Bass Legend Vs “The SBL Session Challenge”
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 лют 2025
- If you’ve ever wondered what the session legends are thinking the first time they’re faced with recording a track they’ve never seen or heard before… this lesson is for you.
I was lucky enough to get Sharay Reed (yep, the man, the myth and the legend!) into the studio for you guys…
We talked about a tonne of stuff, but right at the end of our conversation we thought it’d be fun to put Sharay on the spot.
Here’s what we did…
We gave him a lead sheet to a piece of music he’d never seen before.
We then got him to talk through his thought process when looking at a new piece of music.
And then… we hit record and he performed the entire piece.
Zero run through.
Just red light - GO!
Ready to see what happened next?! ;)
As always, see you in the shed…
Scott :)

I went to that church when I was in Chicago. Honestly there are tons of unknown bass beast all over the gospel scene.
Church musicians in general are some of the most talented around.
White church have whole different set of setlist
Sharay Reed is one of the greatest bassists to walk this Earth. We are truly blessed to know him.
Sharay is incredible and seems like such a nice, humble guy.
Meet him at a Cory Henry’s concert. He is definitely one of the humblest guys around!
Theeeeeee humblest dude in the industry. Ridiculously professional. The truth all around.
@@sliverhandsonbasses Ditto, met him and Cory and they're both so nice!
He is I spoke to him personally he play at my church on my rig and gave a few pointers
He really is one of the nicest person. Met him a little bit over a year ago when he gave a master class at my college in South America
I saw Sharay Reed here in Orlando at a Yolanda Adams concert and he was kicking it with his blue Ibanez 5 string TMB 35,smooth and supportive as you might expect
This Dude is so freaking good. Tasteful and elegant flowing like water bass playing.
I've had the opportunity to record percussion on a session with Sharay. The best and the most humble guy you will ever meet. SHARAY is the guy!!!!
Scott, I saw the vids many years ago and of course almost cried due to needing to sell my basses instantly thereafter.
But what's important here is this: he's an amazing soul of a human. I wrote him and he wrote back. He sent DVDs of his instructional vids to me with handwritten labels on them. Imagine the privilege of him being a quiet, sober HUMAN with a stranger.
SO consistent with your great spirit, Scott, is this celebration of SR by you. You are a bright light.
Very helpful to see what a great pro like Sharay does when you put a piece of sheet music for the 1st time in front of him. What a great idea Scott of putting the chords on the screen as he plays, so we can play along and compare. Awesome!! That is exactly what I expect from a bass lesson. Thanks for that great video Scott. More of this pls!
agree. more stuff like this in the future would be fantastic!
Seriously? Maaan! Not only the fills but just the feel is ridiculous! You don't learn this in a book. It just got to be released. Period. Hats off!
experience helps
@@xlaythe depends if you call experience just a number of years practicing or being consistent at the right place at the right time. playing in church helps a lot. Lots of cats that never played in church that are phenomenal. But when you look at Cory Henry these cats are playing with a feel that only faith can give. Gospel music is also a combo between several styles/genres. It opens up on the world. It depends on how curious and consistent we are to explore further not only music but life in general. Peace bro!
Unlike many 5 string players, this guy knows how to use the B string beyond the extender range
That is so amazing. Sharay's take is so perfect, absolutely no mistakes , no weak parts, better than flawless... inspired. I wish I could do that.
Really lovely to see Sharay expand upon the chord progression as the song progressed, moving from tip-toeing through the chords into a skillful dance in and around them and showing a ton of personality. Phenomenal playing!
Those were definitely "Untitled (How Does It Feel)" by D'Angelo chords lol! Such a tasteful progression.
💯💯
Scott doing a pretty good job of keeping his composure. I’d be by the door ready to run out on the street after hearing the first 30 seconds of Sharay. Def a Hall of Fame bassist.
He makes the notes sound righteous just like how gospel lines should be.😂😂😂 This guy is so good. My mentor
What I love is how quickly he transitions from playing a basic background to really shaping something that intertwines with the rest of the music being played and adds unique flavor. It is awesome!
