What tips do you have for riding in the rain? Let us know in the comments👇
Have a rain-jacket
Zwift 😅
My tip is to not have mudgards, that way everyone will let you stay in the back but don't do it too many times or no one will ride with you
avoid technical descends. wehen i plan a rout in rain i try to ride up the more technical climb and go down the easier side.if you live in a less hilly area u can maybe avoid climbs and the resulting descends alltogether. additionally lower ur tryre pressure by maybe .5 or 1 bar. Ride shorter and harder to stay warm if you dont have expensive winter/rain clothing.
I have ben riding in the rain more than my share.
- the splash from the road is not sterile water: wear eye protection. Remember it when taking a sip from the bidon (have a protective shield on the nipple)
- metal and paint are splippery, but the road itself can be like ice if it didn't rain for a while (remember Paris-Nice of this year)
- have mud guard for you and the others
- don't ride in puddle, you don't know what in it, nor where the bottom is.
- wear a good rain jacket that will make you visible (the clear plastic ones are about the same colour as the sprays from motor vehicles, not a good choice)
- don't get cold
- enjoy the ride. I won't kill you and the next time you are having adverse condition you can remember that one you rode through.
I live in Ireland, I don't know what it's like to cycle in the dry 😂
We feel your pain
I live in northern NY. Our winter is like 6 months. So theres usually snow to deal with.
I live in SoCal's, Inland Empire area, we don't get much rain at all thru out the year, I wish we could borrow a few months of rain from your country.
@@patrickhowell2502 Yeah, I was like winter means rain? Winter means 12" of snow and corners with several feet in the corner. What is this wet winter business?
@@kimberlystewart8980 actually, in the uk there's less rain in the winter than in the summer. so i don't really know what they're referring to.
Better preparedness: Lights front and back, and wear brighter coloured clothing! Bad weather means darker conditions and decreased visibility especially in rain, so put every variable in your corner.
Absolutely. And I can't understand that some big brands of cycling clothing offer black rain jackets. Visibility is everything in bad weather conditions!
One-hundred percent agreed. Grab a good set of lights, not one of those dinky 20-dollar sets; just picked up a 750-lumen headlight and 130-lumen tail-light the other day in preparing for my Canadian autumn and winter riding commutes.
@@xtra9996 Agreed!! The larger brands need much more chartreuse yellow, green, and orange options for jackets; even just a red or light blue would be more than ideal over the largely dark colours offered.
@Paul Wieringa Ahahahaha seriously though eh. Especially with all the pedestrians stepping out from in-between parked vehicles to jaywalk when it's dark out; who can see them when they're wearing a black jacket and black pants/leggings!?!?
@Paul Wieringa and so are other colours! A few years ago I bought a red rainjacket and pretty soon found out it made me almost invisible, too. Bummer.
1. Full-coverage fenders with mudflaps to keep as much of the rain from flying off the ground and on to you/your shoes/your bike.
2. Bright lights fore and aft, to see where you're going and to help others see you. Also, retroreflective tape, front and rear.
3. Never ride through puddles. It may be skin deep, or it may be a wheel-swallowing, ride-ending pothole. Don't take chances on riding through them. How do you see them? See # 2.
4. Anti-slip tape on the brake levers and possibly on the grips, to keep your fingers from slipping off at an inopportune moment. Look for 3M 50-mm-wide anti-slip tape, meant for bathtubs/showers.
Another thing to avoid on the road in the wet is leaves. Especially this time of year.
And painted lines on the road...
I commute 24/7 to an emergency services job all year ‘round ... it’s just about being prepared with kit options and I store options at home and at work so I’m not carrying a massive bag every day to cater for all weathers.
I use a gravel bike as my commuter so I have wide, 38mm tyres with good treads for even the worst weathers and it worked brilliantly for me last winter, so will be going again this year and have invested in some baselayers for extra kit options.
