  • @blindcamel6236 asked a question - how to reproduce Mr. Bill's clever sub-bass fattening technique, but using the Serum vst instead of operator.
    Here's the full Mr. Bill tutorial. It's awesome (as you'd expect). Give it a watch! • Mr. Bill Masterclass @...

      @@MikeRenouf A lot of people like to use the 'FM from A/B' in serum but it detunes at certain points, why it happens or if that's too complex what are some solutions around the detuning if it's possible to tune it back again with an external plugin or so?
      Also I just seen a different video by 'Ghosthack' that the serum FM actually uses Phase Modulation rather than Frequency Modulation but I think a few more people doing tutorials/explanations on this would be beneficial and maybe help to clarify what the differences are between the two phase modulation and frequency modulation ?

    • @MikeRenouf
      @MikeRenouf  Рік тому

      I found your question on Ghosthack's video and tried to answer it there (so that he gets some benefit on the UA-cam algorithm 👍).
      Its an interesting topic. I think its simply more efficient to code phase modulation than it is to code actual FM, and in most situations the sonic end result is almost indistinguishable.

      yes

      Good question! I just tried this by re-making the patch I showed in the video - and with both oscillators having full phase randomisation on, they stay in sync. I'm guessing the phase randomisation uses a numerical seed which is the same on both osciallators. These means if you have one dialled with a different level of randomness to the other, they'll go out of phase and the effect is ruined. If both have the same level of randomisation you retain the reinforcement of the waveshapes. Hope this helps.

    so whats the difference here from just diving into the wavetable editor and adding a 3rd harmonic to the sine?

    • @MikeRenouf
      @MikeRenouf  2 місяці тому

      Probably yours is a more elegant solution. When I made this I wasn't as familiar with the serum wavetable editor, so I used a directly equivalent process.
      I imagine there are several ways to do it.

  • @CosminPerisan

    Man, what about the phase randomization knobs? I think they need to be at 0. Great video tho🤟

    • @MikeRenouf
      @MikeRenouf  7 місяців тому +1

      You might be right on that. I think perhaps the two oscillators use the same random seed though, so they stay in phase unless you have them at differing random amounts - otherwise the oscilloscope would have shown phase cancellation. Not sure, just a guess.
      I would definitely turn off phase randomisation if I did this again though 👍

      @@MikeRenoufCan you please explain how would a "phase cancelation" situation would apear on the osciloscope?

    • @MikeRenouf
      @MikeRenouf  7 місяців тому +1

      I think it would result in the output wave being reduced in volume.

      @@MikeRenouf Thank you for the reply! I think you might be right about not being worried about the phase randomization knobs being up, but I would still turn them down to 0. :)))

      Yeah totally makes sense. They're all just tools, and if you have one which makes a task simpler, then use that. This was just provided as a quick answer to a question I saw in a comment section.

    • @colourbasscolourbassweapon2135
      @colourbasscolourbassweapon2135 2 місяці тому

      @@MikeRenouf yeah and you only need one osc to do that, you can just draw it in serum or Operator tbh that's what i do and sometime in serum i used bit of bend aka +/- to make it a bit sawtooth wave to give a bit more of a fat sounding sub bass and a bit of a Texture sound tbh

    you can literally design the waveshape in the waveshape editor by picking exactly the harmonics you want, their loudness, and their phase. This tutorial is not thought through enough, make another one with the real technique.
    edit : keeping the second oscillator free could not only save a tiny little bit of CPU but also allow you to then modulate the first one for instance, or add actually anything of your choice on it, so thats another bonus point.

    • @MikeRenouf

      Heh. There are many ways to do it. I was just asked how to achieve the sound in serum. You definitely could use the wavetables, as you say. The method I showed was intended to teach a little about FM. I could certainly do one about wavetables if you like? ✨🪐
