Awesome licks!! My only suggestion would be to explain the theory behind each one of the licks in terms of “why” those notes were played in relation to the chord tones from the progression.
The theory to licks are modes and the notes played are notes that sound good. Licks are combination of notes ideas that sound and feel good. It also playing within chord changes. The thing about lick and groove is just learn many of them from others and in no time you will be able to create your own.
@@chigozieobialor1245 Well I think players here ask for the "theory behind", because "somebody" could directly say "sounds good" or "not so good". I think Steve's intention is to "know in advance" where this lick is applyable or fitting to be able to use them "in a song" appropriate. And if you don't know which lick is in which scala / mode, you screw it, when you play a major-lick on a minor-chord (simplified!!! There's much more). Or to know, how you can alter the lick to make it fit.
Yeah, I would appreciate that, too. But the licks and the playing is cool, so what I do: Try them, look which notes (not in C-D-E style but in root-third-fifth-style) are in there, what chord they are played to and then try to apply this to other songs. And watch for the chords (e.g. major / minor). And for me, the exact lick Jermaine played ... one thing, cool stuff. But I'm not learning these riffs "exactly". They give me ideas, to break out of my "standard-playing". So trying them out ... saying "ohohoh, that's a cool move, never had the idea to do _that_ move" and add this to my patterns for building my own riffs. Search for playalong tracks on UA-cam - there are so many. You will find some matching your style. And then try out the licks and alter them. Have very much fun and a nice evening!
The first lick is the pentatonic (123 56) from the base chord C#. C# - 1 D# - 2 F - 3 F# - 4 G# - 5 A# - 6 C - 7 Then the first lick will be like: 565 321 65 4 Why he's playing like that? Coz he's running from 6th chord to 4th chord
Duuuuuuuude, thanks. I'm a multi-instrumentalist worship leader and I've just started taking bass seriously for the new team I am in, this is fab stuff.
Hey guys thanks for the comments. Not sure if you all are aware but these licks are not exclusive to 6 string bass just because they were played on 6 string. All of the licks take place within the 4 strings E-A-D-G... Just ignore the Top B String and High C String if you have to... Sorry that it's confusing to some of you.
Jermaine Morgan - Bass Lessons Thank you for the lesson, it was very helpful and the grooves were awesome. But I would appreciate it if you used 4 strings in other lower-level videos. The six string immediately through me off.
Jermaine Morgan - Bass Lessons FIRE!!! this actually delayed me going to sleep.. why you gotta do us like that J?? Making me pick up my bass all late at night..
Thank you for posting. I love your style of teaching. Too many out there over explaining and taking to long to get through even one lick. Likin and subscribin and notifyin today.
The feeling when you can play an advanced lick within 15 minutes and feel the progress of practice :). Great licks bro, I learned a lot feeling from these licks.
Great lesson brother and even though l consider myself as a beginner the more advanced demos gave inspiration for me to push for higher playing development....Thank you so much l really appreciate it.
Tasty licks with a great groove! It is really nice to get tips from a pro like you, it makes me to challenge myself and helps to improve. Thank you very much!
Sweet. Just learned the first three and jammed on them. A bit messy but great to practice to get perfect with speed. Can’t wait to learn all of these and practice them. And check out more of your videos
Saturday morning. I watched and very much appreciate your video, your talent and your valuable time you take to teach. I think I got it. I am having a little bit of hard time "translating" the breadth of the 6 string to four string as I'm still kinda stuck in the "keys" and a challenge is good.
& another thing: your backing track is nice. The licks sit nicely over it. That’s a huge aspect of getting something into your playing isn’t it? The VIBE... we only ever truly learn something by making positive associations & that’s why the groove & the atmosphere are so important in ‘absorbing’ new licks etc!!...
Hey Jermaine man, I am Larry Mitchell, I have been watching you play the different bass licks on your bass, and really appreciate you slowing the vedios down so that a player like myself could learn more. Thank you and God bless you, for taking the time out to teach someone else like myself
Thank you for this. I'm a beginner who has been playing a about a year and 4 months and I was able to learn the first 5 of these. But I can't play the 5th one up to speed yet
Awesome Lesson, it even works on my 5 string ;) lol. Jermaine, I see some guys with the headband on their headstock, what context do you tend to use that in? Out of curiosity. Thanks, all the best!
Thanks for this video. I have a Sammick 5-string bass guitar-Greg Bennett design and want to replace the strings. Can you advice on what to consider before replacing bass strings?
This video is really really cool. The 1-5-6-4 is one of the most extremely more common progressions and this definitely pushes the knowledge of the pentatonic scales just out of the box when playing over that relative minor chord and the 4. Thanks dude really cool shops.
Great video! And I love your logo - combining the bass-clef with yout "J" is really cool! So I was specially searching to this "half-tone-fast-sliding-thing". Sadly, you sometimes omitted it in the slower version, but I think I got it. Heard that really often from cool bass players, but I wasn't sure what's going on there. So I will go thru your video in detail and try out. And try to get "on which note that can fit" ... Great inspiration! One small thing: Your bass is really a beauty and sounds great. I love my basses without markers on the fretboard, too. But for "instructional videos" it's more easy to "see" where you are on the fretboard, if the bass has markers (how do you say? I'm no native english guy) at 3-5-7-etc. But keep going, liked, will watch more of your channel! Thanks, Stefan
I like being challenged to the next level of playing bass, it always helps to know basic scales and chords but also develop a good ear. Good dexterity always makes a better and much clearer bass tone, the four fret finger technique does help you become a better bass player.
good lesson I'm a bass player of 14 years... bout time for me to go from intermediate to advanced and im looking for all i can with all the time i have available