38? I use 51mm in the wet. Go Thunder Burt's
Daytime running lights. In the rain visibility is reduced, cyclist are even harder to be seen by other road users. Be seen have your flashers on front and rear 24/7
If I’ve had my pina colada, then I don’t mind getting caught in the rain...
i bet you don't like yoga...
@@smh95826 _"Do you have half a brain?"_ No, I don't. But I do like making love at midnight,
Don't drink and ride in the drink
Cheesiest tune ever😆
Another tip: drop the tire pressure a bit for extra grip on the road. Around 80 psi in clinchers worked best for me :)
Would this be the same for tubeless?
Muhammad Laher tubeless you can drop even lower
But then you increase the risk of a snake-bite puncture on one of those hidden-in-the-puddle potholes or missing manhole covers mentioned earlier.
@@manfredmuench2657 Depends if you have tubes or not. I run my tyres (tubed/clincher) at 60 front 65 rear
"Are you one of those fair weather cyclist ?" Yes, yes I am. Next video please.
I just cycled through the rain an hour ago, perfect time for this video!
I'm 64yrs old retired and I wear glasses. I used to work in the rain or snow or heat or whatever, so since becoming a pensioner I do not ride in the rain unless I get caught in it, utterwise I am a fair weather rider.
When doing day trips (~10 hours on the road) I prefer to avoid rainy days, too. No matter what kind of high tech gear in about 1 hour you get wet. Not soaking wet, but wet anyway, also from sweating. And if it rains in the morning on a colder day then you stay wet all day long. And when it rains you ride somewhat slower. So you might end up riding in the night at the end of the day. And then in the dark you ride slower too, even if it's dry. And then, from time to time you need to open up your saddle bags - that's when the water gets in even if they are rubber coated and really 100% water proof. And then, you can't use your Smartphone with GPS navigation properly if you wear gloves, or if there are drops of water on the screen - that's how water gets into your gloves. And you can't charge the Smartphone if the connectors get wet. And everything takes longer and, and, and... and it's just not fun :-(
Love Manon and Hank together... bounce off each other really well
lol, really? Out of all the ways to say they get along well for a video...
@@AndreGomes1987 sorry I don't understand what you mean?
I had all sorts of rain gear but still didn't like riding in the rain. Finally got a cycling cap with a bill and it totally changed the experience for me. Keeps the rain out of my eyes which makes me much more comfortable (and I can see better since I don't have to squint)
I slipped off my bike 20 miles into a very wet 100 miler. Tyres are essential! Didnt knock my confidence mind :)
I am living in Northern Ireland, and this seems pretty legit to me. thanks gcn!
I had to learn some of this the hard way this year. First year into road cycling finally hit some Fall and Autumn weather and I banked a sharp turn hit some leafs and mud and my bike kicked out and I wipeout hard!
Great timing, I've got my first sportive this weekend and the weather forecast doesn't look dry at all 😬 will try and put some of these tips into action
Thanks for the video!
Great video. I cycle to work, so there's no other option but to go out in all weathers (with the exception of snow) so that's a tip if you really want to keep cycling through winter. Hands are the tough bit, I wear 2 pairs of gloves!! I wear a cut up ring of t-shirt wrapped round my neck and head - underneath the helmet (I prefer it to the hats you can buy). I do find snow the worst, don't mind rain.
I love watching videos of thunderstorms and then I listen to music I like like delta parole or metallica! Nothing better and more relaxing like that!
Good tips. I used to commute by bike and that meant rain or shine, I had to ride. I remember going down once because I didn't corner correctly. The nice thing about falling in the wet is there's a LOT less road rash from the slide.
I live in Saudi Arabia , i don't need this video I 😂
Desert !
How to ride in the desert is on the list...
@@gcn yeah i see it of course 👌
you need video to save you from the sand on the road

I rode the new cycle track in the dessert in Dubai last again July... It was 52 degrees... for some reason.. I was only one there! Got to admit... the closest I've came to dying on a bike!!

Great tips, and a nice challenge to do some wet weather riding!