Scott, this is EYE OPENING. What a great, invaluable insight. See ya at the Academy.
Dear Scott first of all i would like to thank you for the 1 week bass mini course(it was awesome!) you're a really great teacher but most importantly a good person and that shows through your videos you've made all these years. Secondly for a guy at my age (born in '78) it"s a privilege to watch a video like this one, because we didn't have access to all that information.Plus that it is really wonderful to see such a great bass player create something so tasteful on the fly.So the conclusion for those who pressed dislike is...DON'T BE UNGRATEFUL FOR WHAT YOU'RE GIVEN!!!
+Sharay Reed is a class act! Absolute perfection.
Sharay played bass at a church that I engineer at in 2006 so I have known him 15 years. We also played a couple of sessions together. Sharay is the truth on bass.
Sharay was the reason I picked up the bass and he is the reason I put it away lol for real
Lol
🤭
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Very funny lol
Pick up that bass and learn from him:) Get back on it!!
Love it! Thaddeus Tribbett would be great!!
Ben Molinaro yessah Thaddeus’s Tribbett
Yess!!
10:42 gosh that delayed D. In love with his playing. Thank you
Ran across Sharay on UA-cam about two years ago when I was trying to up my gospel chops. Absolutely electrifying player. Thank you so much for this video!
That was fun to watch! I was really surprised at the variety of plucking technique Sharay uses and those double stops were so sweet.
Chief Groove-tastic Groove meister Sharay Reed!! 🔥
Still watching and loving it even though I can't understand a single thing they're saying
My homies and I saw the original VHS (or copy of) way before it hit youtube! Completely blew our minds, the playing + energy. Been a huge fan of his for 20+ years!! #legend
Is it me or was Sharay already interacting with the guitar parts in the second and particular the third repetition? Amazing musician. And I don't mean his technical skills, which are top-level, but his amazing musicality.
Yeah, especially the part at 9:05 to 9:10 was pretty amazing!
Yeah that was one of the things that really stuck out to me!
Definitely caught that! It was beautiful 🙌🏿
@@Psykel I liked 10:36 to 10:42. That cheeky little hang through the chord change.
identiticrisis exactly. So smooth
That held-in smile is so contagious. It's always amazing to see people so entrenched in the music.
Well, Sharay juts killed! He's an amazing musician and, I just enjoyed the groove and tone. I'd like to watch the great Abe Laboriel playing something. He is a legend and one of the greatest influences in the bass world. Thanks, Scott!
Definitely Abe!!!!
I cannot like this video enough. Just one like doesn't cut it at all. Sharay is pure musical joy. Wow.
🧡🧡🧡
One of the most informative bass videos I’ve seen. Thanks so much Scott!!!
A real pro in action. Learning your theory makes you so much more fluent in any environment and allows improvising to be much easier. This guy’s playing is phenomenal.
That tone is out of this world!
Geez. Love this. Could watch it ALL DAY. Thanks guys!
l had no idea who he was until l've seen him live with Cory Henry. Got the chance to talk to him after the show, awesome, sweet, layed back dude!
Wow! Sharpy is such a soulful player and he is so humble too. Thank you Scott. I have been following you since 2014. I am glad to have seen all your evolution(playing, house, location, basses, etc...). Take care!
OK SBL guys. This one was a nice video: seeing how a pro approaches a session has value in it. You could do more videos like this :)
Gentleman and a scholar. I love this dude. Had the privilege of sharing the stage with him last summer opening for The Funk Apostles... I've never danced so hard at a concert in my life. LOL just amazing.
His musical approach it’s absolutely mind blowing. WOW!! 😮 😮
When we talk about ‘master’ of a craft… this… this is what that looks like.
This is masterful playing. His attitude is so right too.
Not hard to see why everyone and anyone has wanted to hire him to put bass on their work.
He’s the guy. THE guy.
The dude is a true blessing to music. A joy to witness.
Amazing....!!! Pure artistry.... How about Nathan East, next.
