Hello Maangchi! I’m married to Korean. Unfortunately my mom in law passed away before she able to teach me Korean cooking, I have 3 sis in law ( 3 Hyungnim) but they’re living in different states.. Maangchi, I made this recipe with fillets of pollock instead of cod (what I had in the fridge) and it was soooo delicious! It really reminded me of growing up next to the ocean and eating with friends, as well as wonderful times with Korean friends having and sharing something tasty and laughing all night. The fruit and produce are always fresh. In the meat department, over the pork and beef display they have 2 or 3 screens with your videos playing non stop. 😉

I love the soft texture of steamed fish (and sitting on it's bed of onions, this is practically steamed!). I love the sweet mild flavor of cod. I love spice and onion. I can't stand fish bones. I am pretty sure this recipe is made just for me!

fish is prepared in a similar fashion in Caribbean cuisine. first it is pan fried, then finished off in a sauce with lots of sauteed sweet peppers, onions, and fresh scotch bonnet peppers to taste. it is usually served up with rice, and the sauce is amazing mixed with the rice. and, yes... the bones definitely add incredible flavor to the dish. it saddens me a bit when people are so removed from the source of their food that they freak out at bones in fish.
I am Indian and speak Bengali. We are from a riverine part of the country and our non-vegetarian meals are fish based.We cook with the fish bones and in case of smaller fish it's cooked with the head attached to it. It gives the sauce a distinct flavour.
From a Canadian-Trini, I couldn't agree more! It was honestly a wonderful thing to grow up next to the ocean; ocean and island people tend to respect their environment more, I think.

I wish I would've learned my mom's recipes but she's no longer with us but watching this and learning more helps so much and every time I have korean food I always think about my mom. she used to make this spicy fish stew that had fish with soft bones that you could eat and I never learned how to make it or learn what it was called

I used snapper fish from Costco instead of cod .. Super yummy. Didn't use seaweeds. Quick and easy. Whole family loved it. Thank you so much for sharing.❤️

I also learned what to use to make purple rice! I just don't know what beans I'm supposed to use. I used to not like it when I was little living in Seoul, we'd go to my mom's friends house and she'd feed us purple rice with beans haha but now I love it!

Thank you so much for this recipe. I live in NYC. Filleted cod is much easier to find than whole fish so as much as I agree that bone-in fish is better, this recipe is more practical.
This is wonderful. And so easy. Before adding the cod, I stirred a tablespoon of rice syrup into the liquid, and I sprinkled with sesame seeds. I’m going to have to keep cod in the freezer from now on.

you are so amazing! I definitely want to try this and I know how much healthier korean food is. I wish I would've learned my mom's recipes but she's no longer with us but watching this and learning more helps so much and every time I have korean food I always think about my mom. she used to make this spicy fish stew that had fish with soft bones that you could eat and I never learned how to make it or learn what it was called

I used snapper fish from Costco instead of cod .. Super yummy. Didn't use seaweeds. Quick and easy. Whole family loved it. Thank you so much for sharing.❤️

I also learned what to use to make purple rice! I just don't know what beans I'm supposed to use. I used to not like it when I was little living in Seoul, we'd go to my mom's friends house and she'd feed us purple rice with beans haha but now I love it!

Thank you so much for this recipe. I live in NYC. Filleted cod is much easier to find than whole fish so as much as I agree that bone-in fish is better, this recipe is more practical.

This is wonderful. And so easy. Before adding the cod, I stirred a tablespoon of rice syrup into the liquid, and I sprinkled with sesame seeds. I’m going to have to keep cod in the freezer from now on.

I love this dish. Very easy to make, and very quick too.
I used Tilapia instead of Cod. It worked out fine.
Serve it over rice with some Kimchi on the side. Delicious!

I don't use potato starch I prefer corn 🌽🌽 starch so easy And nice smell 😜😜😜
