      Brandon C- That trailer is not much of a match. It's basically aluminum and fiberglass, with foam insulation. The strongest part of it is the steel chassis. But they are powerful machines none the less.

    This is probably a dumb question, but why didn't they pull #9 onto the switch like they did, except leave #117 attached... Then #117 pulls the whole train up past the switch and they back #9 down and couple it onto the end of the train? A single P42 is more than capable to pull the train and not only would have such an operation been faster, it also wouldn't have left the passengers without HEP during the switching procedure.

Fruit Growers was in Alexandria, VA. He started in 1956 at the age of 21. He was still there when the yard closed for good around 1986. As far as I know it has not been re purposed. The original buildings and track are, probably still there. It's been years since I was last in that area of Alexandria.
    Northern Virginia has a long history of railroading. I grew up in Manassas which started out a railroad junction that was destroyed during the Civil War. First and Second Manassas (Bull Run) took place here. Because of our close proximity to Washington, DC (10 miles), there was heavy fighting throughout Northern VA. There are hundreds of Historical Markers in the region and numerous historic Civil War- era buildings to visit.

    We used to nickname all Amtrak trains through Orlando, FL "Amcrash", but now that we have Sunrail, that rail line is turning into SunCRASH!
    Seems that it's almost every other day they are running into some idiot stopped on the tracks, trying to beat the train or who knows how they sometimes end up in their predicament of getting hit by a Sunrail train.
    So now we fondly call Sunrail SunCrash because they are hitting more vehicles and pedestrians than Amtrak does in the area now!

    So, were the passengers taken off before this power-change or were they still onboard? It was hard to tell at the end when that annoying guy started asking all the questions. (Seriously, what part of "Hey, we're filming a video here, y'know, with SOUND, could you maybe keep quiet for another minute or two" did he not understand?)

      In my experience, from my experience on Amtrak trains, they probably stayed aboard, or were given the option of leaving just to smoke (but not to venture too far away.) At least that’s how it was at the station.

    They... switched the damaged engine back into the train? What the hell. I can understand Amtrak not wanting to delay its passengers any more than they had to, but...they couldn't run the train on one engine until the damaged one could be towed or a replacement unit found?

    • @scottfirman
      @scottfirman 4 роки тому +1

      Nope. The control unit, or head unit must be in operational condition to be sure everything is working. By moving it behind , it is no longer the head unit. Think about it, if 9 had its brakes system fail or its dynamic brakes fail, it might be more than just a truck getting plowed into.I am sure they have protocols to follow concerning that.

    • @ArchTeryx00
      @ArchTeryx00 4 роки тому

      @@scottfirman I wasn't thinking about keeping 9 in front, I was thinking the better option would be to *leave 9 behind* - run the train out with the remaining engine, park the damaged 9 on a siding for the NTSB, and once they got done with it, send out a road engine to tow it away to an engine shop. Having them *put it back in the train* was something I was *not* expecting.

      #9 is better *pushed* from behind ... the remaining locomotive can get up enough power to do both that *and* move the rest of the train cars. Here in the Chicago Metra system, locomotives routinely *push* entire commuter trains from behind, with a crew in the upper deck of the front passenger car to keep the locomotive operators on alert via radio, etc.

    They just could not made this maneuver more complicated... Tetris for beginners is nothing against this helpless work. The passengers should be happy to arrive sometime. Maybe if they've tried to switch the direction, this train would still not move until today.

    Why does Amtrak run cab units facing the same direction? I mean, it came in handy for this, but they cant possibly hit enough trucks to make it an operational consideration..?

    They just switched the engines because the front of #9 was damaged... the engineer couldn't see what's happening in front of him. That was too dangerous. The engine itself was still intact and running.
