  • We had the opportunity to put the Garmin 890 RV to the test this last summer and felt we needed to do a recap of the experience and determine if it is worth it. We started out with some unsettling issues that had us wondering if we made a $400 mistake but after completing installing all of the updates it worked amazingly well and proved to be very reliable.
Along the way we also discovered new ways to put the device to use. So this episode will cover those ways of getting the most out of your Garmin 890RV GPS system.
DON’t FORGET to check out our first video on the Garmin RV 890:

Another reviewer said their 890 put them on the George Washington Bridge and the inner look of DC that were very stressful routes. Have you had that experience? Is there a setting that would help to avoid those situations?

I did have some problems when we first started using it but those problems went away when I did an update. The updates can be found in the settings menu of the device. With that being said I try to always check the route before we head out on a travel day when we’re towing. (Not so much if we’re just on an excursion without the rig.). After all, though I embrace technology, I don’t always trust it explicitly.

I enjoyed your videos about the Garmin RV 890. I have a question about where you mounted it in your Ram truck since I have a 2021 Ram 3500 and the dash looks the same. What are you using to hold the magnetic mount in the recessed area on the dash? It looks like a perfect place to mount it and not interfere with your view of the road and traffic. Is there something I should buy to hold it steady in that location?

The rubber tray that is on the dash comes out and then I just screwed in the base of the magnetic mount in that recessed area. The good thing is if I ever decide to take it out the rubber tray will just pop back in, hiding the holes from the screws.

@@ourroadtocamelot Thanks. I was reluctant to do that since I don't know where wires were under that recessed area. I assume you didn't hit any with the screws. Did you use the screws that came with the unit or get shorter ones? I also though about using some double sided 3M tape to fasten the base to the bottom of the mount. Now.... I hope I don't forget where I store the rubber tray!!!!!!

Sorry to bother you with more questions about mounting the RV890. I have a 2021 Ram 3500 and have found that the recessed area on the dash is too small for either the suction mount or the additional screw in mount to fit. What year Ram do you have and how did you get the base to fit properly in that area?
