The Simpsons making fun of Unitarians

  • The writers have made quite a few jokes ribbing Unitarians. Obviously, the jokes here are meant to be ironic, and a criticism of the squabbling among different sects of Christianity. (I even read somewhere that Matt Groening might be Unitarian Universalist.)
    Episodes features:
    S6E7 - Bart's Girlfriend
    S11E14 - Alone Again, Natura-Diddily
    S11E15 - Missionary: Impossible
    S12E19 - I'm Goin' to Praiseland
S16E21 - The Father, the Son and the Holy Guest Star
Anything I missed in my compilation? Let me know below.

Unitarian Universalists are not Christians anymore, they’ve abandoned the idea of identifying as a Christian and many Christian teachings. • @Intranetusa
      @Intranetusa Рік тому +80

@Hoppeankiek, Unitarian is a form of non-Trinitarian Christianity because they still believe Jesus is the savior and a divine prophet of God, just not a part of God himself. What you read about God being a trinity with Jesus being a part of God is just the viewpoint approved by the Romans during the Council of Nicea. Did you know that the early Christians had vastly different beliefs in the nature of Jesus, and some gnostic gospels even say Jesus wasn't even divine either and was just a man?

    • @Kenfren
      @Kenfren Рік тому +23

@@Intranetusa oh ffs. Yes, the gnostics disagreed, and the gnostics were both heretics, and a minority. Very few of their scriptures survived, but what we do have (like the gospel of Thomas) are obvious forgeries.
The council of Nicea was left alone by Constantine, and had to do with Arius, and his heresy, a much more serious and wide spread heresy. He also just made shit up, and ignored the teachings of the apostles, as written in the gospels. Which are written shortly after the time of Jesus, and reliable.
It is absolutely necessary to believe in the Trinity, and Jesus was absolutely God

    • @Intranetusa
      @Intranetusa Рік тому +1

@Hoppeankirk - Lol, Gnostics are viewed as heretics because the dominant authority in charge didn't like their version of Christianity. Other Christians within the Roman Empire got the government to ban their documents and teachings. By the 4th century, Christian bishops decreed that possessing non-mainstream Christian books was heresy and a criminal offense and went on book burning sprees of Christian writings that they didn't like.
During the early formation of Christianity, there were many DOZENS UPON DOZENS of different Christian gospels, and the Romans at the Council of Nicea decided to pick four (4) of them (heavily based on political power/influence), and declare they were the only canonical gospels.
You think belief in Trinity and Jesus being a part of a Trinity God is required to be a Christian because your definition of Christianity was defined for you by the Romans and the early Christians who worked with Roman authorities to ban other Christian beliefs and burn their books. Many of the early Christian people and gospels would disagree with you.
Also, Unitarians aren't the same as the Gnostics anyways.

Some of it, sure. But like Seth McFarlane of Family Guy and American Dad fame, Groening likes to be very self-deprecating, takes shots at his upbringing, beliefs, ideals, political parties, organized religion via through episodes and Simpsons/Futurama characters. He learned a lot of this ability to be able to make fun of himself by being a huge fan of Frank Zappa, a well-known rock legend, who can satirize anyone or anything and still sell millions of records and arenas/stadiums and intellectually destroy the individual arguments and claims as well as their integrity of PMRC at their hearings in mid-80's. He's very articulate, very convincing and you'd better have a fact-based, logical set of arguments if you try and debate him, because if you had any real or apparent flaws, he wouldve found it.
He might've lived longer if he hadn't smoked so long and didnt come to the realization that tobacco companies REALLY DID since late 1940's, know about how harmful their products were and actively tried to hide and mislead the public for next 50 years. I would highly recommend seeing the Russell Crowe movie The Insider, to better understand the dramatized series of events, circumstances that lead to a whistleblower annihilating Big Tobacco's long-held deadly corporate secrets and how essentially, CBS' 60 Minutes and Mike Wallace blew it all open.