Really like Manon's candid manner when presenting! ☕
Manon and Hank turning into a great double-act.
Living in Thailand, currently in the rainy season, can go one of two ways. You get a nice refreshing downpour and dry quickly or get caught in a monsoon.
Been waiting for this one
Quite appropriate for the weather this week!
“I’m scared of cows” walks up to the cows “hello “
Doug Wiggin there is a fence in between.
Manon does love to live dangerously.
Cows are one of the friendliest animals.
This monday I was cycling for 4 hours in the rain and I couldn’t get enough power out of my fingers to change gears lol
Grab the whole leaver and do it that way lol
Metallus should’ve done that indeed hahah
cheap snowboard gloves, like DaKine or similar
Been there. I use weaker hand to shift it half way and other hand to assist with full shift.
Yes I've definitely been there :(
Once a time many years ago, I bought some fantastic tires with yellow side walls that matched my banana yellow paint job. They were narrow and slick, absolutely no grip at all, they looked fantastic and I didn't pay that much attention to the fact they weren't wet weather tires. I always had my tireds at 6 bar / 90psi.
So I was flying down this hill towards a massive roundabout at about 35mph with the rain hammering it down so hard it was bouncing back up.
Nothing was coming at the roundabout so instead of slowing down I just leaned into the turn and end up with the bike sliding way from me.
Maybe I should have paid more attention to my tire choice, on the other hand the yellow side walls really looked amazing with my banana yellow frame.
Slipped... like a banana peel
Its cool to see the guys riding in Pembrokeshire. Iv been down those roads hundreds of times and i was disappointed that I wasn’t cycling on the day you were filming. Come back to fresh west on a sunny day 😊
I use SKS raceblade pro XL (for 28mm tire) and currently have continental 4 season tires on my bike. Tire works well for NZ terrible roads. The raceblade is great because once adjusted to your bike frame they just clip on and off with ease. I've had them two years now and got them to stop wet road gravel being flicked up on drive train and top off saddle. I'm happy with them 👍
My least favourite thing about wet weather cycling is all the grit that gets into the drivetrain and the brakes.
Fenders make a big difference in controlling that.
What about all the grit that one gets in the face, especially the eyes and teeth and on the nozzle of the water bottle? And then the stench of the overshoes in the evenings, he?
@@rostislavsvoboda7013 ^ man up
@@blubaughmr A fender is a big balloony thing [or old tyre] hung on the side of boats to stop quay damage. How do those control road spray? Better off using a mudguard.
@@manfredmuench2657
Those are also called fenders, but I have no idea what a quay is.
Mudguards are those rubber flap things on the back of trucks. Next thing I know, you're going to tell me a truck is a "lorry!"

Try rainX
Chris Sr +1 for rainX
How do you use it???
Non RX do you mean? I canʻt imagine it would play well with coated lenses.
Try and wear clear lenses in the rain or if you can't afford a pair - safety specs as getting road water in your eyes can get infected!
better even to buy all gloves and sunglasses at the hardware store instead of bike shops. Save loads of money and get essentially the same product stamped out of the same Chinese factory, minus the logo.
I find I need a cap or peak to keep the rain off these

It was my feeble attempt at humour.
I now feel quite crushed.
Caution: Leaves on the road ! ... during the fall season. Thanks for your great videos. I agree with you about the mud guard and coffee stop. You forgot to mention about the mud sprayed over you nice jacket, before you put your rain jacket ! Ciao from Montréal !
Nice to see you're in fresh west, in the shire 💪
I used my giro aero helmet ,was great no rain in the face!
Just bought a set of SKS raceblades, I have had 2 really wet rides with them on and they were my best purchase for those rides. Clean drivetrain, bum and back, definitely need the overshoes next.
"laughs in malaysian common heavy tropical rains"
Much crazier than our rain for sure!
