O ly time I and my wife travelled by Amtrak CZ was in 2009. From SF Emeryville all the way to Chicago. Instead of 50 hrs it took 57 hrs. But the American outback, Utah desert, snowy mountains, great rivers, ( Colorado, Missouri, Mississippi) and bridges, prairies, barns, sheer beauty of America was really once in a lifetime experience for an elderly couple over sixty. One thing struck me though, there were hardly any people to be seen in the towns and stations we passed, unlike India. Cheapest way to see America is by Amtrac cross country trains.
I grew up in Altoona. This brings back memories of watching crew changes in Altoona. Many a night my mother and I would go downtown to watch the crew changes on the PRR's blue ribbon passenger trains, i.e., The General, Broadway Limited, etc. All of them stopped in Altoona for a crew change. In addition, most of them got helpers to get up the mountain. I graduate from high school in 1957. That year there were 38 passenger trains movements a day through Altoona. Today there are just two, i.e., the east bound and westbound Pennsylvanian.

Amtrak has done the traveling public wrong, they've stranded so many,to this day i still see freight locomotives ? Amtrak, and busing the passengers to their destinations. So to answer your question" no "
Trans continental...NO. SW Florida to Cincinnati...YES! It would be a mirror of the current Autotrain, whose phone number is 1-800-SKIPI95. New train phone number would be 1-800SKIPI75. They tried it years ago when less people lived here. It would work now as the snowbirds clog up I-75 at certain times of the year.
The number of coaches and autoracks is dependent on the number of seats/ autos that specific run has reserved. The objective is to keep the load weight down to what is minimally needed.
But didn't I read somewhere that the auto train is one of, if not the, key profit makers for Amtrak. It is too bad something prevented it being copied on the west coast.
Unimaginable in Europe a relay of train drivers in these conditions. In addition, the train stopped covering a level crossing. And excessive use of the whistle in the USA.
Normally it does, unless the train super late. About two years the crew change was done in Sumter, SC as the train was rerouted through Cayce and Columbia. From Devine Jct in Columbia the train went north on Eastover Sub to Sumter then turned and went to Lane, SC and on into Florence.
Yes they are. This train is kind of lightweight relative to most freight trains. If you compare the weight of the long coaches to some shorter freight cars you will see that many shorter freight cars considerably outweigh coach cars. Here's a little idea using non exacting tonnage numbers. The auto racks on the rear typically hold 15 automobiles per car between the three decks on the interior. Im not counting trucks here. 3000 pounds per auto times 15 vehicles is 45 thousand pounds per car or 22.5 tons. 22.5 tons times 22 autoracks is 495 tons. That's just a rough guess on the autoracks tonnage not including the coaches. Using the same number for the coaches, i forget how many there were, brings our total for coaches and autos to 990 tons. Now 20, 60 foot boxcars at 80 tons would be 1600 tons. In both examples The reality is that a single locomotive can pull all of those cars but, it will accelerate slower and, when you encounter variable grades and you need to accelerate a train quickly (especially to not inconvenience your passengers) you use more than one locomotive.
The train was said to be running late. The crew can only work a maximum of 12hrs and not a minute after that. This was probably the best spot to recrew before the clock ran out. FRA rules.
The engineer who died, ( hours of service) was relieved needs a way to get home so seeing as he didn't make his normal crew change point he rides in the rear engine to his normal crew change point. Amtrak rules won't allow dead heading crew to ride in the lead engine.
The relieved driver is getting back onto the engine (and will get some rest). But is this a normal practise in US Rail Road? In India the relieved driver generally stays in a 'running room' (for mandatory rest), or goes home (if he is relieved at his 'home' station).
This is extremely rare as the Amtrak Auto trains designated crew changepoint is Florence South Carolina so seeing them do a crew change in Folkston Georgia is very rare nice catch

