What Does It Take to Fit 33's and a 1" spacer with no rubbing on a 2022+ Nissan Frontier?

- A question I see a ton on Facebook groups and forums is "what needs to be modified to run 33's on the new 3rd gen Nissan Frontier. In this video, I'm going to show you what I had to modify to fit 285/70R17's on my 2023 Frontier with a 1" wheel spacer.
I've heard from other folks with 33's and no wheel spacer (and stock wheels) that you can fit this tire size with just removing the front mud flaps and no modification, but the spacer definitely makes a huge difference in where the tire contacts the truck so hopefully this is helpful!
As mentioned in the video, here are some helpful links.

Like your video some great information there your camera is a little out of focus had to freeze frame to see exactly what you were talking about the tires look great too your truck looks really awesome 😎 oh yes and I fast forward through the introduction music 😁
Yeah, sorry about that. The autofocus was apparently going wild and I didn't realize it until after, :(.
I just purchased these in a 285/70r17 for my 4Runner.
They're great tires.
@@AllThingsOverlanding good! I’m glad!
Putting 33s on mine soon, so this was helpful. I got rid of my spacers and went with aftermarket KMC Mesa wheels which have an 18mm offset and pushes the wheels out nicely.
Nice! Glad it was helpful.
I got dx4 0mm offset on 285 on a 2.5in leveling kit, it was rubbing super bad, went down to 275 and was still rubbing quite a bit, had to do a bit of trimming.
i have the same tires, same size, i have the ADO titan swap kit. i still had to melt mod the rear part of the front fender. no rubbing at all never cut any out tho. i did trim a tiny bit of the last part of the fend skirt. i do have spacers on the rear wheels to push them out another inch to get closer to the front span. my lift is aprox 3.5 inch all around. I do also have the CBI front bumper as well.
Love the CBI front bumper. Nice set up!
Looks great. I did 275/70/17
This is the size I would go with.
Yep that's what I'm doing also. Already did my 2 inch ADO lift and AAL and a 1inch spacer. I don't off-road much except for archery deer kill recovery and chopping firewood and occasionally snow covered roads. Looking at the 275/70/17 firestone destinations XT. Should give me another half inch height and almost another half in width plus remain a good road tire and fairly quiet. What tire you thinking about going with?
Thanks!
Good job Jason! Those 33 must be small, I don’t know. I had to cut WAY more with the same size tires and 0 offset wheels. I mean way more. My truck also sits a good inch higher then yours.
Interesting. These trucks don't really take bigger tires very easily, haha.
These 285’s are the biggest 285 on the market. They measure 32.99” when most are 32.6-32.7
I plan on getting ADO’s Fox extended travel kit, will put me up to about 3” of lift front and rear. Will that maybe help reduce the cutting or even eliminate having to cut that metal piece? No serious wheeling yet, but wouldnt mind the 33’s with a 1” spacer
That might help a little bit. I'm basically rubbing on the bottom few inches so if your tires hit lower then you might be able to avoid some of the modification.
After you installed the 1 inch spacers how much of the OEM stud stuck out? did you have to trim the stud to fit the wheels?
Nope, no trimming. Just put the nuts that came with the spacer on the stock studs and then put the wheel on the spacer and tightened everything down.
When you had your stock tires(dynapro at2) , did you ever air down on trails? If you did how low you were comfortable airing down to? Will be doing section 2 of the wabdr and was wondering if I should airdown with my nissan frontier pro4x 2024 stock tires. Any advice will be appreciate it.
I had them on when I did the Wyoming BDR last July and I think I aired them down to 15 with no problems.
@@AllThingsOverlanding thank you very much for your reply! This information helps alot.
Hey, good stuff, next time can you make sure the camera is focused on the correct depth? It is frustrating as a viewer when people are trying to show detail and the focus is on the wrong subject. Thanks!
Yeah, I'll have a word with the camera's autofocus.
New subscriber here, I just bought a Pro-4X a couple of weeks ago. I was wondering how much difference if any, was noticed on the overall ride quality when you lifted and installed 33’s? I’ve been super impressed at how quiet the cabin is in these so I’m most likely keeping it stock for a while but just for reference in the future. Thanks and keep up the great work! 👍🏼
The truck feels stiffer with the ado rckilla lift but not bad and I’m running skinny 33s which doesn’t require any cutting or spacers only having to remove the front mud flap and you get no rubbing.
I didn't notice much if any difference in ride quality (but I've also got a fair amount of weight in the back that tends to soften a lot of the bumps). The RT Kendas are surprisingly quiet on the road, but definitely a little louder than stock. The biggest change came with the addition of the tires and the change in gas mileage. I probably lost 2-3 MPG with the addition of the bigger tires.
@@Lilchamps805 the skinny 33 are the 255/80r17?
@@jcperez953 correct
You do have the rc killa kit on there to right?
Yep.
