@nigel_bd good man ;)
When I lived in the PNW, I used neoprene paddling gloves for cycling all winter long instead of cycling gloves. They're excellent when it rains, but cold if it's dry. And they're (relatively) cheap at MEC or REI
I might add many many wool socks. Being from Hawai'i where you dry immediately after being rained on while riding I had NO idea that fungal/bacterial issues were so prevalent in the Pacific NorthWest. I discovered changing your socks twice a day is super important, like seriously important. I ended up losing two toe nails from riding 28 miles a day to and from work and having my feet constantly wet. It was an experience I highly don't recommend.
Thanks for your insights
Hey ballers, as a rider in the same city with more of a sausage shaped body, the waterproof gear just gets soaked from my greasy sausage body sweat. I wear a vest and a wool long sleeve baselayer. I use the wool Shower's Pass Crosspoint gloves and while they are mostly waterproof, they are wool, so they do great on longer rides. I have waterproof shoes because I bike commute and end up having to walk around a bit before I can shower and I tear up the shoe covers. The pro tip for winter cycling is to buy electric shoe dryers - I have one at work and home so if the shoes get a little wet, I can get the shoes dry super fast.
Last thing - since it is winter and wet, do two sets of lights on the front and back. Redundancy is great and I think it helps drivers who aren't texting know it is a cyclist.
I bought a pair of waterproof insulated gardening gloves for $8 last winter. Super grippy, decent padding, works on touch screens and the long cuff easily tucks into your jacket. Sure, it's not stylish but style kinda goes out the proverbial window when it's pissing sleet and your 80km from your doorstep. Now where TF are my fenders.
One of my essentials are two dogpoop-bags. Those thin and ultralight bags, I do not know if they are available somewhere beyond Europe? For those who do not know them: In some notorious places where the dogs leave something behind, there are boxes with free poop-bags (especially here in Germany) in which the Dogowners should put the dog-poop, after the dog pooped. :-) Well, back to the stroy: In the time when the season shifts from lovely to medium lovely, the time when its usually to warm for gloves, these dogpoop-bags can safe you if it starts to rain suddenly, especially while descending and the temperature drops. They weigh almost nothing and do not use space. The rest of your mentioned Items: Totally agree except the fenders, because they are not available here, so I use SKS.
Dustin, superb advice as usual with a dusting of whimsicality! I’m now officially a certified gravel gamboller due to your voyages of discovery! 2021 Specialized Diverge Expert arrived today... and the ride, by the numbers...
Love the NorthWest, still grateful of living in Costa Rica. When it rains, it’s just to refresh from the warm temperatures.
Pepper recommended this to me: if you're in a pinch, dishwashing gloves work excellent as wet-weather gloves. Comes in safety yellow.
Plus the long cuffs!
Old school 😁
Just approach winter cycling in the PNW as a water sport.
🤣😭😂
Thanks Dustin. Personally I highly recommend 1)waterproof socks (huge game changer) and 2)actual waterproof gloves like Glacier Gloves (which are about $25- they're not real warm BUT they're waterproof and you can layer another pair of gloves or liners underneath)
I recommend grabbing as many free newspapers as you can to stuff into ur cycling shoes at night so they dry by morning.
Hal knows his shi...tuff.
LMAO!!
Check out waterproof socks. I haven’t used my over-shoe booties thingies all year. Love the socks: warm and dry feet and at least with my shoes no problem switching outa the waterproof socks for wool after the rain.
Downhill ski gloves also work great on cold wet days
Defo 👍
First time watch 6:21 minutes of adson on YT😉 but was best commercial I see😂
Hello Dustin from the past, come to 2023, it's awesome
That poor dude just stuck in som crappy editing and bad pacing 🤣🤦🏻♂️
best gloves for wet weather are neoprene gloves. insulate just like overshoes, keeping the water in and keeping you warm. Although theyre not very durable
So gore wear and trainers. Cool.