“Join laughs with Indonesian monsoon rains”
Here's another Malaysian here to agree with you 😂
laugh whilst wearing jersey and rain started pouring so suddnly
Just biked in heavy rain the other day, so some additional tips:
- Lol, no need for a rain jacket if you're in the tropics like me. I wasn't freezing, and actually quite comfy.
- I would relube just before riding, and/or even consider bringing a tiny bottle of lube. My chain was squeaking an hour in and caused some chain suck.
Regularly run into rain on rides. Quite refreshing!
Massive thumbs up for Manon/GCN
Best purchase ever...winter boots. I’ve got northwave gore tex. warm and dry in all weather.
Yes! No matter the weather. 🤙🏼
Good show!

Thanks. Yes riding in the Rain is fun for a change of pace. I like wearing Gore Tex sock if it going to Rain all Day. If you are riding in cold Rain I use Mom’s plastic Hair Net over the Helmet to keep Brain from freezing. Our Group did a 100miles in the Rain without no Flats an did it in a Great Time. Thanks
Beautiful people... and inspiration video.. 😍👌
heheheheh perfect video for me, I expect to ride in the wet tomorrow. I live in Galicia, it's going to rain tomorrow and all the next week it seems. Loved the ending with Manon and Hank communicating with the cows. This video needs an update I think
Sounds like solid tips for riding in the UK all year round especially in Pembrokeshire!! *I thought I recognised some of those roads :D
I live in Vancouver. What is this 'dry' that you speak of?
Ótimas dicas. Abraço
Ah nice a ride in the rain, in the UK also known as, a ride.
Hahaha
Putting on that rain jacket was such a flex Hank
Looks like Fresh Water West Beach in Pembrokeshire, Wales. Plenty of opportunity to practice cycling in the rain here.
Here in belgium the cycling lanes if there are any, are like ice. It's fun to drift on them with a city bike tho
While riding in the wet and it’s still raining, cycling cap is a must. It really helps stop the water from dripping into your eyes. Yes, even when you’re wearing those oversized cycling sunglasses, water can still drips to your eyes. It happened to me and I was forced to stop riding because I just couldn’t see anything.
If you put a little vaseline on your eyebrows it also helps
What a time for this video. Just got drenched while cycling 10mins ago.
Cool. Wish I would have seen this earlier. Got caught out in a thunderstorm and hail 😑
Great video! Any suggestion for bike care after riding in wet conditions? Apart from cleaning chain of course
Cleaning, drying and lubing parts asap.
Would you suggest a gravel or a road bike for a rainy day?
How much difference does grip on tyres have, wet ot dry? Generally low speed travel doesn't tyre compound have more impact than grip on the tyre?
What about after the ride? Do you need to wipe down the bike / chain / etc? I don't ride in the rain, because I'm worried about it ruining the different parts -- mostly the chain, gears, and brakes. One time my brakes got real squeaky, not sure if it was due to the water or something else.
My first roadie experience was on rented Roubaix, I had it for 7 days and six of them were rainy. Still I rode the hell out of it and felt like a terminator. Hold the rule #9 ! :)
Since I'm a pluviophile, I like to ride in overcast weather. ☁☁☁
To avoid a heavy rain, I always check the precipitation first, but I never say *NO* to a drizzle 🌧😍🌧😍🌧
You just had to use that instead of just saying you enjoy the sound of water.
rain riding is my favorite rides... isolated, adventurous, fun.
Especially when the night is coming in too... I had to climb up to 600m to get home in the dark and rain here in taipei recently... Was tough but good fun
Living in Arizona, we don’t have many rainy days. We therefore take advantage of them when we can. Nothing better than rising on a rainy day. 🌧️
My first cornering in the wet didn't end well. Much better at it now.

Very informative and helpful video, my concern with wet weather cycling is what to do with my bike post ride. Do I rinse it down and dry it off before putting away in the shed or arriving at work or can it stay wet for a period before needing a wash. I'd love to know. Thank you.