I love the satisfaction, pleasure, peace, and relaxation in his face as he does what he loves while helping, teaching, and inspiring others.
Sharay Reed!!
Insane. I play by ear so I feel the music. But there's no way that I could ever -- EVER! -- read something for the first time and interpret it like that. Raw natural talent is an unfair thing. Genius!
I would love to see a sit down interview thing with Rocco and Pino Palladino. Would be super interesting to watch how they both approach crafting their basslines
Sharay has and will always be one of my favorite bassists. Such a talent and God given gift he has. Simply Amazing
He is my favorite bass player! Thanks for this video! Yeeey
Absolutely amazing! There are a ton of things to praise here but what really struck me was Sharay's right hand thumb-and-index-finger technique. I've never seen that before. At first I was thinking, wow, how's he articulating those notes so quickly just with his thumb? Then I noticed his index finger. Very cool way to get that classic thumb sound but still play fast notes.
Jesus friggin Christ. It's like he's known and played this tune his whole life. Magic.
I think seeing someone as great as Sharay, doing what he does, has changed my life. Amazing to see the man work.
I would love to see Esperanza Spalding!
Wowww... totally
😋😍
You sound nice
Absolutely!
@@@thebabbler8867 huh?? About Esperanza??
That first double stop when he's ready to just let it fly is so smooth and so sweet, just Mmmm
Dude walks in eyeballs a piece of music he's never seen before talks a bit about is even polite enough to act slightly apprehensive. Then proceeds to make sweet love to it like it was a girlfriend from back in the day hitting all her spots. Damn I miss playing bass....
you got a way with words my friend
Sir! With your dialect, you should have any woman you want lol. You summed it up.
Well tell the story man 😂👏🏿 I couldn't agree more 😎
Damn did you trade playing bass for professional writing??
Media Addict 😂😂😂
YES! The is one of the coolest ideas I've seen on UA-cam. It's such an impressive showcase of talent, taste, and technical knowledge. Mind blowing.
ABRAHAM LABORIEL.. Whether or not you dig his genre, surely you gotta get him while he's still around..
hear hear
Yasssssss! The man that inspired me to get a 6 string bass! Señor Laboriel!!!
Am I dreaming? The Sharay Reed on Scott's channel? Mind blowin'
Sounds like Untitled by Dangelo in the beginning.
Yup the whole first section of the verses... I figured notice the tease before the composer flipped it. 😃
Until that Chrono Trigger-like chord progression came in.
the 5th minor , just ... delicious
I scrolled for this before making the same comment.
This guy put a smile on my face I just can't shake. Inspiring!
I just took my rig and set on fire, i'm taking up stamp collecting!!!!!
Sharay Reed was a 2 year ago jaw drop for me.. trying to get over it.. nope not yet! Love this man.. your amazing too Scotty!
love your vids scott :) mononeon and mohini dey would be really interesting
medioculus o YES!!!! Mono!!!!!
medioculus o definitely agree with Mono Neon
One thing I like about your courses is that you go into the technicals of creating the actual bass guitar Sounds/Tones. Most tutors don't do that. Great work.
Next, please get ANTHONY JACKSON ✊🏿👊🏿
BlackRoots UNLIMITED TShaka Roots Mayanja YES!!
ALL OF MY YES TO THIS COMMENT!!
Oh yes! AJ would be a real draw! That’d be amazing!
Met this brother on tour last year. One of the best to do it! Gave me great advice!
Get Pino!!!!
YUP.
Nope.
Yes, you should!
And get his son Rocco too
Coop JA +1 for Rocco
I just love watching people who can just break down the score.. I'm not great at reading music (always just played by ear etc) so to see someone understand it all, it makes me smile Haha :)
Very nice double stop!!
Please, invite Michael League from Snarky Puppy! Thank you
He already did, but no video yet.