The 650 Beasts are so damn good!
Dust face when the engine started in the middle of the recording ...😂😂😂
I would concur with wool socks. Keep your feet warm and wool doesn't hold the water all day like cotton. Same reason I like a woolly jumper as my top layer.
Can you make a Budget one, bc I don't got 350 bucks to spend on a rain jacket
Rain jackets are expensive. They just are and you can't find anything that actually does the job that's "cheap". I've tried and failed too many times and now I've got a insulated Gore shakedry jacket that gives the finger to the cold and the rain. A lot of money but it'll stay with me for years.
As a fellow PNW year-round rider, multiple gloves FTW! Nobody has cracked the code on waterproof, warm and breathable. Also, I resisted "winter shoes" for a decade (thinking they were a luxury purchase) but they have been a total game changer. Also, my waterproof frame bag is clutch (for spare gloves, socks, etc). #resistzwift
Good points all around! Extra points for water proof frame bag...nothing worse then soggle bag LOL
Is there a reason they wont put a hoodie on shakedry jackets? like a tight hoodie that fits under the helmet? Don't the water filter through the collar? I really want to get one of those but that is what makes me doubt it.
MTB rides in the forest are greats
Rule 5 and 9 (from Keepers of the Cog)
Fantastic 👌 😂😂😂😂 🏴😎
Have Competitive Cyclist talked to you about their EU site Alpine Trek? Would be great to get to use your code outside the US
This is a great idea! Im asking them now!
#6 for the win
Truth!
Somebody should do a tropical version of this.
Good idea!!
What fender flaps do you use ?
I made them out of ass savers
Do you rock glasses on rain rides?
yes I always wear glasses
too much Gore for me! OK, shakedry is great, but the other stuff is just average. eVent is much more breathable than Paclite (eVent Pants from Vaude). But I use a Berghaus Paclite pant because of the 3/4 zipper (nothing sucks more if you have to put off your shoes on a ride when it begins to rain) and a 3/4 eVent rainpant by Vaude.
Overshoes are a bummer! The water comes trough and the shoes start to smell so wintershoes with GTX or similar are a must have!
Gloves are a big problem! I prefer neoprene gloves for the same reason you use the overshoes.
What you forgot: a cycling cap with a little visor!
Thanks for your feed back
Don't really like neoprene shoe cover... I feel they make you sweat more and sweating attracts humidity on your feet and this means more cold. I do prefer winter shoes (maybe with gore-tex) or normal shoes with windstopper shoe-cover and in case you can add thermal patches above your socks. These patches are thin and inexpensive
Your PNW bicycle primer.
It is a Sail.
Everything is on Sail ;)
Doctor Klein. Need some advice concerning female cyclist. How do I snare one into my twin cycloide universe? Btw I'm a sub contemplating being a player.
🤣😂😭
Got an inside track in sub-$300 trainers? I already hate myself for asking.
Im glad you asked. You have 2 options 1: A resistance trainers like this one: bit.ly/2TlIesY The other options in rollers which pack away easily plus they don't wear out your tire: bit.ly/2TjzTGg but at no resistance. Hope this helps!
How do you keep your ears warm?
I like winter cycling caps also
Dear Competitive Cyclist. Do you carry Rain Proof Over Shorts?
🙅♂️
fender placement? lets talk about it
what about your head?
If you don't ride in the rain you can't race in the rain end of, quote by The man ,King Kelly.
F*^ck gloves. Bar mitts. Too warm for PacNW a lot of the time, but too warm > cold and wet.
I have been meaning to try those!

OMG 🤦🏻♂️
I thought there are 6 items for wet weather.

Virtually impossible to keep your feet dry?
I call BS; I use the ShowersPass Club shoe covers for my rainy commutes, and my feet are dry as a bone when I get to work
A umbrella is not a essential in the rain while bike ride.
what about the lab coat?