That's awesome!
Thanks!
А до переезда нельзя было остановку делать? Оказывается дурдом бывает и не у нас
А ты посмотри когда переезд закрылся. Да-а-а, порядки. Но смена лок. бригады четкая- 4 мин. и вперед.
Amazing😍👍🤩
Thank you! Cheers!
Now how cool is that to see! Doesn't the Auto Train always has 16 passenger rail cars instead of 15?
I have NO IDEA this was my first time seeing it.
The number of coaches and autoracks is dependent on the number of seats/ autos that specific run has reserved. The objective is to keep the load weight down to what is minimally needed.
THAT was a LOT OF TRAIN 🚂 🚂 🚂🚂
Yes! Its QUITE LONG for a passenger train!!
How nice of Flo to be there to see if they want to save 15% on their train insurance...
The engineers don't wave from the trains anymore, not like they did back in 1954!
They do sometimes, just not as often......
That's a shit ton of responsibility.
I don't understand of why we don't have auto train on Coast Starlight route? As well on San Joaquin route too. Need on both routes!
it's expensive
But didn't I read somewhere that the auto train is one of, if not the, key profit makers for Amtrak. It is too bad something prevented it being copied on the west coast.
Que servicio de origen a destino hace este tren?
Magnífica locomotora y magnífico tren.
From Lorton, VA. to Sanford, FL. THANKS!
Unimaginable in Europe a relay of train drivers in these conditions. In addition, the train stopped covering a level crossing. And excessive use of the whistle in the USA.
ONLY in AMERICA!!!! ;)
The train must have close to 45-50 cars long, great video. I assumed the Lorton crew ran it all the way to the end.
The normal crew change point for Auto-Train is Florence, SC - Engines serviced with fuel and crews changed in both directions.
That would violate hours of service rules which is a federal law…
Neat video. I thought the swap point was at Florence, SC (going both ways). I wonder why the change?
The train was LATE for some reaaon.
Crew timed out on hours so they had to bring a relieve Crew
I thought the crew swap was in Florence, SC in the middle of the night. I've seen it then.
Normally it does, unless the train super late. About two years the crew change was done in Sumter, SC as the train was rerouted through Cayce and Columbia. From Devine Jct in Columbia the train went north on Eastover Sub to Sumter then turned and went to Lane, SC and on into Florence.
I dont know. This was the only time in the five days that I was there that this happened. I am GUESSING that the crew went on the law.
Always at night if on time. Been going on Auto Train (down & up) for 10+ years.
Right you are! Amtrak stopped in Florence South Carolina for fuel during the night when I rode the train.
Rode AutoTrain SB a couple years ago...super late. Had to do a 2nd crew change about an hour north of Sanford.
Nice video
Thank You!

Those two engines are pulling all of those cars?!
Sure looks like it, dont it? :P
@@BossSpringsteen69 That information is very helpful!
great video bro

Nice catch ! But the fact than they swap the crew at the railroad crossing is strange...
The train was said to be running late. The crew can only work a maximum of 12hrs and not a minute after that. This was probably the best spot to recrew before the clock ran out. FRA rules.
Enjoyed much 😃
when the swap why one of them go to back Engine?
To DEAD HEAD to the next stop.
The engineer who died, ( hours of service) was relieved needs a way to get home so seeing as he didn't make his normal crew change point he rides in the rear engine to his normal crew change point. Amtrak rules won't allow dead heading crew to ride in the lead engine.
I wonder if the second engine has a mattress or something to lay on while deadheading
The relieved driver is getting back onto the engine (and will get some rest). But is this a normal practise in US Rail Road? In India the relieved driver generally stays in a 'running room' (for mandatory rest), or goes home (if he is relieved at his 'home' station).
The engineer got onto the second engine just to hitch a ride home. He is not actually operating the train.
What educational qualification is required to become a locomotive driver in usa?...Thanks...
Didn't realize that was a crew change point.
I dont think it is. P053 was very late this day.
ANYWHERE is a crew change point when the crew reaches it's limit on hours of service.
Normally there is a crew change in Florence SC. I'm assuming there must have been some sort of major delay that prompted this change.