Above Sharay's incredible ability at bass playing, is his gentle voice....I could listen to this Cat talk all day about anything. I dont know man, but I kindda feel that his voice reflects the kind of person he is inside..that is 'Gentle' and 'kind'.
how about THE Paul Turner next? :D Sharay certainly kicked some serious arse here, amazing
😢😢😢 The Beauty of the transition from the script to the instrument as well as the mind of the great Sharay Reeds. Love it man🎸💯. More please 🙌🙌🙌🙌
Find you someone who looks at you like Sharay looks at his music 10:50
I love this! I find it really helpful and informative to watch people put their skills to work. It’s great to hear the process he goes through when he first looks at the piece.
Hey Scot hello fron Nicaragua, meaby you can do a vídeo whit Abran Laboriel
YES🙌🏽
OMG!! Probably one of the best videos i have ever watched!! Thanks u so so much for bringing stuff like this one to us man!!! Wow!!!!
Legendary.
As I've stated elsewhere; Sharay is in another universe. The rest of us are trying to find it. His mastery of the tone of his instrument is light years beyond any human understanding. His subtle sub-plucking of chord tones above the root he's playing to highlight the main tone... I'm telling you. He's not from this realm. The amount of work you have to put in to achieve this is not outer worldly...it's extra-universal!
Nice... awesome to see how a pro works a new song. Goodness that would take weeks for me to pull something like that off. Just amazing!
How about John Patitucci and Jimmy Haslip and Marcus Miller any of those guys will do...👍
Living Legend!!!! My favorite gospel bass player .🔥🔥🔥
what a rythm sense
WOW!!!! Mr. Sharay👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 outstanding!!! I never understood why bass players make those faces until I started trying to learn how to play...YOU REALLY FEEL THE NOTES
2 that I would like to see are Darrell Freeman and Kaybass Diggs.
One thing that's so impressive is how tasteful his choices are. He could have stuffed way more notes in there, but he really found a groove that worked with the music.
Derrick Hodge
Sharay, amazing! you are SO great. Scott, thanks so much for this.
Michael league and Thaddeus Tribbett
I don't know why but I get a real sentimental feeling hearing and seeing this, thnx, you made my day.
Get Abe Laboriel in here
Oh yes! My all time favourite live bass player. 2nd only to Jamerson in my book. Thank you thank you for this unique idea of filming world-class session and livee musicians getting good of a piece of music for the first time. Sharay's playing was sublime, beautiful, pure class.
Les Claypool an yes you chose a Great Man of God to do this 13th viewer
You tell bass Legend i really respect him an his mindset on doing bass is Extreamly helpful an please purchus him some dunlop strapLocks
Bravo bravo bravicimo
holy shit. You spend so much time listening to someone play, and then maybe 9 years listening to the dude's bass note, you finally hear hist voice. Not what I imagined :o
GET JOE DART ON THE CHANNEL!!!!!
What a killer tone... I usually like big and chunky in your face tones like clay gober or something similar, but his is so warm and articulate. Awesome!
Get Stefan Lessard from DMB! Underrated bassist, in my opinion.
Love the insight into his thought process!! More of this!!!
That bass face doe.
10 minute mark. Jeebus, his intuition and scaler construction on the fly are amazing.
a7sus4 wouldnt have a "three rubbing against the four" isnt that the whole point of a sus chord? That you are suspending the third in favor of the fourth? Meaning fourth instead of third? Isnt a7sus4 A D G (E) ?
i also thought that was bullshit but he is a much better muscian than me
@@youngevil353 He's better than me too, I just know some theory that maybe he doesn't I guess, or maybe he simply misspoke because he was being filmed and distracted by all that.
I think you are exactly right
I think he meant that he shouldn't play a third over this chord.
He definitely misspoke
First time I heard him is when i had the chance to play some music with him on a audition for making his band. This was a MTV show for p diddy. I can remember it like yesterday, me and him were locked and the one judge for the shows face went right to stank face!! Sharay didnt continue on the show because he knew the contract sucked and probably had a better gig lined up anyways. I made it to the house in la and then got kicked off the first challenge. It's so awesome to see him represent chicago all over the world. Keep up your great work sharay, the musicians of chicago are so proud of you and your ministry!!!!