Would make sense to give it a quick hose down. Rainwater on the road surface will be contaminated with all sorts of bike unfriendly stuff like grit salts oils etc
It depends on the rain. I don't ride if it is already raining, but I will go if it is drying or it could start to rain. When it rains in Orange County, California it is always a cold rain. If I was in Orange County, Florida, I'd probably have no problem riding in the rain most of the year.
My Tip, Swift! 🤗😋👌
I'm happy they started the video with the importance of tires, not brakes. It's so easy to slip a corner due to worn tires, too much speed, too much torque, etc.
Just about to retire to Brazil where very sensibly they don’t go out cycling in the rain ! Although that still leaves about 11 months a year to ride in the sunshine in a bad year ! 👍
My tip is simple. Don't forget the roads are wet when the rain has recently stopped. I did this once when I had a hangover while riding to work. I had a total brain fart after bombing a short descent and throwing my bike into a 90 degree corner with the road still quite damp. I shed lots of skin, ruined clothes, patched myself up rather than getting medical care, and after going to dr a week later discovering I had picked up 2 kinds of very very nasty bacteria which required 2 rounds of heavy antibiotics to get rid of. So yeah, dont have brain farts while riding in the wet.
Hank is a not so sneakily amazing bike handler
True
I can barely take both hands off for more than a second. I'm in awe.
Videos that end to soon! I wanted to see Manon make friends with the cows~
I tend to use single speed bike or my cross bike when autumn days come in.
I know this is an old vid, but does anyone have a tip on specifically preventing punctures in the rain? I ride 32mm tires with clincher non-latex inner tubes, and it seems every single time I ride in the rain I get a flat. Any tips?
Do get out in winter but more so go on the turbo and rollers try mix it up
I love when it rains cause the smell of the dirt and mud around my cycle. the dirt makes my cycle look so cool and different cycle cover with dirt looks bad ass and the fun when you start to slip or skkid. The trail full of fun can't companie about any thing it too fun . Thank-you god for giving me such a wonderful experience with my cycle do you like to ride in mude in rain season let me know guys.(we all are family to gather)
Really big fan of your videos ... just one suggestion/wish/imploration : please please please ... when you switch to your "riding scenes" please dont quadruple the volume ... everytime the kids wake up, the dog gets scared and the tree in front of the house drops more leaves ... no need for late night disco-bursts. If you do that, I will even ride in the rain ... I promise.
This two looks good together
Living in The New Forest my tip is .. watch out for the cattle grids when wet
I need to heed this advice as it's getting expensive
What happened? Big crash?
@@wyattchoia2473 .. twice now I've crashed in the winter because of the cattle grids
Broken bike and damaged ego both times 🤪
@@leighharwood9415 just curious how does the crash happen is it not slowing down in time or turning the wheel while crossing? I was actually in the new forest with my bike last week. It was dry and sunny but I was fairly cautious about crossing. Slow steady speed and made sure I was heading dead straight over it. Would that be sufficient or even suggesting avoiding them completely?
@@suburbia2050
I ride over them most days without any issues but if it is raining or icy and you either
Cross the grids at an angle or put more pressure on the pedals as you pass over the bike slips out from under you
Hope that answers the question 👍
Hi GCN! I recently got my first bike with disc brakes, took it out today on a ride, as it had just stopped raining the roads were very wet. After some time I hear weird loud squeaking noises coming from the rear wheel. I started thinking the noise is caused by the chain lube being washed away. Altough I think I put wet lube on, I did not want to risk damaging the chain & drive train and turn back home. When walking with the bike next to me as I enter the garage the noise is still there altough the chain is not tunring around. Can this noise come from the disc brake? The discs are a bit dirty and sandy from the spray... What should I do to continue riding through fall without damaging my bike?
Yes disc brakes get noisy when they are wet. It's normal. If they stay noisy after they have dried completely it just means they got contamination from oil on the road. Just wipe them round the rim on both sides with disc brake cleaner or isopropyl alcohol cleaner.
Is it normal for Disk brake squeaking sound when wet!?