I wonder if you can fit a 35s on these truck like a Colorado
It’s possible with a Titan swap but it takes a decent amount of work/modification.
@@AllThingsOverlanding oh thank you sir another question the titan swap is for the current Generation or before 2021 so I can have a reference for the shocks I really want to put Fox shocks or even a king shocks
@@Merkicko There are some titan swapped 3rd gens already. My understanding is that it's basically the same as the 2nd gen, with the exception of the tie rods which are a different length and different thread pattern, but All Dogs Offroad offers them for a pretty reasonable price: www.alldogsoffroad.com/ado-titanswap-tie-rod-extensions-for-third-gen-nissan-frontier
Much change in fuel economy after installing 33s?
Definitely the biggest drop of all the mods. Probably lost about 2-3 MPG with the 33's. I also have about 1000 pounds of weight worth of gear in the back, but I had that when I went to WY last year and with stock tires, I still averaged 19-20 MPG. Now I'm getting about 16 or 17.
Question is 285/65 or 70/ fits with no issue even without lift on the factory pro4x rms ?
That's what I've heard. 285/70R17's fit with no lift and no modification, but that seems tight to me.
yes they fit, however the front splash guards have to be removed. Also keep in mind not all tires in 285 70 17 are same diameter, some brands are a little larger or a little under size. Also 285 70 17 installed without a lift or level kit look kinda odd.
@@PRO4XKEV yeah, good points!
How many miles on your truck now?
Over 17k now
Might be a dumb question but 2in spacer give you any more clearance
I think you're thinking of spacers for a lift. I'm talking about a 1" wheel spacer which pushes the wheels out further from the hubs. That changes the angle at which the tires contact the fender liners and mud flaps. Without the spacers, I've heard that it doesn't contact.
@AllThingsOverlanding that makes sence lol what if you put 2in spacers for a lift does that actually give you any.more clearance?
@@chrissanderson3648 it changes where the tires contact the fender liner, but not enough to prevent it from rubbing.
A couple layers of ductape might fix the problem where you're catching rocks! A cheap fix at least worth a try?!?
Not a terrible idea. I just power wash it out good when I get home from a trip and don’t worry about it much.
@@AllThingsOverlanding keep up the good work, enjoying the content!
@@michaelharris8228 Appreciate it!
@@michaelharris8228 Thanks man!
Yeah but the cheapest Chinese Kenda tires. Whats the point
Technically, Kenda tires are produced in Taiwan and they have been since 1962. These are great tires for a fair price that people sleep on. There are a lot of no name brands that put no R&D into their tire designs, but Kenda isn't one of them. They've got a long offroad racing pedigree as well.
Give the people what they want, how to fit 40s
Barely got 35’s on my old truck with a Titan swap and a 4” lift. 😂
@@AllThingsOverlanding 😆
Awesome truck but buying a new truck and having to customize just to have standard off road capabilities, i fken hate nissan so much
Yeah but the trade off is that your truck will live 4x longer the average US vehicle. It’s a worthwhile trade-off haha
I fit skinny 33s on mines only thing I had to modify was remove the front mud flaps 255/80r17 wild peak at4, there’s no rubbing and I’ve even tested it off road and still no rubbing.
You don't need to modify these at all. I have a 2015 pro4x that's stock except for KO2s and sliders and get everywhere I want to go. No lift. No nothing. It's a great 4x4
Until recently, almost all trucks required modification to really shine offroad. You don't really see many Tacomas, Rangers, or other trucks that aren't modified. Now you can get a Trailhunter trim Tacoma or a Ranger Raptor, but those trucks cost $65K plus, so not sure why it's such a big deal to spend maybe $2-5K to modify a mid to low $40K truck to be more capable offroad.
@@Lilchamps805can you post a video of the skinny’s on your channel? I’m wanting to do the same thing and would love to see it before I pull the trigger. Did you lift yours? Did you take a hit on gas mileage?
See that's the big difference on a Nissan compared to the new 2024 Tacoma don't have to do NO! Cutting on a 2024 Tacoma to fit big wheels and tires on it and your getting way more tuck with the all new 2024 Tacoma and way more horsepower and torque than the V6 junkssan
Lol, pretty bold statements guy. Your 4 banger 4 cylinder prob wont make it to 75k miles before it starts to fade and wear and good luck with your transmission too as I seen those are mostly probmatic too, even the manuals are breaking. They look great, not gonna lie but all the cheap plastic and crappy quality control that is starting to pop up all over on the forums and UA-cam, plus the top dollar asking price. Good luck.
Haha, yeah, I’ll take my NA V6 to keep for the next 10 plus years with less worry about issues with an FI 4 cylinder. Also, if you’re paying $8-15k (or more) for a comparable new Tacoma then you better not have to cut anything or modify anything.
Hahaha what a joke enjoy your overpriced taco that will run for a 100k miles if your transmission and diff don't explode before that. I'll take a little trimming any day over that piece of junk.😂😂😂😂
