You could have called this video 'pentatonic scales with hammer-ons and pull-offs' but you didn't. A sign of a great educator, someone who has a purpose as the core of every lesson. Thanks for this, Scott.
More gospel bass pretty please. I have learned so much from your academy, Scott. I play bass at my church and it would be helpful to hear how gospel bassists navigate contemporary Christian and gospel music since there are usually no bass lines, per se, in the songs. The keyboards have a ton of chords to play and the low end is just keeping up with the roots. At lease that's where I am. Anyway, it would be great to get some insight.
Try learning to any bass player that you encounter. adapt whatever useful they are doing and specially find a good bass player mentor who knows what they are doing. and practice, practice, practice.
_Fractal _ I have learned a lot from Scott's Bass Lessons and loads of other people on UA-cam. Of course practice is how younger better, but I have found that playing what you practice is essential. By that, I mean try new things in your playing and venture away from starting on the root.
Thank you so much Scott. You are the best Teacher with a lovely english accent. I'm learning soo much from you. It's a real pleasure to listen to you. You can make my day even after hard work in the office.
Wow, I have to comment again! This is exactly what I needed, geez....your the only one who can explain this stuff for "at least me" to understand!! I finally can move on, seeing this in context with an explanation is exactly what I needed!! Thanks Mr. Pajama pants!! (With the upmost respect;)
Thanks for this Scott! I play in a worship band on Sunday mornings and I have been trying to figure out what these guys are doing, Justin Raines especially. They play laid back and then do a super-fast fill that I haven't been able to decode. Now I know where to start! Bless you, bro!
I’m just finding this now in 2022 and I have been looking for a good explanation of the bones of gospel bass. Thanks a ton for the work you did 5 years ago!
Thanks Scott for the Gospel Lesson , all the others. You've really helped me out a lot .. as a Former Drummer .. Now Bass Player I really am advancing in all my Technics , Skills , Nowledge of Scales , Modes , Theory .. and much more .. I have been fortunate to have Worked with some Great Musicians in L.A. on Drums that also Embrace me as I have done the Transition to Bass. So Thank You .. keep the Videos Coming , Keep On Smiling, Rocking. Stevie
man, often I think 'what's the point, I suck anyways and have no talent on this', but your teaching stuff is the only reason I haven't sold my bass yet.
A great 3-4 lesson plan on the Academy (of which I'm a member) would be a couple gospel/worship bassists in while in NYC or home in the UK for how Bass fit in worship. Would be AWESOME! And I'm a member so yea I'd love that!
Great lesson, let me add just one thing, it is that the main character of the pentatonic is that it doesnt has any semitones, in fact the notes you extract from mayor/minor are the ones that cause semitones to appear. So the gospel/bluessy/juicy thing comes in when you add them, of course it depends on where you do that what type of feel you get, so experiment adding semitones to the pentatonics to find interesting things.
You know Scott; thx to your channel I discovered Joe Dart, which in its turn made me pick up the Bass. Again. Greatly inspired. So now I'm "Back-in-the-Saddle-again" developing my playing. So many thanks to your choices of inspiration - Gospel bassists really kicks some *ss😝👍😇
Love ur love for bass playing Scott!! Thanx and more gospel please! My favorites: Gouche on Bebe Winans album "Cherch"... Thaddeus Tribbet with Tye... Tommy Brown on CLC Choir "Only What u do For Christ" and Louisiana All State Youth Choir "I'm Saved"... Tommy is the best "unrecognized" gospel bass player imho... and of course many others...
Thank you so much scott!! I was able to play what I didn't think I would ever be able to do. I am only about 1 1/2 years in, and I can play stuff like this, just not as fast. You know how I was able to play this? Scott and PRACTICE. I practice about an hour to 2 hours every day.
Can you analyze for us the bass lines in the clip (BASS SESSIONZ VOL. 3 (Full DVD) Justin Raines, Kaybass Diggs, Daric Bennett, and Alan "Snoop" Evans) at line: 1:28:33
You are an insane musician, much love and respect, regardless every time I watch one of your videos the gloves throw me off. EVERY SINGLE TIME. I know you wear them, my mind just cant seem to register that as okay or normal haha
"They exclude the seventh a lot of the time..."
That's because in the world of gospel, you rest on the seventh. ;-)
lol... Can't believe it took me a while to get that...
neuralprobe hahaha, happy Sabbath!
I see what you did there
That took me a really long time to get. Good on you sir.
Sooo going to use this one.
Ha! Good stuff Scott 👍🏾
Pentecostal Pentatonics, what a concept!
Illuminati confirmed!
Scott never gives up on us. Great maestro
I hear that pajama pants improve your tone by 50%! Now you just need the deep V-neck shirt to go with them!
You could have called this video 'pentatonic scales with hammer-ons and pull-offs' but you didn't. A sign of a great educator, someone who has a purpose as the core of every lesson. Thanks for this, Scott.

we're the same, I learn a lot from scott and help me grow as a bass player. I also play bass at the church.
Michele Pollard I'm actually just starting to play for my church and I've discovered that I have sooo much to learn. Have any suggestions?

you could try triads instead of just roots
Thank you so much Scott. You are the best Teacher with a lovely english accent. I'm learning soo much from you. It's a real pleasure to listen to you. You can make my day even after hard work in the office.

Yes! I've been waiting for this lesson, Scott. And because no gigs tonight... I'm in my pyjamas!
Grew up playing gospel bass and it really helped my feel. My kiddo is getting more and more into bass and is starting to get that smooth, funky feel.