In the United States, "Unitarian" refers to Unitarian Universalism because the two faiths officially merged in 1961. We call ourselves Unitarian Universalists or "UU." I think we should adopt a name that's simpler and less cult-like, because we are the polar opposite of a cult (i.e., rather than telling people what to believe, we encourage people to use their hearts and minds to discern what's true). And yes, we like to joke that coffee is our one "sacrament." 😉

We're a liberal religion focused on dignity, democracy and environmentalism. Matt Groening, author of the Simpsons, is a Unitarian. As a stereotype, we’re usually considered very mild and inoffensive, which is what the first bit with grandpa Simpson is playing on.
The second joke, ‘you just winged him’, is referring to the stereotype of Unitarians ‘barely being religious’. Really, it’s just that we don’t focus on what a lot of religions focus on, like afterlives and gods. We’re about how to live your life in the here and now.
We also tend to study other religions, open to learning from any tradition, potentially. That’s the third joke. Since wisdom can come from anywhere, we discourage treating our faith as ‘the one true faith’. Too all-or-nothing.
The fourth joke also refers to the fact that we don’t focus on cosmological issues. Some of us believe in a god and some don’t. It’s not part of our focus. Likewise with afterlives or anything supernatural. To some, that makes us empty, which is what Rev Lovejoy is trying to say with the empty bowl.
The last joke is basically a callback to the mild/inoffensive stereotype. Arguably it could be intending to poke fun at the various potentially offensive things the Catholic church has done.
      Hope this helps.

A large number of UUs (not including myself) grew up in more traditional religions but lost faith or became disillusioned with them in adulthood, the Unitarian church fulfilling the social function, routine, rituals, philosophy, and so on that they had in their previous church experience but without the religious dogma. The routines, traditions, rituals, community, structure, organization, and so on are all very traditional church-like, just lacking the religious dogma aspects. As far as its socio-political activism, Puritans were actively speaking out and criticizing the slave trade and promoting gender and racial equality (to a certain extent for the time period) as far back as the late 17th century. Puritans began forbidding slave owners from attending their meetings in the 1750's and they were advocates of issues, causes like temperance, sufferage, anti-slavery, and tolerating unpopular political beliefs decades before they became mainstream without altering or massively changing or "reforming" their core tenets of the faith.

@Pop Dumpster It's a pretty common trend for religions or movements to hate the heretic more than the heathen. Because while the heathen may reject your beliefs, the heretic holds to a corrupted view of your beliefs. For example, in Al-Andalus (Islamic Spain), there was a period of essentially Islamic Inquisition, where people were punished and even killed for violating the perceived requirements of Islam....but only if you were Muslim. Christians and Jews didn't have it easy, but were generally not treated as harshly. The same thing is also why so many leftist political movements turn into sometimes-literal circular firing squads, as they turn on each other for not being the right KIND of Leftist.

Going to Heaven (and therefor to going to hell) is actually a free gift from God. "He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him." John 3:36. Jesus of Nazareth, The Son of God, died for the remission of sin, including yours, was buried and rose from the dead on the third day. Whoever believes on him to save them from hell has everlasting life in heaven. Jesus himself said in John 6:47 "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life."

The word "Trinity" isn't found once in the bible. Nor are any of it's definitions "3 Gods in the 1 God" or "1 God in 3 Persons".
Nor are the terms "God the Son" or "God the Holy Spirit" to be found in the Bible, not once.
The term "God the Father" is found all through out the New Testament.

How do you get to hell?
Very simple: claim that you're innocent.
How do you get to heaven?
Very simple: Admit that you're not Innocent, you're guilty and ask for mercy.
How to know if you're guilty or not?
Simply: Compare your life to the Ten Commandments God gave you in the Bible.
Everyone agrees that if people followed the ten commandments there would be no need for governments or police.
    Do not lie.
    Do not steal.
    Do not commit adultery.
Do not insult God by using his name as a cuss word.
There are six more but let's just leave it at that.
How many lies have you told in your life?
Have you ever taken anything that didn't belong to you?
Jesus said, if you look at a women lustfully you've already committed adultery in your heart with that woman.
How many times a day do you do that?
Do you use God's name as a cuss word?
Would you do that with your own mother's name?
If you answer these questions honestly you know that you're guilty.
God can justly punish you and send you to hell.
    Ask him for mercy.
    His name is Jesus.
It's as simple as this, The Ten Commandments are called the moral law. You and I broke God's laws. Jesus paid the fine.
    The fine is death.
    Ezekiel 18:20 -
"The soul who sins shall die.
That's why Jesus had to die on the cross for our sins. This is why God is able to give us Mercy.
    Option A.
You die for your own sins.
    Option B.
Ask for mercy and accept that Jesus died on the cross for you.❤
