tasty across the pond. Scotty's bass face says it all. Great stuff.
Scott Bass... you have the best tutorials, actually ive been playing bass for 10years but I started afresh from your tutorials. You really explain well and my bass playing has changed since
I just love the groove fills you added on the song aside from the main lick. Great to hear. Can't stop repeating this video. 👍👍👍😁
I honestly think this is one of the best videos you have ever done, thank you for sharing.
Also check out Steve Huff. He was bass player for the Milton Brunson's Thompson Community Singers in 90's. He's a monster bassplayer with great lines and fills.
Dude, I haven't played in 30 years but this is damn near inspiring me to pick it back up.
Hope u did brother 🎸
Abraham "Abe Bass" Laboriel!
10:10-10:17 was the best part in this whole video. I've never heard any bassists rip the bridge apart like that! STRAIGHT FIREEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!

Always love your no-nonsense, GREAT engaging presentations. Sir Scott.
3:21..... teach my wise one!!! That was the cleanest lick I have ever heard with this song and I love that song lol
I love you playing gospel music. Sounding fantastic. This was a really great lesson and something that can apply to any lick that anyone knows or are learning.
Amazing! I’ve decided to pick the bass back up. Your skills and passion are truly motivational.
That puts a lot of things together, even finger positioning, in terms of right hand, and where you are going to be to be ready to drop down to the next string and which finger does what. Reversing that lick would be a cool asset to the fill catologue as well:)
Did not think Scott could handle gospel genre!! He is a beast!!!!!!!
Scott, you gotta get SHARRAY REED in there mate. His fills and mute techniques, double taps a-la James Jamerson/Chuck Rainey like, are amazing.
BlackRoots UNLIMITED TShaka Roots Mayanja 🙏🏼
And your wish came true lol
That was a really powerful lesson. It takes everything you already know and puts it in a new context. 3 new contexts really. Thanks so much for this. That unlocked a lot of potential that’s been hiding in an elusive little corner for some time. I’m looking forward to “playing over the bar” soon.
I'd love for you to get Abraham Laboriel.
Favorite
I agree. Abe would be a great pick!
Abraham Laboriel inspired me back in the day
The great abe!! 😊
He was one of the reasons I really worked on bass when I was younger...
Holy shit this video. 2 things.

Watching how much fun you had while demonstrating this is great.
Scott, I love what you do for my playing, or my attempts to play 😉. Thank you! 👊🏿👊🏿

1:02 his drummer has that " oh this stupid thing again" look on his face
😆
Ahahahhahaahaahaaah
Mad respect, but that thing is dumb as hell lol.
hahahahahaha
I played several Israel Houghton songs at church. Wow they were fun fun fun on the bass
Awesome man... I started doing that once I get it.. and my drummer would go crazy every time I did it....thanks man
Scott, you killin it, bruh!!! Great playing, my man.
How many of my absolute FAVORITE gospel players can you include in one video??!?
Another couple greats, that fit right in with these licks: Jermaine Morgan and Darrell Freeman!💛
Great lesson Scott.
I love this stuff!
Gospel and Jazz are my favourite to play!
Thanks for the lesson, and calling out Sharay Reed. He's on tour with Corey Henry, definitely worth checking out live!
Thanks so much Scott! I dig every last one of your gospel licks! I'd love to see Maurice Fitzgerald breakdown.
🤜🏾⚡🤛🏻
5:20 is where he stops talking and starts to explain the lick. (Which is essentially a sequenced pentatonic).
Nelson Montana thank you
You, sir, are a hero. Thanks!
Hopefully Scott reads this and starts to realise that he prattles on a bit :), maybe play the lick at the start of the video, half the time I give up wathing, but then I'm a dumb ass guitar player
Maybe a bit harsh! I think when he's on point, he's great, the selfie shots and yacking though. I'm not a fan of those bits
I'm actually a huge fan of his vid production! Variety keeps me interested. Way to go Scott
Some of the gospel guys have insane skills, it's worth exploring different music genres.
Du bist ein wirklich toller Bassist. Ich liebe deine Natürlichkeit, deine Einlassung auf alle Bassisten und dein Können!! Wunderbar!!
Man you're such a joy to watch playing man. When you're feeling it, you know? I'm a guitarist myself but boy do you have me considering to get a proper P bass!
Really love matching
the theory to the "feel". Putting this in on Sunday!
I'm a metal guy, but this stuff pops. Love it
Awesome, that blew my mind. I’m a tuba player and can’t play that lick up to speed, but I have some bits of my own I’m going to try on all four counts!
Tried this on my bass, it just slap me back. Cool stuff sir
Love this! Awesome lesson, just what I needed! As to facultymembers on SBL I would love to see more Gouchè. And offcourse like you mentioned Sharay Reed, but also Robert "Bubby" Lewis...also an AWESOME (gospel) bassist!!!
Thx! You are the greatest! I love Your Tutorials!! Greetings from Germany!
You're brilliant mate and you have got a great attitude. I really like this channel
This video and its teachings are SO useful, no matter which instrument you play as well! Many thanks!
Reggie is awesome!!! Scott you should be doing more gospel because this is one of the greatest times I have heard your fantastic tone..
This is just awesome stuff.....keep posting more about playing gospel riffs/stylings.....Kudos Scott !
Anthony Jackson is the earliest proponent of 'over the bar' playing that I can think of. Way before the gospel guys.
JnrRumble
Yep. Especially when he was with
Steve Khan and Eyewitness in the late 70's and real early 80's
A lot of gospel guys were inspired by Anthony Jackson.
Till this day. I love the way Ant used to walk his bass lines. So timing in his licks and just goes with the song he's playing at the moment. Anthony just had it😂
James Jameson did with Motown before AJ. Listen to "It's a Shame" by the Spinners and For Once In My Life...Stevie Wonder's version.

3.20 to 3.26. Sir you're just too smooth....Im on the floor...beautiful
I could tell you were having so much fun with this video. It would be dope if you had Daric Bennett on here. He’s a monster on bass.
If you see this... I’d like to know where you get your gloves? I have psoriatic arthritis and sometimes when I press on the strings it feels like needles poking my fingers.
Is that the symptom you get?
I would love to see Sharay Reed on here!
Very Nice man, every lesson keep being better. Thumbs up from Brazil 🇧🇷
Can you post a cover of this song? Your playing over it is fantastic
Great video!
Letsssss go I’ve been wanting to get into gospel bass, this is perfect

Such a fun tip - and will be scouring the comments for more gospel players to look at, as I've been really digging gospel grooves lately!
Holy cow my mind is blown. Please more gospel videos thanks
